  • In this video I'm comparing seven different remo drum heads on my favorite snare drum with the same mics, recorded in my drum studio.

      My same choice. Its the one with the least reverb and has more control from what i can hear.

      For me needs more overtones. P77 sounds better to my taste. Or CS Dot.

    Powerstroke P3. I like the balanced tone and punchy response. I like the way it dampens high frequencies and keeps the low tones tight. I had originally chose Powerstroke 77 but after listening again its the Powerstroke P3 coated, definitely.

    Definitiv das Remo Emperor X in high tuning. Top. Spiele ich selbst auch und ich liebe den trockenen Sound und die leichten Obertöne die nicht so extrem daher kommen.

    I love both the Emperor X and the Powerstroke X. Both at the mid high tuning.

    Great video man! I have the same snare and I’m forever trying to find the perfect head! I think the Emperor X in the medium tuning was the best? Do you tune your snare by ear or do you use a drum dial, tune bot, etc. to get that great sound? Thanks!

      You're right it's very ringy/bell sound. It's a DW snare & I have quite a few. In my opinion the head does the snare no justice. I have many combinations ie the Evans g1 & it's tight. No ringy/bell sound & without any moon gel or damper.

      @@icepick859 These Remo heads in my opinion are not good for the snare. I have Evans & Aquarian heads on my DW snares with no ringtone, very dry. Some people like the ring/bell sound.

      What heads are you running to get that dry tone? I'm having a problem with ringing in my snare too. It's a DDRUM reflex snare

    Nice Video! I like my snaresound dry and with kinda no overtones at all. But its different for every style and taste.
    Sometimes its hard for me to get the dry sound I prefer on my snares. Maybe you could make a video about it, I really appreciate your work!

    I liked the powerstroke p77 medium tuning second best but the powerstroke x, medium tuning was my favourite for that snare.

    Am I the only one who loves the X14? Served me well for years at clubs, festivals, stadiums and studio. Nothing else for my steel snare

    Thanks for the video. I like the P3 in High or Medium Tuning. To me the mid-range is a bit more controlled, the overtones seem to be at a much higher frequency than the others, but I think this would be easier to control with some outer dampening.

    Emperor X at medium tuning takes the exact idea of a great snare sound right from my mind. I just got this exact snare with stock head and sounds okay bit I ordered an X based off this video. Thank you, can't wait to finally achieve that perfect sound!

    Hallo! Ich bin beginner Schlagzeuger... und möchte Ich Dich fragen. Welche Drumsticks benutzt Du? Ich habe eine Sache anmerken, wenn benutze ich Sticks 16&7/8 inch L und 0,61 inch D, dann Remo CS 0114 einen schlechtesten Rebound (hohe Einstellung, in schwarzer Punkt) hat.

    For liveliness, openness and versatility all the way Ambassador. For a little bit of a pre-dampened and more controlled sound with less ring the CS. These both heads are for me the best snare drum heads on the market. (ok, Evans also has 2 very good heads... :-) )

    Medium tuning is definitely the way to go👌🏽 you get the best of both worlds, what more do you want? 😂 also I don’t use Remo heads anymore but when I did, on my snare I would use a 14” powerstroke p3 and on my toms clear remo pinstripes 😎👌🏽 but now I use a Evans HD Dry snare head and Evans EC2 clear heads on my toms. And of course on my bass drum I use an Aquarian Superkick 3 head

    I dunno about the snare the heads are on... I kept watching to see if there would be a head that got rid of the that metal ring sustain... Low tuned coated P3 & P77 Powerstrokes were the most effective..

    I think in general the thinner heads held their own at high tune, at lower tuning, the thicker heads sounded better.

    Thanks for the hard work,but your defeating the purpose ALL RIM SHOTS,it's either ringing from rim,or clicking from rim depends what head you got on. Sorry pal!!! That's what I'm hearing.

    After 40 years of playing I can tell you that nothing frees up a snare like a coated Ambassador.. His snare just sounds bad and ringy.

    What about the x 14? The best to my ears was the CS. Ambassador did good too, but I know it´s centre is too weak for heavy hitting. P77 wis nice too. P3 and X were just too dry.

    Guess powerstroke is the only choice for overtony metal snare like this one. Way too much overtones otherwise. But still dunno what to choose for my piccolo maple snare

    Wow! This has to be one of the liveliest drums I have ever heard, with a really annoying upper midrange ping. Under close miking conditions, this drum just cries out for a Genera Dry.

      iRide uWatch he always makes rimshots, and therefore 66 % of the sound are the same: 33 % for the snare, 33 % for the rim.

    I don’t like the overtones of that snare though and it kills the heads comparisons, use a better drum, I’m not really a DW fan like that, I’m a Yamaha, Tama, Trick or Sonor fan. Just started liking Sonor since they’ve gotten much better but still prefer the others I listed!

    I have nowhere near the experience or skill of the ^producer, and I mean no offense, but I really don't like the metallic clang that is SO prominent here, especially in places like 3:32 and elsewhere. That is why I prefer the sound of a nice wooden snare. I was honestly having a hard time paying attention to the subtle differences between heads, because of that overpowering metallic clang. Someone else made a comment that it sounds more like a bell than a snare. I wouldn't go that far, but I certainly understand his point! I'm sure that mufflers or dampers would cut down on 'some' of the noise.

      Different metals give you less or more ring. Brass shells are generally quite ringy. Hence a slight muffling usually cures the issue when it's a problem.

      He's got that bad habit that so many have --- playing rimshots every stroke.
      It's crap, and won't get you high respect or good gigs that are going anywhere. That's magnifying the drum's overring.

    To each their own but that snare drum is so dry it’s practically dead I have an old seamless sonar and has way more body I don’t think any of those heads could cure that snare drum- One Trick Pony
