  • Toyota’s growing range of compact SUVs was kicked off by the striking C-HR. Available all over the world in various specifications, Australia scored perhaps the least appealing one - the 1.2-litre turbo with a CVT. Even so, it’s a good car and one of the few hybrid options in the segment.
The C-HR is a car of missed opportunities, though. The company was no doubt hoping it would bring a younger audience but it probably hasn’t had the desired effect. First, it’s not very fast and second the, in-cabin tech is really ordinary. Which is a shame because it’s a good package.
Seeking to make hay while the sun shines from the delightfully bonkers GR Yaris, Toyota has borrowed an idea from other manufacturers and set up the GR Sport brand for warming up the range. First off the block was the C-HR.

Hyundai Kona N is so special compared to this badge job from Toyota. Yota should have just put the GR Yaris powertrain in here and be exciting for once.

I'm an old fart from the UK, Your specs are different to ours. We have a 'design' spec which is one up from the base model. I love it but I went for the 2 litre option, so illogicaly mine has a total bhp of around 180,this sporting version you tested has about 140bhp!

Some corrections … the GR is a 2.0 not a 1.8 and it makes just over 180hp not the 120hp that the 1.8 makes ..and I’ve never heard of a 1.2turbo option on a hybrid .

Not in Australia mate, we only get the 1.8 gutless model

That infotainment system is so old and dated . I’ll pass and it should have cooler seating as we live in Australia not Europe and it’s bloody hot here . Also CVT’s suck not to mention JBL sucks and you want wireless apple car play and wireless mobile charging . This isn’t a young persons car at all . Gen Z or even millennials wouldn’t find this up to date .

Toyota can keep making boring to drive cars for ever, and keep selling tham like hot cakes lol. I enjoy driving cars but this? No thanks, different strokes for different folks now, GR Yaris yes.
