One of the things that Paul is absolutely god of is picking efficiency if it looks effortless that's because for him it pretty much is. His right and left hand coordination is almost unmatched
Totally agree. Dude does this weird picking 3 note per string then the next string 3 note legato picks the next string 3 note so on etc. It's unreal. Makes me want to quit my job and practice 8hrs a day till I'm fast like this.
What I dig about Paul is he doesn't just have great chops and speed but also an incredible sense of rhythm and feeling. The way he attacks the guitar is so sick.
The great thing about Paul Gilbert is not only is he an amazing player but he seems like a really down to earth and cool guy who really really enjoys playing.
1: he is improvising without drums, without a full band 2: he is playing around and shredding licks not playing a complex melody. 3: he knows every scale, every mode, every bit of music theory. 4: your comment was just plain funny and made my day 5: you're probably a troll and i'm feeding you.
I was able to see Paul Gilbert at a live Seminar once, and god damn does he know his music theory like the back of his hand. Total props to him and his playing.
I've seen this so many times, and still the bit at 3.37 gets me going. That tone is just superb. The combination of that, note choice and vibrate are just perfect.
What I really like about this is he isn't doing anything so over the top as to be impossible. The simple approach he takes is what's so great about it. Sure he can shred and play a million notes a second but that isn't all of what he is doing. A lot of different styles and techniques here and that makes for a great solo.
@@hafizmuizz7269 He's pretty much all blues these days. I wish he would do another album like GOOMY or Fuzz Universe. Racer X could use a comeback as well.
Mika Tarkela >>> not me .... this was the video that convinced me to find a NEW hobby ... like whale watching, or getting drunk every day during my UBER shift ( why, cuz my dreams of ripping it up on an axe in front of thousands of ppl feel like they been crushed , that's why:))
He's the best! I've never heard him miss a note. He's entertaining japanese fans who like this type of stuff, plain in simple. If you've seen his body of work and his technically capability with those long fingers and precise timing you know where i'm coming from. Also his tone is amazing and he looks like there's no effort in it.
I read the critiques of his tone below. No one is considering that this is off a recording also the room live may sound totally different. The other thing is that bright tone is what you need to cut through the mix with a bass guitar and bass drum pounding. He may be mixed to be heard because especially when there is a keyboard there are frequency cancellations. He may have it bright because his hearing loss is in the low frequency range not the other way around as some have insinuated. His monitor mix may sound totally different EQ wise as well. Also who ever up loaded this may be tone deaf and eq'ed it to their liking as well which may actually be the case : )
He purposely goes for this tone when noodling live because it is very snappy and twangy and single coil-like. To get this sound he is using the 5 way switch in the 2nd position, this combines the Middle single coil with the Split Bridge humbucker (top coil) so you have 2 single coils in parallel, like in a Fender start. They call this the notch position as you get the quacky snappy hollow sound. Petrucci uses a similar thing but for his clean sounds where he splits both hum buckers in the middle for that scooped sparkly clean tone. It is very fun to use, I have the same setup in my ibanez and I know exactly why paul loves it. The twang and snap in person is very addictive to play on, and it essentially allows your hum bucker heavy metal guitar to have great single coil sounds, and options for clean jangly tones. But you couldn't play a whole song like this, the sound would be too sharp and annoying after a while. ALSO , these ibanez guitars (like mine) also have a Treble bleed mod, meaning as you turn the volume pot down the guitar retains all the bright high frequencies. They use a 330 pF capacitor soldered over the volume pot lugs for this. Makes the guitar very bright as the volume is down between 1-5, again useful for cleans and single coily sounds.
Holy smokes. The noise of the pick attack during the last 9-10 bars was unbelievable. You can hear the consistency, how relaxed his left hand is, and speed. Perfect intonation. Ferocious playing. If I could play like that, I'd never not be without a guitar in my hands. Hands down, the best alive.
the man knows how to use the pinky finger, as a matter of fact, he use his pinky finger on this solo way more than slash in a lifetime. Great guitar player Mr Gilbert is.
I remember watching this solo everyday after school when I was kid on vhs, learning it note for note. Still one of my favorite Paul Gilbert solos. I mean so simple compared to his early racer x days and God knows I love that shit, but there is just something about that pumping g minor rhythm with that almost clean laney tone that gets me every time!
Unmistakably pure Gilbert tone and style. Always loved this guy. Purely unique sound and style of writing. Love his Racer X stuff the best. "Hammer Away" kicks ass. Loving the fact that he does it all with hard tail, non of that whammy shit.
Oh man, can you fucking read??? I just said that a part of the sólo sounded like Dimebag, and you understood "Dimebag is the best and kicks Paul's ass"
+George Lucas It does... It has the feel, mainly because of the neck pickup rounder and kinda muffled sound and using a scale/note choices Dimebag uses a lot... Is that an insult to Paul Gilbert to you?
I've loved Paul throughout the years in his many stages of his musical journey. But this was my most favorite version of Paul. The young, aggressive shreder, hell bent on defying his style without compromise. This was Paul saying.... "I Am Paul!"

Hard to believe I had lessons with Paul in 1986 at GIT.... he’s so humble as well as an incredible guy and amazing guitar player.
😳
Dude that's awesome.
Shredding + precision + tone + originality + versatility + SOUL. Rare combo. The guy is amazing.
He was take a guitar course in early age.. And this is the result 🔥

@Beppy Lol. 😆
Clean, picking, fingering, chords, dexterity, speed, muting, feel. He is the total package of what a guitarist should be.
Helps having 9-inch fingers too
What I dig about Paul is he doesn't just have great chops and speed but also an incredible sense of rhythm and feeling. The way he attacks the guitar is so sick.
paul gilbert is simply amazing. he can play blues, neoclassical, acoustic, classic, ballad songs, major, minor. he's mastering all technique!!
To play that technical, on point, and solo, is an incredible feat. On top of that, he is still original. Enough said.
0:36 dat level of tone control is superb!
I love how the crowd responds so positively when he gets funky or bluesy, maybe even moreso than when he shreds.
the solo was so good paul turned those adults into kids
nice pfp mate
The great thing about Paul Gilbert is not only is he an amazing player but he seems like a really down to earth and cool guy who really really enjoys playing.
I like the way Paul plays clean without all the effects or tricks.
Excellent. Gilbert isn't "just a shredder," he has his own thing and there is substance to it.
Paul Gilbert could throw his pick across the room at his guitar and make that sound amazing.
1: he is improvising without drums, without a full band
2: he is playing around and shredding licks not playing a complex melody.
3: he knows every scale, every mode, every bit of music theory.

He is the best ....number 1
He's just amazing, his pinky does more and faster than anybody I've seen
One of the underated guitar legends, great skills, sounds n techniques,He can play anything if he wanted to.
2.4 million watched this video. Underated somehow doesn't strike me
He got nothing underrated
Underrated? By whom?
Hi ain't underrated man...
Underated? To people who don't play guitar? He's one of the best to ever do it man. Your guitar teachers should bring him up for sure lol.

Jeez, i love his tone here. He made that ibanez twang, roar, beat and just flow.
Just love PG's feel....smooth pattern legato scaler...
He’s perhaps the most staccato player besides Steve Morse ever
this guy loves his repeat signs lol he's a monster player, learned a lot from his dvds
Paul Gilbert has written some really amazing songs, just because you haven't heard them doesn't mean they won't stand the test of time. :)
His control over the instrument is excellent, and he never seems 2 run out of places 2 go!

One of the Best LIVE GUITAR Solos ever 🎸💯💥👍🏻
Beautiful riffs and speed king. So amazing!!!
this tone is timeless!
The noodling is just for showmanship purposes. But if Paul Gilbert plays a blues or rock solo, he will blow your ass away
