Hi Toby, Thanks I appreciate the comment. Your in luck I created a video on exactly this topic some time ago. You can see that using this link ua-cam.com/video/BMHmAtWHXvI/v-deo.html enjoy
Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.
Once again Alan, you’ve made my day with an amazing video, definitely gonna try these set ups but with smaller hooks because I have never caught a snapper off a pier only pinkies! Also good to learn for the future so when a get a ‘tinny’ and can go out more a fish I can catch bigger fish!
Awesome Thank you for the positive feedback. Of the piers small paternoster rigs like these ones work a treat ua-cam.com/video/Ezd_zfOAkIM/v-deo.html the snapper rigs in this vid will be perfect once you get a tinny. Thanks
Thanks, we have a members area that has countless tutorials and workshops including how to rig all the different types of baits on a variety of lures you can find out more at www.fishingmad.com.au/member thanks
Alan, this was an excellent video. I'm preparing for my first Florida snapper trip in July and wanted to know how to rig my line. Although I will probably need a bit heavier egg sinker, your design should be perfect. Well organized, easy to follow with step-by-step, this was the exact video I was searching for. THANK You! Tony 2 Hooks
Thanks Shayne, I appreciate the comment. I hear ya, I cant wait to get out for fishing. Lets hope we can get back out in a few weeks. What do you think you will target first ??
@@fishingmad would love to go for snapper, but i still need to get my kayak gears sorted haha. would a paddle kayak be able to get out far enough for snapper?
Yeah 100%. My mate who comes kayaking with me a lot has been using standard paddle kayak and managed to land a few really nice snapper last year. There are also some spots locally that you dont need to go to far out to find them
Missed this one when it came out mate. Good video again. These are great rigs and once you get the hang of those wraps, it's quite easy to do. But I've got lazy and time poor over the last few years, so now I buy em ready made. I might sit down on a day off one day and make a stack of em.
Must admit over the years I have bought many premade rigs. Being in lockdown has been a good opportunity to start creating my own. And you realize there pretty quick and easy to make.
Thanks Jared, yeah they are really good rigs for local snapper. I Cant wait to get out there and see other fellow anglers out there soon. Lets hope they loosen the rules in a couple of weeks
Thanks Alan . I can't wait to get out on the Yak im about to install the Garmin stricker 4.5 combo. If your ever out Williamstown way about 300-400 of Willi beach you can land some good size snapper
Thanks Tom I appreciate the comment. Yes mate 100% you can catch good snapper only a few hundred meters off williamstown beach. Last year I caught a 5 kilo and 6 kilo snapper near the reef opposite the footy ground and you also get plenty of pinkies.
I use a 3/0 circle hook as the bottom hook and a size 4 circle hook as the top hook. Top hook for live bait and the bottom hook for either a cut pinfish or a frozen sardine. Other than that, I use the exact same rig and love it. Just use a heavier weight for where I fish
Great video Alan, i use the same setup except i tie the bottom hook the same as the top hook i find it quicker, hasn't failed me yet.Feel for you guys down there, can't get out there.Hope things get better soon, cheers from Qld.Just subscribed.
Hi john, Thanks for the comment and welcome to the channel. Good to have you with us. Thats a very good suggestion which certainly would be quicker. I will have a play with next time i venture out. Hopefully will be in a few weeks.
I sure hope so. Im going completely mental aswell. Actaully most of my local mates that i talk to are going crazy aswell. Fingers crossed were back out in a week or so
With half a pilchard i like to use a 2nd free running hook to help Hold the bait. (as in not tied to the line just running free on it, also allowed then 2 have 4 hooks on a paternosta rig in stronger currents. 2 hooks tied on 2 hooks running free to hold bait) tho TBH once i started using circle hooks i dont look back. Every fish hooked in side of mouth, dont swallow it, easy to remove and less hard to fish you releasing.
Awesome vid Alan. I’m struggling to put a pillie or silver whiting on to the hooks. Any chance on a short tutoring how to put a pillie on these two hooks rig??

Your very welcome, yes that the only sinker that I use. Small pea size sinker on the inside of the swivel so it can run down the the snelled hooks. Sometimes ill even fish with no sinker at all.
Going live with an online store on the fishingmad website hopefully this week. This will have stickers, hoodies, hats, beanies, shirts etc. The sticker on my kayak was specially made up, i can always try and get one made up for you
yes 100% you can do that if fishing deeper or very tidal waters often in those cases ill use a paternoster rig instead, we have some vids on how to do that on the channel aswell
The snell rig is really designed for full pilchard or silver whiting, if you want to use half pilchards your much better using a paternoster rig i have video tutorials on that on the channel. Hook sizes are better for that and much better casting distance.
Loving the information in these videos jist caught my first little snapper the other day keen to get back out and try this rig out off the beach. But i do have 1 question why is it that the sinker is above the hooks if its abit rough and ive got to use a bigger sinker will this rig still work. Cheers fella.
Hi Alan, great vids mate, really enjoy watching them. I bought myself a little boat at the end of summer and now chompin at the bit for lock down to finish and get out there. Quick question... would It be fair to say to use the double hook for snapper and the single for pinky's and same size hooks for either rig? Cheers mate :)
Congrats on the boat purchase. Yeah thats a pretty good assumption. When snapper fishing ill often have 2 rods out. 1 with double hooks and one with singles. If im just targeting pinkies then i will only use 1 hook and even drop down to a 4/0 or 3/0 or use soft plastics. I hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
Would this be good on a party boat that rigs much differently here off the Gulf Coast of Texas? The party boats here for snapper use 12oz bank weights at the bottom with a simply loop knot (so additional weight can be used), then from there up about 1.5ft is a swivel, then tied off the swivel bottom is a 2' or so leader to a 6 size circle hook. Main line is tied to the top of the swivel. We are in 200' of water and the current is fairly strong, hence the 12oz and sometimes 24oz of weight. Just want to maintain vertical, minimize tangles with other nearby anglers on the boat and still fell the bite. Suggestions? Thank you.
I use glowing lumo beads as an attractant and to protect knots from running sinkers etc., but I'm curious to know how they help stop the rig getting tangled up?
The lumo bead is completely optional. I find it provides a buffer between the sinker and knot to stop the knot from wearing out, and I have had odd occasions where the sinker and hooks have been wrapped up. Ive used the lumo bead in between the knot and sinker now for many years and its become a habit of my setups. Again completely optional if you dont think they add any benefit.
@@fishingmad - As I explained above I use them the same way that you do, but I wasn't aware of any benefits in relation to avoiding tangles. I was curious as to how that worked, that's all. All good.
All depends. If im on my kayak sometimes only a few hundred meters to a few kilometers. If on the boat I usually fish spots like werribee, willaimstown, cardinal at altona, P2, T10, spoil grounds all which take some time to get to.
You can either put a very small ball sinker ( pea size ) just above the hooks inside the swivel, or unweighted . You could also do one above the swivel but thats not our preffered way
Hi Ian, Your in luck I created a video on exactly this topic some time ago. You can see that using this link ua-cam.com/video/BMHmAtWHXvI/v-deo.html enjoy
100% yes, it just can be tricky to cast because of the long leader length. From a pier you could also consider a patanoster rig like this ua-cam.com/video/r41F_di__e4/v-deo.html which is what i would use
No we never use snell rigs when land based fishing, we always use paternoster rigs when land based fishing because you get far superior casting distance.
Thanks Peter, Yeah I agree 100% that a sliding hook rig works really really well. Especially locally. I often fish without any weight. ill try and do a video to cover this soon.

Yep 100% they will. Hot tip Pinkies go nuts for raw chicken.
Hey Alan, what rods do you recommend to catch snapper with bait?
Have a look at this article I wrote on that topic fishingmad.com.au/article/how-to-catch-snapper cheers
Might be a silly question but is that little sinker all you need or do you need to attach a heavier running sinker aswell? I'm new to all of this
Do you know if this rig will work for surf perch?
100% it will just drop the hook size to something smaller if your catching smaller size ones
@@fishingmad thanks so much!! Can I also add another bead to the second hook?
100% it can work as an attractant
So while fishing with this rig you leave it laying completely on the bottom of the sea bed or keep it suspended ?
just use a very light sinker or no sinker and you will find the bait will stay in the strike zone. Not stuck in the bottom.
What work better circle hooks or octopus hooks?

100% yes, it just can be tricky to cast because of the long leader length. From a pier you could also consider a patanoster rig like this ua-cam.com/video/r41F_di__e4/v-deo.html which is what i would use
Can you tell us how to cook stingray
Man those are some really small sinkers for port Phillip Bay. That's not for land based fishing?
No we never use snell rigs when land based fishing, we always use paternoster rigs when land based fishing because you get far superior casting distance.
Hi Alan why don't you try a,,,,, sliding hook rig,,,,it will slide on the hook trace,,,, to match other baits,,,,,,trust me it works ,,,,,
Thanks Peter, Yeah I agree 100% that a sliding hook rig works really really well. Especially locally. I often fish without any weight. ill try and do a video to cover this soon.
i can't wait
