Wabi-sabi: The magnificence of imperfection: Cheryl Hunter at TEDxSantaMonica

  • Cheryl Hunter comes at her work with a multi-pronged approach, having merged seemingly-divergent careers around one idea: that a simple story, well told and presented, has tremendous potential to educate, entertain and impact people. Cheryl is an educator, author, speaker and high-performance coach who has personally coached and led personal development seminars for over 86,000 people since 1995. Simultaneously, Cheryl has had a career in the entertainment industry spanning two decades, working as a television and feature film writer/producer-under contract with HBO, Paramount Pictures, CBS and NBC. She's also written and acted in solo plays that she's toured nationally.
Cheryl shared a personal story about having been abducted as a teenager, and asked, "Why is it that we obsess over the things we can't change, rather than the things we can?"
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

What the actual f**k, this was the most profound ted talks I've ever listened to or watched. Everything she said was all leading towards what she had to say at the end, as if it was a film or a great book. Amazing writing and great emotion while speaking Cheryl, I hope you're doing well with where you are with life now.

Your vulnerability in sharing this is humbling and inspiring. I'm happy that the symbolism inherent in the concept of wabi-sabi opened the path to healing from an experience no one should have to endure. Kudos to you... And thanks for sharing something so painful. I sense your emotional strength and a deep-seated faith in ultimate goodness.

+Fernando Alfaro vulnerability is expression of weakness bagging for attention like a baby. Strong people are sincere and sensitive to their own and other peoples needs and feelings. Telling a story and showing emotional seen is an act, not real life. People run after stories like a dogs after stick. and every story teller is a professional liar, entertainer, talking nonsense. wake up! only now is real that we all can sense and observe.

+Janes Smith what you expressed has no affect on anyone who has gone through hell like this. Perhaps before it is your time to pass-you will realize why your soul is so miserable and find happiness.

I know Cheryl, we grew up near each other. Despite her horrific experience she is out in this world sharing her story as she should. The comments made here that are positive I applaud you. For those who have chosen to post unkind and or cruel comments, it's your heart and soul that needs to escape out of your body of hell it's locked into. You are no stronger or weaker than anyone. You're just as lost and cruel as those who kidnapped Cheryl.

This is more like theater or a one person play but it is definitely interesting and riveting. It had an added dramatic effect that was a bit jarring at times but the point she made was a good one. I was glad she bowed to the woman because I think I would have done the same. Just an act of recognition and understanding for the woman's pain and being unfortunate enough to be the target of it. In all circumstances Cheryl was on the receiving end of something she didn't understand or want and had to learn how to react or not react to it.

Right now on my suggested viewing bar, the TEDxTalks that have the most views are about retiring young, happiness, being yourself, introversion... etc. It surprises me that this doesn't have more views!
This is one of the rawest TED talks I've seen and the most relatable (except for the modeling part). I just discovered wabi-sabi today but it's definitely one principle to look into and practice.

Ms. Hunter gave the best TED talk I've ever seen. She had lessons from life to teach simply by sharing her story. I listened/watched a talk by a guy who makes his living on the internet who spent a whole year off-line and felt that his stories would somehow be enlightening. He is back on-line and making his living there so being off-line couldn't have been too great could it? Ms. Hunter is remarkable and someone I would love for my wife and I to have to dinner with friends. She is magnificent. Thank you for this.

Ego demanded I click away dispassionately
Compassion peacefully stayed me attentive and transfixed
Travel Experience took me to Japan in the 2000’s for 6 years in a row
Wabi Sabi draws me my deepest self knowing
Being an artist challenges me to never make a mark, tell a story, or speak from my soul without the courage to let my deepest wabi sabi truth set me free.
    Magnificent ted talk
