When his daughter asks, "There's a monster outside my room, can I have a glass of water?" actually makes a lot of sense in light of the revelation of the alien's weakness being water. In another context, it would seem like the little girl already knew their weakness and was asking for a weapon. Really subtle scriptwriting there

They're not aliens, they're demons. Do you ever see a ship? He's a former priest, she's an "angel" who has water all around that she blesses. The demon is afraid of the holy water all around the house. At the end, he regains his faith. Remember that Mel is a huge who also did the Passion of Christ movie

  • @MatthewStephensAU

50:40 You get it! You got the point!
Over and over, I see people complain that the aliens invaded a planet full of water. but that's not the point. This movie isn't about an alien invasion. It's about faith.
The boy has asthma. So the poison doesn't get into his lungs. The brother who couldn't stop himself from swinging as hard as he could, so there's a baseball bat readily mounted on the wall, but he's not off with the National League. We've got a girl who cannot finish a glass of water, for reasons that don't make sense to anyone, so there's weapons all over the room. And we have the last words: "Tell Merril to swing away."
"See, the question you have to ask yourself is: Do you see coincidences, or miracles?"
The father was a Priest, who decided he didn't believe when something terrible happened, but when the 'long shots' added up, he saw a miracle, because it couldn't be a coincidence anymore.
    M. Night's best movies are ones where every scene, every line, has four layers that build to the final act.

    • @UberNoodle
      @UberNoodle 6 місяців тому

Also the aliens aren't allergic to water. It's the microbes in the water that harms them. Little girl says it right at the beginning of the movie. It's the "amoebas in it". Anybody who's seen any version of War of the Worlds would have understood, because microbes killed those aliens too.
It's a really uncharitable interpretation of the film to say that the aliens are allergic to water, especially that human beings are affected by microbes in water as well, but we can still drink, swim and bathe in water. But we also evolved here. Imagine being an alien and having no resistances or defences whatsoever to the microbes in that water.
So if anyone's going to make a complaint about the story it's that the aliens didn't have any protection whatsoever from the environment. But at the same time, very very very few UFO accounts in the news ever talk about alien "greys" wearing spacesuits. They're always in the nud.
And there's something primal about that that makes them scarier. If they're wearing suits, it would have changed it from a horror to a sci-fi.

It may not be THE point, but it is an important detail. The story has to be believable and logical (even if the world isn’t) or the writer loses readers. It makes no sense that aliens vulnerable to water would invade a planet that is 70% water when they could invade a desert planet like Mars. Shymalan could have at least added at least a hint that they had to choose this planet because of their need for its average temperature or whatever outweighing their fear of water. Critics will latch onto any perceived flaw.

About the no coincidence line and the supernatural aspect of the daughter; The little girl never drank or threw away her water. She left the water filled cups throughout the house as if she subconsciously knew about the aliens' weakness. That could be coincidence or her having inherited her mother's gift.

Reading your comment I thought, What if the mom had a "gift" similar to the people from Unbreakable or Glass, therefore they´re in the same Universe? Unbreakable is weak to water, just like the aliens. It could be a coincidence or a "kink" from Shyamalan.

The Village wasn't a horror film; it was a great love story cloaked by the prior successes of M. Night's thrillers with the expectation of it being the same. Signs is one of my earliest film memories. I'm so glad Ari enjoyed it as much as we did who grew up with this film. It goes without saying that M. Night is a master of his craft. Everything about this film was done perfectly, from the acting to the audio and the camera work to the script. M. Night truly out did himself with Signs. Arguably one of the best films from the 2000s. The ending itself is so epic there are literally no words I can use to describe it and do it justice.
I also love how Ari brought up being able to logic things out. The human brain is wired in a way where we by instinct attempt to use logic to explain why things happen. With films like Signs as well as other supernatural films we see this as well...where sometimes we aren't able to explain things in a way that is considered logical.

And we and other animals are the same vulnerability to microbes in water, yet we drink, swim, bathe in water. We're almost completely made of water.
But we have evolved here, so we have resistances and defences. An alien would have absolutely zero.

Someone who has an allergic reaction to some substance, they might break out in hives within minutes. The way the aliens skin is reacting is the same kind of thing.
If anything, you could criticise the movie for having the aliens completely in the nud. Surely they would be wearing some kind of protective gear.
But then, no real world reports and survivor accounts of UFO abductions etc. have ever described alien greys as wearing spacesuits.

Hollywood doesn't really swing away anymore. They just toss some chicken feed, hope enough birds show up to make it worthwhile for the shareholders, and then congratulate themselves.

Yeahm sometimes Shyamalan miss like The Happening (movie that I love but people didn´t like it) but still tried to put his soul into the project to the point that every single movie he made has his personal "footprint". Something that can only be said of only a few directors.

M Night Shyamalan lives in Pennsylvania. He likes being close to his family and coming home each day when he's working. For this reason, all his films are shot in Pennsylvania.
My understanding is that the first day of shooting for this film was 9/11. NYC is basically in Pennsylvania's front yard, plus one of the hijacked planes was brought down by those on board, crash landing in a field in Pennsylvania. This event cast a shadow over the filming that lasted well after the memorial service held that morning after learning of the attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon.
The day Shyamalan shot the scene of Ray escaping in the car, Shyamalan's beloved grandfather, had very recently passed away. The loss sat heavy on him and influenced his acting in the scene.
Yes, Bo was special; she was psychic, having impressions and prophetic dreams. But the mother was also psychic; she recognized this in her daughter and had dreamed of what her son would look like.

This argument has never made any sense to me. If your planet is low on a necessary resource (food supply or specific minerals, perhaps), then it makes sense to travel to a place that has some dangers in order to get what you need. You just do your best to protect yourself and take the risk. Heck, humans have gone into space just for exploration purposes, a non-necessity, even though they would die in a few minutes without oxygen equipment.

@@JollyJeff I've heard that argument/complaint repeatedly, and it has always bothered me and I wasn't sure why--until just tonight. I realized that its basically standard fare in SF for human explorers (or workers/soldiers/colonists/whatever job) to go to highly toxic, hostile environments because [insert macguffin reason here]. A generally breathable atmosphere with large ground bodies and only occasional, limited (and somewhat predictable) atmospheric forms of a toxin? Relatively speaking, that's a friendly environment in the grand scheme of possible planetary environments. So the "stupid aliens" thing would apply even moreso to all us dumb humans in fiction going into even worse environments--but nobody tends to make that complaint. And there is talk of trying to colonize both the Moon and Mars (and pipe dreams of terraforming mars and venus, plus maybe a moon of jupiter or two), not just in fiction but eventually in reality. All much more hostile environments than Earth is for the aliens in this.
Why they wouldn't be wearing protective gear or some kind would be a more legitimate question, honestly. But coming to our planet? Nah, we'd go to worse.

That alone with worth respecting. on top of that, he makes masterpiece works of storytelling and atmosphere. Check out Lady in the Water - a seriously underrated and misunderstood film. It's a modern day classic fantasy adventure (Tolkien to comic adventure/anime adventure and all in between), using a modern setting and modern characters/professions/lifestyles but as if each was destined to greatness despite their ordinary nature. A modern folk tale story with an adventure troup collected from a modern urban setting. Very creative and atmospheric.

I love the power couple. JP is young but he was just finished Gladiator and show us the share amount of talent he has. Then there is Gibson a veteran actor and they workl so well toghether.
ALso remember when I said that Gibson got acting job years later after the Lethal Weapon 1, bc of that opening scene with going trough the suicide toughs? M.Night S. said later that when he got in business in Hollywood, he said after watching trhe scene, "I want to work with this actor".
Sixth Sense, Signs, Unbreakable is the directors holy trinity imo.
FYI I love Marvel and Batman and so on, but my really favorite superhero movie is Unbreakable. Show power without show off or even show us basically nothing and still feel the power in Bruce was a joy and love to watch :)

Merrill Hess's baseball career is likey a reference to Babe Ruth. Ruth famously held records for most career home runs and most single season home runs; however, at the time of his retitement the Babe had the most strike-outs of any non-pitcher in the league.

One of my favorite little details from this movie is when Meryll is in the recruitment office and says "it felt wrong not to swing." It's because he was always meant to save them all by beating the shit out of that alien.

I LOVED choreographing a winter guard show to this music. I heard it before I saw the movie and there were instant show designs, movement, equipment, everything your imagination could want to built a complete show. It’s the best part of this film. Those three notes almost ranks up there with the two notes of “Jaws” or the five notes of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”.

46:50 ... His wife is saying "And tell Graham to see..." But those are not her words, they are God's words. Graham is right there, she could have just said "You need to see."

I was fortunate enough to see this in theaters. Only time in my life where I jumped out of my seat. I still get goosebumps at the birthday party scene!

I liked this one detail. Towards the beginning when the dogs are acting strange, Graham says he is going to call Dr. Crawford. Then Morgan says kind of confused "he doesn't treat animals" but Graham just says he'll know what to do. Later we see when Graham goes to Ray Reddy's house that Ray is the local vet. Just another little detail. There are so many in M. night films.

Yay! Thank you for reacting to this🤍 I watched this when I was 8 and was so scared, because the aliens can blend in with their surroundings I couldn't sleep properly for weeks 😅 but watching it now I'm older, I understand the deeper meanings. I loved how everything all came to make sense at the end. Like how Bo had her problems with the water, which led for there to be so many glasses scattered around the house and that ended up being a weakness of the aliens. Just a great film.
You both give such great reactions, thank you again :)

This was such a sweet comment, thank you so so much!
Honestly agreed, I remember this movie creeping me the hell out! Especially the moment where you see the alien in the reflection of the TV, ad a kid that s**t changed my (Denise) view of any TV that's off 😂

This movie, probably seen it by now more than 50 times and again I’ve spotted something for the very first time. Nights movies are so multi layered and detailed, also this movie was for me together with The Sixth Sense one big revelation that there is more out there. I’m Night forever greatful for bringing this heartfelt and supernatural stories that humanity just need. It was a joy again to watch it together with you. Keep his movies coming you guys, lots of underrated gems out there!

‘Fun fact’, the car scene where Graham is going to say goodbye to his wife, was one of the very first scenes they’ve actually filmed on 12th of September 2001. The day after 9/11. 🙏🏼

I love that the "Aliens" have more in kin to Demons than they do Aliens. Bo's alluded to being an Angel, and therefore she's blessing all the water that she's drank from and that's why it really hurt the Aliens and it's alluded to the solution isn't just "water" because why not just say that on the TV? Like you mentioned about the other "Signs" that have happened.
Also crop circles can be made by two people with a plank of wood and rope, hilariously. It's extremely easy to make them funnily enough.

I still remember this movie. I was 12 years old in Iran. Iranian TV barely shows any American movies because of the Islamic regime. I came from school, and this movie was on TV. Once I watched it, I was obsessed with it. Everything about this movie seemed believable to me at the time. Great performances by Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix.

I don't care what anyone says, this movie is amazing! It's subtle, the score is amazing, the family dynamic is amazing and touches on some serious issues, the visual effects were great for their time, and it has such a great ending!! The fact that the aliens are weak to water doesn't mean they're stupid. It very well could have been that they came from a world that didn't have water or they didn't know what it would do to them. They may have also been incredibly desperate and chose to come regardless of the risks. People don't think things through anymore.
Also, they started filming this movie with the flashback scene between Graham and his wife on September 11, 2001. Talk about a tough day at work.
