    Mike found your channel the other day, some great reviews, am getting a Mac Studio Ultra to replace an ageing 2010 Mac Pro & like a lot of people I’m discovering utilising all my existing internal drives from my old Mac to the new one isn’t going to cheap. Any idea for a cost effective and efficient way of mounting a myriad of drives types? I think it’ll end up with lots of little external enclosures, 1 NVMe for speed & the rest a mixture of SSD & mechanical storage can go into slower HDD docks. I’ve looked at OWC bays , neat but their expensive. Ideally something like a USB 3.1 that can take a few drives, it’s mostly library stuff (Audio related not video) . Appreciate any ideas. I’ve even thought about building something , you can get USB-C to sata for super cheap.

      Thanks for the feedback. You could try a NAS (amzn.to/3IMbEYC) and attach to it with either a 10GbE connection or USB 3.2. You can configure each drive independently or set it as a RAID is you have all the same size drives for safety. May not ideal but it may be a good long term solution for mass storage. I use several NAS units for audio and video storage and they work well. Other than that I do not have any real good alternatives. Thanks for watching and let me know if you find a solution.

    Careful with thunderbolt 4 hubs from Anker. I have learned they have compatibility issues ie with new Apple products. I had to replace my HUB due to this issue as Anker will not deal with the problem. I think they may not support Apple for some strange reason.

      Thanks for the feedback. Interesting issue you experienced. The 3 that I have have not had issues with my MAC products as that is mostly what I use hubs and docking stations on. Thanks for sharing your experience with it.

    Hi Mike. Good info on this dock and I just subscribed. Will this dock allow me to utilize 2 external monitors when a 14” MacBook Pro M1 Pro is in clamshell mode? I need the monitors to be extended, not mirror. Thoughts?

      On the pro it sure will. It works great on the pro but not the air.

    I bought the plugable one and returned it yesterday because it kept disconnecting which was messing with my external hard drives. It also charged my laptop which I don't really like since it's a third party device. I'd rather use apple's charger for that.
    I'm wondering if this will give me the same problems. I really need to hook up a few things that I am currently switching out one for the other.

      Have not tried the Plugable, but this one has been rock solid for me, and I will be buying a second one very soon. Good luck and let me know if you end up trying it.

    I do have a macbook pro that i need to plug sometimes to the external monitors, so this would work. However, its main use would be to stay connected to a PC without thunderbolt/usb 4. It does has a usb c 3.2x2 (20gb) port. Would it work with that PC? I am trying to avoid the purchase of a thunderbolt pci card for it so i can also use a thunderbolt 3 enclosure i have trough this dock.

      Interesting configuration and question. I have never tested a direct connection as you described it so I can not verify. My typical connection is to go through a network. Sorry I could not provided a better answer.

    Will the downstream Thunderbolt ports deliver up to 15w of power when the power brick is not plugged in? Can it draw power from the laptop instead?

    Hi Mike thanks for the video. One question will the docks power button turn the mac on if the lid is closed? Many thanks

    • @MikeFaucher
      @MikeFaucher  Рік тому +2

      Yes, it sure does. In my case I leave the dock on and just plug in when I am going to use it, put if you leave the laptop plugged in, you can control it with the dock. Turning off the power will replicate what happens when you close the lid and when hit the power button it will come back. Great question and thanks for the feedback.

    is this model support 4k 120hz when using for single monitor?

      I don’t believe it does. Documentation does not address it and I don’t have a 120hz monitor to test it with.
