- Learn to laminate like a pro and save yourself some cash. Laminate is a super versatile material and knowing how to use it is a great skill to have. There are three basic steps to laminating a counter top: Measuring and cutting the laminate, attaching or adhering the laminate and trimming the laminate to fit. Some tools & materials required for the project include: Safety gloves and goggles, Laminate, Tape measure, Cutting saw, Contact Cement Paint brush, J-Roller, Trim Router, Short Neck Roller, ½ inch wood dowels and Xylene.
Start by measuring how much laminate you will need. When you are ready to cut, put the laminate face down on a piece of foam to cut. The foam gives you a strudy flat surface. To attach use contact cement and let it cure accordingly. Carefully attach the laminate. Using a J-roller, firmly press and attach the laminate so it forms a strong bond.
Then use a trim router to trim. For large pieces, use a short nap roller to roll on the contact cement to the laminate and the base. Use your roller, to get that perfect bond. Finally, sand off the edges to remove the excess glue with Xylene. For more great how to videos and home improvement tips, subscribe to Lowe's UA-cam: www.youtube.com... Wow! What a great trick using the dowels for positioning the top. Awesome video Lowes.
That worked way better than spray adhesive . Thank you for the tips
Great vid, simply and just what I needed. The dowels are a great idea!
OMG that is the most beautiful thing love the colors and pattern
Please wear a mask any time you cut laminate, sand or use a router! Otherwise, great, easy to follow video.
The one crucial thing you didnt mention, is cleanliness.
The tiniest spec of laminate or wood or whatever gets on the laminate or the counter after its glued and you dont notice it...
You will have a bump in the counter top that will be an absolute pain to get rid of (and sometimes you cant get rid of it at all)
Make sure the laminate AND the counter are completely clean before you add contact, and then again after its dried right before you put the laminate on. That includes the dowels
Speaking of dowels... they are a nice idea, until you realize they roll lol
better yet would be scrap rips of wood around 1/4", that way the laminate doesnt move around
What if the surface is painted or vanished? Should I sand the surface bare or just so it's clean? I'm putting laminate on the sides of an arcade cabinet that is painted 3/4 plywood.
Yes DEFINITELY!
Working in a cabinet shop, we would get a lot of melamine and laminated cabinets. Meaning the insides were kept with the melamine finish but the outside of the cabinets and doors were laminated. For the laminate to be properly applied, we had to run one side of the laminate through a wide belt drum sander to strip the finish.
I take it you probably dont have a drum sander so a belt or orbital will work just fine with 60 or 80 grit. Just be sure to sand evenly and not focus on any one spot too much. If you leave dips in the wood from too much attention, it will show or leave a spot where the laminate doesnt stick or both.
To be honest, I have never had to laminate over paint. But I would say to definitely do so. Going over stain should be fine without sanding, but if it was lacquered or polyed it definitely needs to be stripped first.
Can you use any saw?
Is a skill saw smoother cuts?
Is a jigsaw equavelant?
what abt the rounded capping at the joint edge between two pieces of laminate/plywood? it not jointed
How do you protect the laminate edges from delaminating or cracking?
Where in europe can you get laminate? Only crappy foils are available in shops.
that was so laminating
who cares your a woman. great job. i'm a man and worked with woman that can do just the same work as a man. great job girl.
michael pearson
I care.
What is the name of this laminate? Every google search I do shows me laminate flooring, even when I search for cabinet laminate...??
nice work
I remember my dad laminating our kitchen worktop back in the late 60's ........then they introduced ready made worktops with roundovers included. they are cheaper and easier to use.....why laminate yourself? Oh and the joints will always blow if moisture gets in it.
but hey... knock yourself out.....oh and use a fine toothed saw to cut it.
Why laminate yourself??? Because there are waaaay more patterns and colors available than the stock ready-made worktops.
michael hartley i
Amazing. Thank you, this was very helpful.
I wonder if contact cement is sold by some other name as well. Anyone? Please tell.
Why be different. You’re already needing to change things . 🫠
I've got a shelf that has already been laminated, but it's chipping and peeling off. How do I remove the damaged laminate to put a new laminate surface back on?
The glue is gonna make that pretty tricky to remove. If you don't want to replace the whole shelf, try filling any major gashes with wood filler, sand the surface extensively, then just install a new sheet of laminate over the old. Good luck!
idjit lowes. Use acetone under and each and get a blade under the edge while applying, it will peel right off, just let it dry before you restick anything
brilliant!
One can guy laminate boards in the US ready to use to, but its just less expensive to do it yourself.
Very nice ideas and simple to use...but please provide me the name of the machine for removing the excess laminate...thankss
Ghanshyam Ramdany they used a trim router in the video.
Lowe's Home Improvement Any Specific Tool company suggession
SabriSasthaRamanathan VenkataVelayutham They used a Bosch in video.
does the laminate make the countertop water resistant? Also does it come in rolls or is by sheets?
Yes it does but if the water infiltrates between joints. You can found laminates, normally with 47 inches x 100 inches sheets, generally the seller rolls them when sold.
I want to laminate my doors ... can I use this technic on them as well?
Sure if you take them off ... or you dont mind a lot of pain doing it standing up, but either way go with a contact adhesive spray, not what they are show casing here.
Because in the USA we love watching a woman do it :D
She have beautiful voice.
i have wood countertop, that was painted. how do i prepare it to be laminated.
+Constance Davis without knowing what type of paint - or how many coats - we'd suggest sanding the surface to get best adhesion. Once you've got a clean surface the rest of the steps would be the same. Thanks for watching our video.
muy buena !
I buy laminate boards ready for use in the Czech Republic (Europe). Why not in the U.S.?
This is kinda funny for a person like myself who does it for a living.
actually it is funny...
is it really that simple?
like hell it is
what tool is that to shape the extra edges of the Lamination shown at 1:16 second of this vedio
SabriSasthaRamanathan VenkataVelayutham We used a corded router. Thanks for watching!
Lowe's Home Improvement please what brand did you use or will you reccomend for cutting the laminate
flush cut router bit is probably what they wanted to know
Can the concrete get laminate?
Not sure what you mean. Are you asking if you can install laminate on top of an existing concrete countertop?
Ok my question is if a concrete counter top can get laminate?
Never ever use sand paper on laminate! Use a file!
Or do one better, and by a finish router bit with a 1/16th bevel.
yes, even a common 1/8th inch round over adjusted to just hit the tip saves so much time filing, just have to go over it to make sure you have no router chatter marks. But good lord, did I cringe to see her running sandpaper over the laminate.
Edging should be tapped on with wooden block then roller used. Trimmer for laminating in wood machining plsce is here. www.screwfix.com/p/makita-rt0700cx4-2-710w-router-trimmer-240v/10140?tc=EA1&ds_kid=92700022885041071&ds_rl=1241687&ds_rl=1245250&ds_rl=1244066&ds_rl=1249796&ds_rl=1245250&ds_rl=1249481&gclid=Cj0KCQiAjZLhBRCAARIsAFHWpbEh9wcXdtDqwSB0qAnF_s81zfmurn_qYfR2VxXhbJ99Q9UHyOvXpwAaApUXEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
sandpaper is great for edges.
a flush cut should be used first, then a beveled edge, then a quick and light sand with a 220 g sanding block
Bryan Garcia wrong , you can use 220 grit block
what type of wood u use
This is Lowe's channel, not a person.
ok i guess i will go to home depot now jajajajaja
how the hell do you cut laminate
ha ha....you are so funny :-D I am also a woman :-P
Did anyone else cringe when she used sandpaper.
I cringed at HOW she used a sanding block.
2 light very quick passes with 220 does wonders after you use a beveled edge. Ensures you remove and sharpness thats left after routing it.
Here I am a 30 year old woman afraid to drill a hole in my desk.....sigh
So many things wrong with this video:
she is sweet x
