The left hand part is a piece of cake really. you won't sound flamenco with only being able to play sound left hand. Picks are a big NO in this form of guitar art. But of course Paule takes mano izquierda to the next level, just be fair about that.
***** you are right, I stand corrected. I accept this this little impro of his, he certainly is a respectable guitarist. I just wonder how would he sound had he learned to utilize I M fingers for picado. Rasgueados, unfortunately sucked big time, almost as cheesy as any student's first attempts at guitar playing.. :)
Honestly, Paul Gilbert is one of the greatest, and one of my biggest influence. But this, was not the greatest flamenco ever. And he's already said that.
I like to call this Shredingo, a masterful combination of shred and flamingo, as Paul likes to call it, merged into one sizzling genre guaranteed to rock your socks off and make you feel like a gentleman at the same time!
A flamenco guitarist could not play a rock guitar like paul. And paul can't play flamenco like a flamenco guitarist. However this is an incredible performance because paul is extremely talented on guitar. Great job and more importantly nice on the ears!
I love the humility of this man. He doesn't pretend to be an expert at anything but he gleans so much influence from every style of music and appreciates everything he learns in the process. What a true musician to feel everything he hears in the notes. I don't think any comment is a credit worthy of the absolute skill of Paul Gilbert.
Absolute legend. Paulie g had always been one of my favourite guitarist. Love this piece of music. Used to b able to play most of it but have not played it in years. Glad I found it again all these years later. Brilliant👍👍👍
I'm really curious to see how you play flamenco, guys, if this piece is "painful to watch" and he's "incapable of" doing that. I'm not an expert in flamenco, moreover, I'm not a big fan of what he's doing with electro, but(!), I think, it's just not fair to say that it sounds bad.
I really dig how you can hear the fusion between his own technique and the flamenco style. Im not here to trashtalk, music isnt a contest, open your mind.
+Giant Robot amazing???He is an amazing palyer but this piece ain´t good at all...Listen to PAco de Lucía y you want to know what real flamenco is about.
To all the "purists" out there, Paul admits he doesn't play "real" flamenco, but c'mon! The piece he plays is still awesome & very musical. Get off your soapboxes & hit the woodshed, maybe then you all could play half as well.
To everyone dislike his performance here, look how he feels his playing, the rhythm, the melody, its still a flamenco. You are no one who can judge my idol like that!
From a flamenco standpoint, this really does sound like a shredder attempting to play on a classical guitar. But as a stand-alone piece without it trying to be called "flamenco," this is very good.
Paul’s always had a sense of humour about himself and his playing….he’d happily concur that he’s following in the grand tradition of rock guitarists playing a pastiche of classical or folk styles
It's different. If you want to hear a flamenco player then go do that. I love it when people get out of their element yet still stay true to their original style.
Paul is truely one of the finest guitar players around today....I am most familar with his moments with Mr. Big....but the more I find out about him, it is clear I am only scratching the surface! Muy bien Pablo Gilberto, aunque no tocas con la técnica flamenca igual eres un músico increíble. En la eléctrica eres de los más grandes. Monstruo, gracias. Hace mucho tiempo no veía éste video, lo tenía en DVD. 😁🎵
Because if u ever have heard real flamenco ala Paco De Lucia, this is equivalent of meeting the hottest girl in the class on your 30-years-reunion-party.
It is not inability, it is not comprehending flamenco. Just like me. I don't understand flamenco and I see someone not understanding it and trying to emulate when I see and hear one.
This is one of the first videos that were available online when u search for flamenco, i used to laugh on his playing but now I truly admire and appreciate it, its not easy to play clean notes and just to creat music and melody itself is a great thing. Thank you for teaching me to be humble .
I love the quality of the recording; it's right up there with the best of 'em- I can see the 2 mic's in front of the guitar ( which must a high end instrument with seasoned tonal woods- ) The room's natural acoustics also contribute to the overall decadent tone from this stellar performance- excellent technique and sonic passion, let's face it- and the end of this piece is superb as well- I think Paul Gilbert should consider doing a World Tour of pure classical compositions
People should get this straight! PG is not a flamenco player at all. Of course e.g. Paco de Lucia who barely didn't do anything else but playing flamenco his entire life, is a lot better doing it. But this is possibly the only piece of flamenco PG ever did. And keeping that in mind, he really did a very good imitation of the sound of this style. And he played absolute flawless and musical. If he would decide to do nothing but flamenco for the next 5 years or so, I bet he would be an amanzing flamenco player.
When I clicked on this knowing it's Paul Gilbert, and never knowing or hearing him play this type of guitar or music I automatically knew it was going to be above and beyond your run of the mill video of this type of music, I wonder why that is?
The fact that even Paul, who is arguebly one of the best guitarists alive, can't just pick up a classical guitar and play flamenco like a professional shows how many levels there are to the instrument. Specialization is necessary!
Rasgueados really sucked, but Paul is forgiven for all eternity since this is not his area. Paul is someone I have highest regard for, his electric guitar playing is bordering with the realm of impossible - so judging him based on inadequate right hand technique and non-existent compás would be unfair, really, specially when he himself so humbly admits that he can't play flamenco... What a character! Theme seems taken from some Malaguena, also had Zambra-like and classical guitar elements. Would be awesome if he persisted in further exploration into guitar world and learned how to utilise his right hand fingers, wrist and specific right hand techniques in flamenco way. Given that he'd had his fingernail grown to be able to create flamenco tone as well. With his sense for precision and musical genius, I believe it would not take long for him to achieve very high skill level. For those who have no idea about contemporary flamenco please search names such as Jose Manuel Leon, Gerardo Nunez, Diego del Morao, Vicente Amigo etc.. - you will be amazed how many hidden dimensions of expression and dexterity could exist within trully well utilized flamenco right hand.. PAUL IS GENIUS, ANYWAY.
His attempt at playing the style is quite good. He has some of the vocabulary and the piece has many of the elements from Flamenco. Jose Manuel Leon, Gerardo Nunez, Diego del Morao, Vicente Amigo are masters. But Paul blows away most of the Nuevo Flamenco players who peddle that New Age stuff. He could really develop into a great Flamenco player if he wanted to.
I have checked him out extensively. I enjoy some of his work. Like I said, I think there may be other guitarists that are technically greater but in my opinion, PG is the best. Plus, the man taught Buckethead, if that counts for anything.
***** feel free to fact check this, but Buckethead took lessons from Paul Gilbert. Its a matter of opinion anyway. There are people who think jimmy page and kirk hammet are the greatest in the world. I would say Marty Friedman.

Don't quit playing , technique and dexterity isn't everything as long as your creative , as good as Paul is , he does lack a little in the creativity department , although he obviously makes up for in technical ways , but like I said that's not everything you can aspire for
I too wish I had Paul's inability to play flamenco. If that's his inability to play one? Imagine what he could do if he really tried. I wish I sucked like that.
I think he did pretty good for a thrash metal guitarist. It's like the Flamenco guys trying to shred. Props for trying at least and branching out. So many haters.

Everything Paul Gilbert plays is incredible.
So, this is Paul Gilbert doing something he is totally incapable of...
Gilbert is a master with the electric, but this is really terrible, almost painful to watch.
Walter Smetak Gilbert alreay discussed this disclaimer.

Bruh half as well
Being half as good as paul gilbert means being as good as kirk hammett and slash combined
Totally agree, would love to see half of these commentators play like this. Its his interpretation, either way a beautiful piece.
if they went to the woodshed they would just build another soapbox.
