"What if RDJ got nominated for an Oscar for this performance"
Dude, he WAS nominated for an Oscar for this performance. And he almost won (nobody can beat Heath Ledger's Joker)

Yup, for Best Supporting Actor. And in most years, it would've been his to lose. You are right though, Ledger was the deserving winner.

You just don't do a Tropic Thunder reaction and skipping over the "coming attractions".

Indeed. When it was played in the theaters, there was a general and gradual audience recognition, somewhere in the _Scorcher VI_ trailer, that we were already watching the film (as I think a lot of people actually believed the "Booty Sweat" ad could be real, as they watched it...only in hindsight was it obviously part of the film).

"Man, I don't drop character 'till I done the DVD commentary."
Fun Fact: When recording the audio commentary for the Unrated DVD and Blu-ray, Robert Downey, Jr. actually spends the entire commentary in the character that appears on the screen as the movie progresses.
Historical Fact: The South East Asian gang Flaming Dragon, led by a pre-teen boy, was modeled after God's Army, a guerrilla army in Myanmar. The group was led by twin brothers Johnny Htoo and Luther Htoo, who were nine years old when it was founded in 1997. Johnny and Luther Htoo were fond of American action movie heroes, especially the Rambo franchise.
Cruise Unbound Fact: Ben Stiller said nearly all aspects of the Les Grossman character were developed by Tom Cruise, including the dancing and the look of the make-up. Stiller said that in addition to the more obvious make-up effects applied to Cruise's face and head, and the extra hair on his chest and arms, Cruise also decided to play the character wearing oversized prosthetic hands.

    70% Action 30% Comedy? I would say 90% Comedy, 10% Comedic Action

They don't make them like this anymore straight classic. "I'm the dude playing a dude that thinks he's another dude." Rdj knocks it out of the park and we as black people were not mad at him at all despite what the new generation would have you think. It's clear when it's comedy and when it's mockery, and this movie was comedy gold. The man literally did not drop character until after the DVD commentary, hilarious

Guys, you should not have cut out the "previews," they weren't real previews, they set up who the main characters were.

This film is sheer unadulterated comedy. Comedies are always pushing boundaries, but rarely are they they so self aware and intelligent. You know this film had to be fun to make

This is an extremely intelligent film. When I watched it for the first time in 2008, I gained a lot of respect for Ben Stiller - writing and directing a film like this without alienating your audience is quite difficult, and he navigated those treacherous waters extremely well. It uses blackface both to satirize the ridiculous lengths to which method actors go in pursuit of their character, and to comment on just how clueless everyone in Hollywood is about the way the world works (like, the mechanisms of privilege and how people in the fake film just take it for granted that a white dude would be cast in a black role...well, everyone except for the ACTUAL black actor). *But any **_non-moron_** can see that Robert Downey Jr. isn't actually acting in blackface* - the film is quite clear that he's playing a white Australian actor (who is canonically known for taking things WAY too far) portraying an African American soldier. The difference between that, and RDJ portraying an African American is quite significant. _The audience isn't supposed to identify with Kirk Lazarus - we're supposed to think what he's doing is in extremely poor taste!_ And what makes it all the more amusing is that Lazarus can actually recognize this kind of misstep...when someone else is making it. When he's critiquing Tugg Speedman's _Simple Jack,_ his main point is that by taking the character that far (going _full retard,_ as it were), the audience just cannot connect.
All of that is just as true today as it was in 2008. It's not like we're talking about the 1940s here, when people were unashamedly using blackface to make fun of black people. In 2008, *everybody* knew that RDJ was not making fun of black people when he was playing that role, just like Stiller wasn't making fun of disabled people when he did the _Simple Jack_ character. Their target was ACTORS (possibly specific ones, who remain unnamed) and the Hollywood (and wider American) culture that creates actors like this. Today's audiences absolutely understand the difference here (I know, because I've watched a bunch of UA-cam first-time reactions to _Tropic Thunder_ and nobody was OFFENDED by the blackface...everybody comprehends its legitimate narrative purpose - this would be an entirely different film without it...a bad film, actually), and so I think any actor or writer involved in a 2023 project that is analogous to _Tropic Thunder_ would remain firmly _uncancelled._ People aren't stupid; most of us can tell when someone has racist motivations behind these kinds of actions.
However, I still think a movie like this would have a hard time getting green-lit in 2023...not because of overly-sensitive audiences, but instead, because of the major film studios themselves, which have gotten extremely risk-averse in the last 10+ years. More than 90% of the extremely high-budget movies released in the last decade have had a built-in audience, ready to consume them (either from a top-selling novel, comic book, or video game, from a prequel movie, or from a whole cinematic universe...or it could just be a full-on remake of an existing popular film...bonus points if there's nostalgia attached to said film, like _The Lion King_ or_ Ghostbusters_ ). Indeed, EVERY ONE of the top 10-grossing films domestically in 2022 had this built-in audience, from _The Batman_ to _Black Adam_ to _Minions: the Rise of Gru_ to freakin' _Top Gun: Maverick._ These were guaranteed successes, and so they justified massive budgets. _Tropic Thunder_ cost $92 million to make in 2007/08, which is about $130 million today. That's obviously not Avatar money, but it's ~$10 million higher than _Uncharted_ which is, surprise, surprise, another 2022 film with a built-in audience that was wildly successful. *Studios just don't take risks with mid- and high-budget films anymore. Also, if they can't sell it in China, they won't make it...and I don't think they could sell **_Tropic Thunder_** in China, as so much of the humor requires a comprehension of a certain cultural context.*

It's not that intelligent it just takes all the Hollywood stereotypes that people have been making fun for years and made a movie about it too bad it fails in the last parts. Instead of being a clever comedy that builds of the satire it turns into an action comedy.
The difficulties you describe about it being green lit was there back in 2000s as well, everything you described about the last decade happened in that time as well.
Also the part about rdj portraying the black face character didn't have any commentary on how the world works , it made fun of method acting and actor portraying other races.
Navigated treacherous waters? Bruh, the black face is obviously there to make fun of people that do black face which is the most PC message that it can get, now if it tried to explore the other side of it, "if the actor did a good enough job does it matter that he does black face and why should a people of other races not be allowed to play those kinds of roles?" That would have been navigating treacherous waters, tropic thunder played it safe. People really overhyped how good this movie is just cause some 12 year Olds on twitter were offended by it. It is the most basic type of satire it is, have a caricature, have a running gag that makes fun of that caricature. Good satire people have completely forgotten what that's like. Examples: catch 22, life of Brian, slaughterhouse 5.

Plus this whole "we're going to get cancelled", and "thought police" thing is just one big made up circle jerk. People have always complained and different groups wanted to boycott TV shows, movies, music, etc for decades. It's nothing new. It's just that while some people might be walking around, talking about being "woke", there's an equally annoying group of belligerent assholes who walk around talking about how they're constantly getting cancelled, or that they're not afraid to get cancelled. There's no such thing. They just like the feeling of pretending to be persecuted for their ideas because it makes them feel like they have some revolutionary and noteworthy ideas.

You made a 37 minute video of the movie but left off the about 5 minutes of fake commercials at the beginning of the movie. These 4 commercials were very important as the actors within the promo movies were the actors in the movie and reverences to each actor and the roles they played in the commercial showed up throughout the movie. You goofed. Why? Did you think they were silly or took it on yourselves to decide to edit out what you thought was humor. One of you had seen the movie so you should have seen the importance of each actors promo movie preview. The first was alpachinos booty sweat commercial - big time movie reverence, the second tug speed man, Ben spillers character and he produced the movie but this actors reverences could be as many as five times, jack blacks at leasypt fives times reverences Rdjs at least five times. You goofed. I unsubscribed and disliked your video. You knew so much about editing that you took out the parts of four actors that were an integral part of the movie. Maybe this is a lesson in future editing.
