    Okay, so I've been practicing this one for about a month and I'm very happy with it! This is, I think, the most difficult single piece I've ever learned all the way through. It isn't completely flashy (though of course there's some crazy bits), but it's an incredibly grooving and expressive piece. Guthrie Govan is one of my absolute biggest inspirations and there's so much to pull from in his playing, and learning this piece has made me a much better guitarist.
    I'm not expecting to get many views on this one, but it was a big passion project to get this video done eventually. I'd like to do his Larry Carlton one eventually, and Wonderful Slippery Thing if I can ever get those silly arpeggios down.
    Little Music Theory Tidbits:
    This solo is in the key of E Major/Mixolydian. Guthrie highlights both the major and minor 7 intervals at different times, depending on the chordal context, which helps keep the solo from feeling too boxed in. However, this is also a great solo to show how wonderful and expressive the pentatonic scale can be!
    A lot of the flavor also comes from his chromatic passages. In a major key, chromaticism is a lot less "dangerous", I feel, as you can really make any interval sound decent, even the minor 2nd; in a minor key, that major 3rd interval really sticks out-to me at least-no matter how hard you try to incorporate it in a chromatic run, so I'm careful to leave it alone personally. Regardless, Guthrie really takes the adage that "you're always a half-step away from a right note" and really runs with it, in particular in the center of the song there's this wonderful chromatic bit that leads up to a long bend-great "tension and release" move, and also I think a bit of a breather for him mid-solo honestly heheh.
    The nicest thing about the chromaticisms though, is that it allows you to flurry notes out without being too repetitive, and without needing to cover so much space. You can hear just as many notes from some other famous shredders, but they're really flying up and down the neck and through their scales. Which is a great sound too, but the chromatics help tame your direction without requiring heavy sequencing a la Paul Gilbert or someone more in that vein.
    That was actually a lot, but eh, maybe someone will find it interesting! Ultimately I'd think the most important takeaways from this solo should be the immaculate feel Govan has, what a terrific guitarist!

    Nice to see someone use techniques well while also being able to put expression in their playing, amazing job. What gear do you use?

    • @AmberD
      @AmberD  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks so much! I try very hard to keep my playing expressive. My gear is very simple: Amplitube 5, Reaper DAW, Focusrite, Cort Starlite.
      Looking into getting a Jackson guitar right now though!
