- Does this Thunderbolt 4 mini dock from Anker work for the M1 Max MacBook Pro? I have been using this Thunderbolt 4 dock with the M1 Mac Mini and M1 MacBook Air for the last year and I wanted to follow up on whether this dock is a viable option, or whether you may need to consider another solution for the M1 Pro or M1 Max MacBook Pros, as well as the previous M1 line of devices.

Just wanted to answer some questions others may have had (including some frustration) about using this dock with the M1 line up. Again, it's stated by Anker that these aren't supposed to be fully compatible, so YMMV. Hope you're all doing well.
I have made the exact same experiences!
No matter which nvme and case.
Still, I keep this dock because it is very compact and very well made.

Annoying, I know, but it is a really compact dock. Just wanted folks to know, but again, I know Anker isn’t advertising they’re fully supporting the M1.

Fwiw, I have the same issue with the Acasis enclosure directly connected to my M1 Pro 14". It's not recognised once disconnected, until a system reboot.
Interesting on the direct connect. That’s a bit of a pain.
Same issue with disconnecting TB drive on CalDigit Element Hub, that is similar to Anker but has 3 more USB 3.0 ports.
I’ve heard similar concerns with the Element. I was interested in that one as well, last year.
I’m hopeful 🤞that we’ll find one that works. The TS4 from CalDigit looks promising, but I need to take it for a good spin around the block, and then some.
I am using OWC thunderbolt 3 dock with my M1Pro 16in, so far Have had no issues with it at all. I use it for a single cable setup, charge, drive and 49in Samsung display

I was looking to get this and here is what Anker said when I was emailing them about the PowerExpand 5 in 1 mini dock:
"We apologize for the wrong information given on our website. We have fixed it now and we appreciate your help in letting us know.
Yes, Macbook Pro (2021) M1 Pro and M1 Max chips do support Multi-Stream Transport. The reason for the incompatibility we mentioned is that during the compatibility test between the M1 Macbooks and the dock, we found that the probability of the splash screen problem is very high, and the measured compatibility is not good. From the perspective of customer experience, we do not recommend customers of M1 Macbooks buy this product. We are also continuing to develop products that are more compatible with M1 Macbooks to meet the needs of M1 customers."
Yeah, so I heard from a rep from Anker not that long ago telling me that they should be releasing these devices fairly soon.
I’m hoping to be able to put one of these to the test, but this is one of the reasons why I wanted to follow up with this video since it “sort of” works, but there’s obviously a couple of hang ups with it.
Do the external Nvme drives in the enclosures also disappear after ejecting them from the Regular M1? Or is this an issue with just the M1 Pro/Max? Thank you Kevin!
Yeah, so this is on M1 as well. I tested this early and followed up months later and it’s still unchanged. There’s no random disconnection, but once you disconnect it, you just have to restart the computer when you plug it back in.

Careful with thunderbolt 4 hubs from Anker. I have learned they have compatibility issues ie with new Apple products. I had to replace my HUB due to this issue as Anker will not deal with the problem. I think they may not support Apple for some strange reason.
Thanks for sharing, and yes, there’s definitely a hang up with that Apple Silicon (specifically) hardware that seems to present with problems.
I’m still using this hub today, but generally just for display, audio, and some accessories.
On their Amazon listing, it says "Doesn't support M1 macbooks" and I only saw this tiny fineprint until AFTER I already bought it. It's good to know that this isn't the case. Not sure why they put that little stipulation at the end when it isn't true. It scared the shit out of me.
Yeah, I still use it to this day. It’s pretty much “hardwired” to the M1 mini. Just that one issue I had with the Thunderbolt enclosure SSD when ejecting it and plugging it back in. I’ve never had any random disconnects from the drive or anything like that.
They have told me they’re working on some updated hardware though.
Will this dock support a 4K and the apple studio display?
Yes, I’d run the Apple display through the TB port and your other display through the DP port.
How is your camera connected to computer ,, Camlink 4K?,,, if so can you connect the Camlink to that dock. Camlinks will not work with T4 docks connected to M1 Max. They disconnect after several seconds. This is a known issue that Elgato acknowledged .
I have the 16" M1 Max , I went through 3 different T4 docks, till I found out it was Elgato issue, just wondering if it was same for your 14 inch?
Usually if I’m streaming then I connect direct to the computer, and I have another capture card that apparently isn’t for sale right now…
However this would be a great test. I have the CalDigit TS4 on loan right now and I may just test this out. Great suggestion.
But specifically, I haven’t tested the Cam link with a dock.

Yeah, I’ve been researching this..looks like Elgato isn’t supporting it. I’ll test the capture card I have just to see if it’s a brand issue…but I will say that the bandwidth required is more than what a display or external drive would need, so that’s definitely going to be a big issue.
I’ll see what I find though.
Trying to get a Cam Link on loan, but I will say that my other capture card works. I tested it on Twitch.
Had no issues with the caldigit element hub until now. 3 weeks of use.

@@KevinRossRN don’t have the MacBook with me now. But I think I just updated to the newest available. I have the base 16” m1pro and I use it mainly with sandisk extreme usb c drives
It’s a shame we can’t get a firmware update on these. I definitely looked for one.
When I first got this particular dock it worked pretty much without issue. However with various OS updates I noticed a hiccup here and there, and sometimes it would go away with an update, and then return on the next update 🤷♂️
Hi , new fan here! Im currently using macbook pro 13inch m1 chip 2020 monterey, can I use 2 Monitors? im using 27inch asus 144hz, ang planning to add 34inch MSI optix.. any advice please?
Welcome to the community. So, the M1 supports the 1 external display natively, but there are some workarounds that you could pursue, but not guaranteed. Are interested in piecing this together, or what about an ultra (ultra) wide display?

I heard that newest version of 970 evo plus run above 2800mb/s on M1.
I have that one and did test it. Read, yes. Write, not so much. It’s still a great SSD.
@@KevinRossRN Someone says old versions and US version might still have poor performance on M1. But I saw many test results with Chinese version and the write speed can approach 2656MB/s. I wonder how does newest US version perform compared to old US version? But I am gonna try sn750 and Sabrent Rocket and keep one in the end. What do you think of the spring event? I do heard rumors about Mac mini with M1pro and max. Do you think is there gonna be a M2 mini?
Yeah, I wish I had multiple versions to try. I also get a little concerned when a synthetic benchmark is run (mostly Black Magic) and then call it good. So it would be interesting to see some additional tests on various models.
I still think it’s a great SSD though. The 980 Pro is my favorite right now and I think it handles the thermals quite well.
As far as the Mini, I don’t think we’ll see the M2 in it this spring. I’m thinking that’ll be reserved for later this year, but that one is built more for efficiency rather than “power” so we could potentially see it sneak in there, but M1 Pro and Max could definitely work well in there.
I’m looking forward to the next mini.

I wasn’t expecting it either. I was in chorus in middle school and one day I just woke up with a voice about 3 octaves lower. A blessing and a curse to edit, although funny when people meet me and ask if I work in radio or do voiceovers 🎙 💀

I did order and fully paid a 16" MacbookPro M1 Max with mactrade which is a Germany based apple provider on October 22 in 2021 and still waiting.
