Drag tests of unmodified, never rebuilt, original muscle cars are the best. It's like being there 'back in the day'. F.A.S.T. and Pure Stock are cool, but this is REAL stock. I really wish more owners of low mileage, 100% original museum cars were willing to race like this. It would make for a great race series. R.I.P. PBIR. 25 years ago work would bring to that area once a month, and I would always take my rental car to Test N Tune night. 4 cyl Oldsmobile Achivas' went 17.7 and a 3.8 Taurus would go 16.8 @ 82mph. Never had so much fun going so slow! Guys in the staging lanes would go nuts when they found it it was a rental. Just had to remove all traces of shoe polish lettering from the windows before returning the car! Awesome video!!

The reason people don't is because you throw a rod through the block and you not only lose your motor and your resale value, smart people pull and keep the original. Race a motor that doesn't matter

Trap speed was limited by its rear gear ratio. Motor was wound out 1200 feet from the finish line, and so quit accelerating at that point. The eighth mile trap speed ordinarily would indicate a quarter mile trap speed between 105 and 110. Like the guy says, taller gear or taller tires would have let it accelerate the full quarter mile, and both trap speed and ET would have been better.

    • @roadtesttv
      @roadtesttv  2 роки тому +3

herman452 Thanks for the comment, Herman. You’re exactly right. I didn’t want to hurt the motor by overreving it through the traps. It needed a taller tire or 3.50 gear. Thanks for watching !

IMPRESSIVE as most of those run in the 14's, you certainly weren't losing any traction off the line and it seemed to hook up good and shift quickly, road and track did a test of the old Shelby 500 with 390 gears and only got 14.5 and some were even slower than that.

3.9 diff ratio with a 428. Should be 3.25 or even 3.00 as they have lots of torque and dont rev. Would be far faster and use about 5200 max.
Ph 3 GTHO Falcon was a 13.8 quarter mile car on the original Dunlop radials,, and no glued up tracks. Charger E49 with a 265 6 was 13.4. Again on radials.
Those Polyglass have the grip of a dog on lino. Why are they on a 7 litre car, a modern radial would make the car 100% better to drive. And those early Mustangs with big blocks handle like crap with so much weight over the front. A very attractive car though.

After the 1973 oil embargo by OPEC the price for muscle cars dropped out. Insurance costs didn't help either. I got my first car at 16 yrs old in 1976. My Dad had worked on cars most of his life and he checked out the drivetrain and gave it a pass as not worn out. It was a 1970 340 Dart Swinger with only 42,000 miles. It had the 727 Torqueflite and the 8 3/4" with 3.23 gears and Sure Grip. I never got it to the drag strip, but at the measured 1/4 mile in our town of Pasadena, Tx it would do 96 mph. Watching the Pure Stock Drags the same cars were doing 14.6 at 96 mph. Oh, I got it for $350 plus TT&L. 3 years into the OPEC BS.

Thanks for your comment. We did. The video you didn’t see is when we loaded the converter with slightly more rpm like you recommend and it blew the tires off on the launch. Instead of making a pass blowing the tires off like a fool, we lifted the throttle, stopped the car, backed it up to the starting line, restaged and came out softer with traction. The car was not going any quicker on that tire that day, with the track prep that was present. Thanks for watching.

It was black with a gold c stripe and it had 40K original miles with a totally straight body and rust free! He threw a 351C 2V in the car and sold it for $2500 but kept the ram air scoop setup. I offered him $3000 if he included the ram air but he wanted the ram air for his 1967 fastback so he didn't sell it to me. Looking back on it I should have offered $2500 and not have asked for the ram air setup! He thought it was a 390 GT and had no idea it was a 428 CJ.

I had one of the fastbacks with the C6. Bought it new picked it up January 1969 and took it to LI National dragstrip on Easter Sunday. Pure stock with stock Goodyear polyglas it ran 13.6 at 98.6 mph. Changed out exhaust to Thrush mufflers, put a set of cheater slicks on it and it ran 13.4s at around 101 very consistently. Nothing could touch it on the street until the 427 Camaro showed up. 7-10 mpg. Should have never sold it.

Great video! Sad to see that track close up. Friends had a 69 CJ, 4 speed convertible. One of 3 built I found out later. I helped with it back in the 70s and started a lifelong love of drag racing. It was originally run as a stock class car and had a national record in H/S. It was moved up into SS/HA, converted to auto, tubbed, huge ladder bars and won class a few times. That car had to run against Bob Reed's Hemi Cuda in NED points and eliminator. We never did beat him, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. Rich Baldassari (RIP) drove it and owned it with a guy named Terry Dubowick. Great guys and memories! That car was sold to a Ford racer named John Pressing who had it for many years. I saw it was auctioned a few years ago, after being returned to stock condition, for over $100K. Probably worth more now. Thanks!

I'd love to see the car run with the factory cast iron C80E-9510-C intake manifold. The times would probably be the same or a little faster because the original intake flows better than the aluminum Police Interceptor intake. The only advantage it has is the around 35 pound weight savings. Also check to see if maybe the gears were changed out since the intake was changed. The 4.30 gears would cause the issue you had. Back in the day, people in the know knew the 3.91s were the way to go.

@@roadtesttv; That’s pretty interesting. Considering that Ford produced 317,404 1968 Mustangs.
      42,581 fast backs. 25,376 convertibles.
      That’s leaves 67,957 coupes. Carroll Shelby built 4,450 GT500’s.
He also built special coupes, the EXP500 CSS for the Mexican market. Either way, only 221 GT coupes with the Cobra Jet 🐍 makes absolutely no sense. I currently own a 1969 Ford Cobra with the original 428cj. 4spd fastback. It’s 1 of approximately 14,000 Cobras Ford built that year. Of those were approximately 3,787 formal roofs.

Long and short, whether or not it makes sense in 2022, in 1968 according to Kevin Marti and Ford Motor Company only 221 428 Cobra Jet Mustang Coupes were built. The C6 transmission was slipping badly so I took it to a transmission shop to get it rebuilt, $320. When I picked it up that night I took it to the track and with the G7014 tires and no positraction I was able to turn 13.92 with the tires chirping 2nd and 3rd at the end. I ended up selling it in 81 with 138,000 miles due to the connecting rod knock and started smoking. I wish I still had that car it was lots of fun to drive.
