- Even Hollywood is paying attention to book banning efforts. A new Academy Award-nominated documentary short film, “The ABCs of Book Banning,” masterfully pays tribute to the important books that have faced calls for ban across the nation. The documentary makes clear just how important those books are to readers, just how absurd the nature of book bans are, and why access to those titles is so crucial. Perhaps most importantly, “The ABCs of Book Banning” emotionally underscores exactly who's most affected by the book bans: school children. There's another voice featured prominently in “The ABCs of Book Banning” - one that members of the 'Velshi Banned Book Club' might recognize: Grace Linn. “I don’t call about the ‘Moms for Liberty’,” says Linn, “I call myself a mother of liberty.” We first learned about the 101-year-old when she gave a salient warning at a Martin County School Board meeting in Florida with a hand-made quilt featuring the covers of popular banned books. Grace Linn knows what these children don't yet understand - that limiting access to literature doesn't just cheat them of knowledge, squash their creativity, and stifle their growth. It threatens the future of their country - our country.

A banned book usually has better sales because the ban invites curiosity and the urge to gain knowledge
I remember years and years and years ago, LOL, when I was in high school the book Catcher in the Rye was banned. I guarantee just about every student in that school read it anyway. That's not to say I approve banning books. But if older students want to read something, they will read it. The younger ones, it may be harder.

The greatest strength of the democratic party is ignorance and they use that to control you.
Have you actually been in a library? All the books in the children's section are age appropriate. No book should be restricted. Just because you don't want your child reading a particular book doesn't mean another parent doesn't want their child to read it. Go to the library and help your child pick books you are okay with and leave the rest alone.
Unless things changed since I was a kid, there is nothing preventing a kid from checking out adult level books.
Librarians don't care what a kid reads as much as that they do read (that's their job).
Furthermore, some of the teen stuff is marketed towards teens (rather than age sensitive) , and the Libraries only lightly check for age appropriate content.
Many kids are in the library unsupervised, which I'm cool with, but this allows kids to expose themselves to concepts they may not be mature enough to properly process.
I'm not stating that censorship is the answer, just that library sections aren't going to prevent a child from circumventing reasonable family norms.
Do you even know why the books were banned, or you're just yapping for something you don't understand.

This documentary is brilliant! I am beyond impressed by the wisdom, maturity and insight of these 7 to 10 year olds … their eagerness to learn … the empathy they display … their desire to understand history … their inclusiveness in wanting every child to see themselves in the books they read. Therein lies my hope for the future.

As a public school teacher my biggest concern for Florida’s students is that they will be painfully less knowledgeable than their college peers. Florida is setting up their next generation to fall far behind the general knowledge of students from other states. How? Well, if you have no point of view of these classic books, that are almost ALL banned, you will sit through college classes with zero prior knowledge . Florida is robbing this from students who will feel foolish and ill prepared for college dialogue, research, and perspective. It is a huge deal, it cannot be downplayed. Why are these books classics? Because they teach immeasurable concepts, situations, outcomes. They ask a student to be free thinkers, to interpret these books for themselves. R.I.P. college bound sunshine state kids.
Florida is not banning books. They are restricting access to minors for certain book content. You'll find in California that there are actual book bans of content that would expose the leftists attempts to rewrite history.

I oppose book banning in any form, but I do wonder how many of these parents complaining about it read with their children on a regular basis? One way to overcome a ban is to purchase the banned book for your kids. Not an optimal solution but one that can work before the eventual day when Moms for Liberty self-implodes.
The second you tell a normal curious child what she is not allowed to read, she'll immediately hop on the internet to read all about it.
They've taken away access to free books. Not every parent can afford to buy books.

This is histrionics. None of these books are banned. If they were, then you couldn't buy them. The problem is that you can't force parents to pay for material that is counter to community standards. That is the way local schools function and it shouldn't come as a sudden surprise to anyone. You can complain that not everyone meets your superior standards, but those people you're belittling think the same thing about you.

I never understood the whole argument of over this book banning. I am a school teacher by trade and ran into another individual that built homes for a living and was obviously very more wealthy than me. But we did share of common trust with both of us being parents and we couldn't understand why anybody would support pyrography as good reading for out children. Adults don’t shape everything kids get to learn. Nature shapes it. You don’t live in a world where two men can have a baby bruh. You live in a world where a few people think two men can have a baby. You live in a world where a man and a woman can have a baby. Two men can adopt a baby.
ALL of these books are available at the public library. They aren’t banned.
