    I’ve driven turbo diesels for over twenty years and have always let the oil get round for thirty seconds before driving off and the same when stopping let the turbo spool down while it still has an oil supply rather than switching the engine off while the turbo is still spooled up and the oil supply is cut off, not had a turbo problem with any vehicle even at very high mileages.

      10 seconds is enough when when you start the car up because of modern synthetic oils. Any longer than that and you're only letting it run cold for no reason and killing it like that. The sooner you put some load on the engine after those couple of seconds to start warming it up, the better it is for longevity.

    Got a vw TDI 2.0 tune from an english company, definetly very good value for the performance increase. I hade a choice to buy a, user upload and download OBD install device, or have a tech do it. Both options have their advantages. I had a tech do it based on his reputation. You didn't really discuss these two different options. But in the end your getting the same predetermined tune file that's been made on the dyno with the same model car, or at least the same model engine and ECU. The tech said he'd be happy to do adjustments to the map if required. Which along with the guarentee offered is the reason you would have a tech do it over the do it yourself mapping device. When I have the DSG tune installed I will have him look at the turbo map. So it's good advice your offering about the cool down times for it. I hadn't considered that. Thanks for the video. DSG remapping vid? maybe.

    Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. I just bought my first diesel car and am considering some changes. What would you think, good safe figures would be for a 2016 Scorocco TDI 2.0?
    The reason I ask is I have fear of the mapper maxing it out and causing reliability issues.

    I’m seriously considering getting my Karoq 1.6 TDI remapped but I’m concerned about the longevity of the DQ200 7-speed dry DSG box, I used to drive a Fabia vRS which had the DQ200 and many people were mapping them past the factory spec and they were fine but I just wondered if you had some insightful knowledge about how to care for a DSG box when mapping the car since it’d make more torque than a petrol would.

      Definitely, The 128hp version of this engine (With the E87 ECU) will see 40hp and 70lbft more torque on a performance map, but get a performance panel filter. You should also see better fuel economy but this will depend much on your driving style and how you use all that extra power.

    I had a kess remap on my 150hp tdi. Not sure of what the hp is now but im told it should be at least 180 to 190hp. It has made a noticeable difference 0 to 60 and lift at higher speeds for overtaking. Im wondering does my DSG gearbox give the tuning an advantage or not ?

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  Рік тому

      The gearing ratios are better on most DSG boxes, but they do limit the amount of torque you can output in some cases, but most mappers will take this into account and work round it.
      Did you get the DSG mapped as well?

    • @equinoxeparabellum6776
      @equinoxeparabellum6776 Рік тому +1

      @@torquecars no I didn't get the dsg mapped. The guy who did the remap said that my 150hp would gain around 40hp. It's a mark 7 golf estate. He said he wouldn't recommend any more that this as in his opinion this was a safe remap which doesn't put too much unnecessary strain on component parts. I did ask about the DSG system, as i was concerned as he did say there would be extra torque but again he said this would be a reasonable amount as he always recommends not pushing the limits too much. Again he said the dsg system could handle the extra torque and hp. I have to say that the car is driving much better when I ask for power, although I normally drive easy on the roads as here in the UK I don't need another speeding ticket. I have noticed that my mpg on economy drive appears to have increased. I will know by how much soon as I filled the tank to the neck and will calculate that but it could be around 8% better consumption. Certainly I have been hitting some impressive mpg figures on longer drives.

      An em light usually indicates a fault or problem and in most cases a remap will not fix that underlying issue. In some cases (low boost - altering the turbo wastegate profile) may avoid the problem or make the car more inclined to ignore the fault. It could just be a malfunctioning sensor or loose wire.
      This video discusses the causes of EM lights ua-cam.com/video/1HHH2fQh4Vc/v-deo.html

    I have a 2015 A3 2.0 TDI sportback that I've mapped from 150hp to 215hp and about 445Nm. Only mapping, no extra parts. Is there anything else I could do to get some more power and still keep the car in a safe zone? It's a manual gear box. Also do you know the safe rev ranges for the gears? 😊

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  Рік тому

      Hi Buddy, it sounds like you've taken that one to the max already. Turbo and fuel upgrades are next but this will cost quite a bit more than the remap. For performance and a spirited drive I would change gear about 4000 to 4500 RPM - the engine is starting to run out of puff and it puts the car in the power zone in the next gear, after a remap it still pulls through the 5000 region, but I don't feel it worth exploiting this part too much.
      Is the air intake or filter upgraded, you may well be getting a restriction on the stock setup at these power levels, but not by much if I'm honest.
      Intercooler mods will help you avoid heatsoak but if you only do shortish burst of high rpm driving that would be a waste of money.

      You have a 150 mapped to 198bhp and 395 ft lbs. Like pretty much every other map out there, as for the dyno sheet, you verified that independently on a PROPPER rolling g Road??
      Mines the same anyways, oil oil oil oil oil oil oil oil oil. Service it like he'll, I do 9000 miles max but 7000 avg between services with gtx magnates, turbo will eat its seals, then the housing and finally the shaft if you don't.
      Mapped cars = must service as often as you can.

  • @AnIdiotAboard_

    Turbos DO NOT Need that cool down period, there designed from day one to operate at there (lets say) 1 bar of boost level, continuously, a good map (like the manufactures) will control EGT's and infect most now do.
    For every 1c above target IAT, timing is retarded, to control EGT
    at 1440F Derate signals are sent to the ECU to maintain the EGT at the max the turbo can take and at 1560F ECU will enter limp and power down modes until temperatures decrease
    Lets be clear, turbos are designed to OPERATE CONTINUOUSLY at full boost and max EGT, all the start stop start stop, spool up heat up, cool down and crack types of daily driving are what FUCK a turbo over.

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  Рік тому +2

      I just wish most aftermarket mappers would actually pay proper attention to EGT control and management, I still see too many maps with aggressive peaks and settings especially at low rpms.
      They seem more focused on getting a peak power spike as early on in the power band, and I guess in some engines this may be ok but in most (European engines especially) it can cause problems especially when you factor in the daily drive and average drivers habits when it comes to maintenance and care.
      It really pays to use a mapper who knows your engine well, rather than an off the shelf map tweaker, or inexperienced reseller. Some ECU's like the Bosch ones are pretty good at protecting the engine from a bad map, others are not.
      Most of the failed turbos I've seen are actually through excessive wear rather than metal fatigue or failure and I would blame the oils ability to lubricate the turbo properly. It is probably more accurate to say a turbo engine needs oil at the correct temperature and grade with most of the cooking going on inside the turbo itself in many cases so it's the oil that needs a chance to cool down more than the turbo.
      If people actually changed oil frequently and used premium oil blends and the correct grades and formulations then turbochargers will last much longer and you have a wider tolerance for driving the turbo harder.
      However in the real world I still strongly advocate that a turbo has a chance to "run down" even if only at low boost - as you say to ensure reliability but I know some people out there are not worried about reliability.

      @@torquecars I have a 2.0 TDI Audi A3, 2006 - Mapped at 12,000 Miles [Before i got it] by dark side developments, a full main dealer service history, something ive maintained.
      The only thing under the hood that is not new is the Turbo itself, and 4 injectors, an injector failed in the open position at speed and it absoloutly destroyed the thing, luckily it was all on the hot side.
      Ive had the car about 5 years now, and my only complaint about the map, is its dead at low RPM but at 1500 rpm, meaningful boost is available and she pulls like a freight train, and murders her newer siblings :), shes also good for 155mph not the 127mph Audi intended.
      Right now she has 187,143 miles on the clock, everything else (more or less everything else) is factory, some parts have been changed for performance reasons, but all the OE stuff is as it came from the factory.
      She left said factory with 138 Bhp and 295 Ft Lbs (i might be mistaken) 4 months ago on her last ever dyno trip after the new turbo she laid down 199 Bhp and 405 Ft Lbs.
      This is the 3rd mapped car ive owned, and i can say hand on heart, there amazing, and ive never experianced a bad tune or bad company, i did lots of research first mind, but still, good tuners are everywhere.
