If you go on a really long cruise, with multiple days on the ocean, sometimes you just want to reach for the familiar. Other times, like say if your near the tail end of a long trip, you've done most of the stuff on the ship.
Nice boat, but what the hell is the point of spending your cruise playing on your phone, tablet or xbox when you can do these things at home for free???...
Connectivity is one of the reasons many people avoid going on cruises. Wifi is almost always offered in resorts, it's something the cruise industry really needs if it wants to capture a younger audience. As to your argument regarding people playing Xbox while on vacation, a lot of resorts offer entertainment lounges that have consoles as well. In my experience, people are more likely to play video games at resorts than on cruises.
Jarl, It is like the differences between jerking off and going to the brothel; both are nice but the latter, although not free, gets you to go out once in a while and enjoy social encounteers :) peace
Nobody actually does that (based on my experience on Oasis of the seas last year), you would be missing out on soooooooo many things that you mostly wont ever have the opportunity to experience again!
The Titanic is an ocean liner built to sail across a stormy and wavy ocean at more that 30 knots, a cruise ship, like the Quantum, is built to cruise through a calm and warm sea with occasional rough seas at no more than 23 knots. The Titanic was not at all technologically advanced, she was not the fastest or the most efficient, she was just happened to be the largest passenger ship built at the time.
Jane Abraham Yes, go on a normal cruise that goes to many different countries and see amazing things, you will NOT care about WiFi and stupid holograms.
Expect to spend about 1500 on the cruise itself, then you have transport to the ship and back to home. So usually you wanna add about 500-800 on travel, fees, and basic needs when factoring it in. You can do a two week cruise for like 2.5k or a single week for about 1.5-1.7k. Really not bad.
I am a musician who works with RCCL and I did the take out of this ship, from Bremerhaven Germany, to Port Liberty, USA. She is by far my favourite ship...I miss her.
+Lukas Schmidt Yeah but robots are designed by engineers and computer scientists. These robots might be stealing work to people that doesn't have any sort of degree.
I am diamond member of RCCL so I've tried many of their ships, but Quantum has to date been the greatest experience you will never finish to experience things on the ship. It is an experience in itself, try it, you will be caught by it.
This is pretty cool but when the old guy said "looking at an orchestra that isn't there" all I could think about was "now that's one job thats gone and never coming back". Thank god I'm an engineer and not an entertainer/artist/dancer
Everyone using a phone or tablet would be using the Internet simultaneously ... push notifications like 'this' multiplied by the number of Apps constantly pulling data.

És tényleg!!! Akár egy világvárosban! Fantasztikus!!!
It is, actually. Royal Caribbean actually invested in launching a SATELLITE TO BEAM THE WIFI ONTO THE SHIPS to solve the internet issue. One satellite launch costs $100 million on average, and each satellite can serve up to 30 ships if i recall correctly... And they're planning to launch more :3
Though this has robot bars and skydiving pits, the Norwegion Breakaway has an ALL ICE BAR, ZIPLINING, Rope walking, GOLF!Its all about the cruise, no matter what cruise you go on, it all has different fun features. I am the biggest fan of cruises, they are THE BEST vacation time ever, and i have been to ALOT of places, but rather than going to the grand canyon again or niagra falls again or hawaii again, i keep going on cruises again. 7 times, 2 more times this summer! If you havent gone on one before, your missing out. It is a must
I absolutely do love them pushing the limits in what you can put on a ship but it would be a much more powerful video for the Quantum of the Seas if they showed what technological advancements they've made in the Emergency department. Such as when all those fancy electronics don't work cause the ship suddenly went dead in the water. How fast can you get everyone off? Did you create some hidden chambers with speedboats? In other words, what new technology comes into play when shit hits the fan? I would be a lot more willing to buy a ticket if I knew.
my favorite part of a cruise is just looking out to the vast ocean at night. hearing the waves crushing. and you actually see the stars. you feel small again. =]
OMFG the purpose of this ship is for WIFI!?!?!?! What's the point of going on a fun cruise if all your going to do is play on your phone, play Xbox, watching television .etc
Hooperman People like me urge to watch UA-cam during night hours after a long day on the cruise!! I don't think people should spend more on just Internet, personally internet is a gimmick for cruises.
Hooperman, mate seriously do you feckin expect people to be on waterslides for the entire day mate like it’s not that hard to understand that at some physical point in time SOMEBODY is going to need WiFi. Now be honest with me here. Do you bring your phone/tablet/whatever on holiday? I thought so.
People are criticizing this ship and dont realize that how much technology has evolved. Compare how this technology compares to technology 50 years ago. We already have smart phones with touch screens, robots, new ways of transportation, entertainment, etc. Its really interesting how the world changes without realizing it.
A.J. Deutsch, mate, seriously? 50 years ago, any airline ticket was about the same price as some of the most expensive first-class aeroplane seats are today. Not only has the price gone down on many means of transport, they have been improved in many different ways, such as a bigger capacity (size), faster speed, longer range of travel, etc.
what happens if any ship is hit by an EMP? Or a plane? Submarine? Skyscraper? We're in a technological world and we'd be screwed pretty much anywhere during an EMP
I volunteer on a small 126 ft steam vessel. Everything important on it works without electricity. You'd have no lights, no communications and no refrigeration, but the whole propulsion system and steering gear is all steam driven so it would be the only thing on the water that starts and runs without electricity and computers. You'd even have running water and flushing toilets, hot showers without electricity. The generator is actually powered by a steam engine which wouldn't give a toss about an EMP I just don't know if the control circuit for the alternator would still work after an EMP.
Typing this out from this cruise ship right now! It's actually not THAT expensive considering food and a place to stay is included. We've been on numerous cruises and I can say being connected is awesome. Fast enough to stream UA-cam in HD. Our cruise is about 3 weeks through Europe. There's a lot to do on the ship and excited for some of the excursions. For people saying that this isn't traveling, I would say to each his own. I personally don't think you can soak up a country's culture unless you live there for over a month. A few days won't cut it either. Personally I enjoy being able to work when I feel like it and just relax when I feel like doing that. Lots of options here. Lots of old people though. We need some younger people. My wife and I are the only ones besides staff that are 20-30 years old. :-)
Love everything except for the onboard Wi-Fi. One of the best things about a cruise is that it’s a great reason to be completely out of contact except when you get to Port.
Not really... there is a cruise line called Carnival Cruises that would cause confusion amongst people. Plus, this ship is all about the future and new and exciting technology... hence "quantum", which evokes more of a feeling of that.
About the future?? Are you kidding me? Why because it has robot bartenders? How ling before those break down?? Computer operated. Wont be long! Dogem Cars? Same thing. TV screens that move like the robots? Again how long before all this stuff breaks down. Its going to cost them more money to keep this ship afloat! Also the Skydiving? You dont see a Carnival theme here? Hmmmmm....maybe you should go to your County Fair and get back to me. But Thanks for playing!
Dude, seriously... what? Yes... the future. Robot bar tenders aren't exactly commonplace are they. Neither is a sky crane above the boat, or skydiving at sea. Sure they probably will break down from time to time, but then so do trains, and cars, and rollercoasters, and vending machines. ANYTHING that has been engineered is likely to break down at some point. And no, it won't cost them "more money to keep this ship afloat" because if one thing does breakdown, hey they get an engineer in to fix it. What the hell is your problem? What the fuck county fairs do you have where you can skydive? Again, and I think everyone will agree with me here... the focus is on futuristic stuff: HD moving screens and projections, innovations, robots, sleekness, energy efficient etc. Hence "Quantum". If the boat was all glittery, and red and white, and had merry go rounds and helter skelters all over the place, then sure... call it a fucking carnival ship.
The Grump 101 Negative. It is not where the ship sails from, nor is it where the owner of ship resides. The laws that apply in international waters depend only on the registry of the vessel. A ship can be registered in a country and never see a port in that country. That is why most commercial ships sail under "flags of convenience" such as Panama, Liberia, Marshall Islands, Malta, etc. It is important to note that a particular cruise line (notably Carnival) may choose to register its ships in different countries, so the laws will be different depending on which ship you choose. Around 90% of all commercial marine vessels, including passenger ships, calling on US ports are under foreign flags. There's only one big sea cruise ship registered in USA - MS Pride of America, sailing solely out of Hawaii. However, it is not the laws of the country of registry that you need to worry about. It is the cruise ship contract. Different cruise lines will stipulate minimum drinking age as a matter of corporate policy, setting more restrictive drinking ages than necessary limited by law. For example, Carnival cruise lines operates ships registered in Panama (drinking age 18) and Bahamas (drinking age 18), but the Carnival cruise line corporate policy stipulates that only passengers above the age of 21 may drink alcoholic beverages while on board. The majority of the large cruise lines have set the drinking age at 21, although there are a few exceptions. The flags of convenience are not chosen to best serve the customer, they are chosen to maximize corporate profits and minimize corporate liability.
Kyle The Crusader, do you know what “Allahu Akbar” means? It means “God is Great.” You should stop associating the phrase “Allahu Akbar” with bombs and terror. Associate it with peace and celebration.
Barmans and barwaiters, said good bye to your jobs, and probably others services also, because, including, entertaiment because it will be replace by holograms, dancers, musicians, etc.
+Héctor Fabian De La Barra Do you even realize how expensive it is to develop & maintain a robotic system? Engineers, Technicians & Programmers aren't cheap buddy. Their is no way your local BurgerKing can afford to fire half of it's restaurant staff so multimillion dollar robotic systems can make your food. Their's a reason why robotics have STAYED only in the manufacturing industry because that's the only case where it's profitable. Until the day when it becomes practical... You have vending machines.
Héctor Fabian De La Barra, you forgot to factor in the fact that other jobs will be created to service said robots. Also I highly doubt they will ALL be replaced mate. Like, I don’t say this often, but that was a rather stupid comment.
This is the most stupid thing I've heard of for a long time. This is spending money and wasting resources and time just for the sake of doing so. This isn't going to make anyones life better, easier or more enjoyable.
Actually its making everyone who vacations in the ships life much easier and enjoyable. Your either really weird, really stupid, a troll, or all three.
Still wouldn't go. As part of this "younger generation" that they're trying to capture no amount of connectivity is going to make me go on a cruise. There's some interesting technology on board but it's still touristy as hell and would still be full of old people. This is not a good way to travel. Where's the sense of discovery and exploration? Where are the risks, the last moment decisions that dramatically alter your experience? The amazing people (who are out there in the world, not on cruise ships) who expand your mind and widen your perspective of the world?
week long cruises stop at 3 destinations where you can get off and do stuff. I went zip-lining and swam with sting-rays on a cruise vacation. If you want to do more, then just go do it, no one is making you go on a cruise.
Diego Jorge That's still not good enough honestly. When I've travelled around on my own you see the cruise ships come in during the morning and leave before sunset. That's such an artificial, generic and cookie cutter way to travel, where you're basically a sheep following a shepherd ("You only have X time before you have to come back), rather than an independent human being forging their own path. I know no one is making me go on a cruise, but the fact that they're trying to target my age group is why I'm voicing my opinion.
Wow this looks....... Extremely.... Expensive
turns out tickets are 1000$
Re Flights to Europe from NA are regularly around that price and some families go the cruise route over the flight and hotel route.
Ibraheem Productions
it's cool tho"
but when you have money , that's one of the best places to spend on :D
Ibraheem Productions ew
Woah dude I can't wait to never be able to experience this in my life
Lmao. 7 night cruises are like 500 bucks. Save up and go.
They focus on wifi i'd be on the xbox all the time

wow the future is now
Who the fuck would spend their time playing a Xbox one on a futuristic cruise ship?
Loads of people that don't fight over fucking plastic boxes
Rohan Saini No like why would you play video games in general when you are paying to be on this cruise?
TheSimplyJJP idk some freaks can't live without gaming
maybe teenage kids while their parents go party?
If you go on a really long cruise, with multiple days on the ocean, sometimes you just want to reach for the familiar. Other times, like say if your near the tail end of a long trip, you've done most of the stuff on the ship.
Reminds me of the Axiom from WALL-E
Ted Chaffman yes! 😍
5:05 "these same kind of robots are the ones that design the cars in factories". You mean *Assemble*.
Ddyracer you mean 5:02
I mean _pedantic_
Thought the same thing
This
nah fam those robots design the cars, the humans assemble things
Imagine if this was a small space ship.
Small ship with a bunch of shit in it.
Less walking, don't see why people would mind.
it looks like that space ship form wall-e, except stuck on water.
danny1111105 omfg thats what I was thinking
Robert Oortwijn death space
JakeXLX he is saying "small space ship" dumbass

totally. this whole time i was thinking PORTAL 2!!!
or vimeo.com/75260457 if its not the same guys
Yeah, but is it unsinkable?
Will it blend that is the question
+Midnight Dust hahahaha damn that was funny😂😂😂
The actual question is can you microwave this though?
KatyabolMC no
KatyabolMC crash it into an ice burg and find out xD
McDonald's has free wifi and a dollar menu. Does this fancy ship have one of those?
Audrey M but I want the free wifi lolol
Aaron Bear The whole ship has wifi
the guy answered that in the video man, its not - you book it
Cruise ship food is free it is included in the price
Does McDonalds float and end up somewhere different every day?
Remember when Titanic was called "The most technologically advanced cruise ship in the world"?
+Sir. Boom TBH, no I really dont.
The Titanic WAS, not is since it sunk.
they said that even God couldn't take down the titanic....and he showed them
+Shabab Choudhury He* :-)
Absolutely gorgeous! This looks like so much fun!
*This looks nice and all, but i go on a cruise to visit 12 different countries, see archaeological sites and to relax and unwind from the world*
That's what. I want cruise do you recommend
Jane Abraham Yes, go on a normal cruise that goes to many different countries and see amazing things, you will NOT care about WiFi and stupid holograms.
+Nathan Jones But that 600mbps internet tho, damn.
Edward Elric that's between everyone tho.
This ship could use variable geometry natural gas turbines or nuclear power instead of ancient diesel technology.
Wow, i'm looking this up and the tickets go for around 1000$! I expected them to be several times higher.
Yeah, except you probably have to pay for everything, and since you're stuck on a ship, they can gouge you pretty handsomely.
Food is included, drinks you have to buy.
I’ve seen some for $600 now!
This reminded me of the Axiom Starliner from Wall-e.
do u know what i hate.
its when there are too many fun things to do and all the activites will DEFINITELY HAVE A LINE
thats why you stay onboard when the ship arrives at an island. You will basically have the entire ship to yourself
Thats actually not true. You book a time when you want to do it and you go there the time that you booked without waiting
That looks like a perfect location for a social-experiment horror movie.
All the surveillance cameras, all the data-collection.. could be interesting.
Not gonna lie, this gave me a major nerdgasm
Back in the good old times when David was still at The Verge.
Agreed, I miss David and Top Shelf and the Vergecast and etc.
*MOST ADVANCED SHIP*
Still serves beverages in Plastic Cups
Those robots do not "design cars" in factories....they BUILD them.
Love the Robot bartenders :)
#RaceAgainstTheMachine.

Robot bar ? More robots stealing our jobs lol
And make new ones because robots dont design them self.
probably created more jobs
Samuel kings they took our jobs
+DIGOTRON DEY TURK AWR JOBS!
+Lukas Schmidt Yeah but robots are designed by engineers and computer scientists. These robots might be stealing work to people that doesn't have any sort of degree.
This is why I love the Verge.
Its like the panels in a test chamber in portal
I am diamond member of RCCL so I've tried many of their ships, but Quantum has to date been the greatest experience you will never finish to experience things on the ship. It is an experience in itself, try it, you will be caught by it.
Kind of reminds me of the space ships from the movie Walle
The coolest part about this to me is that it really represents a microcosm of the way everything will in 10 or 20 years from now
This is pretty cool but when the old guy said "looking at an orchestra that isn't there" all I could think about was "now that's one job thats gone and never coming back". Thank god I'm an engineer and not an entertainer/artist/dancer
uh, isn't that what a lot of companies have spent a lot of time doing since forever?
one of the best ships in the wrold!!!
600 Mbps for a home is fantastic, but divided into a couple thousand people .. ehh that's pretty horrible.
Not everyone would be using it all at a time.
Everyone using a phone or tablet would be using the Internet simultaneously ... push notifications like 'this' multiplied by the number of Apps constantly pulling data.

Great look at the new futuristic cruise ship the Quantum of the Seas.
I’m going on this ship for 2 weeks in Italy and I’m so excited.
Technology... I love it
I liked that reference to Tom Cruise's "Cocktail" :P
Those robots really nail it.
so in a nutshell, the hardest part of building this ship was the... wifi?... WTF
It is, actually.

All of those touch based displays on that cruise ship brings one word to mind, Norovirus...
All that space and not one strip club, what a waste.
The Fuck?
Lmao
bukueOner they are not a party line like carnival they want to attract faimlies
Michaela Hutto carnival is family cruise line too .......
By far, one of the best Top Shelf episodes I have ever seen. Great job!
Hmm... The tickets are probably $1,000,000.
Per person
Per hour
+Edawesome ITS JUST ABOUT $800
You will need a small loan of a million dollars
EOC no I just got off we spent 4,500 dollars for a week 5 people total!
you are riding on the boat, not buying it.
If you buy it a year in advance it's much cheaper
Though this has robot bars and skydiving pits, the Norwegion Breakaway has an ALL ICE BAR, ZIPLINING, Rope walking, GOLF!Its all about the cruise, no matter what cruise you go on, it all has different fun features. RBuckminsterFuller totally understand you, vis a vis
my favorite part of a cruise is just looking out to the vast ocean at night. hearing the waves crushing. and you actually see the stars. you feel small again. =]
And... A trip from Virginia to Florida would cost $1,000,000,000
if you decide to take the trip....and buy the whole shipping company while you're at it
Literally can go for 600$/person
For a ticket...another thousands $ during vacation on board
Mpetri 2000 hidden costs and fees included in the $600?
i was getting sooo pumped after seeing the snap stories of this
OMFG the purpose of this ship is for WIFI!?!?!?! What's the point of going on a fun cruise if all your going to do is play on your phone, play Xbox, watching television .etc

I haven't got through the video but I'm intrigued by this already.
Can it run minecraft though.
not with custom textures
I am going on this ship this summer...
This is the least liable ship. It depends on electricity and if electricity dies... yeah you get it.
Jeebus. I've been on a few ships but this isn't a vacation, it's a new world where everyone works for you. :O
see i feel like the xbox arcade would be really packed around the one xbox
Bro that is insane. now they just gotta add like light shows and everything. Electricity is going to make the world such an awesome place!!
But... Being disconnected is LITERALLY THE WHOLE POINT AND THE WHOLE SOURCE OF ENJOYMENT ON VACATION
Bruh hell no
Who the hell would have a good time while being offline
@@VitVoz honestly. When I travel, I’d rather 580 no scope newbs in forkknife than see the world.
I was just on Adventure of the Seas and thought it was amazing... but this is something else. damn
I'm going there in 2018 in march
How was it?

Corrosive, boats and ships are the same thing ya feckin idiot
8:01 that's exactly what the SeaWorld Orca show screens do in Florida, it's really cool
lol it kinda looks like a mall but more advance

Re I'm not rich I just got off of it with my family of 5 we only spent $4,500
Michaela Hutto "only"
which means like 800 dollars per person which is less than some flights to europe
800 but that's for transportation, food , and a place to sleep
No, not really, it’s not that Expensive, I’m going

But what laws are applied in international waters? American laws? Drink at 21? German laws? Drink at 16?
Depends on where it sets sail from. From the U.S., it's 21.
The Grump 101
Negative.
Just booked the sister ship Anthem of the Seas in 2 months because of this video. Great job The Verge!
And just got back. 10/10!
Wouldn't be surprised if a couple of Muslims decided to Allah Akbar this ship.
Frögemann Pepe Von Schuürburgenzen the Third H what an idiot
Kyle The Crusader, do you know what “Allahu Akbar” means? It means “God is Great.” You should stop associating the phrase “Allahu Akbar” with bombs and terror. Associate it with peace and celebration.
ⵔⵓⴽⴰⵜⴽⴰⵜ except that doesn’t happen.
i went on this ship when it came out in december 2014 from NY to Nasau , awsome !!
Barmans and barwaiters, said good bye to your jobs, and probably others services also, because, including, entertaiment because it will be replace by holograms, dancers, musicians, etc.
i think very soon they'll replace doctors with robots even lawyers
Did y'all not notice how slow those bar robots were? Like 2 minutes per drink and they can't multitask. I feel very secure in my job....
Musicians and dancers won't be replaced, thats like saying musicians won't get jobs because there's too many UA-cam videos of musicians
I’ve been on the ship and I can say it’s definitely worth the money
Only good because of the Xbox One am I right? Shut up sony ponys btw
+Th3TimTamT3ch Stop being Micro-"*Soft*"

BOW DOWN TO THE PC MASTERRACE
I can't wait to go on this ship! :) Royal Caribbean offers the best cruises.
This is the most stupid thing I've heard of for a long time. This is spending money and wasting resources and time just for the sake of doing so. This isn't going to make anyones life better, easier or more enjoyable.
It seems like the people there are having a pretty good time. Why be such a downer?
Actually its making everyone who vacations in the ships life much easier and enjoyable. Your either really weird, really stupid, a troll, or all three.
Skylitfly They just listed about 5 reasons why this ship is easier and more enjoyable.
+SoN1NjA Definitely liberal.
Umm, it's a private cruise company. What would they spend their money on other than building/maintaining ships
I honestly never seen the appeal to cruses but this one actually looks like fun.
DarKnightofCydonia lol honestly, if I was travelling on this ship, I wouldn't even care about getting off. But maybe that's just me.
DarKnightofCydonia Some people just want to chill and enjoy things.
Not everyone is looking for a major life changing adventure.
It's for money
This is really amazing. Really excited for that bar technology. It could be applied to a lot of sectors!
That is unbelievable.
Symphony of the Seas outclassed this one boys
wow he looks so happy to be there at 9:34
It's my favorite ship I've been on it 3 times.
This was docked in Port of Tauranga few weeks back, impressive ship
Awesome video!
There are advantages to always being connected & disadvantages. It is nice to be able to choose on/off.
You know you're getting old when this all looks a bit hellish.
Can't wait to go on this!
the best part is the running track though
From experience, no one makes ships like RC. They're the best at experience.
this is what cruise should be catering to now trying to make them fun and entertaining for younger people I'm in
