Great video! I was so confused when I saw the announcement for this device. The only logical reason I can think of, is that they have a surplus of OG RG35XX (shell) parts and OG RG35XX batteries, and want to fase the old chipset out. Maybe to keep one model (the Plus?) in the end and discontinue the rest after their supplies run out. Even then the price doesn't make a lot of sense. Unless they only make it more expensive so they can offer a attractive looking discount later. I'm just speculating though. This is such a weird release at this price point.

I agree with your assumption on reasoning (manufacturing), but I think there is another play here too. I suspect Anbernic has a vision of the future where this 2024 model replaces the base 35XX, and the teased SP model replaces the plus. Assuming the hinge is good, it will give them another more premium feature to justify higher margins out of that device. It seems possible that it will share subassemblies (ex: PCBA's) with the 2024 non-hinge (in many aspects), which will help them drive cost of that device down towards where the base is today. They can just populate a bigger battery, populate wifi/blueooth antennas, etc. Then, the plus and the current base model go away - now you have a very clear picture of who each device is for. If mfg. topics play out, the 2024 will become more price competitive with MM+ so they can still play in the bottom end, but now they've created a bit of a higher-margin top end market with the SP.

*Final* *Fantasy* *VII* The original FF7 is my favorite game of all-time. Got it two weeks after the U.S. release in September 7, 1997 and I couldn’t stop playing or talking about it with my friends at school for two months. I was 16 going to turn 17 and was a junior in high school. Like many American gamers, FF7 was my first time playing an RPG. Prior to it, there were other RPGs like Wild Arms and Suikoden on PS1, but they didn’t capture the imagination like FF7 did. I remember playing it and being completely clueless how to play it. I remember getting to Disc 2 without knowing how to upgrade my weapons and armor. I believe I completely restarted the game twice. During my first playthrough, my favorite character was Red XIII. I remember every time Cloud and Barret were killed, Red was always the last one standing and would save me at the end. I believe there was one day when I played it for 13-hours straight and all I ate were peanuts. I was so immersed to the story and how things were going to unfold. My first complete playthrough, I eventually did use a strategy guide I borrowed from a friend. So I got to like over 30M gil, bought that villa in Costa del Sol, got all the final limit breaks and ultimate weapons, and beat Emerald and Ruby Weapon. I probably spent over 150-200 hours playing it that first time since the highest the timer reads is 99:99 because I got all my characters up to level 99 with every final limit break and weapon. I spent hours and hours of grinding. It was repetition for hours and hours. And yet, I never got sick of that battle theme while casting a 90-second summon like Knights of the Round over and over again. I beat the game from start to finish 4X…. 1997 on my PS1 1K model 2002 on my modded PS1 9K model 2011 on my modded PSP phat 2020 on my Vita slim which wasn’t modded yet The last one on my Vita 2K, that file was already 3-years-old and played it on and off along with FFX. But back in 2020, we were stuck at home, so I picked up playing my Vita and decided to go beat FF7 again. I used to think Emerald Weapon was harder to beat since it has 1M HP. But I didn’t realize how much harder Ruby was until I beat it that final time in 2020. I own multiple copies of FF7…. Original PS1 copy PSP PSOne classic Vita PSOne classic Android Switch ROM on my Steam Deck The Switch is the definitive version of the OG FF7 thanks to the cleaner graphics but mainly for 3X speed hack and the on/off toggle for random encounters. But I haven’t found the time to play FF7 on my Switch Lite except for the first 15 minutes. My Favorite Characters From OG FF7 1. Cloud 2. Sephiroth 3. Red XIII 4. Barret 5. Cid 6. Tifa 7. Aeris 8. Yuffie 9. Vincent 10. Cait Sith I know Sephiroth tends to be the most popular. It’s usually between him or Cloud for most popular among FF7 characters, but I actually find Sephiroth a bit overrated. Not as overrated as Vincent Valentine. I have friends who love Vincent and use him as an avatar. I don’t get it. Is he better than Irvine from FF8? Sure. But I don’t get his appeal other than him slapping cheeks with Seph’s mom! While I love Tifa as a character and she’s my ultimate waifu and favorite female video game character, she has never been one that I’ve used a lot in battle until…. Remake. But I know what a true badass she is as I’ve seen that 20-minute video with her beating Emerald Weapon all by herself on UA-cam. I will always pick Tifa over Aeris but I do like Aeris/Aerith too. While I do place Yuffie 8th on that list among favorite *characters* in terms of how she fits in the overall story, she’s actually a top 3 when it comes to using her in battle. I still hate her for stealing my materia, but she’s a badass when it comes to battle. Her ATB fills up fast and if you get 4x cut or you mime that move from the previous character’s 4x move, she can get 9999 4x linked with critical hit while using her Conformer. Her accuracy is excellent. And her Level 3 Limit Break, Doom of the Living, hits 15X. My final 3 in battle went from Cloud/Barret/Red XIII to Cloud/Barret/Cid to Cloud/Cid/Yuffie. Cloud, Cid, and Yuffie all have excellent multi-hit limit breaks. While fighting Sephiroth at the end, I need the long-range from Yuffie before Seph rises up and does that 2-minute Super Nova. Yuffie has a faster gauge than Barret and gets more critical hits than him too. Now my character rankings for the FF7 remakes could look very different. All-Time Favorite Video Games 1. Final Fantasy VII 2. Shenmue II 3. Tekken 3 4. NBA Street Vol. 2 5. Super Mario World 6. Ridge Racer (PSP) 7. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 8. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! 9. Street Fighter II’: SCE (Genesis) 10. Super Street Fighter II (MAME)
This is me, but with Final Fantasy 4 (Or Final Fantasy II released in the US) I'll spare you my entire personal history with that game and all of its releases and remakes, but suffice to say, I respect anyone who is a fan of the series 👍
This seems like a typical situation where the company wants to phase out an item due to a particular component. The only reason this situation is tougher is because everyone seems to only buy these things for GarlicOS lol. So the fact that Garlic isnt as good on the upgraded chipset makes it a tough sell.
Black Seraph’s sickness and lack of progress on GarlicOS 2 has really left a vacuum. The CFW space for this generation of Anbernic devices are all incomplete. I’ve used minUI and MuOS the most. But I miss Garlic.
I can't remember which model, but the Anbernic I've tried out at a small game shop looked like a Gameboy, back in 2023. It didn't run Game Gear's Batman Returns properly. Usually when I push the start button on that game, it takes me to a menu where I can choose different range weapon and a special attack (batmobile). But instead, the start button just pauses game. And when I tried out an Anbernic that's shaped a bit like a PSVita, it was too complicated to start any games on it. Not even the shop owner knows how to navigate through it. So I did not pick up any of those two Anbernic models. So eventually, I got an R36S instead. I can easily play any Gameboy and Game Gear games on it no problem. Nothing too complicated. Just the best one for me.
There is a new feature actually. I checked the official launching video on anbernic's channel and the NEW thing here is that for systems that require an analog stick to use or a touch input, you can simply tap one time on the power button and it will do it automatically for you. Pretty good in my opinion.
At time of writing, there's a sale on Aliexpress starting at US Pacfic time 12 AM on the 1st of April. My theory is they're running low or want to discontinue the old model, so this is releasing at a higher price so people will exhaust the stock of RG35XX mk1, when it's sold out, mk2 will come in at $45/be perpetually on sale. I'd still always get the wifi model
does it mean it also needs a different firmware then the regular RG35XX ?I just recieved mine and Garlic OS for the og RG35XX is not booting. It all makes sense now after watching the video.
Would like to see a mobo swap to see if it works on the OG RG35XX and also if it still has the same screen stuttering issues (that very few reviewers noticed or mentioned).
I wish Anbernic would just release a modern chipset version of the RG280M, that's like their best handheld design undone by being stuck on OpenDingux and on such an older chipset, it really brings it down. Even if it just had a RK3326 like the 351 line, it'd be enough of an upgrade.
It would seem "pointless" for the advertised price, but then you get deals for $25 in Aliexpress for this one like recently, then you see why it was a ton of value. For someone like me that only wants a machine to play retro games, this console for $25 is way better price than $50-60 for WiFi and BT.
I have an Anbernic RG 350M and it seems the support has dried up on it. Is this a pointless upgrade from something like that? The metal build is solid on the 350M, but honestly the weight and it digging into my hands makes it a pain for long sessions.
I'd say that this is just something to replace the older RG35XX rather than supplement it, so when the old ones run out, and the price drops below that of the PLUS, it will make a little more sense.
The reason was the chipset and Anbernic's push to invest heavily into their own OS. I can see going forward all their systems using the same OS, and they are showing off their frequent updates too on YT.
After more than TWO whole years with pretty much the same hardware, one would think they would improve them, not downgrade them. I would LOVE to pay $20 more for a CPU/GPU update on the H version so I can have a 90% playable N64 experience, the 4:3 screen is a must.
look at the 353 series, in your case RG353PS and 353M. I have the vertical 353VS and the 4:3 screen is gorgeous, it plays N64/DC well and have very nice options for custom firmwares
I love my OG RG35XX. Never upgraded to the plus. It's disappointing that Anbernic has muddied the water with the brand confusion but I'd still highly recommend the OG or the Plus. It's a great handheld.
Sounds like they're just trying to update the original to make the RG35xx line more consistent. If they're going to make a bunch of different versions of the 35xx, its a lot less confusing to just say they all have the same power. Not to mention it'll be easier to make custom firmware for all of them.
Very well explained. 👍 Ambernic is making the same mistake as Sega, too many different hardware versions to confuse the hell out of their target customers. 25:12 That looks awesome. Are you ware of any clam shell handheld that can have Steam OS or Linux installed?
What is the battery life like on this thing? How long is a charge held? I know that's pretty subjective, but give me some numbers, like say if I wanted to play some pokemon. How long does it take to charge? My phone battery will just drain, which is why I don't like it as an emulator. I want to get something like this for my kids when we go camping, or take long trips and don't have a charger on hand. I've also considered modding my old GBC, but I'm kinda reluctant to mess with it, because it was the one gift my dad ever got me.
Uhm, since there are so so many devices nowadays.. which "slightly larger horizontal" device would you recommend just for snes/gba games? I do have a steam deck but i dont really like it for retro gaming since it's so heavy. I've got the RG351P but it's too small for me personally. :/
@@RetroGameCorps Seems like it's completely sold out on their website. :/ But I appreciate your recommendation. The 4 Pro unfortunately is way out of budget.
I'd get the either the PowKiddy RGB30 or the Anbernic ARC. I have both, and both are excellent. The ARC has a really nice hand feel, decent screen and excellent controls. However, the 1:1 screen on the RGB30 is perfect for stuff like the GameBoy and similar handhelds.
Hey great info. Just a few questions. I just bought the xx h and I want to know if you recommend any OS in specific and if I can use a fast charger with it? Thx, I made my decision based on your videos, keep going
Very interesting video I almost bought one because of a video I saw. In your opinion and with your experience if I'm looking for to buy one of these which model would you recommend? I mainly wanna play retro stuff nes, snes, gba etc
I ended up with one of these from Amazon because I thought it was the RG35XX Plus. It was a Black Friday deal so I'm not too disappointed, and I have no issue navigating the Linux filesystem without WiFi. But yeah...why did Anbernic do this? I mean, other than to get rid of old stock. It confused the heck out of me when I received it (with a corrupted SD card as well) and the label on the back actually said RG35XX+.
No longer content with making their handhelds obsolete by releasing a new version a few months later, Anbernic are now making them obsolete from day one.
I got the 2024 model for $35 so cant really complain. Also didnt really know anything about these emulation devices. Just happy I can easily play old GBA and SNES games.
It seems like Anbernic release a new handheld every month and only 1 or 2 of these are decent. Surely they must be making profit on the other 10 duds but i don't understand how.
Great video. I've had my RG35XXH for about 2 weeks now. Definitely feel like it's the definitive version of this range. Managed to get mine for £41 from TikTok shop. That's almost £30 cheaper than other places at the time.
The boot time for batocera v40 on my RG35XX Plus is exactly 45secs. with a full-blown 128GB single sd card solution. I don't know how to achive 20secs., though...
When you buy a device, if it says that it comes with a 64GB card, that means it will have the games pre-loaded. Most of the cheap handhelds (like this one) will come with the games.
@@RetroGameCorps when the games are pre-installed, that means the opponent, thank you for the information, I like it, I send it to my classmates and fellow players.

1997 on my PS1 1K model
2002 on my modded PS1 9K model
2011 on my modded PSP phat
2020 on my Vita slim which wasn’t modded yet
The last one on my Vita 2K, that file was already 3-years-old and played it on and off along with FFX.
Original PS1 copy
PSP PSOne classic
Vita PSOne classic
Android
Switch
ROM on my Steam Deck
The Switch is the definitive version of the OG FF7 thanks to the cleaner graphics but mainly for 3X speed hack and the on/off toggle for random encounters. But I haven’t found the time to play FF7 on my Switch Lite except for the first 15 minutes.
My Favorite Characters From OG FF7
1. Cloud
2. Sephiroth
3. Red XIII
4. Barret
5. Cid
6. Tifa
7. Aeris
8. Yuffie
9. Vincent
10. Cait Sith
I know Sephiroth tends to be the most popular.
All-Time Favorite Video Games
1. Final Fantasy VII
2. Shenmue II
3. Tekken 3
4. NBA Street Vol. 2
5. Super Mario World
6. Ridge Racer (PSP)
7. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
8. Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
9. Street Fighter II’: SCE (Genesis)
10. Super Street Fighter II (MAME)
What an essay! Respect for your love of FF7.
I wish you had gone into more detail.
This is me, but with Final Fantasy 4 (Or Final Fantasy II released in the US)
I'll spare you my entire personal history with that game and all of its releases and remakes, but suffice to say, I respect anyone who is a fan of the series 👍
Surprised they didn't at least include the better shoulder buttons.
Anbernic still has my kid's money from LAST OCTOBER and no longer seems concerned with finally shipping out any device at all. Never again.
Unfortunate to see one of the titans of handhelds underperform as such. But thanks for the video.
Anbernic be like, we haven't released something in the last 5 minutes, quick, throw something together before the boss finds out XD
There is a new feature actually. I checked the official launching video on anbernic's channel and the NEW thing here is that for systems that require an analog stick to use or a touch input, you can simply tap one time on the power button and it will do it automatically for you. Pretty good in my opinion.
Appreciate the video's man! I am looking forward to install onionOS on my anbernic rg35xx h, i bought thanks to your video's. Cheers!
I also ended up landing on the H. It seems like a more capable device.
Why not batocera
At time of writing, there's a sale on Aliexpress starting at US Pacfic time 12 AM on the 1st of April. My theory is they're running low or want to discontinue the old model, so this is releasing at a higher price so people will exhaust the stock of RG35XX mk1, when it's sold out, mk2 will come in at $45/be perpetually on sale. I'd still always get the wifi model
I just got a 35xxh from TikTok for 34 bucks. My first handheld and I’m really enjoying it.
I need to replace 2024 version screen. Will the rg35xx work on the 2024 model version.
Thanks a lot from France for this review !
I'm 44years old, I work a really boring job & need so something to kill time while at work. Which one should I buy?
Has batocera improved for the 2024 version
does it mean it also needs a different firmware then the regular RG35XX ?I just recieved mine and Garlic OS for the og RG35XX is not booting.
Bought a RG35xx 2024 from the TikTok shop for 23.00 ship . And it coming form anbernic them selves . Super pumped
It would seem "pointless" for the advertised price, but then you get deals for $25 in Aliexpress for this one like recently, then you see why it was a ton of value. For someone like me that only wants a machine to play retro games, this console for $25 is way better price than $50-60 for WiFi and BT.
This might be the hardest I've ever laughed at one of Russ's video titles. Bravo, I was drinking when I did so and now I need a napkin.
Complete review in the title, in one word: "Pointless". Russ really isn't pulling any punches today.
I have an Anbernic RG 350M and it seems the support has dried up on it. Is this a pointless upgrade from something like that? The metal build is solid on the 350M, but honestly the weight and it digging into my hands makes it a pain for long sessions.
I have a question sir. Where can i find a downloadable batocera for my original rg35xx? Or can i just use the once for the plus and H?
Anbernic sometimes it makes just no sense 😂
Let's put that on a t-shirt now. 🤣
What’s your opinion on the H700 versus the RK 3566? Does the 3566 beat it out in power for emulation? I think that would make a cool video comparison.
Awesome review! I appreciate a review that looks at the good and the bad of a console!
Review: Pointless 💀
Nooo 😭🤣
My life: pointless
This comment: Pointless 🫠
I got into the comments just to say how much I love his revealing his opinion in his title. That takes balls and I love it.
A blunt object : pointless
After more than TWO whole years with pretty much the same hardware, one would think they would improve them, not downgrade them.
I would LOVE to pay $20 more for a CPU/GPU update on the H version so I can have a 90% playable N64 experience, the 4:3 screen is a must.
Maybe look into the base model retroid pocket 2s, pretty similar size to the H around $89 about 20 more than the H
look at the 353 series, in your case RG353PS and 353M. I have the vertical 353VS and the 4:3 screen is gorgeous, it plays N64/DC well and have very nice options for custom firmwares
out of all of the rg35xx devices which one would have the brightest screen/best screen for outdoor use?
Thank you Russ for your honesty as always🐰👍🏼
It is possible to connect an external gamepad with analog joysticks and play games where they are needed?
I love my OG RG35XX. Never upgraded to the plus. It's disappointing that Anbernic has muddied the water with the brand confusion but I'd still highly recommend the OG or the Plus. It's a great handheld.
Very happy with my RG35XX H. Unless the N64 and Dreamcast performance was drastically improved I’ll happily sit this one out.
I've also considered modding my old GBC, but I'm kinda reluctant to mess with it, because it was the one gift my dad ever got me.
what were the two WiFi dongles you used ?
Uhm, since there are so so many devices nowadays.. which "slightly larger horizontal" device would you recommend just for snes/gba games? I do have a steam deck but i dont really like it for retro gaming since it's so heavy. I've got the RG351P but it's too small for me personally. :/
Maybe the Retroid Pocket 3+ would be a nice slightly larger upgrade over the RG351P?
@@RetroGameCorps Seems like it's completely sold out on their website. :/ But I appreciate your recommendation. The 4 Pro unfortunately is way out of budget.
I'd get the either the PowKiddy RGB30 or the Anbernic ARC. I have both, and both are excellent. The ARC has a really nice hand feel, decent screen and excellent controls. However, the 1:1 screen on the RGB30 is perfect for stuff like the GameBoy and similar handhelds.
I bought the original and I use it to play some ps1 and mostly gba/gbc games and I absolutely love it
How do I get my hands on the custom chip you just used
Hey great info.
That SP looks pretty cool, I'll probably wait and see how that one turns out instead.
There's only one handheld left for me. A flip that could emulate up to DC
Got the Miyoo and upgraded to the RG35 but I think it sucks?? So hard to understand.
No longer content with making their handhelds obsolete by releasing a new version a few months later, Anbernic are now making them obsolete from day one.
I think Anbernic needs to make a budget handheld with a bigger screen ngl
Something like the RP4 would be nice
I got the 2024 model for $35 so cant really complain. Also didnt really know anything about these emulation devices. Just happy I can easily play old GBA and SNES games.
I don't know what I did to deserve popcorn today instead of a regular snack, but it's welcome.
It seems like Anbernic release a new handheld every month and only 1 or 2 of these are decent. Surely they must be making profit on the other 10 duds but i don't understand how.
I can't get the mame version of batman to load????
Got a 35xx-H 2 weeks ago during the Aliexpress sale for $46 all together...I'm good not needing this 2024 model
Can we settle what is better RG35XX H or RB30? Horizontal Wars indeed
I can say why they made it, there warehouse of old SOC's ran out and they need to keep selling RG35xx's
Great video. I've had my RG35XXH for about 2 weeks now. Definitely feel like it's the definitive version of this range. Managed to get mine for £41 from TikTok shop. That's almost £30 cheaper than other places at the time.
Definitely Pointless on the 2024. The RG35XX Plus and H. Are good👍🏼
Mine says on the sticker barcode thing 35xx+ so is that a scam
The boot time for batocera v40 on my RG35XX Plus is exactly 45secs. with a full-blown 128GB single sd card solution. I don't know how to achive 20secs., though...
Am I trippin or is the new RG35xx 2024 a lighter gray than the original and plus?
So...keep my original 35xx? 😅
if i buy this can i take out the sd card and use the emulators on it for a plug n play option on my pc or lenovo go?
Can you save your game so that the original game itself saves your state, like gamme boy would for example, or do emulators save it instead?
healthy, when I buy this console, I immediately have all the games or do I have to get them through cracking or pirated programs
35XX plus also has 2 speaker inputs but they only used 1 of it
Got the new 2024 version on sale for 25$, I think that answers the question of WHY
Im still rocking my RG351MP. I bought the Miyoo Mini Plus but ended up gifting it to my little cousin. Been thinking about a micro handheld to replace my MP (which is heavier and less pocketable). Ive been considering the OG miyoo mini (v4) but I may hold until these small clamshell designs come out.
My next ANBERNIC would be the Arc-D, I want a larger display and a set of front facing stereo speakers. Then I would get the ANBERNIc Flip.
Good choices. If you want to save some money (and you like the colour options) the Arc-S is a good choice. I have the Arc-D, but never use the Android OS.
@@martinh4982 Ordered an Arc-D yesterday! I I plan to install two 1TB micro sd cards in mine.
Please do a review of everything that looks like a purple transparent gameboy colour! My brother had one, I need to know what to get for his birthday
