Even in the first game I don't remember struggling so much, probably because of all the foreground objects that conceal money.
Weird little interaction to keep in mind in case you get a camera. While the camera will kill most flying creatures like bats, *don't* use it against the golden scarabs. Taking their picture will actually collect them instead of killing them.
Helpful, this achievement is a goddamn nightmare. For the free shotgun before Tiamat, place a bomb on the elevator going down to Tusk's palace entrance and the bodyguard will always die. I’ve been using the strategy of roping the shopkeeper on 1-2/3. He drops the shotgun so you can pick it up and have just enough time to leave with all the items. If there’s a jetpack, make sure to pick it up first so it auto equips.
I personally found Spelunky 2 to be much easier to perform a no gold run compared to the first one, it was easier to spot the gold and in the first one I was forced to deal with jungle tree gold and couldn’t steal from a shop keeper unless I wanted to get hunted the whole game
The metal shield is really good for no gold, the trick I used before giving up because Derek yu hates me is: 1. get a shield from 1-2/1-3 2. get past Olmec by skipping him with bombs 3. steal a shotgun, yes the free one 4. beat Tiamat note: don't get spelunked edit: get the udjat eye too if you can
I really tried to like the shield, since it is a lot easier to get your hands on than in the first game(where it was a unique item obtained from the rampaging black knight in the fortress). Pretty much all my experiences have led me to question its usefulness. It pushes/crushes gold from the front (so naturally you would think it's perfect for the no gold run, but I've had more luck and got further without it than with it), except sometimes it doesn't, I've had 1-2 times I tried to crush gold and it teleported it behind me instead, having me pick it up, and if gold comes flying from above, tough luck, at least with bare hands you can whip flying stuff and maybe save yourself. It repels projectiles from the front, except sometimes it doesn't (I've been shot more than 2 times while holding my shield towards a shopkeeper, there's a certain angle at the head where you're not protected and bullets go through, stunning/killing you. Crushing enemies is fun, except for enemies that drop money/gems when killed, they all too often launch the money/gems upwards when they die, highly likely to then land on your head. You need to take extreme care when bombing, as crushing a bomb via perhaps placing it while holding the shield against a wall will result in death. Since people rely a lot on muscle memory in this game, it really throws you off to have to rethink every single one of your bomb placements. And for runs that don't concern avoiding money, apart from the fun gimmick of crushing mobs into walls, I don't see why I'd ever use it. I think even web gun is more useful, even if it's memed to hell and back as a garbage item, at least web gun can get shopkeepers/dangerous mobs permanently stuck in it. Sure, I'd never buy a webgun from a shop, but if I found it in a crate/crust somewhere, and I didn't need to carry some other important item, then maybe I'd consider taking it, vs a shield, I wouldn't pick that up for fear of blowing myself up accidentally.
Just finished this, being my last achievement, giving me 100% on my file some more tips, make sure to do the other strat for olmec where you walk completely under him onto the other side and it takes 2 stomps to break a layer. this way if there's gold in the corner you can just not walk into the corner and keep going. also be suuuper careful in tide pool, make sure to really look at your path before you go, take your time. for volcana almost never jump on a robot unless needed, they mess u up a ton. you can also kill the beetles in dark levels or back layers without picking them up. i'd also always go for the pet if you can, until like ice caves or maybe even tide pool, where it's way better to just keep your shotgun on you and not risk it. yeah getting a shotgun is super super good too, so try and get one before tide pool. also just try and get to the exit really, ur not gonna be getting too many items so just try and leave. no hired hands too!

I've been attempting this challenge for three weeks now. And I noticed myself getting better and better at survival. My strategy for this run is getting the udjat eye to see more dangers in the walls and giving yang his turkeys. Grab the key, bring it to volcano for Van Horsing. Then go into vlads castle, which unfortunately removes the udjat eye. But gains me vlads cape and the crown. The cape makes traveling much safer and the crown allows taking Excalibur, which I intend to use to kill Tiamat with. But tide pool-3 was the furthest I got yet. One of the inky bois was guarding the lever to get down further, so I bombed, which somehow sent an aimbot gem at me
This one really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I hated the Millionaire one much more, the runs took forever because of the grind, and failing them was much more painful. I feel most of the stuff mentioned here was rather obvious, besides some tips in certain situations maybe. So let me add a few more things. To anyone doing this, I would definitely ALWAYS rob the shopkeeper in 1-2 or 1-3, even if it's not a shit ton of bombs, just make sure not to kill them. Like it was said with the Kali Altar, you're not going to be getting items any other way unless you're lucky or do sacrifices, so anything is good. Especially if it's movement related or a compass, Furthermore, always get the Udjat Eye if you can, alternatively the Spectacles, so if you use bombs or maybe even a pickaxe, you know where gems will be hidden, so you can avoid them or be prepared for them. Also, Volcana was mentioned, but I think it should be elaborated on that it's generally the superior choice. The Jungle loves hiding gold behind textures, more than the Tide Pool, should be obvious, but going to mention it regardless. Last but not least, the shotgun is weird. If you want gold or gems to go away, always use your whip. A shotgun blast might sometimes shoot the gold towards you, rather than away from you. Had one or two runs end to that. Also... while I have done these runs normally and had many nearly successful attempts end in 6--3, I did end up having my successful run with a teleporter. I would definitely recommend that item too. Although a lot of things I did were risky, so I would say it's best if you can use it in combination with a jetpack or hoverpack, which I didn't have.

Even though it’s rare if you manage to find a push crate to push inside the store you can trap him in his corner and rob everything make sure that you move the items on the other side of the crate
Don’t carry torches. jetpack and teleporter or jetpack, mattock, and specs are the best 2 combos, and be extra careful in tide pools. Also shortcuts don’t work for the achievement, I’ve tried
Get Turkey's and bring them out of the Dwellings for easy double jump and whip. If you get a shotgun from a shopkeeper and a Turkey you can both have a whip if you crouch (the Turkey's head) that you can knock gold over with and a shotgun.
Step one: don't try to speedrun. If you are not speedruning. Take your time and don't try to whip every arrow trap you see. Also don't try to method at 1:42 it usually more risky. This is mostly used in speedruns.
