Thank you - you've just validated what I've been doing for years now. As a 5'6" StreetGlide rider, it made so much sense for me to get on and off my bike from the right side and to this day, it's the only way I get on and off any motorcycle I ride. You just need to learn to
ignore the funny looks you get from other riders when they see you mounting/dismounting your bike this way.

I rode sport bikes for most of my 30 years riding and always mounted low side. Bought an Ultra Limited last year (shouldn’t have waited so long) and started watching your videos. I decided to try high side mount after seeing your videos last year and also because the tour pack opens on the high side and that’s where I’m getting my helmet from. It seems natural after doing it a few times. I love your positive content. Changing the world one video at a time!

  • @JefferyStevens-qw1lb

I just watched your video of mounting and dismounting on the high side. As a motor cop it makes extreme sense to dismount in that manner. And on the second note it makes even more sense for all of us to do the same. We all can have a bad dismount on the side of the road and fall into live traffic. We are all made of organic material and no one survives a 4500 lb car traveling at 70 mph, ever. I have a sport bike with the rear end adjusted higher for quicker turn in and you should see all the scratches on my rear tail section. Starting out on the high side gives you a 12 to 14 inch advantage to straddle my bike.
I have a center stand so my bike is pretty tall. I watch the video and it just blew my mind on why we all swing leg from the low side.
This is a complete no brainer, can’t wait to build my muscle memory to on mounting from the high side.
That’s the funny thing about people’s perception about Leo’s. They do not understand on the level of training they receive on all levels.
They are trained to function under duress and it’s all about muscle memory. Love the video, it really just blew my mind, thanks again.

Thank you so much for explaining this in the simplest terms; it finally sunk in. I am old, like some of the other commentors below and I don't need to do anything athletic to just get on the machine. Even though it is not a H-D, just a 420-lb RE, I will switch over to the right side and lean over the bike to grip the left handle grip knowing it will not un-balance since I will do it right.

I have a rather tall Adventure bike and I mount using the peg. It never occurred to me to mount from the right or high side (DUH). I used to have horses and it was ingrained in me to mount from the left as a horse has no low or high side . I also own a Kawasaki cruiser and usually mounted using the double hop method like your friend. Amazing how we never stop to think about simple things and continue to do things like we always have without stopping to think there may be a better way. Great video and as I'm 74 years young this will certainty help me moving forward. Thanks!

Thanks Lt. I was beginning to think it was me. Been doing it this "right" way ever since training as a MO 22yrs ago. So old habit do in back die hard. So much easier if you're swinging over a radio box or a travel trunk. I know some get a little scared with they feel the bike move a little to the right and don't trust themselves.

I actually learned this as a DISMOUNTING technique when I was a kid with a dirtbike that had no sidestand. (tough to get off on the side that's leaning up against the barn!)
Once I heard Motorman what's - his-face say that coppers are TRAINED this way... I was all over it in my sixties (now mid-seventies) on my Venture. Being able to explain to "disbelievers" that cops are TAUGHT this method not only gives it an air of authenticity... it avoids all the conversations about my bad back and waning muscle strength!
    Good video, bud!

Love your presentation and explanation! I had a right hip replacement 7 months ago and I don’t even want to try to mount/dismount on the left side of my bike. Brand new subscriber (riding since 1972). As a new rider, I saw Motor Officers taking off from a stop and their feet were immediately on the boards. If they could do that on HDs, I could do it on my Honda CX500 - so no more duck-walking for me. Then I saw they always mounted from the high side. So, I learned to do that, as well. I learned a lot through observation, but never heard the details (the "WHY") before. Watched two of your vids, then subscribed. Nice work; thanks!

This came at a perfect time. My wife just bought me my first bike a few days ago for my 40th bday. A 2005 Road King Special. Every time I get on my bike, I get on from the low end. I have a passenger seat rest that I keep kicking. Plus it didn’t feel right getting on from that side to begin with🤔. I still was struggling getting on from the high side, for the simple fact that I never thought to step onto the floor board. That blew my mind🤯. Great video. Definitely appreciate it🫡.

But I am not a cop. I am 300 pound guy. Thank you for showing me the technique and weight distribution for the right side mount. My fear of my size was pulling the machine over on top of me. good video Robert, another thing that is good to know for any rider or especially short guys like me (5'3") is when you get on the bike turn the handlebars all the way to the right. It makes uprighting the bike easier. I have mounted and dismounted on the right before and it does feel awkward but I think I'll start doing it more to see if it suits me better. I bumped into you at Daytona in 2022 and we chatted for a little bit, you were just coming into the vendor area. Just wondering Robert if you have done a video on how to pick up your bike when it's on the ground and the best technics? Always enjoy your videos. I will be 70 this year and will have 54 years sitting in the saddle. These machines are heavy and my 17 RGS comes in at somewhere around 850 lbs wet. At 5'3" they are a beast to upright by yourself. Do you ever go to BBB in Arkansas in the fall? I'm in Missouri and we always do that trip since it's only a 5-6 hour ride. Thanks, again Robert would love to come and do your training class someday. Right there with ya. I'm 5'4" 29" inseam on a 32 1/2" seat on a Kawasaki Concours14 not lowered. Aside from turning the handlebars, I've found 1 foot down stops ESSENTIAL and even practice emergency braking that way. I've even seen taller new riders on Connies and ADV bikes struggle with smooth 2 foot down stops on these beasts.

In my original MC safety class it was drilled into our heads that you always mount on the left side, so that is what I have been doing without question. It was almost as if mounting on the right would get you shunned and your license revoked, they were that serious about it and they never explained why. Now that I am a bit more "seasoned" and have a painful right hip, throwing that right leg over isn't fun anymore. Thank you for this timely advice!

I honestly had never considered getting on from the right. I have a smaller back rest on a 2016 Indian Springfield and getting on from the left is not really an issue. Where I see the right being better now is when my wife rides and I have the larger passenger backrest on. It’s a hike to clear that and not scuff the right saddle bag. The high side looks a lot easier and I’ll definitely give it a try. Thanks for posting!

Thank you Lt. Great video. I hit my saddle bags all the time Im mounting or dismounting. Sometimes I lose my balance because the heel of my boot gets caught up on the seat. Also great to learn from a fellow new yorker. Thank you

The reason you mount a horse on the left side only is that horses are very naturally skiddish on the right side, so mounting a horse on the left was just common sense. Before watching this video, I didn't understand why you mounted your bikes on the high side, but now that I've watched it, it all makes perfect sense to me. Thanks for another great tutorial, Robert

? wrong horses are trained. if everyone gets on the left it’s a uniform standard and the horse expects the movement over there is a rider. we are right footed , is the reason , the left foot goes in the stirrup. 🛑 stop

I can't thank you enough for this video! I am (was!) a dismounting hopper guy with a bad left knee until I watched this. The 1st time I tried it, I tipped the bike way over to the right but with a little practice, it has become easy and no more strain on my knee. Believe it or not, I have had 2 people come up to me and tell me that I am mounting/dismounting on the wrong side so I explained to them why and mentioned your channel.
    Thank you again!

I have been mounting my cruiser on the right side for yrs. I find it much better to get on and off especially when you have problems with your legs and hips like me . This is a great tip for other bikers .

Lol, first time I've seen you, been riding 30+ years, never really thought about mount/dismount. That said, this makes complete sense, and I'm going to try it. Thx.
Love the attitude, I'm a stay out of my Kool aid guy too. Also about 3 years from retirement from the job myself.
Maybe I'll see you on the road some day
