Serial Killers don't typically kill people they know, and aren't usually in databases. The FBI estimates that there are something like 200 serial killers active at any given time. You also have to realize that most Serial Killers have an MO, but just like anything else there are probably those who just kill random victims without an MO making them EVEN MORE difficult to catch. What you should do is look at the number of people who go missing without a trace every year and are never found or found dead years later. Obviously not all of those are Serial Killer victims but I bet a number of them are. Also, there are a lot of KNOWN Serial Killers active right now that have yet to be caught, which means there are probably even more that are unknown.
And BTK and the Greenriver Killer are proof that there are serial killers can easily get away with it. These two went on for something like 30 years and were only caught because they made a stupid little mistake.
