  • In Kassel, Germany, at the very site where Nazis once burned over 2,000 books by Jewish and Marxist writers, one artist has built a colossal tribute to free speech. The “Parthenon of Books” is a giant temporary replica of the famous Greek temple in Athens. The installation is covered by more than 100,000 books that have been banned at various stages throughout history. Created by Argentine artist Marta Minujín, the exhibit is meant to spark debate over censorship in literature. Once the exhibition is over, these books will be handed out to allow the banned to enter literary circulation once more.

      The original roof was made of wood and straw, I believe all structures in that period were, so you can not see it today. If it had a roof it would be harder to identify as we all think of the Parthenon as roofless, since it is today. It is like sculpting the Pantheon without walls. Viewers would need a push to know it is the Pantheon.

    A pantheon of banned books in a country that still bans some books, 10/10

    • @sirmeowthelibrarycat
      @sirmeowthelibrarycat 6 років тому

      Ricard Lindemann 😾 Yes, some books that are intended to cause immense distress to members of a nation subjected to a most horrendous dictatorship, and who were then pounded into destruction as a consequence. At a time in a generation from today it may be possible to rescind the ban thus allowing disinterested discussions of their content. I do not approve of banning any form of material, be it in book or dramatic or cinematic or theatrical form; however, I am also sensitive to the impact that some publications may have where controversial issues are concerned. Claiming offence without evidence should not result in censorship.
