I spent 6 months in a group home in 1996. My only possession was this CD and a clunky Discman. I took great comfort in this song. Thank you Pearl Jam for helping to save me.
8/27/2023 sitting alone on a beach on the gulf coast of Florida. Realizing more than half my life is behind me now, mother has been gone since 1992 and father, a Vietnam vet and strongest man I've ever known is suffering from beginning dementia. I'm at that stage in life, that age, where some cousins, long time friends and high school alumni, are starting to develop serious health conditions, some getting sick with terminal illnesses and some having already passed the last few years. Where did the time go? What happened to that feeling of youthful invincibility? It seems just a eye blink ago friends were plenty and everyone had time to hang out. Now, lucky to see even my closest ones every few months. I can't even put my finger on having any past realization that my 20's, 30's and now 40's have ended. I wasn't asleep but the further back I go it all seems like a dream. Pearl Jam seems like a few years ago not over 25. This song comes on my play list right at that time when I'm tearing up and the flow of them come hard. By God I haven't cried like that in a long, long time. Then by the end of the song I feel absolution in a small way, a decompression happened. A couple of laughing gulls are going back and forth in front of me, the sun is on its way to setting and the waves are gently rolling in. I realize that's just the way the life is. No use fighting or trying to make sense of it. Nostalgia is beautiful and I do love it, but it can wreck havoc on your heart if you let it. "It makes much more sense to live in the present tense", because that's all you can control.
Life is for living. Seasons come and go. Friends, family, loved ones, experiences, joy, pain life is made up of moments live them and be glad you got the chance.
“Most people struggle to be present. People go and sit in ashrams for 20 years in India, trying to be present. Do yoga, meditate, trying to get here, now. Most people live in fear because we project the past into the future. Michael Jordan is a mystic. He was never anywhere else. His gift was not that he jumps high, runs fast, shoots a basketball. His gift was that he was completely present. And that was the separator. The big downfall of a lot of other players who are otherwise gifted is thinking about failure. Michael didn’t allow what he couldn’t control to get inside his head. He would say, ‘Why would I think about missing a shot that I haven’t taken yet?’”
Michael Jordan is no mystic. Nor did he have ultimate knowledge of the natural state. Just stop it please. He was an extraordinary basketball player who is now a dollar billionaire with his own shoe brand. Sure he was present when he played basketball but that should not be mistaken for anything else.
Lyrics Do you see the way that tree bends? Does it inspire? Leaning out to catch the sun's rays...a lesson to be applied... Are you gettin' something out of this all encompassing trip? You can spend your time alone redigesting past regrets oh... Or you can come to terms and realize You're the only one who can forgive yourself oh yeah... Makes much more sense to live in the present tense... Have you ideas on how this life ends? Checked your hands and studied the lines? You're the only one who cannot forgive yourself, oh... A-makes much more sense to live in the present tense...
Absolutely agree, quite poetic when Jordan was walking away from the pain he has seen. As a matter of fact, he bore the burden of all of them and more.
Amazing song, hard to say who came first since the song was 96 lol. But I love when a person can feel music in anyway. I've always loved pearl jam and this song and now its given me another interpretation due to another art (show) using it in their backdrop. Glad you wanted to hear it again.

Great song. Makes a person look deep inside themselves about moments in their life that weren't always the greatest & learn to leave that in the past. Live for the now. Life's to short to let the bad shit drag you down & keep you down.
This is their best album. This is where it all came together for me. It's diverse, creative, heartfelt, beautiful. Every song has so many great things to offer. This one here is just breathtaking. Simple, and yet so profound. I really love this song and this album. It offers me so much every time I listen to it. It's the album of a great band stretching out, not afraid to experiment and try a different way of writing songs. And yet it all hangs together so well.

"Makes much more sense, to live, in the present tense". So simple, so true and yet so difficult to do. As humans we are blessed with intelligence, but that brings (in most cases) inherent regret, shame and embarrassment at our past endeavours and failures. I am now 50, and bought this album on the day it was released. The lyrics of this song have been with me ever since, but I am still "working on it".

How do you repay a band that has made your life so much lighter and easy to live? They have cheered me on and helped me along my path. Life was easier because of them
I listened to this song minutes before I jumped out of an ✈ and parachuted conquering so many of my anxieties about life. Live for today and stop thinking about the past and the future
My life since I’ve become older has been about living in my past. Too many things I cannot talk about. But I do need to live in the present tense and learn to forgive myself. Something I’ve never fully done...
Stumbled onto this gem at around the time my job started laying off. I was sitting and reminiscening on the last few of the eight years there and was overcome by a bit of anxiety and on the radio was this masterpiece. Heartfelt moment. FR FR.
At the end of my first contract in teaching, we had a final dinner. There was a fire in the centre of the restaraunt and we spent an hour just standing around, enjoying each other's company. A mix of old and young, new and experienced, just savouring the moment. There wasn't a finality to it all or a goodbye. We'll meet again. Don't know where, don't know when, but we'll meet again.
I love this song and I just want to say thank you to Pearl Jam for helping me. This song means a lot to me since the first time I heard it, because whenever my anxiety takes over me and the fears and mistakes of the past suffocate me, I listen to this song and remember that I have to stop thinking so much about the past and the future, and think more about "today". There is no greater form of torture than pouring over every past action and scolding yourself in the process - if you would do things differently today, that's good. It's a start. All you can do is take each day and try your best. Everybody else in the world is in the same boat. Just try your best today.
Re-watched The Last Dance over the weekend. Always catch something you miss during the re-watch, and I missed this song. Now I can't stop listening to it!!
This popped up around midnight I think...I chose to wait to listen when most of my brain is operational...what does that even mean anymore? Love this...we are all so unique, and yet, hold so many truths collectively. I can only face so much of my own truth at a time.....so, I love how this man can be in tune with such profound clarity. I'm still trying to overcome my own BS! Am I so easily impressed, no...this music is helping to remind me of all that is.....
Not only have I watched the end of the The Last Dance repeatedly for the past month, I also play this nonstop when I get in my truck. Forgot how much this spoke to me as a kid
So stoked to hear this at the end of The Last Dance

Great words to live by, I really wish I could follow them more often.
A perfect song: music, lyrics, voice, passion and inspiration. World Best rock band.
This song can heal you
The Last Dance ❤️
Dennis Rodman's nose is on the album cover😀
There is no greater form of torture than pouring over every past action and scolding yourself in the process - if you would do things differently today, that's good. It's a start. All you can do is take each day and try your best. Everybody else in the world is in the same boat.
Just try your best today.
Thanks for your comment. Helpful
We love you Michael
This song is an absolute masterpiece!
That guitar riff with a mixture of reverb and chorus is powerful. Masterpiece of a song
Perfect timing in The Last Dance
Pearl Jam foo fighters nirvana , legends of the 90's . The atmosphere of this song is so beautiful . Love lyrics too
Re-watched The Last Dance over the weekend. Always catch something you miss during the re-watch, and I missed this song. Now I can't stop listening to it!!
This song is my mantra in life.
Perfect use in the last dance! One of the best songs of all time...
Wow, blown away at how amazing this sounds.
Beautiful music that end Michael Jordan documentary "last dance".... 😍😍😍
Thanks again guys.
This makes me feel young and old at the same time. Seems that I can only take small doses of the past now.
Just perfection in it's easy simplicity while expressing pure rock and roll power.
My heart exploded at the end of the Last Dance! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 #GOATGOAT #MICHAELJORDAN #IAMPEARLJAM
Not only have I watched the end of the The Last Dance repeatedly for the past month, I also play this nonstop when I get in my truck. Forgot how much this spoke to me as a kid
