    I built a turbo banshee. Used a blow through setup. Had to pressurize the float bowl and the top of the carbs too so the slides wouldn't blow open and stick. Had to run a separate fuel system for when the motor started to make boost using a electric fuel pump , progressive pressure diaphragm that would just feed the powerjets in the carbs so at low or no boost it the carbs would function normally. On methanol at 21lbs of boost it made 168hp at the tires . Anyhow there's no doubt that you can successfully turbo a two stroke people have been doing it for a long time. Guys like tyson racing , Dan Hull, Matt shearer have all built brutally fast turbo banshees ! Not to mention all the snowmobile builders that have been doing it even longer .

    • @StupidFastJohn
      @StupidFastJohn  4 місяці тому +11

      Thats awesome, 168hp is nuts! I kmew theres people doing it but i dont really see anything online about how theyre doing it. Nothings being documented. Alot of the snowmobiles use special valves and/or are fuel injected. Mostly multiple cylinder stuff too. Havent seen a single cylinder be successful yet either. Doesnt mean it hasnt been done but again something different that only few will try 🤙

      I've been doing blow thru mikunis by using a pitot tube in the charge pipe so it changes the atmosphere in the carb and keeps the fuel in the bowl. Just sealed the rest and use pulse pump. Then it doesn't require boost regulated pressure or anything.

    • @petemcpeterson6205
      @petemcpeterson6205 4 місяці тому +1

      @@kartnerds does that work at 20+ lbs of boost ? The amount of fuel that I needed was a lot more than a 65lph pulse pump could deliver. On a 500' hill race id burn over 5 quarts of methanol in one pass .

    • @kartnerds
      @kartnerds 4 місяці тому

      @@petemcpeterson6205 I've not run over 20 this way but I don't see why it would be an issue. Currently doing a 20lb build but draw thru. There's a really short clip of a gx390 running almost 20 this way on my page.
      That would be one giant pulse pump to pull off that fuel delivery tho. Hah.

    • @skyfreakwi
      @skyfreakwi 3 місяці тому

      Wow that's nuts. I don't think my Yamaha has the slides pressurized but I guess it must. Yeah the cv carbs do vent to the bowl so pressurize them and you pressurize the slide. Good to know. The Yamaha in question is a Seca 650 factory turbo. No where near 20 psi for sure. I'm planning on doing a XR600L with a regular slide carb non cv. I never would have considered pressurizing or at least sealing the slide. So thanks for that!

    Did you up jet the carb?
    It might run better with a straight pipe to the turbo, plus an exhaust off the turbo.
    You also might need stronger reeds on the intake. As for cooling, you could add a small water injection, to cool the charge intake temps.
    Another thing, on RDs TZRs, the have a bottle coming off intake to help with the power band.
    Have you watched a channel called "2 stroke stuffing" if not he's made a super powerful 50cc engine of his own design, and has played with supercharging a 2 stroke. Dude is a Wiz when it comes to anything 2 stroke.

Polaris boost 850 and the 850 turbo ski doo . Works amazing in elevation , it’s essentially what it’s for is to keep power at elevation. Although now they have trail versions available and ski doo even has a factory meth injection .

    People have set land speed records on turbo 2 strokes it's possible for sure but the power band can be weird even for a 2 stroke they say it can't be boosted but every 2 stroke is already making booster in the crank case but what keeps the air fuel mixture from blowing out the engine is the pipe so you also might need to make a custom pipe

    John, your explanation of how a Reed valve 2 stroke works is incorrect. As the piston goes up the bore towards tdc, it creates a vacuum in the crankcase, which opens the Reed valves and sucks the fuel air mixture into the crankcase. Then, when the piston moves down the bore, it compresses the crankcase, closing the Reed valves. When the intake transfer ports are uncovered, the fuel air mix is forced into the cylinder.
    I’m sure you know this, you just explained it wrong. Fun video though.

    • @StupidFastJohn
      @StupidFastJohn  4 місяці тому +1

      I dont feel that my explanation is wrong i just believe i missed 2 of the key timing events and discussing their relationship. It doesnt help that my wording is terrible most of the time too. I should have referred to bdc and tdc when i spoke about the position of the piston to the opening and closing of the reeds and i should have covered it in a 360 degree rotation not a "piston up and down" which left it vague enough for misinterpretation. This is typically why i dont do alot of in depth explanations because not everybody understands how im trying to get the info across.
      Theres a point after the combustion dissapaits when the piston is still on the way down after tdc and opening the transfer ports when the piston windows become open enough that the reeds then open. This isnt quite exactly at bdc. It may be at a lower rpm but as the rpm's pickup so does the process and the timing of the process. This is what the piston windows are designed for, letting fuel and air into the crankcase area and up through the transfer ports to smack the exhaust air coming back in for the scavenging effect and those reeds wont close until the piston just passes tdc after combustion. I understand some of the combustion after tdc will push through the transfers obviously and close the reeds on the way down but theres a turning point when that charge is gone that the process immediately reverse's to suck fuel and air in similar to when you put starting fluid in a tire and toss a match in, if you dont fill it with air fast enough after the explosion it creates a vacuum and pops the bead back off again. This is why i said when the pistons going down because it doesnt just flip flop exactly when the piston hits bdc but it is close. Especially on a shorter stroke engine like this one.

  • @peterjohn3180
    @peterjohn3180 3 місяці тому

    If you have a small air bleed into exhaust and a spark plug there you could make use of the unburned charge coming out of the exhaust and it would spool like a jet/ gas turbine.
    2 stroke diesels are turbod but the exhaust timing is not symmetrical, the exhaust is closed early while inlets/ transfers are still open so boost isn't wasted. Overhead valves, exhaust port side piston (OP) is timed ahead or extra valve controls exhaust ports.

We long chats about it and how 2 stroke is so close to rotary engines in some way and i was hooked. I ended up going out and buying a used blaster showed up to his house we all drove it all night had a blast. He basically made him pull his out and bring ot back alive and we would always go off road ripping it together on our blasters. The moral of this story he would always tell me how he wanted to efi turbo charge it and i would laugh saying thats not a easy task. He would always mention to me about his aem standalone he had for small engines he had all these bad ass ideas man to efi turbo it. Sadly i lost him November last year and its so been very tough man but i ended up buying his blaster that we rode together from his family to bring it back to life 😢 he was 38 we where born in the 80s. Skidoo makes a turbo two stroke. But there is a lot more to it than you are thinking. Two strokes pull the air from the crank case, I think bombardier sealed the crank case and an actually put valves in the head to seal off the jugs to stop compression leaking out the intake side, they also had to fuel inject the the engine too. Super cool engine, you should take a look at it for some ideas.

    yeah I like Matt(dirty garage guy) but he was way off on the 2 stroke/turbo video. I have built multiple turbocharged snowmobiles. draw through is the best way with a carbureted engine so you dont have to worry about the boost making the carb piss gas allover.

    You needed to use the mini eBay supercharger. I think that's why those 2 stroke diesels used them instead of turbos

    I would eliminate the expansion chamber exhaust pipe direct mount the turbo to the cylinder also use gravity feed from the oil tank (0w20 synthetic oil) to the turbo and use the pump to scavenge return the oil to the tank also jet a larger 35mm carb and run E85 for the cooling effect use steel reeds for heat and pressure resistance from boost you will also need to port the cylinder to take advantage of the extra air flow from the turbo and accurately measure the flow through the engine to match the max wastegate boost pressure an air to air intercooler between the turbo and intake will also be needed with high temp silicone isolator boots to keep intake temps in check

    needs an intercooler on an air coooled engine,the turo is as good as an expansion chamber so consider bolting it right up to the exhaust port and run a big exhaust pipe from the turbo

    Something caught my eye: the ruber conector where the carb used to sit has an open hole at the top, is it sealed? People here in Brazil put an old spark plug in there with a hose clamp.

    DT engine, stator side crank seal usually works it's way out and causes a lean condition. There's no retainer to keep it from happening like on the right side, not sure if that's also a problem or THE problem but I'd imagine the added pressure would make it happen faster.

    Boost is built, then throttle is closed under boost. Bypass valve should help drivability; Vacuum operating valve to bleed boost from the charge pipe back to the inlet pipe.

    draw thru Journal bearing turbos need carbon seal conversion and good consistent oil pressure to function for more than a few minutes. ballbearing turbos work with less oil and might accept oil from injection pump, but youll find it hard to find a small enough ball bearing turbo for a 175cc engine. You felt how hot everything on the turbo gets, the oil system for the turbo needs a cooler as well if the bike is ridden on the road and not just 1/4 mile at a time...

    Sounds like the crank seal.. that’s why it’s wanting to runaway and struggle to take off.. you’re blowing boost into the bottom end.. the premix from the carb lubes the bottom end.. your essentially pressurizing the bottom end

    I wonder what effect putting the turbo before the expansion chamber would have, keep in mind what the term expansion means and what putting the turbo after it would have. Just a thought.

    very nice idea but some misinformations about turbos. 1. there is nothing like multiplying air pressure… you can‘t get 4 force out of 1 force. This is not how physics works. I think you meant that the compressor side will rotate faster than the exhaust side. 2. you use a blow off for not hurting your turbo when you have all this not used air pressure, it will escape through the turbine on the intake side, pushing the shaft in the opposite direction of it‘s normal direction. This can wear your turbo much faster but it will be okay for this project. Still it has nothing to do with the existence of reeds in the system.

    • @StupidFastJohn
      @StupidFastJohn  4 місяці тому +1

      Its not misinformation its misinterpretation. The compressor wheel cant physically spin faster then the exhaust wheel because theyre attached on a single shaft together spinning in unison. The amount of air being used to spin the exhaust wheel is alot less cfm of air then what is being created by the compressor wheel therefore that would result in a massive increase or a "multiplication" of the air then what is generated by the engines already spent exhaust gases otherwise how would you create a "boosted" situation of air pressure being forced into the engine if it was the same input and output of air. There has to be more air coming out of the compressor side then what the input into the exhaust side is ultimately, this is why i explain it like a multiplication factor because it has a greater output of air flow then the input. As for the blowoff valve i did not say it has anything to do with the existence of reeds i only explained exactly how the bov works and i said for this system that we shouldnt need a bov with how the engine operates with the reeds and i forgot to mention that it shouldnt have any compressor surge because the excess leftover charge pressure just leaks right into the exhaust and the carburetor slide will cutdown the air through the turbo.

    Isn't the bypass valve supposed to be hooked to vacuum ? That way when you close the throttle it diverts boost out the exhaust as the engine revs are falling , you don't need boost as the engine is attempting to slow , if you're giving it pressure it might be sending your boost out the exhaust ...

  • @Joshua-vr1ey

    Needs bigger carb bigger exhaust more spark reroute air almost like snorkel and rebuild using dt250 side case with radiator and transmission add bigger front sprocket 38 or 36 rear sprocket use 4mil stroker crankshaft banshee 4in rod trinity 285 bored top end and if your really froggy add 20 shot nos if you don't die a man will be born 😅

  • @adambasham5014
    @adambasham5014 3 місяці тому

    So. Having the carb farther upstream than normal and probably not getting as much oil to the internals of your engine are things that might cause some weird characteristics. But with the turbo compressor on that side of the throttle body and no type of blow off you could be building pressure and then causing the turbo to either stall or even spin backwards frow air rushing back through. I think you would have more success if you adapted the carb to blow through, adding a blow off or recuirculator and losing the expansion chamber on the exhaust.

  • @brianfalkner108

    You should boost reference the carburetor but i would do a kiehin pwk air Stryker and you should add a fuel pump for when your on boost so there is enough fuel going to carb when on boose or else you will just suck the float bowl dry in a instant. I believe you can also buy special deep float bowls for the keihin pwk because banshee guys that run pwk's sometimes run them it would hurt. Turboing a 2 stroke is a big learning curve thats you have to go through for sucess everyone who was successful at foung it went through the pain staking process of trial and erorr until they got everything right

    • @brianfalkner108
      @brianfalkner108 4 місяці тому

      Forgot to mention when you boost reference you need to seal the carb real good and you need to boost top and bottom of carb so you don't get whiskey throttle

    It started running bad after it started building boost. I'm wondering.
    If you don't need to change the reed values. I say that because boost never came back down even when it comes back to idle. It went lean when Turbo started building boost, Raising Exhaust temps.
    So bigger jet will help.

    several car companies have been looking into 2stroke valved, fuel injected designs that can run a supercharger or turbo. it seems feasible, but maybe the cost isn't worth the gain for them.
