2014 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L. Noise In Drive Belt Area. Replace Belt Tensioner
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 лип 2022
- The customer originally thought the had an AC compressor failure as the rattling noise only occurred when the AC compressor was running. Problem was a worn Serpentine belt tensioner. Replacing the tensioner required partial removal of the AC compressor and alternator.

Your drive belt is on wrong, the smooth part of the belt ride on top of your tensioner
I see what you're referring to. The belt should go over the lower idler not under it. You are correct I just checked the routing. Good catch I'll get him back in and correct that. Thank-you.
How Long Did It Take To Do It? The Mechanic Shop Wanted $800 Plus Tax Just To Replace It, I Said No Thanks I'll Do It My Self.. Last Time I Wrenched Was In High School..Lol! But Looks Easy Enough.. I Have Just The Basic Tools, I Hope I Have Enough Tools To Do The Job...🙏
Since the belt was routed incorrectly from the time you got it, is it possible that the routing just needed to be corrected and the tensioner NOT get replaced? It seems it would create a bit more tension on the belt.@PhillipBailey
@@toddnovak5361 im thinking the same. makes me think the tenionser was never actually tightened when the customer replaced the idler pulleys.........
I just did this job a couple of months ago. Pull the battery first then pull the alternator. This will give you more room to see and work.
+1 for this. Made removal much easier.
I know this is a year old but good job!👍 my 07 tensioner started making noises also but not that bad. Figured I’d search a vid on it and voilà! Thanks for a quick straight forward video. 🤙
Watch the belt routing before and after. I originally had it wrong on one of the lower idler wheels
@@PhillipBailey thanks I’ll take a look. 🤙
Glad I saw this video when I was going to replace my belt tensioner, made me realize that I probably just needed a new bearing and that was all I needed for my '05 Tacoma, great video!
Glad it helped you.
Well I did it, and as some other have said, it's no fun time. The compressor both bottoms bolts broke. That problem alone took almost as much time as the job itself. But I got rid of the rattle, everything is back to normal and the tensioner was the culprit. Since there was next to 0 tutorial on the subject, this chanel provided much help. Thank you mr. Bailey. Cheers.
Glad it helped you
I was bad enough that the ac compressor had to come out, but then also the alternator? The design gets worst by the minute! Great tip to fit alternator back on Phillip. Glad it all worked out in the end!
I just wasted 2 hours of my life trying to pull the AC compressor first! Pull the alternator first! Makes life way easier.
Wow nothing like taking something simple and redesigning it when you said built a truck around it I spit out my coffee lol thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills
I have Same rattle noise on 2002 f150 and Chevy express 2008, thanks for you video.
Thank you. Replacing the timing cover, thought I had to remove the strut or motor mounts to be able to get that compressor off. Lower bolt is an ass
Belt needs to go under the top right idler and over the bottom idler, smooth side of the belt should always ride on those smooth idler pulleys
I have a 2013 Tacoma and about to do this same maintenance. I had a question... wondering why you chose to go below/from the wheel well instead of from on top? I'm a driveway mechanic, and it's not as easy for me to lift the truck. Overall great video though, I'm glad to have seen it, thank you for your specificity
As you mentioned I have a hoist so that's why i went this way. good luck with your repair.
I took a look in the engine bay today, you were right to go in below
This was very helpful, thank you! My truck is making the exact same noise and I was suspecting the tensioner but this confirms it I think. How long would you say it took you to replace?
It's quite an involved job. I'd say at least 2 hours.
@@PhillipBailey thanks for the reply!
Mine started this but the A/C doesn’t have to be on. Hope its not the one you had to replace
That lower idler pulley, the belt is routed backwards. It’s supposed to go over it with smooth side of belt on top not grooved on bottom
Thar is correct. Good catch
Nice
Hi Phillip. I had a hard time to localise that noise either. First I thought the tensionner pulley was bad, after I changed it the noise was still there. But your vid confirm the tensionner assembly is the problem. Thank you. And do you know what cause that horrible song if it is not the pulley ? How does this fixed part can produce a song ??
This one was rattling I believe due to the tensioner spring being loose. There are lots of other bearings that could be noisy such as AC hub bearing, Alternator, idler pulling, water pump and power steering pump.
@@PhillipBailey Yeah, indeed. But I used the big screwdriver trick to listen every pulley, and the tensioner seems to be the culprit. Loose spring I would guess. Tacoma has 320000km and this original tensioner. Anyway thanks for your reply. Best whishes, Chrisitian
Hey mate quick question, doing that job right now and the top bolt where the alternator goes the upper one is missing, where those the same size as the other ones?
Yes I believe so.
What's the part number for the tensioner pulley or for the bearings? I don't need the whole tensioner. Just the pulley or possibly the bearing.
I'm sorry but I'm out of the country and can't get the number. Your local parts supplier should be able to look it up.
So the engine casting has a hole for the ac compressor bolt and the other 3 are in the bracket? Never seen anything like that. If the bolt that goes into the engine casting breaks that would be a nightmare to resolve.
Welcome to engineering 101...
@@PhillipBailey Yeah that's a terrible design. I have to do this job and I'm concerned about that one compressor bolt snapping off in the block casting.
Don't struggle with the ac bolts just take the alternator out it's easy
How many miles were on the truck? Just curious, am thinking of buying a 2014.
225000klm or roughly 139000miles
@@PhillipBailey Thanks
It looks that you routed the v-belt by the wrong side of lower idler No, this idles is not ribbed
I have to do this soon, anything you wouldve done different? thanks
Not really. Some guys remove the battery and tray to get a little more room though.
How long did this take? Ill be doing it on the garage floor some I have no lift.. Would taking out the fan and shroud give more room? And would putting it on ramps help at all? Thanks
@@dougm.635 I think ramps are your best bet because most of the work is done from underneath
You installed your belt wrong, It should go on top of lower idler pulley not on bottom …..
You are correct. Good catch.
Belt is wrong on bottom should go around pully
Yes you are correct!
Seeing that you couldn't even recognize the belt routing was wrong doesn't give me a lot of faith in your wrenching skills.
I guess you don't make mistakes then...
Toyota designed the belt tensioner when they were smoking crack! Worst possible design I ever saw! Toyota has been going downhill quality wise for a long time!!
