Two Old school Pontiac muscle cars go head to head in a quarter mile drag race. Both cars are competing in the Pure Stock Drags, so modifications are limited to porting, blue printing and minor weight reduction without altering the stock appearance. That means stock intake manifold, stock exhaust manifolds and street tires (see below for more information about rules).
The 1972 455 HO GTO is very rare as only 310 were built. The GTO is powered by Pontiac's 455 Cubic Inch (7.5 Liter) High Output V8 which was rated at 300 Net horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque due to a drop in compression ration which occurred in 1971.
The 1968 Firebird 400 racing the 455 HO GTO is also is very rare (only 110 built) since it's optioned with Pontiac's potent Ram Air II 400 cubic inch (6.6 L) which was rated at 340 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. The Ram Air II 400 was the predecessor to the Ram Air IV and had round port heads. The Ram Air II 400 was no joke. This particular Ram Air Firebird is from high performance dealership, Royal Pontiac.
The 455 HO GTO is a 4 Speed manual and the Firebird 400 is equipped with GM's Turbo 400 automatic transmission. So WHO WINs? Watch the video and see what happens.

According to their Facebook Page, the Rules for the Pure Stock Drags are:
The class is limited to cars produced between 1955 to 1979 built in both United States and Canadian assembly plants The cars had to come with a minimum of 12 months and 12,000 mile warranty from the manufacturer.
Any car running faster than 11.50 will be disqualified and will not have a qualifying time recorded. Any convertible running faster than 13.50 will be disqualified and will not have a qualifying time recorded.
All casting numbers must be correct for the year and horsepower claimed including intake manifold, heads, and exhaust manifolds. Blocks do not have to be "numbers matching," but they must be the correct displacement. Overbores up to .070" are allowed. Stock cranks only.
All Engines - 1.5 extra points allowed over advertised.
The camshaft must be correct for the year, model, and horsepower claimed for the type of lifter (hydraulic or solid). Roller cams NOT allowed.
The valve train must be factory stock for the year, make, and horsepower claimed.
The ignition system must be stock, including the distributor, cap, coil, and wires. Points may be replaced with any electronic conversion that fits under the stock distributor cap.
The carburetor must be correct for the year, make, and horsepower claimed. Jetting and metering changes are permitted. THE CHOKE ASSEMBLY MUST BE IN PLACE AND FUNCTIONAL!
Cast-iron exhaust manifolds are mandatory and must be correct for the year, model, and horsepower claimed. Internal modifications to the exhaust manifolds are NOT allowed. Under no circumstances will headers be allowed, including those cars that came with headers delivered in the trunk. Pipes must be routed as they were originally for the year, make, model, and engine combination. Mufflers must be stock looking in design, that is, oval in shape. No glasspacks or straight pipes allowed unless installed as original equipment. Maximum muffler inlet and outlet size is 2.5 inches. X & H pipes allowed.

The transmission must be correct for year, make, model and engine of the car. 3-speed manuals may be upgraded to the correct 4-speed if originally available.
The rear axle must be of the same manufacturer as came with the car. Any gear ratio is allowed.
Reproduction tires or radial tires only, and you are allowed to run tires one size over stock.
Factory wheels only. - Авто та транспорт
Round port RA heads and much bigger cam with 10.75 pistons and better breathing exhaust , not surprised at all .
My brother Louie bought a new 1967 black Firebird 400. His had a 4 speed. When my other brother Jeff came home from Vietnam Lou gave him the Firebird. Then Lou bought a fully optioned 4 speed 1968 Camaro RS SS with 375 hp 396 with factory aluminum heads and a ton of other work from nearby Nickey Chev. Never did much with it.
I'm not surprised that the firebird won 400 lbs lighter 40 more hp 4.10 gears I am however surprised by the e.t. 12.78 that's pretty stout
Why are you surprised neither one of those cars are stock they’re far from it the Firebird just happens to have more mods than the GTO does
Low compression ratio
You guys don't know much about Pontiacs. The 455 will go slower with a 4.10 gear every time, it goes through the rpm range too fast and you don't get use out of the torque its making. We have proven it time and again with 455s that you don't need more than a 3.55 gear until you dramatically increase the airflow (by over 100cfm) and have rods that can take the rpm on a 4.21" stroke crank.
The RA II is a round port engine like the RA IV, 455 HO/SD, and they will all run like that stone stock. I am kinda surprised the Firebird wasn't faster since the RA IIs can go 11s surprisingly easily. A 72 GTO is damn heavy, that is where the difference is, but the 72 will run like that on 87 octane. Now put those RAII heads on a 455 and feed it enough octane, you will get that Bird very close to the tens, if not into them.
My 72 455 HO Formula Firebird runs mid 12s easy, the previous owner put headers on it, but otherwise the changes he made make no real difference other than to slow it down. I put it back close to stock and it ran half a second faster than he could ever get it to go. Things like a single plane intake, Edelbrock carb, 3.70 gears, it all slowed the car. A stock iron intake (the 71/72 455 HO had aluminum intake) and a Qjet then some 3.08 gears and 12.60s were like driving to the store in it. Its waiting its turn in my shop for a full resto. I will go back to the manifolds when I rebuild it. My Bird is heavy with AC, power steering - brakes - windows, and all kinds of other options, its probably as heavy as the GTO is.
Then I have a D port 455 that ran 11.40s in 3900lb 79 firebird with ported iron heads, 228/232 cam, 850 Holley, and some cheap almost as good as RAIII manifolds 1 5/8 headers. Stock 1900 stall converter and 3.42 gears. 4.10s slowed it to 12.1-11.7 with most runs around 12.1. These are not small chevys, they do not respond to the same changes the same way. It is incredibly easy to make them run in the 11s.
That Ram Air II was pretty stout. Very underrated.
@@SweatyFatGuy Depends on tire size really, I run a 14x32 slick with my mild 455 and 4:11 gears, hit the lights at 6200, high 9's in a '67 Firebird. That GTO had 27" tires I would guess. I did run RA2's, CCed at 55 on the same 455/473 and ran 10 flat. Also the RA2 intake ports arent as large as a RA4, I'm sure you know that tho, there are a few of us old time Pontiac people out there.
Not surprised. That Ram Air II car is known around that race as being set up just for that race. Weight stuff aside that black car stretches the rules as far as he can get away with. I’m a big fan of either though. A true stock Ram Air II Firebird is no where near that fast. Credit goes to the owner on that one and not so much the car. I love these races and used to go every year. It’s hard for many to understand that although it’s called Pure Stock they certainly aren’t. Talk to the guys who race in that class and they’ll tell you. If you show up with a true stock car you get embarrassed.
cheating at this level is hightech but prevelent
Ram air 2 was beastly.
Head and shoulders above the RA 3 or any HO.
Not surprised. They perform exactly as expected. Well done.
Had the same '68 Firebird, but muscled it out with a Holley 760 double pump carb and a much hotter Accel ignition (including coil, wires and plugs) as well as BlackJack headers. Used to run the quarter in the high 11's (probably about 400 hp). Sure do miss my Firechicken.
I love Pontiacs. Awesome video. Keep up the good work.
Not surprised. Bird weighs 500 lbs less. 12.78 is good but not great. Honestly I'm a lot more impressed with 13.20 from the 4,000 lb. stock low compression GTO. Other RA2 Firebirds in purestock have run 12.10 - 12.20.
The Firebird has a higher compression ratio . They dropped it on the goat .
Vaya buen video un Pontiac firebird 400 || de 1968 VS Pontiac gto 1971 Bro buen video pues
Thanks for the videos
Not surprised, GM really cut the compression in 1971. The GTO has a better rear suspension for hooking up. It was out in front for at least the first 60 feet where most races are won, but the Fire Bird went around it.
It would be interesting to see this same race if the GTO had the TH 400 automatic transmission instead of the 4 speed manual.
I right away knew the Firebird was gonna win. Lighter with more horsepower than the GTO. Ram Air Pontiacs are fast cars. The last gen Firebirds with the Ram Air induction were mean.
No surprise
Both beautiful muscle cars
I'd rather have the GTO even knowing it's not as fast.
Interesting how much performance these cars have over when they were delivered from the factory. In the day I ran a 426 wedge Plymouth with factory times around 15 seconds. These guys were a little quicker in the mid to high 14 seconds.
Those firebirds were a terror.
The RA 2 with steep gears lets it rev up fast where it makes its power, plus lighter weight, 440 hp motor if tuned properly per Leader Automotive/Royal Pontiac. 455HO is a great all around engine with gobs of torque even stock, to make it fly it needs a cam and more comp
If that was a trans am with a 455 SD it probably would have taken the fire chicken, either way two iconic cars and a great race.
Not that surprised but highly entertaining nonetheless. Love these shootouts. Love all these cars.
Even the GMs.
Pontiac IS a GM car. Good grief man. Cadillac, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile, Chevy......are ALL under the GM umbrella.
Nice Firebird.
Neither one was stock I owned both of those cars in the 70s neither one hit like that stock But the bird was always quicker in the quarter mile different story on top in
Big sea,
Pontiac didn't sell very many Ram Air 2 Firebirds. They ran 13.3s right off the showroom floor.
Those 455's couldn't pull a Lid off of butter dish... You got a beef 'em up to be any good
That bird’s cam didn’t sound stock
The Ram Air 2 was the first engine to use the 041 cam. Commonly referred to as the Ram Air IV cam. It is a very hot cam. I have one in my '69 GTO with an aluminum headed 455 and I have run 11.80's with slicks. And it idles exactly the same as the car in the video!
@@1967davethewave wasn't there also a similar cam to 041 for the automatic transmission cars? It was available in 1970 I believe.
@@1967davethewave Eddys or Kauffman? Ported or out of the box?
@@BlueDuck211 Mildly ported Edelbrock's.
It's all in the head's
That is no surprise, Ram Air II is one of the really potent engines from that era, one of those few that were probably underrated. (if anything, most regular engines where probably overrated..) And all the HP ratings just comes from the GMs stupid "not less than 10lbs pr. HP" So a 3400lbs car has 340HP, same engine in a 3750lbs car has a 375HP rating...
And of top of my head the engines are pretty similar, but the 455 have much less compression and camshaft in stock form as its main downside.
I'd still rather have the GTO
Not surprised! ‘68 had big weight advantage, 4:10’s, auto trans and high compression motor vs smog mobile ‘72 even with the ‘72’s big hole shot on a sleepy ‘68 driver😓
I've never understood when they made a 455 why they put low compression in them. They certainly do not pull their own weight unless they're tweaked
1970 GTO 455HO 360 HP had 10 to 1 Comp. with leaded fuel but by 71 emissions became tougher to pass had to go to lower compression with unleaded fuel actually the 71 - 72 455HO GTO was Quicker than the 70 455HO GTO
Firebird
Check "Ram Air II Firebird" on UA-cam. Those Firebirds are mean!
Uumm..........what do ya think you just watched in this video? That IS a Ram Air ll.
@@howabouthetruth2157 I know that. Just telling people where they can get more of it. Cool your jets.
Everyone thinks of the poncho low rpm hi torque. Not true look at the head flow cfm
yup the 4.10 help a lot if the gto had 4.10 you see little different
4.10's will slow down a stock 455. Even the HO motors are only good for about 5500 rpm's because of the smaller 068 cam. The 455 Pontiac in stock to mild form perform best with 3.55's. I have been racing them since the '80's and have found this to be the case time after time. The 400 however, especially with a Ram Air 2 and the 041 cam can make those gears work.
Tires squealing the whole way
Yes. Very surprised indeed. How the hell did the 400 do that? I would have bet my next paycheck on the 455.
Not so widely known - Ram air II had the huge OVAL port heads and more radical cam than Ram Air 1 or stock. Also had cast HO header-like exhaust manifolds. Same engine as the later RAM Air IV really, I was NOT surprised with outcome at all.
you are a newb,thats all
had a ram air 11 1968 gto in 1973;with 9 inch slicks and headers it weny 11.88 all day long
1972 were low compression engines.
Power to weight ratio Duh!!!
The 455 was defanged. 400 still had it's testicles intact.
Not stock thats for sure
Agreed
The engines gotta look stock, stock intake and exhaust manifolds, but they can be modified internally (ported) certain things inside these engines can be modified lightly such as slight increase in compression and so on. He lists alot of the class rules for these cars in the description.
@@badass6.0powerstroke10 Not sure it that was a typo, but these engines are not allowed to have ported heads that I'm aware?!
@@badgerbait8351 Factory option on the Ram Air engines, perfectly legal in the Pure Stock class.
@@normhodgkinson6965 Porting?
Are you serious?
no
1981 Dodge Colt Turbo with 18 lbs boost will beat both of them but does'nt sound as cool.
455 ho what a joke I don't understand where the ho comes in at it doesn't have high compression it doesn't have horsepower the only thing it has is cubic inches wasting a lot of gas
