Great sounding snares, iIm also really grateful you mentioned their tunings. Im curious about how you mixed them, so a mixing video would be amazing as well. Thanks for making great content!
Thanks mate! My mix for a lot of these videos is done through my interface (Soundcraft UI24r) with some extra plugins on a drum bus in OBS where I record in to. It’s honestly pretty standard moves when it comes to EQ and Comp. No gates in this video to keep it real, basically zero reverb (just room mics). Drum bus has a fair amount of saturation and parallel compression.
And the P77 with the mod is two 7mil plies with a centre dot. So 14mil. There isn’t another head in the remo line up with the same plies/weight AND a centre dot. The old black dot emps were 2x 7.5mil (if I remember correctly) with a dot - very close.
I've had times where I bought a brand new P3 coated snare head due to Ambassadors being sold out. I'd cut the miffling ring out so I's hava an Ambassador. The onlu difference is that the P3 coated are a coated clear film, rather than an oaque white coated film.
Nice man. Very interesting! You should make a video trying the Benny Grebb tunning technique. The one that the lugs are all in kind of different tensions. It's pretty cool! Cheers
Is this a new Benny method? Your description makes me think of the Mashoff technique that went around a bunch of years back - which I have tried and does ‘work’ but it’s not for me haha.
Doing the mod does bring in a lot of attack and brightness that the snare is missing, but also brings in some ringing depending if you like it or not. I don't know if there are other Remo snare heads can do the similar thing without needing to do the mod. I do like the extra attack and brightness it naturally brings in, but I'm also the type of drummer that doesn't like a lot of ring on the snare.
Definitely a compromise of extra ring, but I feel like it’s the sort of ring that a gel can tame without destroying the openness of the drum. I’ve been playing the Aluminium with a regular snare weight on the modded head since posting and it feels like a good balance
Using a pinstripe will get you really close to this too. The “dampening” element will be coming from the edge instead of the center dot, but it will be SO close to this mod
Ply wise - yes! But the centre control dot makes a huge difference. This feels a fair bit more focused and durable than a pinstripe to my ears. Worth testing!
Thanks! Unfortunately not, hence the need for the mod. For one, the dot on the P77 is on the top - but that probably doesn’t really change anything totally. However all the other dot heads have different plies. Both in number and in thickness. There’s isn’t a straight 1:1 match in the remo lineup currently.
That's an interesting idea. I love the rimshot with a P77, but what would drive me crazy is that the ghost notes always were more choked and dead sounding. That livens the ghost notes up, but the rimshot becomes a little wilder. I wonder if there's an in between somehow.
DUDE HELL YES!!! Im so glad someone made a video on this! I recently tried this on a p77 I had lying around and it’s night and day. Way more open and responsive!
Seems like a great mod for those of us who like the open tone of a single ply head (Ambassador, Ambassador X, CS), but who hit too hard for the durability of them. I end up keeping single ply heads on my snare drums for so long (because I'm broke and only change heads when absolutely necessary) but I literally end up blowing through them. Literally. I play them until they break. I probably blow through a snare head a year lmao. I've also gone as far as breaking a lug closest to where my rimshots come in contact. Curious how this would affect the other Powerstroke heads that are single ply. Great video!
My thoughts exactly. After my Paramore snare video I’ve gone back to using more single ply heads on my snares, but I play 2B’s and hit like a moron, so this mod I feel is a lovely best of both worlds
Hey dude! I love watching your content! Your drums production is also pretty amazing! I have a concern about this mod, if you remove the outer ring of the head, it would mean the P77 would have really similar feature as the controlled sound X coated head... he p77 has 2 plies of 7 mm each and the CSX is a single ply head of 12mm . Maybe you could compare the P77 mod with a CSX to see if it really worth the effort of removing the ring and the fact it's kind of "waste" the technology of this head! With the price of the heads I'll always much rather having 2 different heads that can make my toms/snare sound differently rather than 2 of the same one! I hope my comment makes sense!
I actually had the exact same thought. The CSX is my usual go-to drum head on all of these drums (except the C&C Aluminium) and I will say, the modded P77 it felt different to a CSX. But I will do a comparison at some point because I want to know that same answer! P77’s ain’t cheap. For now, we can at least confirm - this sounds sick.
I’m going to do a test between the two but keep in mind the Coated CX is 1 ply 12mil, the P77 is 7mil x 2 ply - so 14mil. So not the same. Interested to see how much of a difference there is
Sometimes, the heads will do it for you. Right after you’ve got the drum sound set. Same for the center dot. Right after the first take. 🤦🏻♂️ We went through 3 P77’s failing on one song before giving up on them. Such a shame, since they’re wonderful heads.
Honestly much prefer the unmodded version. Too much ring with the modded version, no point in even having a P77 at that point just use a CS or black dot
Or you just get an Evans Heavyweight and you don't have to worry about the horrific Remo coating on top ;) To be fair, modded it sounded much better, didn't stiffle the ring of your snares!
The cast bronze snare came to life with the modded head
The super high tuning definitely appreciated the extra openness!
George knows what’s up! Great vid.
Hell yeah he does!

@@EliGreenDrums Great! Thanks!
Remo should just bring back the black dot emperors already, that's pretty much what this is
Extremely similar. Maybe this could inspire them!
Or just get an ambassador X
@@Veghead211 no center dot!
@@EliGreenDrums the CS coated black dot is the same as an ambassador if you added a black dot. Both are 10 mil 1-ply heads.

Good mod idea!… I did the same with a Evans HD dry because it was too, much to dry.

Awesome video thanks for all the hard work. doesn’t modify the P 77 basically make it as a reverse dot?

I’ve been using the modded P77 on the Aluminium with a snare weight brass since posting and it feels like a great middle ground!
@@EliGreenDrums Ohhhh me gusta

It’s so good! I might have to do a comparison to similar heads like the CS and CSX to see if the modded P77 offers anything different to those
Wow, i like it and will try it.
Let me know how you go!
This is a great mod! Gonna try this on my brass snare asap
Come back with results!!
The Emperor X doesn't have the damping around the dot that the P77 has.
It’s also significantly thicker. 2x10mil plies vs the P77’s 2x7mil.

Can you chase the Tre Cool snare from Dookie
Tre’s got some amazing snare tones! I was actually thinking of doing some of his
Has a more ring to it which i like
@matthorndrums: try this on Luke's snare?
Dang Luke’s drums already sound pretty dope!
This is actually so huge
Game changer!
Modded it sounds ready for some Slam
Big TANG energy
Why not just buy the non coated power 77? Sounds just like the mod and its basically the same specs. Works well on my Pork Pie snare.
The clear is the same spec as the coated according to their website, both have the 7mil control ring.
yep. sounds like the emperor
But lacking the 5mil control dot
Mod 2: Cut some part of the rings for secrets
As in smaller sections of the ring instead of the whole ring?
@@EliGreenDrums yes, leaving the muffling section only between the lugs where you hit the drum, so it's 1/10 of the whole ring
@ctrodrums interesting. Next time I pick up a P77 I might try it
@@EliGreenDrums Awesome, of course you can cut every 1/10 of it then do a shootout for a video! Might be a personal sweetspot somewhere.
