Klein is al jaren bestuurslid van Jewish Voice for Peace en zeer kritisch op de staat Israël, waar ze overeenkomsten ziet met de Westerse koloniale geschiedenis: ‘Het is geen acceptabele goedmaker voor de holocaust om te zeggen: nu geven we de mantel van witheid door aan jullie. Nu mogen jullie de kolonisten zijn en kunnen jullie etnische zuiveringen uitvoeren.’
Als hoogleraar aan de universiteit van British Columbia zag ze de pro-Palestijnse studentenprotesten van dichtbij. De protesten stemmen haar hoopvol. ‘Ze willen een ander systeem. En een toekomst waarin iedereen gelijk is. Ik zie het als mijn taak om te zeggen: jullie zijn niet gek. Jullie houden het goed in de gaten en jullie hebben een hart. Dus hou vol.’

I love the optimistic view on how she sees young people demanding a more just society for all with renewed universal laws and values which my family and my children share. But unfortunately, going at the streets for it surrounding the Palestinian cause has lead to the rise of far right parties and them winning our national elections. Beside our idealistic youngsters on the streets we also need better leaders to show us what our options and choices are for the world and our future. And why these renewed universal laws and values should be the base for all. Time for a change in political structures as well. Career politicians out and our philosophers back in the center of the political arena.

It happen more than 15 years ago. It was a civil war with competing fractions. It was not driven by ideology, but greed. So there is really no resemblance.

Naomi Klein is iemand die niet zomaar uitspraken doet. Haar onderzoeken zijn zeer zorgvuldig en bewoordingen zijn altijd onderbouwd met feiten. Dit is een interview met een specialist die haar dagelijks werk heeft gemaakt van fact checking en kritische vragen stellen en beantwoorden.
Dit is geen documantaire of vraaggesprek met beschouwing van verschillende kanten, maar dat is duidelijk ook niet het doel geweest. Is dat erg? Nee, de kijker zou zelf verstandig genoeg moeten zijn om waarde te hechten aan de inhoud van deze video of deze waarde elders te zoeken.
Hoe sommige van die protesten zijn afgelopen is natuurlijk achterlijk. Ze begonnen vredelievend maar werden door intimidatie steeds gewelddadiger.
Naomi Klein wil de gebeurtenissen in een bredere context plaatsen, waarbij de achterliggende problemen worden geduid. Dit is juist waar het vaak aan ontbreekt, mensen zijn geneigd om meteen emotioneel te worden en niet te onderzoeken, doordenken of luisteren. In mijn optiek is dit interview dan ook zeer waardevol en stof tot nadenken voor de personen die hier voor openstaan.
Is toch vrij logish? Zionisme is een reactie op antisemitisme, antisemitisme voed de vraag naar een joodse staat.

I think the label ‘ethnostate’ comes from the status of Jews as an ethnoreligious group, and from a part of Israeli law, which states that “the right of national self-determination is unique to the Jewish people”, which is often interpreted as placing the Jewish population of Israel above the minorities in the region.

To compare them and to try to get conclusions from this bias show such a lack of knowledge of what was really the extermination of European Jews. The colonial massacres were based on economic reasons, on the idea that local people were inferiors. The Jewish genocide was based on the idea the Jews were forming a cosmopolite group, superior, coIsnspiring against the people and the nations and that they had to be eradicated.. Even until the very end of the war, they germans were considering that the jews were responsible of the war, that they were manipulating US government. Israël is rather a consequence of the Evian conference where asylum was denied to Jews trying to escape Germany. This country was populated essentially by apatrides that were gathered in camps after the war was over and who where not accepted by European nations. I will force me to listen to the end of this stupidity but from the very beginning it is wrong and just follows the actual trend of applying the decolonisation filter to all situations, forgetting also that the support to all liberation movement have led ton totalitarian regimes persecuting their people.
