I am so happy the producers never quit It is my favourite series of all time and each story is better than the last.
If I had to say one thing about this video, is that it's a perfect love letter to the series. This is beautiful. I watched it through from the start and this was a wonderful journey.
@@jfarnsworth2869 both Pokemon and Fire Emblem are third party, so you have to count Pokemon in there if you're going to refer to fe as a Nintendo series, since they're both exclusive to Nintendo consoles, excluding mobile games. And yeah, fe blew up recently due to Awakening and Fates bringing in a large amount of new fans, but Kirby, Mario, Metroid, Zelda, Smash Pokemon and arguably Animal Crossing are all more popular
i've occasionally heard some people make the misconception that the weapon triangle is what Fire Emblem strategic gameplay is all about. this is of course not the case. the weapon triangle merely confers minor bonuses, mainly to accuracy and evasion. while this is a nice bonus to have it often isn't game changing. Fire Emblem strategic gameplay is more about how you position your characters as you move them around the map. if your strategy is good then most of the time it won't really matter if you have this bonus.
Fe3h seems to have been slightly controversial among purists, bc it's definitely the easiest FE game I've played. But God DAMN, the story is so good that it's become my favorite game in the series.
@@harrylane4 any FE game after awakening is "controversial" to some veterans. Thus the running joke we have that no one hates fire emblem more than fire emblem fans

@@harrylane4 no. Certainly not the easiest on maddening. The easiest is like sacred stones. I assume u haven't played many fe's and tbh it's actually the least controversial Fe game since awakening. It was a really good documentary! I love FE and its history, and feel like FE is still underrated, but the fans keep arguing over a difficulty mode, instead of trying to stay united and to promote both old and new games. That’s sad 😔
@@Caligula1488 after watching this video, I am considering picking up a Fire Emblem game, most likely Awakening, Fates, Shadows of Valencia, and Three Houses since I have a New 3DS XL and a Switch.
Fire Emblem: A series where even after it was passed onto a new generation of developers, managed to both remain the same, and evolve in many different ways. Halo: A series that was goddamn beautiful, until it was passed onto a new company, and nearly ruined beyond repair...
Echoes was actually my very first on-hand introduction to Fire Emblem! I feel so terrible for missing out on such a magnificent series that my older brother tried to get me into when I was younger, with the gb advanced game, but now I want to immerse myself even deeper thanks to Echoes! Fire Emblem is everything I've always wanted from games, and is everything I dreamed of making as a game maker! Thanks so much for this marvelous walk through the series :)
This video is great, I really respect all the work u put into it. I've never actually played a fire emblem game on a console but I have the mobile game. It's cool to hear the history of this series.
The Console killed Radiant Down; Wii U was no unapalleaing that even having Radiant Down and Tokyo Mirage Sessions I wouldn.t buy it even if I hahe the chance (unless a very good bargain). The Nintendo 3DS was a comercial success but the Wii U. i felt it kinda meh.
@@AlexanderLingg That would be No you CANT do that The map design in awakening suffered as an indirect consequence of casual mode Conquest did not have this though which is nice
This is extremely helpful to a newcomer like I. I’ve played Awakening, half of Blazing Sword, and a little bit of Heroes, but I really wanted to understand the history of the series before getting into Three Houses. What I didn’t expect was to learn how most of the series is available to the West thanks to remakes. I had no clue Echoes is a remake of Gaiden, and the whole Shadow Dragon+Emblem/New Emblem was as confusing as it gets. The games seem much more accessible now, and I can now decide how I want to experience each story.
Thank you for your hard working guys! It’s an amazing video by every aspect! Hell, even the advertisement is placed with such a care and preciseness, that instead of being a usual annoyance it makes the storytelling even more intricate!!! If I could give you all likes in the world I would do that without hesitation!
1:21:33 This right here is my only genuine fear for the FE series. Not saying I'm against hot people in FE. We've had that all throughout the series. But making it a primary game focus is just wrong imo. Also, kinda funny how much the developers mirrored the fanbase sometimes through the series.
@@sloppyjoe9070 I may have conveyed that a little badly but the point wasn't how good the characters looked. It was more about pushing that and general fanservice to the forefront. Stuff like introducing a character via panty shot does your war story and said character a disservice.
Nope, that was part 1 of this documentary, that would equal around of 1 hour and 25 minutes of this video. Part 2 officially begins when he starts talking about Fire Emblem Fates.
I've been watching a lot of FE videos on youtube lately because of FE: Three Houses coming out soon. I just wanted to say thank you so much for making this. FE is probably one of my top 3 favorite games. Watching this video brought back so many memories. It was so heartwarming, watching this video, and reliving the stories and memories I've made through this game series, while also learning about how hard the developers worked to keep one of my favorite series alive. Literally brought tears to my eyes. Thank you!
Beautiful work. I was actually amazed by how far you were willing to dig deep into the franchise. and not just the story but also the productions and marketing.
Man i really admire my patience with this 2 hours video, and i admire the patience of Lockstyn showing us the fuuuuull story, Man i wanna play Fire emblems they really didn't give up! So much Faith and beautiful Story
The internal struggles surrounding Intelligence System during the Ike games is unfortunate, because Path of Radiance was a masterpiece. Radiant Dawn was also an ambitous but flawed endever and switching consoles probably played a role in its many problems. I am happy to see that Three Houses will have a nod to Path of Radiance by making the main character the son of a mercenary. Fingers crossed there aren't any mischievous black clad knights lurking around in the woods... or a house.
I'm fine with that marriage system and all, but I don't think it's necessary to put it every single game. Echoes went without it and as a result we got characters that are (in my opinion) a lot stronger than the previous two game's characters. Their writers didn't have to accommodate for some ridiculous pairing feature and were allowed to make them how you would any character in normal circumstances. Here's to Echoes and its class a characters. I hope they continue this into their next games.
King Young mine opinion they are one note characters the support system didn't really add anything to them maybe Genny and soina, and Luckas supports we're good and maybe Greys but most of them were meh.
Micahl Taylor I can see where you're coming from, but I believe their goal was to create dialogue akin to real conversations over the over the top back and forths seen in the supports of most other titles. Yes, some of them were a bit dull, but I found the characters to be a bit more believable as a result. But I agree they could definitely use work, maybe bring out the quirky side of their personalities a bit more (a la Awakening), it is fantasy after all. And a few more of them wouldn't hurt either. But I think they've got a budding formula on their hands there, in fact I think Grey and Clair's supports might just be the most realistic and genuine growing relationship I've ever seen in Fire Emblem ever. I would definitely like to avoid the abhorrent slogs of dialogue that were Fates supports at all costs.
TheBigX That would be Awakening. But I liked the game so much that I just had to see what else the series had to offer. Nowadays I've played nearly all of them save Thracia and Radiant Dawn. (I've pretty much become addicted to the series)
King Young You sound cool.... I've played all the games in the franchise and I started with Sacred Stones. I wish more new fans were less casual and dating sim maniacs like you. I really I hope the marriage system isn't in fe switch because to be honest, I might cry.
This is one of the best videos I’ve watched on UA-cam. I’ve been getting into Fire Emblem recently after Heroes and a friend letting me borrow Awakening so this was really cool to watch!
I am not to afraid to say I actually like casual mode. For me its too stressful to play with permadeath on, it doesn't stop me from trying to keep all my units alive. But I like the story aspect and you lose that when you lose units.
This is retrospective is one of the most impressive videos about gaming i ever saw. I would love your take on Xeno series from Monolith soft. Thank you very much for this awesome content. Subscribed for life :)
Path of radiance and, especially, radiant dawn, were such unappreciated beauties that were in my opinion badly received mostly because of a trick of fate (with radiant dawn's translation mistake and all). That makes me so sad
When you get more fire Emblem games in a year than Metroid in the last half decade... ( Metroid is only getting it's first main series game in the last five years next week)
Just wanted to say thank you. This documentary was absolutely fantastic. I've been a fan since path of Radiance on the GC and knew of the history of Japan only titles, but to see it all come together in this excellent film was wonderful. Once again a huge thank you and congratulations for the sheer scope of the project. Considering half its lifespan was never even released in the West it makes the levels of research you guys do all the more impressive. Bravo!!
Guys.. Thank you for making all of this... this furthered increased my bond with this series. I REALLY LOVE THIS FRANCHISE and hopes to share it to future generations.. I feel like crying man...
Only seeing them all here, did I realize just how many I actually played growing up. What an amazing franchise. Underrated for sure. I’m like 90 hours into FE3H at this point haha
I watched it twice. Thank You. I am a player from the NES era. As a near 50 of age gamer, your long FE video bring back a lot of good memory. I truly hope they can make a remaster version for each title, even at a high price.
Sat through the entire thing, not even realizing it. Having played the franchise for 13 years and having gone back and played the games of ol', this video was definitely something I could sit down and enjoy. Great job on the presentation and script.
I started with fates (love love loved it), went on with Awakening, Shadows of Valentia and finally three houses. I never found the appeal to FE until Fates
Odinsravenhugin This video just added new parts to an existing series of videos. They put em all together , which is why there are some wonky transitions.
Personally I am a really big fan of the ability to turn back time in Echos and Three houses, it allows you to slightly change your strategy if you mess up (and in three houses it can’t be abused since you can only use it 3 times, it’s been too long since I’ve played echos to remember how it works in that game) Instead of having to completely restart a mission you could just retry the previous turn or so to try an save your units.
This was insanely well done, this should be on discovery channel or netflix or SOMETHING because I wanted more when it finally ended and it was alnost as long as 2 cinema films. You can't hear it but I'm applauding for you sir
The elitist in this comment section are depressing, it’s like y’all would rather see the series die and be forgotten then just add a more forgiving mode that you don’t have to play and expect the fact waifus sell easily and was a safe way to keep the franchise afloat
It’s really contrived. Like they make it sound like classic is the only way to enjoy the game. If you play anything other than classic than you’re not a true fan.
Crawford Graham I'd honestly have different scales. One for Story, Gameplay and whatever else I could think about. Story-wise I mostly have older games on top while gameplay-wise I sometimes think Conquest is on top but sometimes I just prefer the older gameplay. Like you said it all depends on who you ask, heck some haven't played all of them (be it some haven't played the old ones or some haven't played the new ones) making people a bit more divided. If ya ask me everyone should really try every FE they can.
Man, I just have reached 1 hour and 20 minutes of video, and I already have liked your game, the amount of research and effort to summarize this franchise history; especially being my own most favorite among all.

As someone who never played Geneology, I think that being the next Echoes not only makes the most sense (both chronologically and in concept) but could really excel given how close it looks to modern FE already but with what looks like a better handling of time passing and children then we've experienced recently.
I am so happy the producers never quit It is my favourite series of all time and each story is better than the last.
If I had to say one thing about this video, is that it's a perfect love letter to the series. This is beautiful. I watched it through from the start and this was a wonderful journey.
Thank you for this Video .
Fire Emblem is the most underrated Nintendo franchise.
Not really, it's prob the 3rd biggest franchise nintendo has. Pokemon is not nintendo
My favourite franchise

Exactly i have no clue while people always mention the weapon triangle like its such a huge mechanic
It was in the older games, the bonuses on accuracy were pretty huge
Really well done. As someone that’s new to the franchise, having the history and order explained so thoroughly is immensely helpful.
Back after 80 hours into Three Houses.
Needs an update for Three Houses really bad.
It's my goty 2019. I adore FE more than ever now.
Fe3h seems to have been slightly controversial among purists, bc it's definitely the easiest FE game I've played. But God DAMN, the story is so good that it's become my favorite game in the series.
@@harrylane4 maddening mode can be pretty brutal if u aren't prepared
@@harrylane4 any FE game after awakening is "controversial" to some veterans. Thus the running joke we have that no one hates fire emblem more than fire emblem fans
Harrison Lane Which FEs have you played? I’d guess not many, due to there being several other easy games, but maybe you had wildly different experiences than me.
@@harrylane4 no. Certainly not the easiest on maddening. The easiest is like sacred stones. I assume u haven't played many fe's and tbh it's actually the least controversial Fe game since awakening. Also if u liked the story u should play genealogy. Has the best story in fire emblem and a large chunk of 3 houses is inspired by it
It was a really good documentary! I love FE and its history, and feel like FE is still underrated, but the fans keep arguing over a difficulty mode, instead of trying to stay united and to promote both old and new games. That’s sad 😔
I just watched a 2 and half hour long video form Lockstin about a series I’ve never played a single game from.
And I do not regret it at all.
play it, most are great games.

I was just in the middle of the video...thinking of how long the video is. And checked it...
*TWO HOURS?!?!?* :O
Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, so good games, so small recognition :(
My personal favorites. Ike is my favorite Fire Emblem character.
It would help if the games didn't cost my entire morgage
The Console killed Radiant Down; Wii U was no unapalleaing that even having Radiant Down and Tokyo Mirage Sessions I wouldn.t buy it even if I hahe the chance (unless a very good bargain).

Here's a radical take on casual mode: If you think it defeats the purpose of the game...
...don't play casual mode.
Letting others enjoy the game the way THEY want while still giving me the chance to enjoy it my own way? Unacceptable!
The game design changes because of it
Awakening is a prime example
Most maps are designed with casual in mind first
Classic second
@@jonathann.5754 You make it sound like it's illegal

That would be
No you CANT do that
The map design in awakening suffered as an indirect consequence of casual mode

This is extremely helpful to a newcomer like I. I’ve played Awakening, half of Blazing Sword, and a little bit of Heroes, but I really wanted to understand the history of the series before getting into Three Houses.
What I didn’t expect was to learn how most of the series is available to the West thanks to remakes. I had no clue Echoes is a remake of Gaiden, and the whole Shadow Dragon+Emblem/New Emblem was as confusing as it gets. The games seem much more accessible now, and I can now decide how I want to experience each story.
The story of this franchise truly resembles the medieval epic style it's set into for most of the games.
Whenever he kept saying “the man behind it all” I started chanting out loud SHOZO KAGA SHOZO KAGA SHOZO KAGA
"Celcia"
/dies/
Thought I'd look to the comments to see if anyone else picked that up. Didn't take long, lol.
InfinityAlex Well, she does use fire magic, so the temperature in Celcius could be high. :P

Also "Epharim" iirc
Yeah, sounds about right
I love the minimalistic aspect of Lyn's story :(
This is pretty helpful, considering I know nothing about Fire Emblem.
I’m new to the Fire Emblem series and this was really useful. Thank you
Thank you for your hard working guys!
Idk I tend to prefer games with hot characters 😂 male or female
@@sloppyjoe9070 I may have conveyed that a little badly but the point wasn't how good the characters looked. It was more about pushing that and general fanservice to the forefront.
Stuff like introducing a character via panty shot does your war story and said character a disservice.
Hasn't lockstin already made a video about the entire history of fire emblem or am I tripping balls?
Deju vu?
Nope, that was part 1 of this documentary, that would equal around of 1 hour and 25 minutes of this video. Part 2 officially begins when he starts talking about Fire Emblem Fates.
Oh, problem is that I never went to "Chronicles" channel so I never knew but thanks for the info!.
Valentia in Echoes was so fleshed-out, it seems hard to know everything about it
Man i really admire my patience with this 2 hours video, and i admire the patience of Lockstyn showing us the fuuuuull story, Man i wanna play Fire emblems they really didn't give up!
Fingers crossed there aren't any mischievous black clad knights lurking around in the woods... or a house.
Well to be fair fire emblem protagonist having dead dad is almost as common as final boss being or related to a dragon in 1 way or another.
King Young Question... Which fe game did you start with?
Cannot stop playing Three Houses. I’m officially obsessed.
I am not to afraid to say I actually like casual mode. For me its too stressful to play with permadeath on, it doesn't stop me from trying to keep all my units alive. But I like the story aspect and you lose that when you lose units.
also, you don't have to play casual if you don't want to. Like I don't see the big deal.
The big deal is that people are now able to turn off the feature that used to make Fire Emblem unique, I find that really sad and a bit offensive.
Considering that they did it because they thought that an international audience couldn't handle it
Mikan Pow It's an option. If you don't want to play with it the you don't have to. Never a bad idea to give players more options.
Did you read what I said? I could reply to you in the same exact way
This is retrospective is one of the most impressive videos about gaming i ever saw. I would love your take on Xeno series from Monolith soft. Thank you very much for this awesome content. Subscribed for life :)
So happy to see that the fire emblem flame is still being strongly held with three houses
The amount of thoughts and effort you put into this video is incredible! Mad props to you!!
I never comment on UA-cam videos. But this is seriously a work of art. Very well done. So much great information.
My favourite game is still Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
lol mine too
TheRavenPirate I prefer Path of Radiance. I hated how in Radiant Dawn, Sothe and Michaia's team became weak to the point they were useless.
Path of radiance and, especially, radiant dawn, were such unappreciated beauties that were in my opinion badly received mostly because of a trick of fate (with radiant dawn's translation mistake and all). That makes me so sad
My personal favorite is FE7, probably since that is the first one i played. Currently playing Shadow Dragon. Can't wait to get my hands on Echoes too.
My fave is Sword of Seals
Nice work Lockstin amazing documentary on the fire emblem series. I actually watched the full 2.5 hour video.

( Metroid is only getting it's first main series game in the last five years next week)
Josiah Araki SAMUS RETURNS ALREADY? I wasn't paying attention.
Why do I cry?
Because god hates you
Because there won't be FEs like path of radiance and radiant dawn anymore
HoneyOTU why would he cry about that
Because the games wont be like the gba and wii games
I cried too, at awakening mostly
I watched it twice. Thank You. I am a player from the NES era. As a near 50 of age gamer, your long FE video bring back a lot of good memory. I truly hope they can make a remaster version for each title, even at a high price.
This is a fantastic video history that has made the wait for Three Houses all the more difficult.

I appreciate all the work that's gone into this! I learned a lot about the creation story of one of my favorite franchises.
maybe part of the reason path of radiance didn't sell well in japan is cause it was on the gamecube...
about 40 mins in and there seems to be alot of strange editing/sound cuts.
Odinsravenhugin This video just added new parts to an existing series of videos. They put em all together , which is why there are some wonky transitions.
Personally I am a really big fan of the ability to turn back time in Echos and Three houses, it allows you to slightly change your strategy if you mess up (and in three houses it can’t be abused since you can only use it 3 times, it’s been too long since I’ve played echos to remember how it works in that game)
Instead of having to completely restart a mission you could just retry the previous turn or so to try an save your units.
Really fantastic video! The 2.5 hour timestamp was intimidating at first, but it really flew by once it got started
It's best to ignore them. Keeps you sane.
Plus Fire Emblem has always had waifus
