Abandoned Fertilizer Factory - CIL Company Chatham 4k

- CORRECTION: May have actually been the location of the former CIL fertilizer plant. I actually visited the library in Chatham looking for more info about this place and the staff, they were older ladies so I believed them, assured me that the 2 stacks you could see belonged to the old Darling Company plant. Soooo, I may have to take a revisit to see if there is anything left of the actual Darling Company site.
I noticed a couple pictures online from this place and it started to make me curious. I have been to Chatham Ontario many times and never heard about the old Abandoned Glue Factory also known as The Darling Company. After looking around online and asking around, nobody really knew anything about it or could give me any details aside that they remember the awful smells that would come from it.
I went down to the library and read up some old articles about the history of it. Turns out it started originally as a brewery pre WW1, then an abattoir then the glue factory around 1940. They would take cattle and turn them into glue, oils and other products. I guess it was a horrible place on the inside from the stories I had read. The stuff nightmares are made of...
In the video I was slightly incorrect of the location. The river that is beside the place is a small creek off the Thames River, not the actual main river itself but it does merge into the Thames slightly downstream.

My Father, Uncle & Brother all drove truck for darlings. It was a rendering plant. My Dad only worked until around 1958 when he contacted tuberculosis from the dead animals. I remember riding with him to the slaughter houses to pick up the dead animals, bones and the rest, left over after killing an animal. The smell was horrendous. They took any kind of large animal,,cows, horses ,pigs, and once even had a bear, which other workers sat in the front seat of my dads car. He thought it was one of us kids waiting for him, until he got into the car
I remember this place well. I was born in the east end of Chatham on Wellington Street east, just a block away from this place. I lived there til I was 16. I still live in Chatham.Yes, I remember the stink quite well. I have always wanted to go for a walk back in there to see what was left. Very interesting video!!! Now I know. Thank you.
I lived 2 doors and know this building very well. Also back in the 50's and 60's the hydro company stored their hydro poles on the other side, that the neighbourhood kids all played on top and under them. Now in my 70's, I am surprised that we even survived all this industrial stuff in the residences.
I am from Chatham too, now live in London, can you tell me where exactly it is located, I would like to explore if I can.
Great video! Thank you for this. I live in the downtown area and have been planning on checking this plant out.
Thanks
Wow so sad to see it abandoned ! Well captured! :) Greetings from Ireland! :) I love flying my Q500 for some aerial footage & castles! :) Thanks a million for sharing! :) Thumbs up! :)
I have lived here all my life and I had no clue it was even here
That's really cool Kyle!...your starting to find a lot of hidden abandoned places around here!!...good job bud....keep the vids coming!
Thanks for the tour!
i'd just like to say i LOVE your camera!!!! =D i love how smooth it is when you move around, it's not shakey or blurry and the quality is just AMAZING!!! just watching your video it made me feel like i was in a First Person view video game xD LOL i love coming to the old glue factory i've been there a few times and just recently been there for a photoshoot
I know it well too, can you give me the location, I would to do a photoshoot for my camera club. They would love it.
I've been here many many times over the years, however it's been a few years. Thanks for the up to date views!
Oh, it's not beside the Thames River, that's just a creek. The structure a bit behind the stacks, though doesnt look like a structure (where there's a hole with a small ladder), that use to be a garage of some sort. Was still standing about 16 years ago, as friends and I made rooms in it, transforming it into a party spot. First time I went back and it was gone, it looked as if it burnt.
I dug up some history on this place a few years ago. It opened in the early 1900's and was used as a rendering plant. They would burn the bones and guts of animals and livestock. There was a big fire in 1926 but no-one was injured. The city stunk so bad they had to plaster the small smoke stack and build the big one. They did produce fertilizer and closed in 1946. In 1976 a little girl died, she fell from the rafter's behind the incinerators. They then tore the rafters down. Today it's a death trap from everyone smashing it up.
my wifes from town and I've rode all around Chatham and never seen this great video
Very nice has changed since I was a kid in my teens ,35 years ago and visited that place many time has decade a lot .
thank you for sharing can't wait for your new video
awesome video!!!
Very Cool.. Will have to check it out one day too..
Wow I love the stability on that camera what camera is that?
I'm going to warn you now, do not go there or the black bridge at night. A friend of mine was legit possessed and vomited. I've also been told other stories that would make your skin crawl. Completely different place at night.
i got chased today with my friend, creepy place
I used to frequent the area, years ago when I was younger. I remember these places being a lot more intact. Very mysterious place come to think of it. Creeps the wife out when we go on the walking/biking trails.
I went here today! Creepy place. I’m currently staying in Chatham for college.
5 years ago that big steel part was up completely and not collapsed. it was pretty sweet
my grampa also you to work there when the factory used to run. Also the spot that you thought was a homeless men's home actually was, I met the guy one day hiking. I think his name was Joe, it used to be a lot biger, he had a washroom and kitchen and every thing.
this place is awesome ! all kinds of stuff, further back, into the bush there is a well, that still has water in it.. river water.. however you can climb down into it.. really cool.. im also from chatham... There is a barge there as well, they used to dreag for sand in the thames! haha
Yes, this is the C.I.L. factory beside the creek. The Darling company rendering plant is on the opposite side of the tracks towards the top of the picture (thumbnai). My father worked at Darlings for a while and contracted TB there. I believe the CIL plant was accessed via Stanley Avenue and Darlings was access at the end of Park Street. There seems to be nothing left of Darlings. Here's a link to a period aerial picture.

the barrels you are seeing could be left over from the factory. My Dad use to load these onto the truck, from the slaughter houses
Great footage but I wish you would take Julie or Jay with you just in case of an emergency - you wouldn't be alone. I still enjoy the Pa. Turnpike videos which were greatly enhanced by the drone. I'll be glad when you have your own show on the Discovery channel.
there should be a few videos on UA-cam considering people play airsoft back there every weekend
My grandfather worked for that company for many years and yes they had stinky trucks
I'm think the barrels were dump there by the company if they served meals for the workers at the plant.
I remember watching another video on this place a couple of years ago,The place was more intact, there was old cars in the back, and some were near the stacks was a hole in the ground were there was under ground passages and tunnels..
Robert Hardwick if you find it again please let me know, maybe it requires some further investigation on my part
Yes,I will,I did do some hunting for it today..I will look again tonight, like i said it was years ago when I did see it
Robert Hardwick Did you find it yet?
HI new sub , please . neat video and cool aerial video I read some of the comments , and I know now why there where so many foot paths, from air soft guns, cool place to do that there.
most of the building was removed in the late 80's after a young girl fell and was killed
+Geri LaMarsh Yes, I believe her name was Sherry Slate that fell from the building and died.
I go here a lot too
More..Chatham Paintball 04-11-2010..And Abandoned Incinerator And scrap Collection Urban Exploration,...This one talks about stairs going into the ground and a DOOR!!
I didn't hear anything about stairs or a door, do you know roughly at which time they mention it? I would go back for a revisit if there was something like that
i live in chthem kent and we play airlift down at the glue factory
Home sweet home
I'm from chatham... whereabouts is this?
Ha, it's crazy when I found this place because I'm in Chatham all the time and never knew about it. If you follow Wellington or King Street all the way to the east end you can park there on the dirt trail and see it from there. Right beside the railroad tracks, enjoy!
Kyle Mills Found it on maps! Looks cool. I might check it out. It's not even visible on Maps, but that must be due to the fact there's a ton of trees. If you find the area on Google Maps though, just north of where the factory is, is what looks like a pillar knocked over, and a white building. Unless that is the factory? Not sure what that is.
Kyle Mills Nevermind, that might be what you looked at around the mid part of this video :-D
Isn't this where Danny Miller's body was found several years ago?
It wasn't because of the fire that everything is gone.. I am thinking they tore it down because we used to play in the actual structure, what was left, you could see the top of the building from Park ave... when you drove by, it was an aqua colour.
+mama carebear the barrels have been there from what I can remember. That would have been around 1986 or so... I think the last time I was in there was 1989?
+mama carebear also the water nearby it isn't the thames that is just the crick. the thames is on the other side of colborne str. that is just MC Gregors Creek.
That was my old house about 5 years ago I move and that was the house I grown up in
Interesting
I have been searching, and found 3 videos so far,The first is..Defending the Glue Factory..The second is Inside The Abandoned Underground Incinerator..Taped By The CRAZYCAR CLUB,In this video the roof is still up and intacked at the chinmeys...Next is still by Crazycar club..Return to the Underground Incinerator Tunnels,...None of these are the one That I seen,But I will keep searching and will let you know.. ROB
Here's the location coordinates:
www.google.com/maps/place/42%C2%B024%2725.9%22N+82%C2%B010%2708.2%22W/@42.407185,-82.168948,411m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x0?hl=en
Speak Inglis That's what I thought too, but in Maps, it looks like it's a smoke stack on its side, not standing. Plus if you look at some footage of the drone with the tracks, it doesn't really line up with the positioning of what you've pointed out.
+VaultHuntersUnion it just the angle of the veiw on the map
I image that barrel dumping ground is very toxic.........
yes, you're probably right but heck, I was in exploring mode and didn't even think about it, until you mentioned it that is... ;)
Watch the video,Abandoned Incinerator And scrap collection,They talk about the stairs and door, watch the whole video..
Tallow(rendered fat) was loaded I believe onto rail cars
Scroll down to Geri LaMarsh's comment!!!
This place is horrific.
I used to live at 278 Wellington east for 20 years (My childhood). Many nights I would ride home late and on at least 3 occasions I could hear Horses screaming. Quite Frightening I will admit.
I do believe this is where danny miller was killed as well as years ago a young girl 15 or 16 was climbing the stacks and fell I believe she died
+canadiangirl173 Danny Miller was killed at the black bridge, over by grand ave east. It's a walking bridge now no train tracks at all.
+canadiangirl173 I believe her name was Sherry Slate that fell from the building that was later torn down. I remember she was around 15 years old. From John McGregor School.
yes I heard about that and I have been in that building you talk about I was up to the top floor and could see how she fell to her death never new her name thought .The steel stair going tom the top floor had sections missing sot it was difficult to get to the top floor with out falling. That had to be 35 to 40 years ago.
We r having a game tomorrow if u want to come out and watch or re ord us
I paintball here LOL
Watch out for the killer cult who lives in those woods! Haha
airsoft
