Thanks for another great review! Always loved the look of this vehicle on the road over here in the states but never bought it due to lack of AWD (now have a Hyundai Santa Cruz 😍). This however seems like they threw a bunch of random stuff together without much thought or much improvements over the original. Toyotas more (rightly) focused on their new electric lineup, but if they’re gonna do the CHR this bad and then try and GR it they should do it right. This is just a slightly higher trim level.

Great review Mark. Agree on space etc and cost. Changed wife's car recently and tried chr but there was more room in back in my Golf mk7 than it. It was priced close to Rav4 . We went for Rav4 in the end. Acres of space and in hotter weather we get 5.6ltr average from it. Wife went from lexus ct200h to Rav4 and hasn't looked back since. Chr lacked space for us and cost was very close to Rav4.

The word "sport or sportiness" has nothing to do with CHR to be honest. I've 2.0L Orange Edition as daily and 3.4L 987.2 Boxster S as weekend car. Please do a review on older sports cars as well if you can it would be really interesting to hear your opinions.

Great review as ever Nobby I do like them in terms of the design but the space in the boot isn't great, for the extra trim level money it's not special enough and it's ruined by a CVT gearbox and I don't care how much they've changed a CVT is still a CVT.

@@NobbyOnCars Having done my research the CHR was the perfect fit for me. I've never sat in the back, don't have kids and 90% of the time, it's just me. I have only had a couple of times where people have sat in the back. If I wanted space I wouldn't have shortlisted, or bought this car.

Had a loan of one of these for the last few days, 2019 model. Really like it, but that engine (1.8 hybrid) is awful to listen to when accelerating. Handles lovely tho, so easy to drive.
Anyone know if the rav4 hybrid engine is the same when putting power down? Considering trading my volvo v90 cross country in for a rav4. More reliable and taller boot.

    • @NobbyOnCars
      @NobbyOnCars  2 роки тому +1

It is the same although there’s a PHEV RAV4 coming. They’re all generally 5-6L/100kms although some have reported 3.5L

So it's a GR line car, but poorly spec'd from a GR stand point. Alloys, paint and red stitching. Nice looking but for 40k, there's a lot better out there.
Interesting you were EV 77% of the time. That's good

Prob gonna sound controversial but don’t think this deserves the gr badge it’s a bit too subdued for me. The Yaris gr sport looks incredible in its styling compared to this.

€40k for something sporty gets the 204hp Cupra Born and they have good spec as standard or save a few quid with a lower trim ID.3. Hard to see the appeal of hybrid around €40k especially when you can get a full fat EV. Very little room in the rear of the C-HR and the dark interior and small windows make it a tight, dark space. Not very practical.

    • @NobbyOnCars

I have a chr sport 2020 and the ev mode and % is BS. In ev mode and at traffic lights the engine will run to charge battery even if the battery is 1 bar off full. The engine will run parked and not register on the dashboard as being on .....so don't believe the ev% The space at the back is too cramped for an adult and hasn't got grab rail on the roof in the back for those less mobile to get in. I had to call breakdown support to charge the tiny battery as it ran flat last year .... my crime was to have the car off radio on and charging my phone for about 30 mins. This is fairly common with these cars. The radio powers off after a few mins which is annoying and the front window needs the window heater on pretty much constantly in cold weather as the air heater is useless

Pretty much every manufacturer offers their performance badge as a trim level, Ford with ST line, BMW with M Sport, Audi with S line, Mercedes with AMG Line, VW with R Line, etc etc. If people want to pay a lot more to have a few sporty badges then why shouldn't Toyota try to cash in on that?

  • @loukasantoniou8054

I really dont get why would you need to over emphasise that this is not a gr, like there is anyone who thinks this a proper gr product like the yaris and the supra and the 86. Specially when you judged the car based on what its not and not what it is. What this is, is like what everyother manufactures does and thas a sporty option packadge. It like an amg line, s line, m sport, r line. An in my opinion, toyota did it better. Better dumpers, lower springs, stiffer anti roll bars, along with some bodykit and better looking wheels. At least you get everything included unlike other premium manufacturers. Plus you get fully indipendent all around suspension with double wishbone rear and discbrakes alround as well and not many manufactures do that an this price and this type of vehicle. And you get one of the best if not the best hybrid technology on the market. And yea thats not car you take for a large family, is a city car and for small trips around. Its a small car. Of course if you want practicality for long journeys and some offroad capabilitties, you get a bigger suv. but for a stylish, quite fun to drive and very cheap to run and maintain daily commute, this chr and the mazda cx30 are some very good options. I just wish it didnt had the stubid cvt.

@@NobbyOnCars its like putting an m sport badge on a non m car. What you say, doesnt make sence. The car is not named gr chr, but chr gr sport. Similar to a 330i being an msport model versus a full m3. All manufactures do that, so i dont see why would you expect the chr gr sport to be a full on gr model. It has some mechanical upgrades like an m sport model(or s line or amg line or whatever) but not the full treatment. They dont fake anything or pretend anything.

Having done a deep dive on Toyota R&D, tracked everything Toyoda has said, I stand by my statements. Even take a look at their GUI in the cars, it’s from 2005. They are the Japanese VW, at least VW have a CEO literally risking his job every month to convince the Luddite’s to come into the 21st century. The fundamentals of what a car should be and needs to be has totally changed. It’s all about manufacturing efficiency and profit margin unseen in automakers to date, more like software makers. How will Royota sell their 40k CHR when the Chinese are gunning for 20k BEVs within 3 years with similar size etc.
Toyota with the hybrid system are like Sony with Minidisc. They tried to optimise a technology that was obsolete when the world was moving digital.
I just hope Subaru and Mazda don’t get brought down with the Titanic!
