Regarding your comments on the Razer dock, you mentioned that it does not do video out via HDMI.
You can do video out via HDMI or DisplayPort via a USB-C to HDMI/DisplayPort cable.
I'm using with three external displays and that makes it the best dock for M1 Max for me.

As for the Razer Chroma docking station, you can plug-in monitors using HDMI/DP to Type-C adapters (or cables for that matter), both work fine from what I checked at my office.
My jaw dropped when he said it couldn't handle external displays. It LITERALLY says it handles two 4k or one 8k in the Amazon screenshot he showed!

Thanks for the review! To be honest, I felt the gripe about the USB-C upstream on the front of the Anker was a little unfair. For people who have a large desk, having a short 1-1.5' cable out of the front that neat and cleanly plugs into the laptop if you sit it on the desk to your side is actually a brilliant design idea. May not be conventional, but it keeps cable runs to a minimum, unless you're intent on storing the MacBook elsewhere. Another important thing that I'm not certain was mentioned is that several of this will NOT allow extended displays on M1 Pro / Max.
I just had to return my Anker 777…it is plagued with problems…constant flickering with external monitor hdmi ports, and then the lack of silicon support…just a sad offering from a usually strong company

Caldigit Ts3 + here. Tried some generic brands from Amazon, but Caldigit provides firmware updates which hopefully means future support. It's Displayport output works well into 34 inch QHD, and USBC ports into a USBC Sandisk NVRam drive is about 3-4K. The clones didn't do well. I tried Toblerone (?) (the other Tobenone he showed) which looks like it's sold under several names, but not sure about support. Monitor out never worked
Make sense to plug the laptop to the front of the dock, because you'll put your laptop in front of you to use, behind the laptop then is the deck towards the back of the desk. The cable then goes from your laptop towards the back of the desk and that's where the dock is and the cables on the back connecting everything else.

I have a new 14 inch M1 Max 64 gig 2 TB SSD. This is exactly the kind review I’ve been looking for. My challenges I am using it for my desktop but I wanna plug-in CAT5 I wanna use the Internet hardwired along with having all the other ports you mentioned specifically one for my WebCam and just a few other USB eight ports in general. I’m looking forward to finishing the video. Thank you for all your work and money you spent on this.
Thanks for the work you've done. Could you also lets us know how each worked in clamshell mode on the laptop, as I've already found the Satechi Type-C Multi-port adapter 4K with Ethernet V2 DOESN"T wake the monitor up instantly with a key stroke or mouse use. I ended up returning it and for now have the Apple HDMI & USB one and it works flawlessly but I need more USB's and ethernet. Thus why I watched this video.

One thing confuses me though. When you say “this one has its own power brick so it can charge my laptop” for some devices does it mean you can enable or disable charging by connecting and disconnecting the power brick to those devices? Doesnt the power brick should always be plugged in to the device in order for it to be working? I am not referring to the first 3-4 simpler devices that do not come with a power brick. To sum it up, do we have the option to use the devices connectivity capabilities without charging our laptops all day?

Thanks for this. I'm also trying to decided what dock/hub. Also def worth looking at other TB docks from CalDigit and OWC. Your top pick only has one 10GB/s port. Current gen external SSDs already have transfer speeds of over 1000MB/s and many much faster. If you want to future proof, I'd recommend getting a dock/hub that has at least a few TB and/or 10GB/s USB ports...

Really great vid! I'm getting ready to purchase the thunderbolt 4 dock from Razer but I'm getting a little confused with the daisy-chaining in my head. I have a dual workstation (Mac & PC) and I'm trying to figure out how the pc will recognize my M&K receiver if it's plugged into the thunderbolt 4 dock. Would I need a usb 3.0 to 3.0 cable that connects to the back of the pc and the thunderbolt 4 dock?
Great video and exactly the type of content I was looking for. I've tried a number of Mac docks over the years and I've found that one of the biggest weaknesses is the Ethernet port (and overheating, but that's a separate issue). I prefer to hardwire my MacBook Pro M1 Max rather than use WiFi for speed and security reasons. Almost every dock I've used caps out at around 650 Mbps even though it's advertised as a 1Gbps connection. So, I now use a combination of performant docks (Kensington and Brydge) with a dedicated USB C to Ethernet dongle. The Ethernet dongle lets me realize close to rated speed for my fiber service (I get about 930 Mbps download speeds on a 1 Gbps connection). Rather than plugging in a single Thunderbolt cable (for the dock), I now have to plug in two (for the dock and Ethernet). This minor inconvenience is well worth it in terms of performance, however. @@Trevor-Bobyk For the docks I’m using, I believe they rely on Realtek drivers. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that there are any updated Realtek drivers for the Mac platform (using Apple Silicon). And there are no firmware updates issued beyond the purchase date for my docks. I will note that the last generation of Brydge docks (before the company was sold) seem to work fine with respect to Ethernet connectivity.
My DELL displays deliver 60watt of power over usb-c and that is more than enough to power my 16" m1max64GB/2TB. I guess it depends on the workflow. Anyway. Thanks for the extensive review! Next stop, I'd like to see the OWC Thunderbolt 4 dock and the Calldigit Element dock. Add in a Samsung T7 or another external SSD with GB/sec transfer speeds for your testing. Thanks!
It would be interesting to see what transfer speeds you got with the SOHO dock. Why did you not try TS3Plus?
While they both use the USB-C port, there is a significant difference between USB docks and Thunderbolt 3-4 docks. I think it would be more helpful to do a roundup on Thunderbolt docks only and perhaps doing another video on USB(c) docks/hubs. Mixing the two really isn't fair. However, I would love to see a video looking at the available USB(c) adapters - since that seems to be a bit more sketch with the M1/Pro/Max systems.
great video, quick question are you plugging these hubs with older apple brick providing 90 watts and also plugging in your 16 inch with the 130watt brick at same time?
I just got the Caldigit Element for the M1 Mac Mini, its fast and has the thunderbolt port on the side rather than the front.
The guy on F-Stoppers did the exact same thing spending $1500 on docks. He tested using 4K dual monitors and input latency.
I watched the whole video, good info. I'm soon to be new to mac with a MacBook pro M1 Max. What I'm trying to find out is, which docks will work for extended displays rather than mirror only?
if you have a caldigit dock with displayport (like the usb-c pro dock) you just need active displayport to hdmi adapters. caldigit makes them. i use them with mine and they work flawlessly. worth the small extra cost per adapter (caldigit sells them for like $18-$20). power delivery will always be under-powered for the 16" macbook (or any laptop requiring at least 90w), but this + the apple charging brick have worked just fine for over a year so far. thunderbolt/usb-c power has a cap at around 90w so it's going to be almost a requirement to have a 2nd cable for power with these devices going forward unless there is a major change in usb/tb spec.
also on your razer one...hdmi to usb-c is a common enough cable to get from a company like uni, so they will work.
Any advice for connecting one or two 27” Thunderbolt displays when using the Caldigit? Do I use a UBC 2 to 3 dongle, like I would in connecting to MB Pro 14 M1. Or any special cables needed? Thanks.
How were you able to push 2 displays on the caldigit usb-c hdmi dock? It definitely was not able to push signal to two displays on my M1 Pro. One of my displays was flickering on and off. Even caldigit support said it was an M1 Pro limitation.
Thanks for undertaking this expensive research cos it's a minefield out there. My own pinch point is trying to find a portable hub with decent speed ratings, so Gen 2 ports and card slots of the faster UHC-II variety is really tricky - you usually have to give up one or the other.
What I'm looking to do is connect my M1 to my Dell hdmi monitor and have my 27 apple tunderbolt monitor connected as well. I don't know if I need one of these connectors, I do have them on dongles but the displays are not working.

why is this listed (Anker Thunderbolt 4 Dock) when on the website it says it does not work on M1 chips. Anker told me they were still in the process of making/testing their dock to work with the M1 chip and have not come out with on that works yet.

two hints here:
- as far as i know the MacBook will not charger over 100w via usb-c.
- you might want to use a USB4/Thunderbolt 4 dock rather than Thunderbolt 3 as this gives you the option of more Thunderbolt connections.
If I buy a monitor with USB c and plug straight into my MacBook air M1 will it display good? And can I then extend the display to run 2 screens or will I still need a dock?
I want a hub that has multiple usb-c inputs and only takes up 1 usb-c port on my new M1 MacBook Pro. I only want to plug in 1 thing to connect all my studio gear. I have multiple usb-c or Thunderbolt 3/4 devices, like a Thunderbolt audio interface and external ssd’s. These devices perform best with a usb-c connection - and yet most hubs still have multiple usb type a or b connectors. Is there a technical reason you can’t multiply the usb-c ports?

Did you reformat your SanDisk SSD out of the box? I have your computer and my first SSD like your's began ejecting itself (sitting still). I've exchanged it with SanDisk but was reading about a different initial format for the hard drive .. more conducive to the Mac? Thoughts?

Apparently the Caldigit dock isn't available until August, 2022. It's mid June now. Which of those would be your backup pick?

Since I will be frequently carrying the laptop in and out of my office, plugging into the front of the Anker makes perfect sense to me.

Check out OWC Thunderbolt 4 dock - the only ones I found, that have real 40 Gbit USB-C Thunderbolt ports.
Great review. The o Ly thing left was if the docks could manage 2 displays. I know the anker CA not use both hdmi ports. I'm using the hdmi and the Tb4 port on the back.
And I agree, I have no clue what Anker was thinking putting the laptop connector in the front.

OWC Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock has 10Gbe but only 60W of power to your notebook. It also is only TB3 and USB 3.1 as opposed to TB4 and USB 3.2. You may want to get the OWC Thunderbolt Dock (TB4, 1GBe, USB 3.2, 90W) and then use a separate 10GBe adapter.
Have not test the speed, but SOHO Dock from CalDigit looking promosing
There's great information in this video, but there's some confusion: the first devices are USB hubs, and only need 2 USBs to work so they can split their ports more cheaply without using USB 10 or 20Gbps, while the last ones are thunderbolt docks (as correctly listed in the caption); so this isn't a list of USB-C (which is only a conector type) and thunderbolt docks, but of USB 3 hubs (and one dock) and thunderbolt docks

Hi, You need Display Link Software on your Mac to get the Display Ports to work.
Did you use Monterey for testing? I have not been able to make HDMI work on my dock. I have a MacBook Pro M1 with Monterey 12.1.
Yes, everything latest. It’s a MBP 16” M1 Max so it has to be latest.
Having a hell of a time finding a TRIPLE external display dock for my work MacBook Pro.
The Tobenone can not extend to 2 external monitors on M1 when the macbook is open, only when closed.
So the Razer Thunderbolt 4 Dock is perfect for the M1 Max Macbook Pro? Any problem so far?
I use the Razor Dock with my M1 Max Pro and no issues so far. 4K LG-Monitor connected with USB-C, MacBook charging over the Dock, no MagSafe connected. Since the MacBook is towards the Front of my Desk, while the Dock is at the back, the Connection to the MacBook from the Front of the Dock also makes perfectly sense.
Hi maybe you can try eGPU Blackmagic, it has two Thunderbolt 3, 4 USB two and one HDMI.I working with three Thunderbolt Display, plus external HD and other. Excellent solution but Apple spot selling

I do with my M1 Max. I have 2 27" monitors at 165hz. I use Display port as HDMI can't hit that refresh rate. The TS3Plus is amazing and works great for me, I have zero issues AND it keeps my MacBook Pro charged.

Do NOT order the Mokin dock linked in the description for MacBook Pro M1. It does NOT work for the M1 processor, despite him saying he connected two HDMI monitors to his MacBook. The video is titled "for MacBook Pro M1" and the first dock is NOT compatible for M1. This is stated in the product description and apparent in the Amazon reviews.
@@TheH235 the video is titled for Macbook Pro M1 Pro. If you have a M1 chip, and not an M1 Pro/M1 Max chip, of course it doesn't work. There is a difference. That being said i have been looking for a dock for a while and it's so difficult to find the perfect one, I don't know why apple doesn't make one themselves
My dock experience. NOV8Tech USB C Hub HDMI Multiport 7in2 , 14" M1 macbook pro , Monterey 12.1. HDMI does not work with my Benq EW3270L monitor.
Having the port for the computer on the front makes the most sense for a dock that sits on a desk, that way I can just plug one cable
Into the front of the the dock when I get home and I’ll my stuff connects. Why would I want to route my cable from the back to where it needs to be

Unless you keep the cable dangling from behind and then route it to your laptop.
You could be using this hub/dock on a table, on the go. Or maybe the laptop is to the side of the desk. Maybe it's connected to a high end Windows computer.
Just because it doesn't fit in your workflow doesn't necessarily mean it's a design flaw.
I bought the Anker and it didn’t work with dual display on M1 Max. You didn’t even mention that bro. Thought you were going to help find out if displays work work with the docks, dual, open and closed. What happened?

@@NuanDaa I was doing some research and indeed the Anker just mirrors the HDMI image from both HDMI ports, instead I'm going with the Razer TB4 dock and 2 USBC TB4 to HDMI 2.0 cables so I can run my M1 Max with dual 4k displays at 60hz :D

This is info that I got from razer website. So you only able to connect 1 display for M1 macbook.
the razer support external monitors, one just need to have cables that translate to usb-c

It does though as it was my second pick after testing with both my MacBook Pro M1 Max and a Mac Mini M1.
It works just fine. I'm using it with my MBP pro 14". The connector upfront required some creative placement. The only thing is the 2 hdmi does not work at the same time. I'm using an hdmi and the TB4 plug in the back. .
I was confused by this statement from Anker as well, but I'm pretty sure they mean the straight-M1 Macs as those are hardware limited to one display out. M1 Pro/Max Macs should be fine!
The Caldigit TS3 Plus is my dock of choice. I've had the one in my home office since 2018 and it's been flawless. I have another one for my work office and my wife now has one for her home office space.
Perfect port assortment, capable of driving a 5K screen on the display ports and a second 4k screen, headphones, mic, 5gbps USB and a 10gbps usb port as well. My only gripe is that the ethernet port is still 1gig and I run 10 gig connections at my house to the file server so I have the Sonnet 10G thunderbolt adapter plugged into a second TB port on the laptop. 2.5 or 5 gig would have been nice.
Everything just works though. It's not cheap but it does everything and does it well. When my wife stepped up to a new macbook, it was an easy choice to get a 3rd one for her.

The Anker is not compatible with m1!?
I am using a 16`` M1 Pro, and my display can charge it over USB-C with 95 W. I think that is more than enough to operate because your laptop won't consume that much energy. I know that it can charge up to 140W but that's not needed when you are using it at your desk always plugged in.
I’m curious if the ANKER option actually works with M1 Macs considering the Amazon link description states it’s not compatible. I assume an additional driver may make this work?
I have the same question. I am using a 16" M1X and our IT department bought it for me. Haven't ordered my monitors yet, so I couldn't test it.
It does, as I explained in the video. I tested it with dual displays and file transfer speed tests. It is likely not officially supported which is why Anker is stating that. I tested the dock on an Macbook Pro 16" M1 Max and a MacMini M1.
@@jeradhilltech I had a client that had the same dock and it would not work on a 2020 intel based Mac OR the M1 Pro 14" he just bought. He was using HDMI to HDMI for both of his displays. I was able to make it work on both Macs - even the M1 Pro - with one HDMI to HDMI to one display and the other USB-C (at the Anker dock) to HDMI at the display. Connecting with HDMI to HDMI to both external displays mirrored the two external displays and that was it.

That Razer dock DEFINITELY does displays. you just need a thunderbolt to HDMI 2.1 or Thunderbolt to DisplayPort 1.4 cable. So you could even drive high high res - high refresh rate resolutions! (ie 1440-170hz/240hz)
Any usb hub is a display adapter if you have another adapter. Still wouldn’t do the Razer dock due to the connection reason I mentioned in the video.
@@jeradhilltechFor many working professionals, three thunderbolt 4 ports are much better than having a few HDMI ports. Having the thunderbolt ports there gives you a lot flexibility to plug in monitors that have HDMI/Display port 1.4 ports easily while also being able swap these out for high speed thunderbolt SSDs for example. I think you’re misunderstanding Sam’s comment here. He’s saying that the Razer dock NATIVELY supports connecting displays just like the Anker dock. It’s just doing so in a arguably more flexible way. As again many would say that a thunderbolt 4 port is far superior to having a HDMI port.
This was useful but the fact that you left out the speed of the Ethernet ports was a drag. I’m looking for a dock that I can connect to my NAS system for the fastest throughput; so the speed of the Ethernet ports is important to me

Why is there not just a simple dock with multiple USB C/Thunderbolt ports (i.e. 4 or 6 of them)? Is this too much to ask for?
Must be a limitation of technology. The Razer dock has multiple USB-C ports but none of the small portable hubs have more than two. There is a hub from Satechi that has two USC-C ports but there are not many that offer it.
Apparently such a thing is either not allowed by the specs, or the lack of appropriate controllers. USB-C/Thunderbolt is annoyingly much more complicated than original USB hence the lack of hubs/docks.
90 watts not enough to to keep the MacBook charged? You sure it’s not just charging slowly? Didn’t think the M1 used more than 30 watts for cpu and whatever for gpu
Best Thunderbolt option is HP Thunderbolt Dock 230W G2. No HDMI anymore unfortunately.

I grow ever tired of reviewers who don’t know the differences in actual use, between thunderbolt and usb devices… docks in this case! Thunderbolt is supremely faster than usb, not only because I of it’s asynchronous data transfer protocol! The best dock - thunderbolt - is the CalDigit TS3!
He also fails to understand that fast charging on the new M1 MacBook Pros (14 & 16 inch models ) only happens with the MagSafe charger. He also appears to think that USB C is faster than USB A … which is ridiculous because type a & c only refer to the connector types … what matters is which revision of USB is supported by the peripherals, the ports and the USB cables.
True. Bought TS3 for my Macbook Pro 16 M1 Pro and it works well.

On the 14-inch MacBook Pro, you can fast charge with the following combinations of power sources and cables:

96W USB-C Power Adapter + USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable
96W USB-C Power Adapter + USB-C charge cable
Pro Display XDR + Thunderbolt 3 cable
External display with 94W power delivery + Thunderbolt 3 cable or USB-C cable

@@blackwersus I think when apple wrote USB-C charge cable, they are referring to their own usb-c charge cable they sell. It means that it support 96 watt of charging. If you have cables already, check the product page of the cable if it support 100 watts of charging. If you don't have the product page. Get one of those USB meter tester. If you don't want to spend money on a meter, try plugging it in and if it doesn't charge to 50 percent in around 30 minutes. It's not a fast charging cable.

I was so excited when I started listening to the beginning of the video on what you were going to test, but you missed the mark big time. Just saying you could attach two monitors is not good enough, you needed to specify if you could use extended mode or not. With the M1 chip ALMOST ALL of the "adapters" will support two external monitors , but only in mirror mode meaning the two external monitors show the same thing (completely useless). Without that differentiation I can't confidently buy any of these which makes the whole video useless. 🥵
Thanks for calling out how frustrating it is to see all these docks with laptop-in on the front! Definitely not a clean look for any desk and a very confusing design choice.
why talk about anker hub ? anker say : Not compatible with M1 MacBooks
In other words we have a bunch of garbage. Also don't know about the rest, but I know for a fact than Anker dock doesn't support multi display configuration with any of M1 chips.
So I have no idea what is it that you claim you tested.
Also it is admirable to hear that you feel good recommending Anker dock. Other customers on both Amazon and Anker own website don't feel the same way though.

@StateofTech you burn more power than 90 Watts with your M1Max MacBookPro? Really? You would need to be on constant 100% power consumption all the time for that to be the case (and even then I'd be sceptic) . Otherwise I don't believe that this is a true statement. The 14 inch model comes with a 96 Watts power brick and does also come with the Max processor.
Also this processor is extremely energy efficient and in most cases does not even come close to 90 Watts total consumption. So in most cases, if not nearly all, it should charge.
Please prove me wrong.
