DIY kitchen cabinet paint. The UNSPONSORED TRUTH.

  • After rolling and brushing the upper cabinets of my kitchen, many commenters wanted me to try and spray the kitchen cabinets. So I purchased this sprayer in the link below and took on the task of spraying my lower cabinets black. The truth is that it's way more work and mess than you think when it comes to a DIY job. I appreciate you watching and would super appreciate if you could subscribe to my channel! Thanks for watching and hopefully you can learn from my mistakes. In this video I used a primer called Stix and also used Benjamin Moore Advanced cabinet paint.

    They make special paint for sprayers that’s ready to go. Pre-catalized is the best for this application. It makes all the difference in the world. The correct type of sprayer also helps. You will always have overspray but the right type reduces it to a minimal. Low pressure high volume reduces bounce back and overspray.

      @@RinkVideo No worries. I was working outside on a large deck so overspray was less of an issue. I figured it out watching another youtuber guy who showed just the knob operation. I'm so happy that I talked you out of it Jackie! To be honest, (and I should have made a video about it) is that living with the painted cabinets is like walking on eggshells. You're constantly worried about chipping and scratching the paint (which happens) so you end up cooking differently, putting the dishes away differently, and in general just a lot more cautious. It's not a great feeling.

    I'm a cabinet maker and refinisher. It's not an easy job at all if you do it well... Anyone can be a bad painter, but to be a good and efficient painter is very difficult. For us to do a complete kitchen refinish in 2 days with a 2 man crew is considered great time efficiency. But to do that, you gotta know exactly what you are doing and do it right the first time. Masking a kitchen properly to be sprayed takes almost an entire day for a single person.

  • @MP-yz6sb

    Oh man I've been waiting for this video. I appreciate your honest feedback on this and your kitchen looks about the same as mine as far as how the finished product turned out. At one point I tried to spray mine also and what a friggin hot mess I had. Seriously...grown man crying. I almost got to the point of saying fu** it and looking for factory white cabinets. Had it not been for what new counter would have cost I'd have done it. All of these YT videos of people saying they painted their kitchen in one sunny afternoon is lying and if they were to put the camera right up to their newly painted kitchen cabinets everyone would see that it looks like shit. I agree with your final opinion of the entire process and the look of the finished product...I would never attempt to do something like this again. And it's not cheap at all. I used $100 gallon self leveling paint (bullshit) and I am very anal about my house and have no kids and I still have a knick or two on the cabinets. If you have a family...forget it. This will look like shit in a month or less depending on how a family lives in their home. But good job man!!!

    You shouldn't be embarrassed about the state of your kitchen. Be embarrassed about wearing sunglasses indoors while talking about the state of your kitchen. Kidding! I think the kitchen looks great after painting and as you said, you can't REALLY tell unless close up if it was rolled or sprayed. I just finished my uppers (rolled/brushed) and yes, it did take way longer than I thought. I was losing my will to live as each day went on because I did it all myself (husband is a terrible painter). I enjoy your very real videos and honesty! What was your final thoughts on the sprayer? Do you think maybe a higher-end sprayer would've made it easier? PS: We don't have as much space as you (with a basement), but I don't see why a spray booth couldn't have been set up outside or in the garage.

    • @RinkVideo
      @RinkVideo  3 роки тому +1

      Lolol that’s a good one Sharon! I thought the same thing! I look like an idiot. Honestly we often wear sunglasses indoors because our house gets smoked by the sun and it shines 300 days a year here. Where the camera is sitting, I couldn’t see the controls and then just forgot to remove shades for the shot. Regardless, it is embarrassing....LOL

    • @RinkVideo
      @RinkVideo  3 роки тому +1

      Whoops I did read your entire comment before I hit send! Yeah I certainly think an expensive sprayer would have helped for sure. A booth outside for me wouldn’t work because it’s windy where I live and I park inside the garage. The thing for me, that I failed to mention, is that painting is somewhat therapeutic. It’s relaxing and peaceful for me. With the sprayer it’s the complete opposite - wearing a mask and the loud noise of the compressor and exhaust fan makes it feel chaotic and unpleasant. Ya know? Your comment is hilarious btw.

    • @sharonpaul912
      @sharonpaul912 3 роки тому

      @@RinkVideo I get it with the painting being therapeutic! Other than having our house look like a tornado went through it, I enjoyed the painting process. And sunglasses inside is no big deal esp when you explain how sunny it is here you live - and looks like y’all have a lot of windows. We like parking in our garage as well, but when working on a project we sacrifice that. I’d totally love to have all that basement space though! It looks like a great setup, even though the work to do it was insane for how quickly the spraying is finished.

      Imagine how good it would look in about 6 months when the white kitchen becomes dated and everyone wants wood again.

    Another great video! What do you think using an airless sprayer, will it also do a great job as the one (compressed air) you used to paint?

    Any updates on how the paint is holding up? Especially that white one.

    • @RinkVideo

      The white was pretty hard and durable. Black not so much. I sold that house and built a new one though so not sure how it’s holding up in the long long run.

    I love the finished kitchen!And the backsplash is perfect with it. Can you tell me the manufacturer and color?

    • @RinkVideo
      @RinkVideo  3 роки тому +2

      Certainly Mary. The paint is Benjamin Moore Advanced. The white is a really popular color called Chantilly Lace. The black is called Onyx Black. I was freaking out a bit when I was putting the black on because it looks very charcoal gray when it's wet but it dries black. The Chantilliy Lace also looked cold when it was wet and then the color warmed up once it dried. I'm the worst at picking colors but both of these turned out to be fantastic choices! Hope that helps.

      Thanks! Can you tell me the tile you chose for the backsplash on the kitchen wall? Is it grey or taupe?

    • @RinkVideo
      @RinkVideo  3 роки тому +2

      It's definitely grey. The box says Grigio Charo. I think is the pretty much the exact tile but different size: www.homedepot.com/p/MSI-City-Grigio-4-in-x-12-in-Glossy-Ceramic-Gray-Subway-Tile-9-99-sq-ft-case-NHDCITGRI4X12/308720005

    why was spraying such a chore? if it looks way better isn't it worth the extra effort? I guess we'll see which ones wear first?

    • @RinkVideo
      @RinkVideo  3 роки тому

      Just all the cleaning of the sprayer and ventilation booth etc. Having to hang them. The mess. It was def more work than rolling and much less therapeutic. But like you say, we’ll see what wears first.
