Many cruise ships are registered to the Bahamas or Panama to get the international and labour laws loophole. There are no illegal immigrants and almost no labour laws either since it is not a registered US ship.
I used to be a cruise agent, responsible for the worker on the ships and their immigration documents, communication with authorities, logistics, etc. It was a fancy position, but legit one of the worst jobs I have ever had, it was miserable. This industry is borderline modern-day slavery and gluteny, as well as extreme ecological hazard. It is quite an amazing experience to be in one of those ships, but at the same time it feels almost nightmarish.
@@Romme_ slave as the reason there’s no USA ships. They are tittle in sorta poor countries where the wage it’s really low. So they hire people from those countries
You're right. It would be better if people had no opportunities at all to work. I'm sure they would rather remain the poorest people on earth. Much better life
@@ctlt-pg4tm lmao, yeah much better to have people working on a ship serving rich people destroying the enviroment than having them not able to work on those ships, delusional af
One has to be really strong in the head to not break down doing the same job over and over again for long hours in tight spaces. Especially those in the lower decks, like the butchers, where there are no windows.
I used to work a assistant waiter on one of these. What they don’t tell you is that the crew gets the most disgusting food possible so much so, that after the dinner is over and the guests leave we then use to collect untouched meals from guests in order to eat something normal for change, because crew dining are has to feed over 84 nationalities that work there and of course there is no system one taste fits all. Also, the reason why they are in advance as far as cheap labor goes is directly connected due to the fact that it is not registered under the USA flag so therefore they don’t have to pay regular salaries and we as a crew therefore never had a day off unless you achieve some miracle and get named worker (slave) of the week and that js your prize. They said your contract lasts for 4 months without a day off, that is false, unless you are captain or some high rank worker the length of the contract last from 6 to 8 months non stop. You eat shit food if you are not connected with the chef or if you don’t have someone to bring you left overs, you work for 6-8 months and you get month and a half to be home, and you are non stop tired. The reason why they have workers in the first place is because all of them almost come from poorest countries like balkan, afrika, India, Philippines, Indonesia etc. and their only income comes from the ship so if they don’t oblige they will get fired and believe me, they have done a lot that they didn’t have to do. Also, many of the workers can’t be hired to be the “face of the company” because they are too dark skinned to be in front of the guests but they of course don’t tell them that when they are hiring, they just say “the only position available is in the galley, take it or leave it”. There is a lot more that I could write this is just the tip of the iceberg, luckily I don’t do it anymore i have found a way to earn a lot more on the land compared to 1200$ that i as an assistant waiter was making there. It’s good to know that next time you leave a tip to someone, just remember there are a lot of people back there that quite literally don’t get to see the light of the day for 6 months due to combination of tiredness and bad shifts, and those people are the ones who should be awarded the most.
There is also no such thing as “retirement plan” that they have mentioned, again maybe there is for high ranking officers but regular crew there isn’t any. Let me also add that while the crew is not working they are located in rooms that are just big enough to enter and go to bed, which again is shared and made for two people so no privacy there. The real reason why many of the crew starts to work on cruise ship to begin with - at least from my experience - is to get a chance to sail in Usa or Canada so they could run towards better opportunities on land because no one can get Visa from those countries unless they are really, really lucky. Once the ship sails into the port, most of them gets a clearing that they get go out and that is their only chance of making it in life.

I work at a restaurant as a chef and our head chef has been on one of those during his early career years. I love to listen to his stories from the ship, it is fascinating that they produced so much in very limited spaces. And cruise ship kitchen staff work 14 hour days... not 10-12

7 day cruise, 7500 passengers, average cost of $1500(you have to factor in balconies, suites, variable pricing) is $11,250,000 in gross revenue for rooms. Now take into account royal Caribbean says customers spend roughly $100 per day as well. That’s another 5mil right there. If they’re spending 7-8mil per cruise to operate, they’re still making 5-6mil per cruise easily after any taxes and port fees easily. I’m strongly believe I’m underestimating how much net profit they’re making. I’m sure it’s much more
@@purpjones1033if we assume the math there is roughly accurate it would only be 4 years to recoup the initial cost of the ship. it’ll run for far longer than that (20+ years) based on all that, you’d profit something like $4 billion over a conservative 20 year lifespan for the ship
I have the most upmost respect for the cruise staff and crew. They do an incredible job making sure your voyage is seamless. All that goes on behind the scene simply mesmerizes me. I am definitely Royal Loyal.
And they get paid nearly nothing. They work months straight at a time before going back home. The passenger gratuity help pays for their salary. But pretty much they're living on the boat for free with room and board.
Much respect to all the workers. I am sure they are all overworked and underpaid. Regardless, the workers are very kind and always smile while they work hard to provide to their families abroad. So many moving parts and it’s wild how massive these ships have gotten to handle so many guests.
Incredible that this comment has lasted an entire month without telling a temporarily embarrassed millionaire telling you off for implying that people are underpaid
You want wages to go up then so do costs of cruise and food. Cue McDonald's. Good luck getting a value meal for less than 10 bucks now that thanks to all you whiny complainers. Nobody is forcing them to work there
Even though the workers are overworked, underpaid, and have low working conditions, I appreciate their hardwork that sails thousands of passengers across the sea smoothly.

I am always busy, checking all the lights to make sure nothing is burned out, making sure the color gels on the lights were still in good condition, checking video projectors and lasers, checking Co2 tanks used to create low fog on the stage. Preping the Pyro and counting it every week to report the count to the safety officer. One of my emergency duties is to station myself need Rib 19 Port side, there is a emergency exit there that I would guide people to. I very much like that while these were made into independent videos a while back, when you compiled them, you changed the order of footage, used new stuff we hadn't seen before, and made a new voiceover, instead of just stringing the videos like most channels do. We like to see that extra effort, makes the video very entertaining.
I recognized so many of the lines, and audio clips, and some of the video footage, but I agree with this- even hearing them again wasn't grating because the new video had so much new stuff.

Same here. Engineering marvels, sailing under flags of convenience so they can have the cheapest possible crew expense. IDK, my overall impression of these monsters is, "Wow.... (pause) YUCK!". I mean, why even build a ship? Why not just build another hotel in Vegas?
@@shaggybreeks There are many good answers to that question e.g., you cannot move a hotel or restaurant, but you can send a cruise-hotel with multiple restaurants all around the world. Cruise-ships are bigger than most hotels and restaurants on land and offer more products, services, amenities, options, and excursions than the ones on land. There are many more categories of guest-room on a large modern cruise-ship than there are in any hotel. E.g., a hotel tends to be in one category or another and every room is priced accordingly, but a cruise-ship allows luxury-classes, mid-range classes, and low-price categories all in one moving hotel-island.

My brother worked on a cruise ship and he said if a guest made a complaint about a staff they were gone. No questions asked. They get rid of you for the slightest infraction sometimes.
The wildest part is that I was ON that cruise where 50 people tested positive, and we never heard a peep about it until we had gotten off the ship after the week was over.

I think that the sheer size and separate sections and amenities for suites mean that you would not even see many of the guests that are paying for premium classes of guestrooms. I can also say from experience that there are badly behaved average people and some friendly and generous wealthy ones. Not least of all because most high-income households nowadays earned their way, rather than inherited it. You would not even know how wealthy many people are. The ginormous amount of food x 6,000 passengers plus a couple hundred staff x 3 meals + snacks x 7 days cruise x the number of cruise ships globally x how many weeks per cruise season = mindblowing. Now add in the food production rates being diminished by global drought. At some point, prices are going to rise rapidly, as well as competition for food supplies.
Except the ship is actually flagged in the Bahamas. The point is still relevant. An US registered ship is much more expensive. There is currently only one major cruise ship sailing under a US Flag, The Pride of America, owned by NCL. It cruises the Hawaiian islands and is not a cheap cruise. However, to sail inter island in Hawaii with a foreign flagged vessel would require a voyage to a foreign port on every cruise. This would take several days and thousands of miles of useless travel. So the Hawaiian market is the one place that it pays to have one, and only one, US flagged cruise ship.
Just let it sink in, the main dining hall serve 6000 people everyday. I would be very interested in understand how the waiters manage that amount of table on 3 decks, it must be crazy

How these cruise ships run is totally beyond me. I'm actually spending all of this year living 'back to back' on cruise ships, and it really blows my mind every time I get onboard how efficient the whole operation is!

I-95 is a reference to the Interstate stretching from the Canadian border at Maine to Miami, FL. An important link across the Eastern Seaboard, like how this is an important link to keep the ship going. So it's fitting that this cruise begins in Miami which is the southern end of I-95. When it comes to cruise ships, we have the 만경봉 (Mangyeongbong) 92. Built in 1992 (hence 92) using funds from the Chongryon (Koreans affiliated with the DPRK in Japan), it was once used to transport cargo as well as the Chongryon themselves between Japan and the DPRK. But after it was banned from Japanese waters in 2006, it became a cruise ship for Chinese tourists from Rason to Mount Kumgang. It was last used in 2018 to carry a 140-person strong orchestra to Mukho in the south for the 2018 Winter Olympics
And we call it other things in other countries. For example, in Australia, the equivalent highway is called the M1- so, on Australian based ships, we say “down off the M1”
I know I'm commenting on an older video but I've noticed a discrepancy between what the video says about no vacation days and what I found in idle conversation and observation onboard the Wonder of the Seas. While you can't obviously go where you want on a day off crew members do get shore leave and onboard time off (with some restrictions as you see performers have privileges) one tidbit told to me by a photographer is often new things like upcoming menu items and experiences are often given a trial run on crew before being given the go ahead for passengers so a cruise worker does get some benefits from the position. That said potentially you get better treatment if you are passenger facing and being totally below decks has you screwed.

I worked on a cruise ship in housekeeping department. During embarkation is a nightmare. 20 cabins for 4 hours and it needs to be ready and after that you need to meet the passengers and attend all emergency drills. I was on Symphony of the Seas for thanksgiving break and when I was eating I saw this brown liquid in the ocean right next to the cruise. More kept appearing about like every 5 seconds. I suspected it was waste. I then asked a waiter and he said it was food waste. This video said they don't put anything into the ocean but I guess that's wrong.
If it cost $1M to maintain then I assume it will be generating $1M+ a day. Else, why would it cruise in the first place for free? The cruise ship is built for business and no businesses run to loss at any cost.
You would have to fill 2,500 of the 2700 rooms with four guests in each room each paying $100 to break even at 1 million. There are some restaurants and features that require extra fees and activities that combined with the casino and Mall must be where the cruise ship makes their profit

They said it a few times, but as a frequent cruiser, I can tell you that the ship does not rock and bob in the waves like everyone thinks. You cannot feel the ship move at all unless it's really rough seas. That's what everyone is afraid of, but it's just not true. Also it's not as cramped with people as people think
They are definitely overworked. Eleven months without One day off (unless her use of "vacation day" means something else). However, even at 17-20 thousand dollars per year, it is a lot more than some of these employees would make in their countries and can send much of their earnings to their families. Package includes free room, drink and food, not a bad deal. But if they feel overworked, it can cause stress, anxiety and depression, so maybe they shouldn't stick around too long.
I thought the engineering of the cruise ship itself was a marvel turns out it's the ship's crew. After watching this I've got a newfound respect for these hard workers 🔥
They said in the beginning that It cost a passenger 100 dollars a day and then they said the kitchen prepares 30 000 meals a day (3 meals a day is 10 000 people and 25% of them are are working staff.) So there are 7500 paying passengers at 100 dollars a day, for a total of 750 000 dollars total, per day, for the cruise ship. If it is true that they spend 1 000 000 dollars per day, to run the cruise ship... it sounds like they losing money.
There is also casino on board, many alcohol sales, higher class rooms, suites, special restaurants and activities that cost extra, you can buy your pictures for a very high price, there are stores, tours you can purchase, room service and more! This is where the real money is coming from.

Sounds like shit.

Some days I can’t even hear my alarm because of tiredness. 12 hours a day no day off for 9 months.
Girl we share same stories here when I was working as a waiter in a 4-star hotel.
What was your salary?
the commitment of the crew is admirable
I was on Symphony of the Seas for thanksgiving break and when I was eating I saw this brown liquid in the ocean right next to the cruise. More kept appearing about like every 5 seconds. I suspected it was waste. I then asked a waiter and he said it was food waste. This video said they don't put anything into the ocean but I guess that's wrong.
Yup, so long as you are in international waters, no one can regulate!
I'm sure the fish liked the free food.
Just done one of the cruise trip of royal carribean, appreciate the service, entertainment, food and all of it on the ship!
If it cost $1M to maintain then I assume it will be generating $1M+ a day. Else, why would it cruise in the first place for free? The cruise ship is built for business and no businesses run to loss at any cost.
A cruise ship probably brings in $5M+ each day
You would have to fill 2,500 of the 2700 rooms with four guests in each room each paying $100 to break even at 1 million. There are some restaurants and features that require extra fees and activities that combined with the casino and Mall must be where the cruise ship makes their profit
"and that's why its workers need to be effecient"
let me translate: "will be underpaid and overworked to the max, mostly likely hired from countries with no workers rights or minimum wage"
@@SuperJuiceman11 liquor is a money machine for cruises.
@@maxmustermann-zx9yq Nobody puts a gun to their head and makes them work there. I'm betting these people likely don't have a ton of opportunities for work so the ship is a great option. I couldn't even guess how many applications they likely get from people looking to work on the ship even at the current pay. However, if they decided to up the pay, interest in those jobs would only increase and just make it harder for these people to secure the job due to even more applicants and even further out foreigner applicants.
That fuel consumption really isn’t that bad considering how many folks and how much equipment are being moved that distance, unless there was an error in your conversion to Ford exploder’s
600 transcontinental SUV trips PER DAY though; it's not like 600 SUVs driving the cruise route alongside the ship, which would indeed be pretty impressively efficient
I'm sure the collapsing marine life ecosystems are grateful!
@@drmalex87 Calm down treehugger. Industrial CO2 output is re-greening the planet. Your beef is with the Chinese fishing fleets.
If you watch this and dont leave having mad respect for every single crew member... watch it again and again until you do
Amen~! PJ
Few years ago, I was introduced to a ship crew in a party. I asked him " Don't you miss the normal world? Where is your life, when your wife is alone in bed and children are growing without their dads?" His response was bold and vivid. " I love ocean. I feel totally free from your so called world being myself. I work and enjoy, don't pay any notice to your so called world of racism, political or religious hatreds. On the ocean it became a military rule and we all abide by it. At the end of my shift I thank the God that I am free from garbage I had to deal everyday on land."
lol I really don't see the appeal of the ocean, just endless water and wind .. and the boat is the same people as on land so same garbage
Big Wow! Makes me want to go now. And the underground Kitchens are insane.. it looks like a lot of work and a lot of fun to work there..
Those hours are heinous, can't believe these poor souls get so disadvantaged by these poor labor practices. Gonna tip double next time I go on my next $80 10 night cruise.
Remember to tip me here in West Africa, Ghana 🇬🇭 .After college,no work was coming as unemployment is high here,so I quickly venture in agriculture and realized it a good business.Kindly assist me with a capital to a truck to convey my fruits from the distant farms to our communities and neighboring towns.
I've been on Anthem of the Seas and it was incredible. I really miss being on that ship, it is just so different and exotic.
$1M a day is an amazing low figure for such a vast ship with 2200 crew?
The crew must be working for free??? Even for allowing for a rubbish wage of $20 an hour that's $350,000 just there. Add fuel, food, taxes, repairs, insurance, docking fees, medical staff, security costs, garbage processing, vessel repayments, interest, how is this ship even making a profit???
at 14:46 waste is absolutely dumped in the ocean and the big cruise liners have been guilty of it all the time.
soooooooo much work involved. much much respect to the guys that do it for a living!
I went on this cruise. Absolutely hated it. I don't understand how anyone enjoys these huge cruises. And the locations you go to are mainly blocked off from the rest of the country (besides Mexico, that place was fun)
Try going to the Mediterranean cruises. You're not blocked off from the rest of the country. It's safe and fun.
its like taking a vacation with the same folks you wait in line with while trying to escape wallmart's check out lanes.
literally, cruises are sooo lame
"Each chef works 10-12 hour days for four months with no time off" ....why are they saying this as if its some sort of triumph???
so happy that this exists
It's crazy how so much goes into operating this whole thing, I'm surprised how little the amount of people are required. And then they're planning on putting this in the sky? Crazy! I'm excited.
they have one cook per 6 persons bro
there is no plans for a sky cruise ship, that story was entirely fabricated by mainstream media mistaking an animation someone made for actual plans because they are ret*rded
2400?
putting it in the whatnow?
@@sickofit1574 He’s talking about some fake artist rendition of what a cruise ship “plane” would look like. Essentially a flying hotel. No one has any plans of actually making something like that seeing as it literally wouldn’t work.
I kept wanting to change to something else but every time something more interesting to learn came uop so I watched the whole video, great work ! I have never been on a cruise ship now I definitely would like to go on one at least once in my lifetime. I have a new appreciation for all of the efforts it takes to run one of these liners.
GOOD
I'm honestly shocked it doesn't cost more than that
I’ve gone on a few cruises. Despite all the fun and entertainment, I recall one crew member who took care of the luggage crouching in the hallway. He had the most despondent face and demeanor and it made me sad. He must have been so far from home, doing a thankless job, and watching as the wealthy of the world were carefree.
I have been on a lot of Royal Caribbean cruises & my wife with her friends on a hell of a lot more cruises. These men & women have it down to a fine science. So do many of the other top of the line cruise ship lines. They have my complete respect for doing a very hard job and doing it excellent. PJ
What an informative video! I had no idea about half of this stuff. Nicely done crew.
I'm literally watching this while on a Royal Caribbean cruise right now lol
WTF, get out there and have fun! 😂
Enjoy it then!
What are you doing?? Get back out there and have fun!!
My dude, get out there and have fun!!
Perhaps his idea is to enjoy a 5 star meal on the balcony with the wife and simply relax seeing the waves. The common areas are overcrowded cesspool anyways.
I was about to say y’all already showed us this but luckily they said this was in late 2019 transparency is key Thansk for that
I went on this cruise twice, once on a trip through Europe and second on a trip through the Caribbean, this is prob the best royal Caribbean ship so far, I've been on others like navigator of the seas but non is as good as symphony
I worked as a contractor for Holland America Line for a few years and I had the time of my life. I was usually free to do whatever i wanted when on land so ive been to Russia, Cuba, China, Rotterdam. finnland, Belize, Panamana, Japan, Singapore... i hate when people ask me what countries ive been bc its almost embarrassing. even in the US ive done east coast trips that incuded nova Scotia and Alaska/Hawii. I LOVED IT. LOVED IT.
It's hard to get into a shipshow, but it's quite easy to get into a shitshow.
Lmao , what?🤣
i am glad they are recycling, of everything, wish more ships did some more. this is a improvement.
They haven't for the last 100 years of shipping. There are laws but some don't follow them. It's hard.
I never realized just howcmuch went into running a ship especially a cruise ship, the scale is insane
They said it a few times, but as a frequent cruiser, I can tell you that the ship does not rock and bob in the waves like everyone thinks. You cannot feel the ship move at all unless it's really rough seas. That's what everyone is afraid of, but it's just not true. Also it's not as cramped with people as people think
man i was really hoping they would talk about the morgue
They are definitely overworked. Eleven months without One day off (unless her use of "vacation day" means something else).
However, even at 17-20 thousand dollars per year, it is a lot more than some of these employees would make in their countries and can send much of their earnings to their families. Package includes free room, drink and food, not a bad deal. But if they feel overworked, it can cause stress, anxiety and depression, so maybe they shouldn't stick around too long.
That is what SHE made. The cooks, the serving staff and the room attendants do not make anywhere close to that amount.
@@Sailing_with_Sabina Not quite. She said the lowest paid talent earns USD ~20K/yr. She said nothing about herself and nothing about regular crew.
The lowest pay 100 dollars a day
There is also casino on board, many alcohol sales, higher class rooms, suites, special restaurants and activities that cost extra, you can buy your pictures for a very high price, there are stores, tours you can purchase, room service and more!
This is where the real money is coming from.
The Executive Chef generally is an Administrator that helps run the operation like a General runs the army. He converses with management and the Chef De Cuisine who does the overseeing/management of the cooking.. I doubt he samples the food on a daily basis. ( I was getting vibes from him of talking himself up for the camera, much like tv Chefs that portend to be behind the burner when media come knocking on their restaurant
Scale is something so overwhelmingly astounding for human beings. Like the Sun or a prehistoric whale, thinking about the sheer size of the ship just triggers something in me.
The scale of the pollution is literally breathtaking
Really hope these workers are getting paid well and fed well for all of their hard work.
Better than onshore hotels or restaurants
Yep. They often make over double the average wages of their home country's.
Duh. If you aren't getting paid lavishly compared to a job in your home country, wtf would you do this shit?
@@John_Smith_86 if nobody does this shit , then when you board your next trip in cruise ship. Cook your own dish , serve your own water , load the food into the cruise yourself , steer the ship yourself , clean the toilets yourself , dump the waste yourself. Duh.....what a moron

Sail this ship , a few weeks ago, indeed it is an amazing ship. Everything is good 100%.
Greeting from Norwegian Cruise Line crew member, regardless any cruise ship company you choose to cruise, i wish u enjoy everything she has to offer and give you a memorable experience🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
This video was so informative, I love cruising, god bless those cruise workers who work those long hours
So that's why RC cruises cost more than Carnival's. They're more impressive.
In one video, you talk about how bad it is that some corporations find loopholes to make workers work longer/harder for less pay, in the next video you glance over it and act like it's normal. Make it make sense.
I have a friend who is a lead performer on a cruise ship. The contract is great, but they are working every day with no days off for 6-8 months at a time.
As a person who is now an avid cruiser since 2020...WOW!♥
I can’t imagine the actual labor that goes into this. surely you must know that it is not as beautiful and organized as it looks right? hope all the workers get paid properly.
