- In Kassel, Germany, at the very site where Nazis once burned over 2,000 books by Jewish and Marxist writers, one artist has built a colossal tribute to free speech. The “Parthenon of Books” is a giant temporary replica of the famous Greek temple in Athens. The installation is covered by more than 100,000 books that have been banned at various stages throughout history. Created by Argentine artist Marta Minujín, the exhibit is meant to spark debate over censorship in literature. Once the exhibition is over, these books will be handed out to allow the banned to enter literary circulation once more.

Banning 1984 is the definition of irony.
Kind of like if they were to ban/destory copies of Fahrenheit 451
Why anyone would ban such a classic, Idk. People can read hunger games if they want to, but these are classics
whitepiano23 its a revolutionary book, it wasnt banned because it is a classic, but because it made people think by themselves
whitepiano23 I read 1984, and I didn't like it...
indeed Fatima Almishal
Who else laughed when they saw twilight?
Me
😂
discorded harmony I've been there nearly half of the thing is covered in Twilight and Harry Potter.
discorded harmony lol me
discorded harmony should be
Anyone else wanna find out which country banned Twilight?
Ellie White Maybe the countries that have dictators, or religious extremist.
VoidX or maybe A SANE COUNTRY
dark angel blue
I was being serious xD But yea, it's not like I care for it...
I don't know but, I want to move there.
It could possibly just be one school district in a country
0:31 twilight is banned and that's what really matters.
So is Harry Potter, LoTR, and Star Wars, also GoT. Anything with a religious back tone, is most likely banned somewhere. Get educated.
I dont see Mein Kampf, makes sense...
On Luna there is no Twilight
the roof is missing
James Caldwell That just means we haven't banned enough books.
The one currently standing in Greece is the same - roofless upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/da/The_Parthenon_in_Athens.jpg
James Caldwell I
James Caldwell RAIN DROP
The original roof was made of wood and straw, I believe all structures in that period were, so you can not see it today. If it had a roof it would be harder to identify as we all think of the Parthenon as roofless, since it is today. It is like sculpting the Pantheon without walls. Viewers would need a push to know it is the Pantheon.
THEY BANNED 1984 I'M DYING 😂😂😂
I live near Kassel and I didn't know they had such a magnificient project.... Thanks for the Info guys 😂👌
RefiaPhenix du hast das echt nicht mitbekommen?
RefiaPhenix how 😂😂 Im from the north and i went there for the whole Dokumenta
Loved it when we had the Parthenon at Friedrichsplatz. I was lucky to get the book I wanted at the first day of the distribution.
Same
I hope you know that this artist one day will build a name for themselves, the books the general public will receive one day could be worth much more than the retail price because of the fact that this artist could possibly get a bigger recognition in the art world
0:54 Which country banned Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner? Hmmm
This is so cool. I looks like a nerds dream.
I wouldn't have used the Parthenon as the structure for it, but it is a lovely idea. Saw this in class and I thought I would look at it some more.
Don't burn books, it's bad for the environment.
Instead, use them as construction material.
The thing they didn't say is that you can bring books to add to the thing and you can also take books when it ends
Whats the background score called ? Any one can help?
A pantheon of banned books in a country that still bans some books, 10/10
Ricard Lindemann 😾 Yes, some books that are intended to cause immense distress to members of a nation subjected to a most horrendous dictatorship, and who were then pounded into destruction as a consequence. At a time in a generation from today it may be possible to rescind the ban thus allowing disinterested discussions of their content. I do not approve of banning any form of material, be it in book or dramatic or cinematic or theatrical form; however, I am also sensitive to the impact that some publications may have where controversial issues are concerned. Claiming offence without evidence should not result in censorship.
Marta Minujín is an exceptional artist
An amazing story. I'd love to visit it one day
Lucinda Yu, it's a temporary installation. Go fast!
8 days left and they start deconstructing it tomorrow, so maybe only 2 days left...
"south american artist"... i bet that if it was a british, german or french artist they wouldn't say "european artist"
Leopoldo Petrieska That's because South Americans are mostly Hispanic while Europeans have lots of different ehnic groups even though they look the same, saying European will offend some people thinking the channel is saying their race is inferior and insignificant compared to all the other races and ethnicities in Europe.
Cloгох Вleacн So does south america. There are tons of ethnic groups in south america.
Thank you for that! I am ARGENTINIAN but also SOUTHAMERICAN.
i am from Surinam, 'south america' and i am not of the Hispanic tribe, i don't think surinam has a major hispanic community at all, we got some brazilians but other then that we also have africans, javanese( indos), indians (india), chinese, japanese, lebanese, dutch, jewish and koreans.
I don't get it and I don't care, fix your country if there is a problem. Crying about it on UA-cam won't get shit done you coward.
At first I read "blocks", and I was like "how do you ban blocks?"
Thank you for uploading this! What a very interesting art exhibit.
When are they going to put this down? i want to get one, not the twilight book though.
Ricardo Ayala They are not for taking them out ... ITS FOR LOOKING AT THEM
0:31 is that twilight?
Given I see condensation in with the books...my guess is at the end of the installation all those books are moldy/ruined.
Did she said limited time only?!?! Mom get the ticket , please .
You could make a replica of the entire universe with how many things germany bans
Nek I For example?
@@marar.5285mein kampf
The Roof would be an upside down open book.
What book is 1984 that everyone talks about ...
"For a limited time"...
What is the "deadline"? I wanna see it but i'm low on cash right now (and i have not booked any holydays at my job)...
HistoricaHungarica it'll be gone in 2 days :/
Why are books banned? Books should never be banned!!!
AGREEE!!!!
Study Buddhism if you want an answer to that.
wondering which country is banning Twilight?
If you can, go to the documenta, I was there 2 times and it really is an awesome arts display that anyone only remotely interested in arts or politics should visit. But don't take a tour, most of the guides are not that good and its more fun to just let the art fascinate you.
Where in germany is it
Kassel!
Should have made it out of everything from video games, to movies, to speeches, to books, to icons that Germany currently bans.
Cause that shit would be just as big probably
there's the book 1934, by George Orwell ;))) I'm reading this for school this year, and there's also the true diary of a part time Indian
That book is Burmese Days. It was banned in British India during WWII
they banned Adventures of Tom Sawyer? omg wtf
It's a donation
legend has it that the mein kampf is in the structure
Really good installation. Is there any reason why it is Parthenon, instead of any other of building?
cervus the Parthenon is a well-known symbol of democracy
This is beautiful... I ought to read more also. So inspired.
George Orwell -1984....why?
What's a banned book?
See United States Customs Regulations slips distributed on airplanes to US-bound passengers
Noone ever banned Twilight in Germany 😂
Wow, you are very early :D It gets disassembled tomorrow.
Why was 'The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian' banned? I was surprised to see it on there
Are Anthem and Atlas Shrugged on exhibit there? The Libertarian Non-Aggression principle was inspired in part by the Nationalsocialist hangings at Nuremberg.
0:55 Wut kite runner is illegal they teach us that in school
Now that's what I call art!
The absolutely true diary of a part time Indian

Its a nice sculpture to be removed,at least so quickly.
