Hi Phil, unfortunately the mapping of the effects section is nonsensical in relation to serato. you can use an external midi controller and map the effects section sensibly. Unfortunately, the Pioneer controller cannot be switched to a midi mode. with the second midi controller you can use Serato fully with the Pioneer controller. Unfortunately, the merge effect function is only designed for Pioneer rekordbox!!
And the "no" list goes on: No RGB (just blue) pads, basic sound quality, poor quality faders, very basic quality crossfader.... for $600? Thanks but no thanks, Pioneer. They should call this the DDJ-2JOGWHEELS.
Phil, you hit the points well. At best, Pioneer should have priced the semi-gimmick controller for 399 or 499 USD at best. C'mon, Pioneer, if you're going to include Serato Pro with this device, then at least design the hardware so that it supports that software as such. Add to that, you have a very limited amount of ports in the back which means the controller can't be used seriously in a club sound system. Last but not least, I cannot agree more with Phil on the point regarding the Merge FX knob. The bloody herculean sized nob(s) are a complete waste of (upper deck corner) real estate for those deejays who would never use such feature. I think this could have been an absolutely outstanding controller at the lower middle price bracket had Pioneer rethought the design approach on this unit, especially at such a painful price tag for something so relatively cheap in build quality.
Hi Phil, lets cut to the chase. Within the next hour or so i’ll be purchasing this DDJ-FLX6. I’m coming from Technics 1210s & Pioneer S9 (Serato User). The FLX6 is not a substitute for my current gear, only something for on the go as I keep getting invited to do guest mixes on radio and abroad, where space is limited and need something compact like the FLX6 to travel with. I do loads of scratching and what drew me to this controller were the Jog wheel size and price, i can do everything else manually coming from a turntable background. I’ve seen videos of people doing some really great scratch techniques on this (manually) using serato. Are you saying this controller is strictly not for serato, if so can you provide more clarity than what’s in the video. All i need to be assured is whether my cue points and effects will still work even if the lables are wrong, so I don’t have to go changing stuff back when i reconnect to my S9. Also what’s the quality of the crossfader? I know it’s not going to be SRT or S9 quality but is it still cool for routines? Please reply promptly if you can. Thanks again.
It works just fine with Serato and Rekordbox, there's no reason it'll mess your cues up it's just a midi controller. We haven't done any extensive scratching on it, I doubt you'll love the crossfader but you'll be able to make it work as a backup.
Digital DJ Tips ok since owning the FLX-6 all i had to do is update my serato to the latest version and everything worked as it should. Only downside is the volume is very low, i would consider using an external sound card or jacking it into an external mixer. As for the effects pads it’s not rocket science to work out which effects go where. Jog wheel is good, crossfader is scratch-able.
For me, the mixer section has four channels, completely pointless, if you can't connect anything from the outside, such as turntables. And I thought that Pioneer did something right for a really reasonable price, but in this variant it's nothing special. You just have four audio files active in serato, you can do it from separate channels, and on two channels you just have to switch. That's all the difference.
Hi all, I'm new to djing and started the beginning of the march lockdown but never looked back. I started on the DDJ 200 as I did not know if I would stick to it. I'm now in a situation where I have out growing the controller and in a dilemma of what to choose next. Should I go DDJ 400, DDJ FLX6 or jump to DDJ 800 and by a lap top. I don't want to buy the DDJ 400 to out grow that straight away to 🤔 I mix more old School house, trance and some Acid/techno more a bedroom DJ for own enjoyment
All of those controllers need a laptop. You’d probably never outgrow the DDJ-800, but if you’d rather have four physical channels, the FLX-8 is your only budget choice right now.
might be cheaper and better to get an all in one unit like the pioneer xdj-rx2 or denon prime 2, both of which are excellent for both home and mobile DJ use, as you won't then need to buy a new laptop
Can you think of any other controller which maybe in stock.... Due to global chip shortages can't seem to get a ddj800 so really tempted to purchase this or something similar for same price as ddj800 or less
It looks like this one is made for Djs that just cant get the hang of effects. I forsee this going down in price soon. I guess there is a small market for this controller though. Beginners would gravitate towards this in quarantine.
So what would you rather recommend around the same price range if using serato ? Been djing for 7 years now definitely time to upgrade from my ddjsb2 lol
Thank you for sharing this information. Ive decided to get back into DJing and learned that my ScratchLive interface is out of date so I'm looking into a controller (😑). This one sounded great initially for the price and the fact that it has 4 channels and comes with Serato Pro. Well, you just helped me realize that I almost got hustled. Cant plug my turntables into those 2 extra channels, Serato DJ Pro is trash on here, and NO BALANCED OUTPUTS (and aux)?! Thank you for saving me the time and money!
Hi there, I am an aspiring DJ and feel that I could do with moving up from the ddj 400 I would like to move up to the 800 or 1000 but I am having trouble with finding ones that are in stock, is it worthwhile me buying this controller as it's slightly cheaper than the 800 and 1000?
To be honest I think for this controller for serato is good for sersto to and just because of the different stuff doesn't mean oh its for rekordbox its still works really good for serato its just the labeling that's different. Anything else on the controller is good for serato
@@digitaldjtips portable is not really needed. My plan is, if djing is really my thing, which I believe it is because I was really into playing drums and listen to drum and bass for 15 years, to get something affordable which is as close to the 1000 without going the full way and still have big jogs and 4 decks. I still check for numark, but it seems like rekordbox/pioneer is more my thing Is there anything from Traktor which I may overlook?
just bought a ddj flx 4 but after seeing that serato pro is 250 and that Ive already honed skills with the flx 4 im thinking about returning and forking over the extra $300 for this controller. Since this mimcs 4 decks I think that this is best option that allows me to grow into. Would you agree with that today compared to other controllers on the market with that at this price point ?
Yes, BUT Serato DJ Pro with this is NOT Serato DJ Suite, that you need for Pitch 'n Time (proper keyshifting). I'd stick with the FLX4 and Rekordbox if it were me.
As a DJ since the 90's, I wanted something with all digital media there shared between 2 or more decks & not multiple loads of USB drives everywhere. The 1000 wasn't in UK stock (it would also allow turntables & hardware players input). This seemed viable option until November / December (UK stock in). Also out of stock so used a DDJ400 then after a refund on something else, elsewhere managed to get flx6 & DM40. 2 controllers & monitors for the same price of just flx6.Cant complain. Essentially it is the DDJ 600. It's a 4 channel version with a few extras you choose to use or don't. Maybe the longer high Res pitch adj would have been better over the jogs? But if you're only mixing Rekordbox then midi signals no different sent from this or the 1000. Your just controlling the same software with each, with the same outcome.
Bought an rx2 , first digital DJ stuff I’ve ever used , still played technics and records . I won’t be won over by this modern shit . Just takes away the fun of mixing for me
I have a few questions...I'm coming from a ddj 800...I really only wanna upgrade because of the 4 channels....is it worth it? Is the output sound quality at least the same or better?
@@ScroDiddly those two controllers are 4 channel mixers and both are budget ones, I own S3 but i moved to NI fron RB and can;t help to wonder if I made right decision and I would very much like for Phill to compare these two
Quick question here mate, is it worth switching from my DDJ-SR2 to the DDJ-FLX6? not that there's anything wrong with my favorite DDJ-SR2, but I am just looking for bigger jog , but feel that there is a lot of downside on this nice looking DDJ-FLX6..
That's a tough question, because I wouldn't buy another mid-range controller if I already had the SR2 which is already a great bit of kit - I'd go for the DDJ-1000 so it really feels like an upgrade
I'd love to see you make a 2020/2021 Video about "old" hardware. I'm still rocking my VCI-400 with timecodes and digital inputs that works perfectly with Traktor (Tried VDJ and Serato but I'm not a user so I can't say if it's good enough) it has all you pointed missing (balanced / booth / line ins ...) Also about the "magic effects" you should try the Traktor F1 with Tekken mapping on Traktor. It's just amazing and as the description says it's instant gratification. Anyways, great video I'd love to try this one because of the big jogs as you pointed out, it is a great selling point, even if the big cutter works in mysterious ways with the actual software.
@@digitaldjtips be careful some great old hardware isn't compatible with anything today (unfortunately) i came across some great devices that I didn't buy because I couldn't find a way to be sure they worked on windows 7 (at least) like the xponent from M audio, the first NS7 or the allen heath xone 3D. Hi Phil, I have same controller. But when I play from it sound like bass is very low and hi is very high. When I play with monitor sound good. But when I play with my JBL gig speakers that happen. May I know the reason. Thanks.
I been looking at this controller for few days. Only now find out that with no input I can't add my decks to it, although it has 4 channels, strange. What would be closest to this that has 2 inputs for vinyls. Thanks Cheers
At least it works with my (Late 2020) M1 MacBook Pro + Big Sur & Rekordbox 6! It's only USB powered and plug & play (NO PROPRIETARY DRIVERS)! Can't say the same about my DDJ-1000, that has to wait for drivers to be compiled for M1. So yeah, DDJ-FLX6 is basically an interim 'FULL-SIZE' controller that runs on the M1. ARM SoC's is the future.
hey! thank you for this video. I can't decide between DDJ-FLX6 and Traktor kontrol S3. I’m familiar with rekordbox and traktor so I can get used to both software but traktor less expensive then pioneer . What do you think?
So I use both Serato and Rekordbox. I currently have the DDJ 400 and loving it but want 4-channel control without having to touch my mouse or keyboard. This or the DDJ 800? Or should I just skip it all because I’ve already learned the basics that I need and just want full control and go for the 1000 already?
These are 4 “software” channels. If I use an audio interface to connect external sources (vinyl) to Rekordbox, I assume this can control those? (Mixer controls, not jog wheel controls obvs)
@@digitaldjtips cheers. Just looking for a smart solution that would allow the flexibility of having both a controller and vinyl without going in to top end gear such as the DDJ-SZ2 (or whatever the newer version is now)

As we say in the review, this is not for us a good Serato controller.
Great review that i needed, im in the looks for my first dj controller and i was going for this one. im going more for techno, deep house vibes.
Nice one Richard, this is a good option
Reconsider your choice. Save some money by going with the DDJ400, or save (up) some more and pick the 800/1000. Muuuuch more professional!
Don't buy this. Buy the DDJ-800
Great review. Thank you so much!
Glad to help :)
Just have seen a serato academy DJ explaining every feature on serato software with no big issues
Cool, don't let us put you off it then.
And the "no" list goes on: No RGB (just blue) pads, basic sound quality, poor quality faders, very basic quality crossfader.... for $600? Thanks but no thanks, Pioneer.
They should call this the DDJ-2JOGWHEELS.
Thanks for weighing in Michalis
Thanks for the review! What would you recommend at this pp or under for Serato?
The SB3 is a great option at a budget price range :)
Useful, what is a good cheap Serato controller?
I think more than anything it highlights the demand for a decent mid-range four channel Rekordbox controller.
whats so bad about it when using serato? it just doesnt work...or most of the features/effects dont work?
@@tunefitune135 Why would you not just spend a bit more and buy the DDJ-800 instead? or maybe even a Serato alternative..
Thank you so much i almost bought one of these today.
What stopped you?
@@digitaldjtips you said "it's not compatible with Sarato".
Phill appreciate your feedback on all elements of equipment and all dj related issues😷🇿🇦🎧🎛🎤
No problem Clyde!
Sounds like it's not for you this one Dave
Hello, thanks for your channel. In your opinion, what's best 4 channel unit for Serato?
DDJ-1000SRT
At first I thought you meant DON'T buy, until I watched. Lol. Nicely done. The non-serato part made me write this off though. Not for me.
Thanks for watching Dru :)
Yeah it's definitely aimed at the beginner to mid-tier market, casual users
i have the DDJ-1000 & DDJ-XP1 tandem, but I’d like to see them come out with an DDJ-XP3 with MergeFX encoders, instead of a DDJ-600.
Interesting idea!
Wow this video is awesome. Thank you.
No problem!
Thanks Phil for info my mind is made up that I will get the ddj-1000 as always you and your teams videos very informative
Enjoy the DDJ-1000!
So what would you rather recommend around the same price range if using serato ? Been djing for 7 years now definitely time to upgrade from my ddjsb2 lol
DDJ1000SRT, it costs more though.
Love the way when he talks about EDM he keeps mentioning BIG KNOB. 🤣😂
😅
Thank you for sharing this information. Ive decided to get back into DJing and learned that my ScratchLive interface is out of date so I'm looking into a controller (😑). This one sounded great initially for the price and the fact that it has 4 channels and comes with Serato Pro. Well, you just helped me realize that I almost got hustled. Cant plug my turntables into those 2 extra channels, Serato DJ Pro is trash on here, and NO BALANCED OUTPUTS (and aux)?! Thank you for saving me the time and money!
It's just not "pro". some people don't need any of that and that's fine, as long as people realise before they buy. Look at the Roland DJ707M.
This review was super helpful thanks!
No problem!
Looking to buy this controller for mixing at uni. Do XLR adapter cables exist that i cld plug into these if a club needed it? Great review btw.
Yes they do
Hi there, I am an aspiring DJ and feel that I could do with moving up from the ddj 400 I would like to move up to the 800 or 1000 but I am having trouble with finding ones that are in stock, is it worthwhile me buying this controller as it's slightly cheaper than the 800 and 1000?
If it were me I will wait for one of those
To be honest I think for this controller for serato is good for sersto to and just because of the different stuff doesn't mean oh its for rekordbox its still works really good for serato its just the labeling that's different. Anything else on the controller is good for serato
Glad you're enjoying it with Serato
The rca outputs shouldn't be much of a problem as long as you have an external mixer/mixing board right?
They're only a problem when you want to run long, balanced cables.
just ordered one... edm 4 life :D
Have fun!
I plan this to be my first controller, would you recommend it?
Ddj 400 feels pretty weird now when this thing is out.
Sure it'll be great as a first controller, the DDJ-400 is excellent though for the price, more portable as well if that's something you care about
@@digitaldjtips portable is not really needed. My plan is, if djing is really my thing, which I believe it is because I was really into playing drums and listen to drum and bass for 15 years, to get something affordable which is as close to the 1000 without going the full way and still have big jogs and 4 decks.
I still check for numark, but it seems like rekordbox/pioneer is more my thing
Is there anything from Traktor which I may overlook?
Cool sounds like the FLX6 is right for you
just bought a ddj flx 4 but after seeing that serato pro is 250 and that Ive already honed skills with the flx 4 im thinking about returning and forking over the extra $300 for this controller.
@@digitaldjtips coolio thank you sir - will do. Seems like Pioneer has a huge gap that they dont care to fill
I have the SB2 and was looking to upgrade. Now I’m sad you said it’s not for Serato which is what I use.
It is not the best for Serato but it still works with it. I’d save for the Ddj-1000srt if I were you
So how do I get the microphone to work on this is if it's got a microphone I can't use?
Indeed you are! It's primarily when you want "pro" inputs and outputs that the FLX6 comes up short.
So after 2 years.. Is it still better to use record box instead of serato for this controller?
Pls suggest which controller for beginners
Bought an rx2 , first digital DJ stuff I’ve ever used , still played technics and records . I won’t be won over by this modern shit . Just takes away the fun of mixing for me
Fair enough, use what you like :)
I have a few questions...I'm coming from a ddj 800...I really only wanna upgrade because of the 4 channels....is it worth it? Is the output sound quality at least the same or better?
It is a step down from the 800 to this, you won't like it. Save for the FLX10.
Thank you for your reviews!!
You're very welcome :)
Hey mate good information. Was wondering what laptop stand that is and where can I buy .
Here you go: geni.us/Hm2vgMc :)
I buy this for recordbox definely
Great review, Im wondering if you could do a comparison of flx6 and kontrol s3
Thanks for the suggestion, we'll see what we can do :)
Those are not very comparable in my eyes. Not that one is better than the other. Just very different types.
Personally no I don't think it's worth it for the sake of a bigger jogwheel
@@digitaldjtips Great tip there, but what you recommend for a bit bigger jogs and deck layer, without going overboard on the price range?.. Thanks 👍
That's a tough question, because I wouldn't buy another mid-range controller if I already had the SR2 which is already a great bit of kit - I'd go for the DDJ-1000 so it really feels like an upgrade
I'd love to see you make a 2020/2021 Video about "old" hardware. I'm still rocking my VCI-400 with timecodes and digital inputs that works perfectly with Traktor (Tried VDJ and Serato but I'm not a user so I can't say if it's good enough) it has all you pointed missing (balanced / booth / line ins ...)
Also about the "magic effects" you should try the Traktor F1 with Tekken mapping on Traktor. It's just amazing and as the description says it's instant gratification.
Anyways, great video I'd love to try this one because of the big jogs as you pointed out, it is a great selling point, even if the big cutter works in mysterious ways with the actual software.
Good idea re a video about old hardware
@@digitaldjtips be careful some great old hardware isn't compatible with anything today (unfortunately) i came across some great devices that I didn't buy because I couldn't find a way to be sure they worked on windows 7 (at least) like the xponent from M audio, the first NS7 or the allen heath xone 3D. No idea about Mac
Yes definitely something to watch out for
I bought one. have it for 3 days i want to send back...i enjoy it but left jog wheel not working properly, and as i google, seems to be a very common problem.
Sorry to hear that
Hi Phil, I have same controller. But when I play from it sound like bass is very low and hi is very high. When I play with monitor sound good. But when I play with my JBL gig speakers that happen. May I know the reason. Thanks.
No idea, sorry!
I been looking at this controller for few days. Only now find out that with no input I can't add my decks to it, although it has 4 channels, strange.
What would be closest to this that has 2 inputs for vinyls.
Thanks
Cheers
DDJ-1000
At least it works with my (Late 2020) M1 MacBook Pro + Big Sur & Rekordbox 6! It's only USB powered and plug & play (NO PROPRIETARY DRIVERS)! Can't say the same about my DDJ-1000, that has to wait for drivers to be compiled for M1. So yeah, DDJ-FLX6 is basically an interim 'FULL-SIZE' controller that runs on the M1.
ARM SoC's is the future.
Most DJs aren't in a rush to update :)
do you know a better 4 Channel DJ Pult vor under 600 € ?
PS nice Video
You could also consider the Numark NS4FX.
THANKYOU!!! (serato user)
You're welcome
That will be my dream to get one❤️
hey! thank you for this video. I can't decide between DDJ-FLX6 and Traktor kontrol S3. I’m familiar with rekordbox and traktor so I can get used to both software but traktor less expensive then pioneer . What do you think?
I think you need to decide what software you want to be using long term and then the controller choice is an easy one
Get a Traktor Kontrol S3. DDJ FLX6 isn't in the same league.
If you're already thinking about it just skip the 800 and get the DDJ-1000
These are 4 “software” channels. If I use an audio interface to connect external sources (vinyl) to Rekordbox, I assume this can control those? (Mixer controls, not jog wheel controls obvs)
No idea, sounds a bit convoluted but may work - would need to think it through and test it ourselves! It really is not designed for that though.
@@digitaldjtips cheers. Just looking for a smart solution that would allow the flexibility of having both a controller and vinyl without going in to top end gear such as the DDJ-SZ2 (or whatever the newer version is now)
Great review
Thanks!
Why does FLX 6 reload when turn on the effects knob?
I use HP Laptop Core i5 8th generation processor with 8gb ram
No idea, sorry!
there anything like this for traktor ? so can use this to learn and then play using club setup ? or a good mapping for this one or is there newer one out?
There is a Traktor mapping for this
What’s the next level up controller from a SB3 for Serato users seeing as this one is a no go judging by what you said …
DDJ-1000SRT
Great review! I’m currently using a Reloop mixon 4 and was not sure if this would be an upgrade or not? Do you know if this would be compatible with Djay for iPad?
Yes it should work with that software, but I don’t understand why you would change.
@@digitaldjtips If the Reloop is the better controller I’ll stick with that. It’s definitely got a lot more features
Yeah stick with that if you're happy!
About time your Review-ish of this Controller is up.
Thought you were waiting till they released the FLX7 before you reviewed it :)
( I know your unit was stuck in Customs i am just being Sarcastic)
Our written review is live now too :)
