When I was rebuilding my '56 Nomad I sent my liftgate to Madmooks (Mike Bakotich) and the results were great. Not inexpensive but well worth the price. Importantly, he stressed that in order to keep the liftgate from becoming distorted again to remove the torsion rods from the vehicle and that is what I did. Eight years later my liftgate is still in perfect condition.
Hey Henry! Yeah man ive seen his work before and it's nothing short of amazing! Sounds like you have a very nice 56 Nomad! That's great the liftgate still has a perfect fit! Talk to you later buddy!👍
Yeah, I know the later model like to Jimmy S 15 has the gas shock on mine. I put a safety bar on it, which is supposed cut a piece of PVC that just barely fits over the shock and it actually is a safety block in case the shop gets weak it don’t crack you in the head lol

Don, You are absolutely right about them bending. The first thing I did when I got my Nomad in 1974, I disconnected the torsion bars and put them in my basement. Now if your don't like lifting the full weight you can add the newer gas struts on the sides where the locks go that keep it open when you drive. BTW, is there a factory half round gasket in the upper groove that the window frame sits on to? I do have the window 3 side gasket but this is possibly another 1/2 round gasket along the top only I'm talking about.

Hey Big Block Kings! Im not sure why they chose to use pot metal to make the liftgate! Steel would have been a better material! Have a good one Buddy 👍
Can you take the torsion bars out and put the gas shocks to help the problem
The torsion bars removed would help but only after the liftgate has been straightened
I can’t afford a nomad , so I got the poor man’s nomad (55 handyman !!).
Hey Frank! There's nothing wrong with a handyman wagon at all buddy! I like them all! Catch you next time 👍
Twist on the thing to much and they break 😳😭
Yeah man you have to hear them slowly and move them a little bit! Then repeat the process over again and make sure to let it cool all the way down in between! Catch you next time 👍
