She sings like that because she's playing Cathy, as a ghost, reaching through the window to Heathcliffe asleep in his room. She's also a dancer and choreographs all her songs to enhance them, it's a full art performance.
This was an iconic moment in the history of Uk Pop Music back in Februrary 1978. When this came out on Top of the Pops, I think everybody just went "Wow what was that?". An absolute classic track performed by one of the most talented artists ever to come out of the UK Pop/Rock Scene. Kate Bush brilliant singer, song writer, pianist and dancer...Love it.
Kate plays a Ghost in this video, that explains the way she is dancing, this is a Genius at work. I think you reviewed her song Cloudbusting, which is also based on a book, Tori is a big fan of hers.
Many years ago, I was awakened on a Saturday morning by my radio alarm, playing Cloudbusting. It was the best awakening from sleep I have ever had in my 56 years. I still remember it vividly.
Words struggle to pay tribute to this. She wrote it when she was 18. It's based on the book and film; she is playing a ghost. It's heavenly in one sense but in another sense quite dark because it's a ghostly and forlorn apparition at .... the window. Anyway, song, performance, dance and lyrics it's all amazing to watch. It's a performance like few others.
Derek, listen till the very end where she ends up on a very high note. Everything about Kate Bush is superior. Her voice, her persona, her musicianship, writing, composing, producing most of it all by herself too, there is no one else like her!
she knocked Take a Chance On Me out of the UK #1 slot! honestly though if anyone is worthy of taking the number one slot chart from ABBA, it’s Kate Bush
Not stictly true although there was a Catherine and a Cathy in the story they were different people. It was Catherine who was in love with Heathcliff rather than Cathy (Cathy being Catherine's daughter).
This was her first single. She was only 19 at the time. It never charted in the USA,its follow up “The Man With The Child In His Eyes”(react to that one)got to #85 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1979. Pat Benatar covered this in 1980.
she is the greatest music genius; her musical creation, her voice, her performance, absolutely magical and unique, I love Kate Bush from Chile 🇨🇱 I love you KB ever
My sister and myself thought she was a witch when we seen this- we were 6 and 7 at the time though. I love early Kate bush especially[ Wow] and [The man with the child in his eyes].
This original was so unusual and so good. But she decided to record again this song many years later. For me, the second version is more dramatic... You can feel the passing-by of life (with happiness and sadness) in her voice. I think because of this prime of life, she was able to perform an extra range of vocals in order to show the nuances and the complexity of the story she delivered. The one of Kathy and Heathcliff... The characters of Wuthering Heights
This takes me back to my high school days. Kate is one of a kind . This song is so hauntingly beautiful it sometimes will give me chills. Thanks for this one.
Great! 😍 I adore this Kate Bush song, I used to dance around listening to it when I was a bit younger... OK, I confess, I still dance to it sometimes (plus kinda sing) 😉 And the story, so deep, chilling, passionate, sad. Oh my god... The masterpiece!
I bloody love Kate Bush. So influential and always doing her own thing, never chasing trends to stay relevant. She's awesome. Please do The Sensual World, Sat In Your Lap, Running Up That Hill, Cloudbusting, Experiment IV, Army Dreamers, Babooshka etc . :) Ok i did a quick search and you've already done Running Up That Hill and Cloudbusting. Awesome. :)
Kate was born on 1958. Tori was born on 1963. "Wuthering heights" was written in March 1977. Kate was 18 and a half years old. Amos was 14 by that time... Who's is copying who? Stop kidding me y'all
Kate Bush or, as I dare state, The One and Only Original Down To Earth Female Genius Musician, Dancer and Choreographer. I am delighted that a new generation will get to know her, come to love her like we did when she first fell out of heaven. (oh, that's so lame but you know what I mean....)
Kate is ans has always been a British icon, she has always been very theatrical in her dancing and expression she is brilliant and still has sale out concerts.
The Harmonies, The Melody, The Feelings...!?! I found this song strange and uncomfortably to hear when I was a young teenager(13-18..) although I was into music a lot !! For every time I heard it on Radio it got to me more and more.. Today..well, there are not many songs more beautiful than this one!! ...and Imagine writing and perform this song at the age of 19.. just pure Talent !! :) :)
Kate Bush is playing the ghost of Cathy Earnshaw - back from another ethereal plane, to collect the soul of Heathcliffe, her long time love from childhood. Kate Bush was taught mime by 'Linsey Kemp', who also taught mime to David Bowie.
Really, thank you so much for that reaction, Dereck. I really love that song so much. It's part of my favorite songs of all time. And Kate Bush is also a great singer with a so beautiful voice. So, thank you for that beautiful song, Dereck.
She re recorded the song years later (it was included in her 'The Whole Story' album) with added vocals mostly featured during the instrumental outro of the songs but this version is better in my opinion. Her record label EMI didn't want 'Wuthering Heights' to be the first single to precede the release of her upcoming album 'The kick Inside', they wanted 'James and the Cold Gun' which sounded more rock/upbeat. She fought hard to change their mind and won. The rest is history, the song shot to number one and her career immediately took off becoming one of the most talented artists this world has ever known. She is a genius!!
The Red Dress version is celebrated annually by women raising funds for Breast Cancer research. Here is a link: ua-cam.com/video/Je75AtbrPh8/v-deo.html
This was made when she was 19, it was her first hit in the UK. She composed the song based on her school studies of the novel and she also created the choreography for this, the dance style became more commonplace in the early 80s so for the late 70s it was still quite unknown and unique.
Kate Bush is like a female David Bowie, artistic to the max, versatile, consistent and always pushing the boundaries, a phenomenal songwriter and performer. And like Bowie was into almost every kind of art she also dances and acts during her song performances to make the audience experience the song not just with their ears. Did I mention that she's a genius ? Nominated for the rock and roll hall of fame twice already, a shame that she's still not in.
Such a coincidence - I could not bear not owning the compact disc format of THE WHOLE STORY, Kate Bush's first ever compilation released in 1986 that I ordered a used copy from Amazon (Japan) today. It has a new version of Wuthering Heights though. Despite having the LP and the digital copy, I just need to own the compact disc to complete the collection - the greatest hits album was a primer to the body of work from Kate Bush for me.
Wonderful Kate, this is one of the best songs ever written and of course she wrote it because she’s a genius. This song explains the story of Wutherin heights ( a very famous book) in a nutshell. It’s a heartbreaking love story, Kate expresses it perfectly. I don’t know if you did “a woman’s work” already or not. So many more great songs to pick from.
This was her first single. The first number one in the U.K. self penned by a female vocalist...ever!!! She was 19 here and if I remember correctly this song was written when she was 16.
This was actually the first vision of Kate Bush to the UK public at large. One of those songs and videos that stopped people in their tracks. The lyrics and dance interpretation of the famous novel spot on.
Love the way you go deep into the songs, musically and meaning. Kate is an amazing artist, check out her 'This Woman's Work', it's a classic that's been covered by so many other artists. ❤️🔥
Wuthering Heights, 1978, singing as Cathy from the Oscar winning film "Wuthering Heights" 1939 staring Lawrence Olivier. Cathy is passed over and is waiting for her lover Heathciff on a mountain pass, their favourite place "wuthering heights". Written by Emily Bronte 1849.
So glad you gave this your Dereck Reacts Approval ! .. Because it's one of my all-time favourite songs by one of my all-time favourite artists .. She is like nobody else I know, and as you say, she covers a wide range of styles in her repertoire .. One super-talented lady, and ultra charismatic in both her music and her personality .. PLEASE do many more by Kate !!!
Fun fact about the genius that is Kate Bush. Kate was born exactly 140 years after Emily Brontë (30th July 1958 (Happy 63rd birthday Kate for this Friday) & Emily was born 30th July 1818)
How could Kate copy Tori Amoss ,when Kate was around first . Kate is individual, and original ,has her own style, more creative, and better .I've loved her since day one .
Dereck should react to Émilie Simon, she's often described by lazy journalists as "the french Kate Bush" while being so much more, as one of the only singer-songwriter and electronica sound designer of the current French scene. After a long hiatus (again, like Kate Bush) Émilie has been hinting at a new album on her official page.
One of the greatest talents ever to come out of the U.K. She's a genius.
kate bush est un chef d'oeuvre a elle seule...:)
Véritablement touchée par la Grâce, un génie musical.
Thanks England for giving us Kate 🙏
To ever come out of the universe!

Correct.

Yes I love this video, shows Kate at her best.
YES ! Maybe that's why he thinks the video is weird... if you don't get the reference lyrics/book, it's hard to understand !
Many years ago, I was awakened on a Saturday morning by my radio alarm, playing Cloudbusting. It was the best awakening from sleep I have ever had in my 56 years. I still remember it vividly.
After 30 years she did a comebacks all her concerts were sold out in minutes a truly great artist
I remember Kate bursting onto the music scene looking and sounding like nothing we'd seen before. I've been in love with her since. 💖
Me too ! it was certainly a game changer in 78 😊
Kate Bush is my favorite artist of all time. She is incredible! Absolutely recommend listening to her albums.
Kate, the emperess of music! You need 1 year to discover her world, albums that are gems!!!!

One of my favorite artists. No one comes even close to her. This song is one of my all time favorites. I really have an old soul.
The chorus of that song is like a dream... No other words 😍😍😍
She's mesmerizing .... I love her voice !
Derek, listen till the very end where she ends up on a very high note.
Everything about Kate Bush is superior. Her voice, her persona, her musicianship, writing, composing, producing most of it all by herself too, there is no one else like her!
This was her debut track. Absolutely blew me away!
*"Kate Bush - This woman's work" You have to react to this one !!!!!*
Indeed
she knocked Take a Chance On Me out of the UK #1 slot! honestly though if anyone is worthy of taking the number one slot chart from ABBA, it’s Kate Bush
The UK changed their mind and took a chance on Kate ;)
May 1978
That's strange I watched a video and it said every country she was number 1 but didn't include Sweden, I thought I bet that was ABBA
This song is recounting the love story of Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff and Cathy.
Not stictly true although there was a Catherine and a Cathy in the story they were different people. It was Catherine who was in love with Heathcliff rather than Cathy (Cathy being Catherine's daughter).

Love the song "Wow". That is amazing
"This Woman's work" a fantastic song.
I was 15 when this song came out, here in Italy it made a resounding success, how many memories of youth on these notes, I get goosebumps
OMG, I love Kate Bush, this song is so iconic and yes it is not an easy song to sing and cover. She is amazing.
One of the greatest reactions of this song and noting the music score especially the end guitar work.Good Job
"Kate Bush & David Gilmour - Running Up That Hill (live)" - It's something else
she is the greatest music genius; her musical creation, her voice, her performance, absolutely magical and unique, I love Kate Bush from Chile 🇨🇱 I love you KB ever
I REALLY ENJOYED EVERYTHING ABOUT IT!!
No one has a voice like Kate, she is and will always be beautiful. .
She is sublime.
Beautifull song of Kate Bush. Derek, the same music on the same time, Jerry Rafferty, Baker street, beautifull so !
Good video as always. XD
You can also try her duo with Peter Gabriel "Don't give up" ^^

Kate Bush never repeats herself. She does very different things. She's classically trained, which adds immensely to her quality.
This is still my favorite of Kate Bush... iconic

The video shows her as a ghost. She is Cathy who was in love with Heathcliff in the book and film of Wuthering Heights.
Kate Bush, she is a great singer, songwriter, producer ... she is an incredible artist.

An absolute music treasure!
The story of this song is fantastic, she‘s dancing as the ghost from the gothic novel Wuthering Heights who‘s trying to enter the house.
no one can sing this like Kate

I love the novel and this song is so great!! I think it captures perfectly the essence of the story. I also like Angra's cover of this one.
