- A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician shares some Toyota Tacoma Common Problems from 2005-2015 and shows a very well preserved frame in the rust belt.
In this video we have a beautiful 2008 Toyota Tacoma Manual. I'll share with you a well preserved frame that was sprayed with fluid film from a very early age by the car care nut owner.
Also in this video I'll share with you some of the 2nd generation Tacoma Common Problems that you should know about if you own one or plan to buy one.
The 2nd generation tacoma is a very good truck if the frame is not rusted. very DIY friendly and very well made.

You're not just a mechanic, there is a teacher passion inside your heart ♥️.
Thanks sir.
And back in 2008, American Toyota dealers didn't force you to pay for a 50,000 dollar trim package to get manual transmission. American Car dealers are disgusting today. The rest of the world has access to low priced Hilux with manual transmission.
Most in the USA don’t like that 3th pedal 🤔
You can Thank Obama for him passing laws on higher emissions. This is why most vehicles today are equipped with automatic transmissions.
It’s far cheaper for an automaker to produce a manual transmission rather than an automatic, so in the end, a Democrat screwed over the American people.
Should do a video on undercoating and rust prevention, Please!
I have it
I love Landcruisers as they are rugged and reliable. Absolute weakness is rust. Before buying my 2002 Lexus LX470 I inspected about 15 Landcruisers which were all rusted beyond repair. Why isn’t Toyota take action here??? Even my Landrovers are better protected….
@@Lordoftheflatbushmaybe they dont salt the road as much as NA in Japan
Every Toyota owner should watch this man.
I'm actually taking the day off from work tomorrow to due some maintenance on my daughters Jeep before she heads back to college, Dads got to take care of our girls!
Good luck and have your cash or credit card ready, Jeeps are far from Toyota’s and will drain your wallet 😉
My daughter just turned 16 and I purchased her first car, a Nissan Versa with a manual transmission. There were some tears shed as she learned and she wasn’t super excited to say the least, but she has finally improved and I think she is secretly proud of herself. There is a cool factor when you can do something none of your friends can do. She won’t admit it, but she likes it now.
Sadly, Nissan reliability has dropped to that of Chrysler/Dodge/Fiat and it started with Renault’s acquisition and all the terrible “Renault engineering”. Adding Peugeot to the mix just made matters even worse. Pre-Renault, Nissan could hold its own with Toyota and Honda. Now, not even close. Tell her to baby it or else a never ending repair bill will occur.
@@ozarkliving7263 the main problem with those versas is the cvt transmission. Spencer said the Versa is a manual, and the manuals from Nissan are pretty dependable
@@ozarkliving7263 I agree, but for under $5k and under 100k miles I couldn’t find anything. The stripped down Versa has a dependable 4 cylinder engine and a dependable manual. There are no options on this, it is shockingly bare of things you don’t need and things that can break. I think it will be dependable transportation for her 2-3 mile trips to work and school.
@@Carl5379 makes perfect sense, I might have done the same thing
Keep pushing your daughter to do things her friends can't do, and she'll always be ahead of her peers.
I "got" to learn how to drive manual on a tacoma - my dad and I were at the races, a few beers and few hours later: "You're driving us home!!" as he tossed me the keys. One of my best memories!!
I put a Denso starter in a 06 4runner 4.0 with 360k miles last week and guess what was in there? The original starter! 360k! Amazing!
I've got a 2014 Tacoma Sport Crew cab 4x4 V6 it's been the best truck I've ever owned and I've own quite a few trucks in my day, I've been fairly satisfied with my purchase and I live in the Snow belt of south central Ontario, Canada.
The frame looks brand new, like straight out of the factory, it’s amazing
My dad has a 2015, out of the over 10 vehicles he has had over the years he says it’s the best vehicle he’s ever owned
I feel like I should be paying tuition on these master classes.
AMD - You're content and cars are even more on point since you started the new shop. You're on fire man!
🔥
Your shop is 4 hours distance drive from my house if it closer i would like drop my 2021 toyota highlander XSE to do review for it
You are amazing AMD 👍
Manual Tacoma 2008 4x4 with low mileage and well preserved???? That is a man who has saved well for his daughter’s college education!
I had a 2008 crew cab, sold it with 349,655 miles. Toyota changed the frame at 298,000 miles under rust warranty. At that time I installed a rear axle from a 2014 as my father in law drove it too long with leaking axle seals and killed the carrier bearings. He was the prior owner.
Aside from that, the alternator, starter, engine and trans were original. He does geocaching and that truck had been to 49 states…he would’ve driven it to Hawaii if he could. Great truck.
Good video, of course. Hope you and Mrs. Carcare are well and the business is thriving. Wish I was close enough to use your services.
I am driving a Toyota Hilux 3KZTE diesel 4x4, which look very similar to that vehicle.
She has 500000 hard working km on the clock with no problems since new and is still going strong, touch word.
May I ask where you are driving that Hilux?
how often do you change the oil?
The frame rust topic is a big help. All my Toyotas are clean, but I love to know what to look for. I have a 2012 diesel hilux manual parked in my front yard, and I am just about recieve a 2002 Hilux manual that was abandoned in a container for 5 years (being worked over at my mechanic now, it was free). I also have a 2010 FJ cruiser, I bought for $15,000 with 40,000 KM. My brother was the former owner. FYI, I live in Chile. Hilux are one of the most sold vehicles because of the mining industry, etc. There are massive fleets, and you can pick them up at auctions.
@@steffen7624 in the begin, every 10 000km, but for last 100 000km, ever 5 000km, because I love her so much.😊

Hi! I have a 2020 Tacoma and I want to make sure I’m taking care of it properly… I thought taking it to the Toyota dealer would be good but I’m quickly learning how dishonest they are!
I have recently (last week) found your channel and subscribed.
I don’t know if it’s too much trouble but could you do a video with a timeline/mileage where you tell people what maintenance they should be doing because I’m finding that I can’t trust the Toyota dealer. Not only do they not properly inform me on what I should be doing, they try to sell me products and services that I absolutely don’t need.
Even just last week I caught the Toyota dealer lying to me again and I have a good mind to go back and yell at them.
Anyway, I love your channel!
Thanks!
I think in ur glove box one of the books there is a maintenance schedule, but some services are, oil change every 5k miles, differential fluid change HAS to be changed 30k you can extend the next differential fluid change after, transmission fluid change 60k, spark plugs 60k, coolant 100k and every 50k after that, air filter and cabin filter just take a look at them not really an interval.
I have a 2019 Tacoma, I replaced every fluid in my truck before 49K, and I did my spark plugs too. I intend to have this thing for the rest of my life if possible
@@SteveB88 that’s good but I think it’s a little overkill, you don’t have to do things that early or doing things before the recommended interval
@Frank Pratt The goal of all dealers is "their bottom line. A Toyota dealership license is a money maker. Toyota intentionally restricts the number to dealers. I refuse to purchase a jap auto since the dealers insist on attaching that hand written piece of paper next to the window sticker for nitrogen air and at least 10 more B.S. addons... like paint guard.. so a 50K dollar paint job is so krappy one needs paint guard.... HOW ABOUT APPLING QUALITY PAINT AT THE FACTORY. p.s MY 1993 cheyenne's frame is still solid and it has been driven in the Mid-west rust belt and PA. TOYOTA's are over rated.by those who want to sell the one they want to sell. Try and find a 30 yr old Tundra that was driven in the mid west or PA. Yes... at a scrap yard.
He did a series, search “how to maintain your Toyota”
I have a 1986 Toyota pick up with the classic overheated issue. Had got overheated 3 times on all it’s 36 years.
I've been lucky enough that my 08 Tacoma has spent some time in Tennessee and the midwest (St Louis area about 8 years) and now here in The Carolinas. And the frame is in great shape. But many of them did rust badly in salt belt states. Yes my truck had the leaf springs replaced before I bought it. I know because whoever did the recall didn't tighten the rear leaf spring bolts on the right side. Thank god I saw that bolt hanging out before I drove it!
What a beautiful truck! Wow! Love that thing. Manual transmission, super clean!
I have an 06 Taco...it's a Colorado baby, zero rust on frame and I keep the underside treated...
My uncle had one of these(06). It looked perfect outside. Interior was perfect. Frame even looked good from just bending down. You had to crawl under the truck and look at the inside of the frame near the front. It was completely gone. Like I could put my forearm into the hole bad. The rust was discovered in 2020 so past the warranty date.
This was not visible at all from the outside or just squatting and looking. That experience alone has pretty much put this gen of trucks on a no-go list for me.
@@efil4kizum
The truck was purchased in Virginia, much father south than I’d expect that level of rust. Virginia does salt roads but not nearly as much as a few hours north.
Granted, I’m not sure of the history before that and he did buy it used. It could’ve spent a decade in New York or something
Awesome video! I have a 2011 Tacoma 5 speed manual 4x4. Bought it new. Absolutely love the truck. I consider the manual transmission a theft deterrent device lol. I did have an issue with it getting stuck in 4 wheel drive low one time. Your comments about not using it often enough are spot on. Thanks for all the tips!
5 speed? I have an 08 with a 6 speed manual.

Execellent overview video on an older 2nd gen Tacoma. Thank you and keep them coming!
Your videos never skipped !
Thanks for doing this one now ! Great timing for me !
love your reviews but really like watching you tear stuff apart and put it all back together. keep up the great work.
I had a 2007 Tacoma. Fantastic truck!
This Toyota owner loves this channel, Thank you sir!!!!
That’s the cleanest shop I’ve ever seen, and a great video.
So well done . Thank you .
Great video. I love how you explain and teach in an easy to understand way 🙏🏽.
Thanks Again AMD!! I love my 2015 DCLB 4x4
Thank you AMD for showing us what to look for in a Toyota Tacoma 😎😎👍👍
I have close to the same truck. 2009 2.7l manual. 223k on it. My daughter is 7, but I plan on keeping this baby going for her. Probably will be it’s 3rd engine by then, but ones gotta have goals right 🤣
Outstanding video….. very informative. I’d say that frame was coated from looking at it. And I’d not heard of u-joint indexing. Thanks for the effort in making the video !
Manual Transmission Tutorial by Mr. CCN! Great video idea
😁
I love working on my Tacoma and Sienna. I’m glad I found your channel. Have a blessed 2023!
May God bless you too man, thank you for sharing your knowledge 👍🏼
thanks for the rear spring info. bought an 06 a few years back because it had a brand new frame and more. it has the updated springs.
So much good information. Toyota is a great brand especially the trucks. Thanks AMD!!!
😳 WOW, that frame is in excellent shape
Really nice looking truck! Hope the daughter gets many, many good miles from it!
I really enjoyed this video.
And I don't even have a Tacoma...
Love my Tacoma!
I'm 75. My wife and I learned on manual transmission cars. Also both our children learned to drive with manual transmissions. We only have four grandchildren and only two are old enough to drive. One of them drives a manual. The other, I don't think so.
Love this! Love my 2013 DCSB 6 MT
Once again, a great video, thank you.
TY AMD, another rare gem to enjoy and I did enjoy it. A rare manual shift was great too see and I hope the girl will love driving her beauty and stays safe. Thanks as always for your hard work making these wonderful informative videos for us.

[From the UK, August 2022] What a fantastic walk-through buddy! I have a 'Prado' (1KD-FTV) - & much of this applies to me. As it happens - I've gone over most of the underside with Fluid Film (learnt about it from your side of the pond!). 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I am always impressed with the thoroughness of your inspections and associated explanations of weak points to be aware of and monitor on a routine schedule. I have learned much about Toyota vehicles by watching your videos and will review your channel when I finally make the switch to a Toyota truck. Thank you for your service.
Double thumbs up. Thank you. May God Bless You and Keep You Too.
Got the exact same truck, luv it
AMD, First of all, it is a relief to see your recent oil change video did not break the internet because it is going like a runaway train.😁It is also good to see a manual, made in California Tacoma on your channel! 🤩Even though it is a beautiful summer day, I am so glad we are talking about the Salt Belt and RUST today. In the Salt Belt, doing diligent mechanical maintenance without doing the required rustproofing makes as much sense as brushing your teeth 3 times a day but never flossing. I guarantee your teeth are going to get cavities and your vehicle is going to
rust. 🤨 Congratulations to the owner of this 2008 Tacoma who has maintained it so well. Perhaps his daughter will pass it on to one of her kids some day. 😉
AMD congrats!! 🎉🎈🍾
Your 5000 mile oil change video was linked by an automotive writer on my Google home page other day. 🤘🏻
I love my 2009 DC Sport Taco. They are so much fun to drive, and more reliable than any I have ever owned before.
What a lucky family you have, I can tell your an excellent father and husband, God bless you.
Thoroughly enjoyed the overview! Really nice looking Tacoma there with the manual shift! I first learned driving from my older bro's manual Datsun as a teen & glad I did. They're fun...bottom line! Got my son a white 2006 4runner Sports Edition with the scoop hood 2 yrs ago and that thing runs smooth as can be. The seller who had it before sold it dirt cheap since it had a check engine light and the tc shudder. Hooked up my scan tool and it was the downstream 02 sensor error that triggered CEL. TC shudder just needed a tranny fluid drain and fill along with the internal filter changed. Did all that and some other extras like both valve cover gaskets R&R, thermostat, front & rear rotors and pads, drive belt, all six plugs, etc and ran even smoother after that. Zero frame rust from NC and zero leaks. Thanks again for another enjoyable upload!
Great video! Love my 2006 TRD Off-Road with the 6 speed manual. I have over 233,000 miles and still running strong.
I’ve been coating my Tundra frame in Fluid Film once a year and having great results.
Just listening while working, and I swear I had to double check a couple times to see if Michio Kaku was talking to me about Tacoma’s 😂😂
Thanks! Your videos are great!
i had a 08 2wd reg cab 5spd bought used The frame was replaced but the rest of it was an absolute disaster. A frames rear axle driveshaft everything was just completely rusted.
But it ran great
You are right about never forgetting driving a manual transition. I haven't driven a manual transmission for over 15 years and I still hit on the imaginary clutch pedal in my automatic car when hitting the brake. 😆
On the few occasions I drive an automatic, my left foot never stops looking for something to do.
I loved the manul Tacoma. I wish my 2021 4runner was a manual.
Yes, they should offer a manual 4Runner as well. The manual Wrangler and Bronco show there is a market for more manual SUVs.
Thank you for this video..
How did I ever miss this video!? But, I miss you. I remember when I subbed to you t 20k subscribers. How big you’ve gotten.
The center bearing needed changing by 75,000 on the '96 I have.
Great look at that drive shaft here. Fun to see the differences here.
I own a manual 6 speed tacoma. Love it. Both my girls can drive a manual. One of my girls that is all she will drive.
Very nice "Taco"! I favor those over Tundras, sorry. I used to own an 81 SR5 4x4. I really enjoy seeing other CCN vehicles so taken care of. Thanks again.👍
Thanks for the in depth video. Recently purchased a 2000 Tacoma that is rust free 5spd with 181K miles
Thank you car care nut for putting this out their. I'm the proud owner of a 2015 limited tacoma. Mine is in pristine shape. Has had all the recalls done and the frame since of that is immaculate. I made sure when I drove it when we had a bad snow in ky when they put salt to go to a quarter car wash and spray my frame down. I will keep an eye on the head where you showed. Has 186k on it. I plan on driving mine down to the ground.
I will eventually watch all you videos being a yote tech I learn so much lol
I own toyota watching video after videos .Gentleman he is very knowledge a lot of learning from him.Cheers from Canada
I’m looking at a 2013 double cab 4x4 tomorrow. Thank you fir everything you do for us. If I decide to buy it I’ll bring it to you for the maintenance. I’m not to far from you.
Nice video ! Im in France i got a 2010 Hilux Xtra cab with D4D engine. didnt realise this old school Tacoma looks a lot like my truck !
Great video thanks!
Love the camera man-person work. Smooth.
I loved my 2008 LSD/mechanical rear differential!! For my use was much better than a locker. I always noticed more rust/flacking in the bend of the frame by rear axle. The seperation caused by the curve seemed to cause it more. Currently own a 17 loved my 08 sport but frame felt like a ticking timebomb. Fluid filming my 17 a lot now!
Toyota HiLux trucks are greatly valued in Panama with its mountainous terrain. I’ve seen some with snorkels following the A frame up to the roof for getting through washed out roads
Hi! Great video. Thanks.
Thank you, AMD and Mrs. CCN. The 2009 ACLB 2.7MT just passed 25k miles with a long workout during hot weather between north Idaho and central Oregon. Your advice on the routine is noted in the owner's manual to exercise the ADD monthly, despite the warning on the driver's visor against activation on dry hard surface roads, is spot on. Straight ahead, ten miles a month. After arriving home, I noted the drop hanging from the AC condensate drain, traced the path to the puddle on the concrete where it dripped from the frame behind the right front door. Tacoma World provides advice on installing 25" of 5/8 heater hose to extend the AC drain to avoid that future (corrosion) impact to the frame. That's my next project!
I had a 2008 TRD Off-road. In over 160000 miles the only thing I had do was a wheel bearing and an idler pulley. Rust belt truck that did not qualify for the frame replacement. Have a 2017 now and am keeping an eye on the issues that you mentioned in your 3rd gen video.
Spot-on advice about the 2nd gen trucks. I love my 06 but it has had just about everything under the sun replaced. One other thing is if you start modifying the suspension (which many of us do) you should do the needle bearing bushing replacement for the FT DS. Very common to have issues with those once lifted. If I had to do it all over again I would keep truck stock
One thing I’ll add: the weak motor mounts on the 05-06. And I mean the motor mount perch off the frame itself. I found this out the hard way as I just bought an 05 with a tilted engine. I assumed it was just a collapsed mount, no big deal, drove fine, easy fix.
What I found was that the perch had broken all the way around and completely collapsed into the frame. Toyota quietly added a reinforcement plate under this perch in 2007 I believe. No recall that I know of.
There is a gusset kit available to reinforce/repair this, but you must remove the axles, steering rod, and front diff to get in there with a welder. Not exactly a fun time.
It’s typically the driver side that goes first, and my frame is not rusty, so take a peek! Definitely easier to fix when they’re only partially cracked.
Thanks for the great videos AMD!
Good review I have a 2016 Access Cab and looking under this 2008 it is almost the same design in fact some of the parts from the 2008 might fit the 3rd Gen. I spray my frame with Fluid Film every September living in New Jersey that is a must
FInally! A video from you on the 2nd gen Tacoma! I own a 2011 Tacoma that I brought used back in 2020. Previous owner wheeled the heck out of it. The interior was kind of dirty, dog hair, dirt and mud stains. I had it professionally detailed prior to getting it. Both CV's boots were torn, The bilstein shocks from the previous owner are worn to hell as well. I did most of the fluid changes on mine except for the brake fluid, and Tranny fluid and filter. Its still going strong at 277K miles!
Still a lot more work to go for my truck before I start modifying it into an overland vehicle!
Nice looking Tacoma
I have a 2006 Toyota Tacoma 4wd
With 78,500 originals miles oh my truck is manual trans
Wow that is low mileage.😀
We are almost in the same boat, as my 2006 Tacoma has 76,000 miles and lucky belonging to Tacomaworld alerted me of the need to apply Fluid Film annually and has saved my frame from rust, living in the rustbelt.
Edit: Mine is a manual too.
I'd wager Krown Rust Proofing is keeping that frame rust free.
My 2012 v6 has developed a valve cover leak at 145k miles and has some weird electrical issues here and there but I think it’s due to the dealers gps tracking system, apart from that it’s being very good since I bought it early 2020.
Excellent review again AMD ... you should do a review of a 3rd Generation Lexus RX 350...👍👍👍
My first Toyota is a 1992 2x4 22RE 4 cylinder 5 speed manual transmission. Still on the road ……
I bought an 06 from a co-worker who bought it new... best $10k I ever spent!!!😄😄😄😄😄😄
Good filming, camera person. And great information. Thank you!
AMD has developed a long and obviously loving relationship with the camera person, Mrs. CCN. We hope she develops her cooking channel.
@@charlesbranch4120 If you review his video from a few weeks back , AMD introduces us to his new shop assistant who handles the camera work etc. I believe Mrs. CCN runs the office.
Toyota did a frame recall a few years back I had that same exact truck in a dealers replace the entire frame no cost to me. That’s probably what happened with that one
This one has an original frame. Because it was preserved it never had holes.
My father taught me on a manual, a '94 Tacoma pick-up, which I drove for about 2 years. After that I would always have an automatic...but even till this day 18 years later, my right hand is always on the shifter 😄
Sir you are a true blessing to this world. Thank you. My dream is to build a community where we have 50 homes in a beautiful setting where I can have the top people that I want to influence my life. Sir, when I accomplish that, one will have your name on it. :) Much love brother.
