I remember watching it as a kid and enjoying it. The alien part was scary. 😅 Then I grow up and find out people hated it. I don't know why. But it's the same way with A.I. loved that movie as a kid. Turns out people hate it. I rewatched it as an adult and still enjoyed it.

I'll never forget in the packed theater, the collective gasp from everybody when the birthday party footage of the alien walking past the alleyway. That was a good time
I was 10 when this movie hit theaters and I am brazilian. Went with my parents to watch it. Seeing that fucking alien in Brazil almost made me shit my pants in the middle of the theater. All those kids talking in Portuguese on the tape (even the accent matched for the region they claimed the tape to be from), the car on the background was exactly like the cars we had here at the time... if it impressed adults, imagine some 10yr old kid. For a couple of months, I was terrified to look outside my second flor window facing an empty field, just expecting an alien to show up. It took my parents some time to convince me this shit wasn't real.
That scene marked my childhood like no other.
That scene made me scream in the theater.
I gasped watching it n my laptop lol
The claw scene under the door made my mom pee herself and have to tap out.

I saw this in theaters when it came out in 2002. I distinctly remember the crickets ceasing their chirping. I'm from the Midwest and used to live on a farm. When the crickets stop, something or someone is out there, moving. Surprised more people didn't catch that!!!
🤔 Only thing us city folks'll notice or be creeped out about is if all cars suddenly stop honking and sirens stop blaring. The sounds of crickets are negligible. 🤗

I too am from the Midwest and I can remember this scene -- every hair on my body stood up and I didn't want to breath. I use to live next to a crop field and for a long time I HATED looking outside after dark

Legit got chills from that line, Gibson is incredible in this film.
I like that line because as someone who is non religious it is true but just a god or gods isnt there, that doesnt mean that there arent family and friends there to back you up. So we're not alone in that sense

Surprised that no one mentioned that that the title "Signs" are representing the crop circles, but also that these events are "signs" from God to try to pull Mel Gibson's character back to faith.

Someone in a different video pointed out that the G in Signs looks like the outline of a glass and simple depiction of an inhaler. The glass for Bo and the inhaler for Morgan and the more i look at it, I see it.

This is honestly one of the creepiest, most disturbing movies I have ever seen. Disturbing and frightening yet, beautiful. Such a great film.
You should check out Spooky Rice, he covers some way more disturbing movies, this movie is definitely one of the most unsettling movies I’ve ever seen though, and definitely frightening and beautiful 🤘

I swear I noticed it just yesterday
This movie is a masterpiece and your review gives it justice. I loved literally everything about Signs: the story, the settings (rural USA), the music, the actors, the new and interesting take on alien invasion, the Faith element etc. I'm from France but this movie encompasses almost everything I love about the US. The film also left a strong impression on me and influenced a lot the way I approach movies these days so I can totally relate to what you were saying in your review. One thing which deserved more attention though in my opinion is the soundtrack by James Newton Howard. It contributes a lot to the overall ambiance of the movie.
Especially remarkable was that 9 minutes sequence at the end when the alien grabs Morgan. It's called "Hand of Fate" and it takes you through a whole prism of emotion in a non-stop sequence...absolutely brilliant, beautifully done.

The expositive dialogue of the Brazilian child speaking in English "It's behind!" was something really messed up about this scene. No Brazilian child speaks english out of nothing like that, It was only for the American viewer to understand that something was about to appear at that moment.
Matheus It never seemed to be a necessary or useful addition to the scene.
Now think about this: I'm from a city neighbor to Passo Fundo (Carazinho - RS, about 40 minutes by car). When it came out, there was a lot of talk in the local news about it being mentioned in the movie. I was 8 at the time, and there was a lot of recess stories about the video being actually true. About ten years ago there was even UFO sightings in Carazinho!
Right now I'm living in Passo Fundo. Sadly, no aliens around here :D
The figure on the roof did not make me "curious" it made me shit myself I was like 12 years old when watching this.
I noped out right after the alien footage part happened.

Merrill mentioned that the aliens can change the color of their skin to their surroundings. When the alien is holding Morgan, you can see his arm is blending in with the flannel pattern on Morgan’s shirt. Small details like this are what make this film incredible. Never noticed this till your freeze frame at 19:46
That and also when the alien hand grabs Morgan by the coal chute
You can see Morgan’s screaming face imprinted on the aliens back right as it turns before Merrill swings at it the first time.

I agree. I really enjoyed this film immensely. I know people talk about the H2O Phobic Aliens but I see this film for what It boils down to. FATE.
EVERYTHING that happened to Mel Gibsons Character (Including his wife being killed, Merels Brush with Fame playing Minor League Baseball and almost going Major, and his Daughters weird H2O contamination worry, His sons ASTHMA ) all led up to the final confrontation with the Alien at the end where ALL of those Signs he experienced in his life all came to a head IN HIS FAVOR. Its one of my Favorite Shamalan movies.

You missed one thing in the religious symbolism -- all the glasses were in groups of threes. "Holy water". The "Holy Trinity".

@Knavire Hahaha I guess. I know most people rate someone on "what have you done for me lately" but I tend to rate people on the legacy of their peak achievement. Ridley Scott greatly disappointed me with Prometheus but to me he remains the genius behind Alien. David Bowie created a lot of music I couldn't relate to but some of the greatest music I know came from him. Same with Elton John, Billy Joel, and many others. Shyamalan created some really outstanding movies like this one and its in me to regard someone as great based on their best achievements. I hope people will regard me that way as well.

Sean Johnson I don't recall Hitchcock having any speaking lines in ANY of his movies. Shyamalan has at least a few lines in his movies. In this one, he's a pretty major character.

Great analysis. I'm not religious at all, but I've always loved Signs. And to everyone complaining about aliens lacking technology to break through doors, or travelling to a planet filled with water, you're missing the point. Who cares? The movie isn't about those things. We're not supposed to have those answers. The movie is about the family and the priest's relationship with God. It's a beautifully acted, directed, and written movie. 10/10.

I don't think those things constitute as plot holes since they don't actually contradict anything in the continuity of the plot. The reason why the "aliens", (and I use that term loosely because it's not even established whether the beings are aliens or demons), don't use their technology is actually explained in the book Morgan buys at the store. If the aliens used their technology we would retaliate with nukes and likely destroy whatever they came here to get. Morgan's book specifies that the aliens would use hand to hand combat. You might think that's stupid or whatever, and that's your choice, but it's not a plot hole. Everything is consistent with the continuity of the movie.

I agree. It’s a tale about losing one’s faith; faith in the world, faith in mankind, faith in god-Doesn’t matter; viewers choice. When faith is lost so is hope. But the film offers the possibility of a redemption from that loss and a return of hope. This is really the only film by M. Night that works for me.
They're demons, not aliens. It's just pathetically obvious.
It’s also interesting if you consider the entities to be demonic, rather than extraterrestrial in nature. Bo, potentially like her mother, has some sort of divine nature (prophetic foresight and such) that could have allowed for the water to actually be cleansed and considered to be holy water (as she was called an “angel”), which is why the entities (demons) were actually negatively affected by it. Additionally, this idea also made me think more about why the entities wanted to come to harvest the humans, much like demons want to, in a sense, harvest the souls of humanity. The “primitive method” the humans found to defeat the demons was just the power of God, ultimately.
Regardless of the reality of what was intended, the film is amazing.
The real question here is it coincidence or fate that 90% of Mel Gibson movies his wife is dead?

I don't know about 90, but you might be onto something: Signs, Braveheart, The Patriot, Road Warrior, Lethal Weapon. Then again, it's a popular theme for heroes.

I think different people see different things in the same movie. Both reviews do a good job of explaining those conflicting opinions in different ways.

I haven't seen the movie, but I disagree with Chris on the pantry door argument. It's kind of silly of Gibson's character to say that the aliens have trouble with pantry doors, regardless of whether the alien broke out, and use that as the rationale to board up the doors. And that does seem inconsistent with the aliens being so technologically advanced. You could argue that maybe the aliens aren't used to materials like wood, but I think that's still a plot hole.
But I like what Chris explained about Gibson saying they should call the doctor to treat their dog. While it's kind of odd writing to have the dog go to a human doctor, it's very clever indeed that he is not taken to the vet because that's the man who killed Gibson's wife.

Even now, I'm not a big fan of horror films, but when I was younger I was forced by my older sister to watch Signs. All I was told was "yes, it's scary." I was 7 when it came out so I would probably guess the first time I watched it on DVD was at the age of 10. This film blew me away. It taught me that a scary film doesn't have to be bloody, filled with jump scares, or murder shown on screen. It showed me what a psychological thriller was. To this day, I marvel at writers and directors that can make a film that you need to see completely through before being able to figure it out and put all the pieces together. My sister thinks the movie is just fine, but thanks to her, the way I look at movies and film making changed completely. I love Signs and I thank you Chris for making this video.

That's cool man. Signs was the first horror movie I ever saw in theaters when I was about 10. And that's also because my older sister dragged me to see it. I never wanted to watch scary stuff before that but this movie changed all that for me.

The one part that always freaked me out and gave me chills was the part where they are finishing up boarding up the windows in the house and Mel Gibson comes up to his bedroom window at 25:43 after the dinner scene and it doesn’t show what he’s looking at outside of the window, but it shows his facial reaction and the music starts getting suspenseful. Now that really made me curious as to what he saw and it freaked me out because it was your own imagination of what he sees and it made it that much scarier.
When the daylight comes and it pans over the field, you can see in the top right a hint of what he saw. The lines in the crops from where the aliens were rushing the house
I only noticed this last night for the first time and you're right, the rest of the movie I wondered what the hell he saw, couldn't stop thinking about it. I've seen this film like ten times too, but it's what we DON'T see that scares us.

The idea of them attacking a planet which is 75% water is like us attacking a planet which is 75% ammonia. It wouldnt be fun for us, thats for sure
blairkilszombies Yeah..but we know ammonia. And surely there is a LOT of elements and "stuff" that we don't know in the universe (universe that we don't know almost nothing about it. In fact, we barely know our own planet). Another thing: why we ALWAYS think that any kind of alien race is much more advanced than us? I mean, they obvious have a much more advanced technology, but thats it. Humanity is also travelling through the space. Maybe this alien race was just exploring. Maybe they don't have "drones" or something to scout the planets before they arrive on it. Or maybe they think they are so ahead from another race, that they just don't care enough to study our planet before invading it. And they probally had never seen water. Water isn't like..lava. We don't touch lava, cause its fucking hot and melting everything. But water is everywhere. We drink it, we bath us on it. Maybe they didn't find that water could be "toxic" for them.

Yes, there are differences, but they are more similar than you would think.
Also, Water (H2O) is the second most common molecule in the galaxy (the first being hydrogen gas, or H2) as its the combination of the first and third most common elements in the galaxy (the second most being Helium, but thats almost totally unreactive). This isnt wild speculation, its a fact. If you could travel the galaxy and invade a PLANET, but not know about the SECOND MOST COMMON MOLECULE IN THE GALAXY, then that makes no sense. The only explanation I could think of is that the aliens have an embargo on Chemistry and Cosmology, which makes even less sense for a species that has mastered space flight.

Well, you have more knowledge than me and I agree with you on everything you said, but, i still believe in the possibility that maybe water isn't common in their "region", like some unknown molecule or element for us might be common on theirs, I don't know. You surely can explain better if this is possible or not. Besides, the alien invasion isn't the main thing on the movie. Still, it is an interesting discution.
One additional point that always struck me about this film: The cornfields. It’s as though the cornfields are an entity in and of themselves. A presence which lurks in the background, threatening, intimating, and concealing a hidden menace.
I loved the part where Mel is looking out the window during the attack and he backs away. They didn't show what he was seeing. Left it to out imagination.

K And And that dialogue in the middle of the film, between Gibson and Phoenix, about how different people (who have faith, vs who have not) would interpret the end of the world (with hope and meaning, vs with terror and meaninglessness) is also the key to undertstanding this movie, anf what it depicts.

Excellent, detailed review! I saw this movie when it first came out, too, and went back to the theaters and saw it a few times. I have watched it many times over the years on DVD. I love the message that it imparts regarding coincidences, luck, and faith. It’s one of my most favorite movies.

I can't help but point out, if you look closely at the hand of the alien trapped in the pantry it's covered in red blotches. This could be damage the alien was taking from water in the air. Another reason they likely left so quickly.
I always thought it was their camouflage and it was blending into the brick floor.

The aliens have camouflage their skin tries to imitate whatever is directly in front and behind them you can see the families faces appear on them at certain parts
I'm 22 now, but when I was a kid I discovered this movie in my house, and watched it at 11pm and it scared the fuck out of me, honestly I through out the VHS cause I was that terrified, but later realised it's a fucking brilliant film once I matured

Have you noticed that when Morgan asks for a book on aliens , the librarian says “ I think we have one came in by mistake from shipping and decided to keep it for the city people” I think that may be a sign.

Thank you for this. I've never understood why people are so harsh with this movie...people forgive so much "popcorn logic" in far cheesier films. This had beautiful cinematography, brilliant pacing and tension, and very human, relatable characters. Sometimes I think we just get off on our own cynicism...

I never knew this film was hated. Anyone I've spoken to about it absolutely love this. I had a biology teacher who would put this on during the rare occasions we had a free period. She would apologise and tell us it was the only film she had in class as it was her favourite, but everyone in the class seemed to like it so nobody complained.

I first saw this movie when I was 9 and still love it to this day! So another theory that was brought up to me when I was a kid was that it wasn’t his wife talking to him (because she was technically already gone) but God who was talking through her that’s why she said “tell Graham to see” even though he was standing right in front of her…or it could of just been the shock from the accident… don’t know if anyone else has brought this up or not. Still one of my favorites😌!

Ivo Tiago I think it's because they can't grasp different concepts. All the complaining about the water in particular I find mind boggling. It was such a brilliant idea. I had the exact same explanation to the complaining as Chris did being that the aliens probably had a different planet made up of completely different elements foreign to us, but to them, the water was foreign and turned out to be a corrosive substance on their skin. The universe is endless and full of possibilities. I'm sure if we were capable of galactic travel, we would encounter new elements that are extremely dangerous to us.
+OopsRuMad That's a bit of a stretch. These aliens are obviously extremely intelligent. Enough to create ships that we can assume travel close to light speed and can turn invisible. That being said, according to our knowledge of science, water/hydrogen are extremely common throughout the universe and is found constantly on other planets, usually in ice form.
***** And to our knowledge, we can't even see a fraction of a single percent of the universe. So it's hardly a stretch. We can't even fully understand the basic fundamentals of the universe. Each new major discovery brings something new to the table. For instance, the discovery of planet HD 106109b which is teaching us that we don't even know the basics of planet formation since to our science, it shouldn't exist in its current location.
Additionally, we know absolutely nothing about these aliens. We don't know their goal, why they came, what happened to them, etc. Perhaps their planet became uninhabitable and they've been living on their ships for generations scavenging for resources and trying to find a suitable planet to repopulate on. We do know that their ships can camouflage but we don't know how fast they can travel. I will at least give you that I thought it was odd that they had ships that could camouflage but not body armor and weaponry with the same technology.

Even though I don't think it's a great movie or even MNS' best movie (I think Unbreakable is the best) I am always willing to watch it again if I see that it's playing on cable and I'm never bored with it. There is just something about it that is fascinating.

After watching the nostalgia critic tear apart this movie and saying everyone who liked this movie does not know any better, seeing this analyzed review was so satisfying. Chris got almost everything right and disproved so much of what the Nostalgia critic thought as being terrible. Especially the pantry door argument, which now makes no sense.
I appreciate your review of the movie "Signs". The "no poison got into his lungs" scene with Mel Gidson's character holding his son and regaining his faith was so amazing. The way it was constructed, the music, how the camera focuses on the characters' faces always draws strong emotions from me. I see why this inspired you to do films. I know this posting is a few years old. But I was thinking about the alien in the pantry scene. M. Night's character said he had "locked one in his pantry". I've seen this film many times over the years. But this is the first time I picked up him saying he had locked the creature in the pantry. Explaining why the alien didn't get out right away. It's weird what we remember and what we forget. Great movie and really has that Hitchcock feel to it in terms of suspense. Thanks.

That should happen. Both have very great points on their opposite opinions. I'm kinda torn on whether or not this film is good or bad. It's a film I should've found boring as a kid, but was intrigued by for some reason. I never understood why, but as a kid, I enjoyed it. Ever since I saw Nostalgia Critic's review, I have to agree with a lot of his jokes and points of view of it not being well made or thought out. But now this video is making me rethink how well made the film is. I really would like to see opposite minds clashing with each other on this film because I'm actually pretty torn now.
+Isaiah Williams I get both sides too but every time I watch the movie, I get captivated and always get into the suspense of the movie. I care about the characters so to me I have to say it is a good movie.
I think stuckmann would win. He is a film buff, and whether or not he is right, you cannot challenge him on his opinion, and you may even think he is right.
The suspense, primarily through music and sound, was amazing. I was scared during the title sequence with the loud music for every name. And I love the characters. Not mentioned so far that I’ve seen, is Cherry Jones as the sheriff. The way she tells Mel Gibson‘s character that his wife was struck and doesn’t have long to live brings me tears every time.
This movie truly isn't about an alien invasion. It's about a man returning to his faith (as Stuckmann said) and family regaining its composure after a devastating loss (the children are very emotionless and "void" for a reason). The invasion is just the means to this end. The film is positioning for the fact that life has purpose, that God is watching out for us, and that a Divine hand is over us. Without being preachy, this movie has a fairly strong faith-based message.
Colleen's prophetic last words, Bo's water problem, Merrill's constant swinging that got him released from the minor league, Morgan's asthma, and finally: Graham's ability to "see" and connect all these things and realize God wove them together for a purpose.
I'll be frank with you, the past decade or so of Christian films have been utter crap for the most part (they are finally starting to improve)....as a Christian, it's sad there is hardly anything out there. Look at Signs, an amazing movie that is well-made, not preachy, but has a power-packed message of faith.
I never get tired of this film.

I saw this film as a child. I had nightmares about dark figures for years and years afterwards. I even saw one one time when I was alone while I was awake behind a church playground in the woods. I used to see them nearly every time I closed my eyes. My dreams of them were in black and white and often I was running from them in endless endless allies.
Ha! Pussy! I'm just kidding, I saw this by myself when I was younger and every time the alien appeared I swear it sent shivers down to my bones. It was a really well made film.
I saw the movie (my older cousin showed it to me for some stupid reason) when I was very young as well (like 6 or 7 years old), that sighting scene where they have the St.Bernard barking at the little kids party with the alien walking by the car literally petrified the hell out me for several good years and caused serve nightmares until I hit my teens, I still to this day cannot watch that particular scene because it affects me so badly. I mean, in general I cant watch the film but that particular bit.....christ...I just cant. Even in this video I had to scroll down slightly so I could only see its legs walking on the screen!

It's funny how people in general react to animals dying on screen v. people dying.
I don't find that accurate. Dogs, for example, are often used by bad guys as a way of attacking the good guy psychologicaly, but wife or daughter is much better in that case.
There is literally a counter-argument to every complaint that everyone has with this movie.
Everyone else: "why would aliens come to a planet covered in water if they die from it?"
Me: "They don't know what water is! How could they know it could kill them if they don't know what it is?" Boom, complaint shut down.
Everyone else: "why is the alien attack extremely disorganized? Are these aliens idiots?"
Me: "This could be an alien species that's on the brink of extinction, is struggling to stay alive, and needs resources so desperately that they need to land on a random planet in a last-ditch attempt to survive. The lack of knowledge that we have of the alien's intentions only adds to the suspense of these creatures." Boom, the supposed "plot-hole" has been disproved.
Seriously though, no amount of complaints and rants about this movie can change my mind. I love popping this movie into the DVD player every few months, and it's one of my personal favorite movies. Great review, Chris!

This movie is phenomenal. I will never forget seeing that scene (you know the one) for the first time. Once that alien walked from behind the bushes and froze into frame I felt terror unlike I’d ever felt before from any movie in my entire life. That scene is masterful, the way Joaquin Phoenix’s character reacts to it is similar to the way it makes you feel as a viewer. No joke I was scared to go to sleep at night for a few days because I couldn’t get that image out of my head. I love this movie.
I live further out in the country about 90 minutes south of the Canadian border (lots of farmland with the usual livestock)... I've lived in the area for about a year now, so I'm experiencing the sights, sounds, smells, and climates of every season that are unique to the area for the first time. It's quiet at night with very little road noise from the one road about a quarter of a mile south of the neighborhood. There are times when I'm out on the back deck and listening to the crickets and summer frogs croaking close to where a large fresh water lake resides and at times, all of them will suddenly stop and go completely silent. You could seriously hear a pin drop and it's eerie as fuck. It's so abrupt that it's quite jarring. I can only assume that any number of things like deer, raccoons, possum, owls, or the coyotes disturb them into silence in order to avoid becoming prey.

That happened to me once in Oregon. I was walking back to where I was staying on a little dirt road from the farm where I worked exercising horses. I was dark by then. I was a little creeped out because I suddenly realized how far I had left to walk where no one could see me way out in the tools-weeds. Suddenly I realized I couldn’t here the crickets and frogs- it was like someone turned off a loud stereo- like a deafening silence. Just then a cougar screamed, he’d been tracking me through a field of crops along side the road. I don’t know if you’ve ever heard one really scream but they sound like a woman getting raped- a piercing keen. Just terrifying. It scared me so bad that when I got home I realized I had peed myself a little bit. I’m still not comfortable watching movie scenes or walking alongside crops taller than my waist because of this experience. Anytime I see someone ( like in this movie) walking through crops I think of that night. It evokes genuine fear. Anytime a movie shows corn or soy beans, or any stock type crop I laser focus looking for eye glow. Even having that knee jerk response to those kinds of scenes before Signs came out, I still considered this a great movie. I though the details Shamalan put throughout this one really brought you into the characters’ lives right away. I’ve always appreciated that. Too many movies just go generic with set design or non essential dialogue, sometimes even the lighting or music score don’t do much for the movie; but in this one each were masterful and held the other parts up. It just really looked and FELT like an engrossing story told right. On Christmas my whole family with grandparents, out of town cousins, etc would all gather to celebrate the holiday and the best part was all of us kids would sleep in the same room. Three or four to a bed sometimes, everyone with a flashlight. Every year my maternal grandpa would wait til we were all laying quietly then he would bring a chair in and tell us a scary story. It seems weird as a Christmas tradition but we loved it. He was a told giant of a man, Norwegian, from a huge pack of siblings, having lived a very hard, very interesting life. He always talked to us like we were adults and he expected us to behave that way as well. We never knew if his stories were true or not. Our mother’s claimed they have been. Those scary stories sucked us in right from the beginning with grandpas deep voice, his serious tone that made it seem like it was important to pay attention, thannwe may need the info he was giving us at a later date. That’s what this movie Signs reminds me of. Those scary old stories told to us cousins by our surly bigger than life grandfather. I story rich in detail and weight that you didn’t want to lose track of any pieces as they might be important later. No gore, no flash.... just psychologically dreadful. I remember putting myself if each characters shoes with this movie. I can still watch it over and over and notice new little details. I’m so glad you did a deeper analysis than most do. I get cranky when people put the movie down because of the water issue and that it allows the aliens to get slowed down. Seriously- just because alien beings would be ahead of us technologically doesn’t mean they are going to understand everything in our world. If you think of it from a hunter’s perspective since they are here to hunt us, in the woods would you know every makeup of the molds or bracken you come across while tracking a deer? Would you be super focus or if you are too close to wild sumac, Indian celery or poison ivy? No. This story is no different and to not give it the points it deserves because the critics themselves are too shortsighted to think of it in only surface presentation is just lazy. It’s an excellent movie. I keep praying Shamalan will recapture this formula again some day because when he’s good- he’s good.

I grew up in the country. The crickets and frogs going silent often gives me pause to listen for them to start again. Even my dog's ears will go up when they go silent. Freaks me out if they don't start back up within a few seconds.
Now I live in bush Alaska. All kinds of scary critters, and no crickets to warn me!! Everyone....and I mean everyone, has dogs. At least one, but usually two or three. Now the dogs just look off into the woods and bark. Could be a moose, a fox, or a grizzly. I don't usually get too concerned unless I hear the neighbor's dogs barking too. That means something is really on the move. When my dogs stop barking and turn into a deep rumbling growl, I get the F outta there.
This movie, especially the roof scene where he first spots the alien, had me looking out of windows at night wondering how cool and not cool it would be if I actually saw one. to this day I still remember this movie every time I randomly look at moonlit rooftops. Absolutely amazing.
I’ve just begun the video, so I don’t know if you’ll mention it, but when his brother sees the alien walk by those bushes in the television footage....that was one of the most realistic reactions I’ve ever seen. That’s EXACTLY how people would react. That gave me chills, even if some don’t like the “alien costume”. It still freaked me out.
Hi Chris, I liked your analysis. Graham's wife when she said tell Graham to see. She pointed back to his explanation of the two kinds of people. Those who see the signs and have hope and those who ignore the signs and have no hope. It was a really cool thought. The scariest for me was in the cellar where the little boy couldn't breathe, maybe because I have been there. The funniest is when Merrill is stacking the huge bags of feed in front of the coal chute and he gets done and throws that can of dog food on top for good measure. That was a hilarious and very human move.
This movie is literally one of my favorite movies. So many people didn’t like it because they didn’t get its beauty. I’m not a religious person but the realization that our characters lives were planned by God and seeing it all finally coalesce into pinpoint clarity by Merrill.

16:43 It's a little thing, but I'll always remember the moment in this scene where Graham and the kids are hugging and crying and the camera cuts to Merrill just sitting there, then you see Graham's hand reach into the frame to grab Merrill's shoulder by his shirt and pull him into the family hug. It's such a sweet moment and the way it's shot is touching and even kinda funny. I always run it back to watch it at least a couple times cause it never fails to make me smile.

This was beautiful, Chris. Signs is one of my favorite films as well and the story of lost faith being found again inside such a marvelous science fiction backdrop has always been fascinating to me. Mel Gibson and M. Night Shyamalan are at their finest, and it holds up on repeated viewings.

I never found the pantry thing stupid, I mean the alien is physically similar to us. If someone locked a door, piled 2 tables in front of it and cut your fingers off I don't think you'd get out straight away, the bloody thing probably spend 10 minuets trying to stop blood squirting out the end of its figures, and then had to somehow break a lock and smash down the tables. Could you get out any faster? Sure the Windows may not have been blocked but maybe it doesn't know how to open them. Imagine if you were on an alien planet, one suddenly cut your finger off and barricaded you in a room with strange objects that you've never seen, it'd be pretty hard getting out.
If you're stuck in an alien room, just use the plumbus.

Here's my problem with your "alien crouching = distraught" notion: If he was in fact trying to hide, then why did he calmly strut by? Wouldn't he run, or at the very least jump behind the opposing wall? Why the hell would he just casually stroll on by like he was picking up the mail?!
Also, to say that they just didn't know about water is preposterous. We're nowhere remotely close to the level of technology they have, yet we can tell the molecular composition of planets millions of light years away. Water isn't nearly as uncommon as people think it is in the universe.
And if they DID know, then why the jolly fuck didn't they put on protective suits? You say they're a desperate race, possibly trying to make a last ditch effort for survival as a way to explain their unpreparedness? That's strange, considering they're gifted with FTL space travel, cloaking abilities, whatever the hell they used to instantly make those crop circles and enough ships to orchestrate and execute a worldwide invasion.
See, you can try to justify these plot holes as much as you want to because I know you love this film and want to defend it, but it just doesn't work. I seriously think you're allowing nostalgia goggles to cloud your ability to view this for what it is: a sloppily written film.
I don´t think they are allergic to normal water. I think it´s the fact that it was "Holy" water.

Now the popular fear is the Alien phenomenon and, in the movie, they didn't had a way to fight them, until the last part of the movie where they found an "ancient way" to fight them in 3 cities.

Just a theory.
Those are not plot holes at all. If you saw Interstellar recently, you've seen that humans themselves landed on alien planets regardless of the perils they presented, because they were distraught, desperate. Nobody saw a problem with humans landing on dangerous planets they didn't perfectly analyze, even though they had the *means* to do that, because from their perspective, it's understandable.
The aliens could perfectly have had knowledge of the water, and didn't need protective suits for 3 days exposure, however they couldn't let humans know they were bearing many weaknesses. If you let a group of people alone in the savanna, they would most probably die even though they had gadgets like guns and tents if they don't bug out in a few days - specially if the wild animals start ganging up on them.
You see, technology does not make someone invulnerable. Why do you think the US army "lost" to Vietnamese guerrilla even though they could wipe out entire forests? The humans of Interstellar had all the technology they needed to colonize alien planets, but it was not a walk in the park.
What if all the aliens had were a few hundred or dozen ships, some even hidden away from earth, in fear of the hundreds of thousands of nuclear warheads humans stock "just in case"? What would they do if we fired everything at them all at once, in a last measure let's-hope-for-the-best maneuver?
Another work that explores the limits to which interstellar travel technology can be helpful is Knights of Sidonia, it's an anime sponsored by Netflix. If you read the plot, you see that humanity is desperate and distraught even though they have what seems like limitless technology at their disposal.
Renato Marques Three problems with your explanation: 1. You're comparing apples and oranges. Signs is not Interstellar, and vice versa. They are both independent and unrelated narratives existing within their own respective universes.
2. Even in the high-tech future of Interstellar, our technology was still nowhere near as advanced as the aliens in Signs. We had a handful of ships, still needed cryonic sleep to make a lifetime-spanning, one-way trip to a single star system relatively close to our own solar system, and even then things went FUBAR pretty quickly. The aliens had HUNDREDS OF GODDAMN WARSHIPS WITH WARP AND CLOAKING CAPABILITY.
3. All I see from you, Chris and all the other Shyamalan fanboys are feeble efforts to close his gaping plot holes using massive leaps in logic that have no basis within the story itself; it's just headcanon on your part. If you can't explain these unanswered questions within the narrative of your story, then it's a poorly-written story...unless that's the entire point, like in mindfucks such as Ulysses and Mulholland Drive. And let's face it, Shyamalan sure ain't no James Joyce!

I know it's not a movie, but there is a video game currently in making called "They are here" which is heavily inspired by Signs. It has a free playable demo on Steam which is about 20 minutes, but it captured the essence of Signs perfectly with the farmhouse, cornfields, the aliens themselves and has some homages to the movie. If you're are not into games yourself, but still want to see it, there are plenty of playthroughs on UA-cam of people who played it that you can watch.
Signs was for-real low key Terrifying! Especially when that alien 1st showed its self!!!
You may never see this, but regarding the water: I always thought the water thing was a WAR OF THE WORLDS homage; to whit...."There's amoebas in it". It's a line that is repeated.
Maybe water itself doesn't even hurt them, but rather the microbial and mineral content of Earth's water. Would make more sense than h2o itself hurting them, especially if they came to harvest us for food.
Honestly Signs is one of my favorite films of all time. I've seen it at least 50 times and I still thoroughly enjoy it on every rewatch.
After 20 years this makes a lot of sense. I only watched it once on dvd(back in 2003) and remembered being disappointed so much I refused to watch it again. My main take away is watch a movie twice because maybe you forgot/missed something that actually "fixes" your complaint.
Having a glass be half full or empty isn't pessimism or optimism- a glass is half empty after the glass, once being filled all the way, is LEFT half-way full after the contents are consumed. I'll be honest, I have never really liked this movie. Every time I encounter someone who does, they never give me good arguments for any of my complaints especially in regards to the ending. But after watching this video... all I can say to you, Chris, is... Touche! Those were some DAMN GOOD arguments you made for it. I may have to watch this again now.

Although I'm an atheist I love this film and what the director did. Interestingly, Catholic priests aren't actually allowed to get married. I'm pretty sure Mel Gibson is is catholic in this movie, not an anglican. An inaccuracy I thought I'd point out.

The reason I love this video is because I didn't even piece together what you have here and I still loved the film. The only thing I made sense out of was the water thing when I watched the film previous to this video. So thanks, Chris, you really took my liking for this film to a whole new level! You know what I really love about Shyamalan's films is actually their silences. He knows how to use "quiet" like nobody else. Masterfully building tension. Those who complain about Shyamalan's films are only half-right. He has AMAZING stories to tell but I think they would make better books than films. I actually remember thinking that exact thing when I saw his "Lady in the Water" movie. That I would have loved to *read* it instead. His stories are so complex that they come across as not-quite-right in movie-form.
Except the last airbender. I wouldn't want to read his version at all.

Something I just noticed at 2:00 when Chris comments on Gibson’s character waking up feeling off, notice how everything in the shot looks symmetrical and lined up except Gibson who is sitting up slightly off center to the left.
TheBizziB I had noticed this as well...a lot of the film was shot this way too...the symmetry is unnerving and does not feel natural. It is a great way to make the audience feel uncomfortable.
also the blind on the middle left window is completely down except the other blinds are all slightly open

I watched this movie for the first time in 12 years. This is Night's best work next to Sixth Sense and Unbreakable.
The Asthma Attack scene in the basement is probably some of the best acting I've seen in a film and combined with the score by James Newton Howard, it brought me to tears just by how powerful the scene was.

Man, I loved this movie. I saw it on the movie theater with my dad, sister and broder. We watched it everytime we could on Starz. Awesome analysis Chris, now I respect the movie a Shyamalan even more. I really like Shyamalan movies, and I'm a serious minority here but I liked both the Last Airbender and After Earth xD But I loved Signs, The Village and Lady in the Water.

Jimmy Ramos I agree with Signs and the village , both of those films are great and highly underrated but last airbender , lady in the water and After Earth are horrible , horrible films and there was absolutely nothing good about them. And oh.... how could I forget The Happening which in my opinion his worst film of all time.
Chris...you blew my mind with this. When I first saw Signs, coming off of the Sixth Sense, I was expecting the big "twist" ending. I was convinced that it was not aliens and that water didn't have much to do with anything. I was disappointed at the end that it was just what the movie was pointing to. I haven't watched it since I first saw it...and my goodness, you brought a new light to this film. Thank you! I need to watch this again. As a teenager, I was just waiting for the twist and not enjoying the subtle film. All of the symbolism and hints...I never noticed. Please...make more of these videos!

Maybe the aliens knew about the water danger but thought it was worth the risk.
I had a long thought after watching this as a kid, and thought the aliens planet was dying and Earth was the last hope of their race, but needed to study us to work out how we survive water...
And all they had to do was...you know...avoid the water. Doesn't matter if Earth's surface is 72% water. You just avoid the water....duh.
@@RamrodAI how do you avoid water on Earth? There's rain, oceans, rivers, lakes, snow, clouds, even just plain moisture in certain areas of the world. The ground has water itself. But, yes, you have a point. Just go to the Sahara or whatever. I'm not sure if the vid covered this, but the aliens might have wanted to live on Earth. They have never, ever, seen water before and didn't understand so they just up and left. (Imagine the human species is dying out[planet, climate change, blah blah blah], and then we discover another planet with life. Your a scout only to find- this species has learned to live and survive, maybe even depend, on some substance that we have never discovered. And we have absolutely no idea what it is, zero clue, because we never needed to live. What we learn, however, is that this substance literally breaks down our skin[idk, ph levels or smt]. How would you react when you finally learn that the planet is made out of this substance by 70% of its whole mass) Long comment, ik, but i like to think of we would feel in their place.
Great analysis! You missed one caveat though. When you mentioned that M. Night omitted the aliens coming through the crops to the house. They did leave Mel Gibson's reaction to observing it though. I remember being extremely creeped out during that scene because its obvious his character sees something terrifying and your imagination goes wild.
One thing I think it's interesting is how in the 'foreing footage' of the alien the kids are speaking portuguese with some english words thrown in, to help the international audience to understand where the alien is. Notice them saying: 'Ele esta la atras, behind!'
