  • On this week's episode of 'This and That," we preview next weekend's ISU Grand Prix Final in Vancouver and discuss this weekend's Tallinn Trophy.
    Nathan Chen and Shoma Uno look to be the main challengers for gold in the men's event, while the ladies' event features Alina Zagitova, Rika Kihira, Satoko Miyahara, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, Kaori Sakamoto and Sofia Samodurova, all of whom look to have a potential to medal. The dance event features a three-way showdown between Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue, Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin, and Viktoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katasalapov. The pair event looks like a face-off between Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres from France and Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov.
    At the 2018 Tallinn Trophy, Karen Chen made a return to competition but withdrew after the short program. Vincent Zhou continued to receive underrotations. Ting Cui displayed great potential.

    When I watch the Kentucky Derby every year I select my first, second, and third horse (I’m actually quite good at it, I don’t know how) and then I select a forth horse. A horse that I feel may not win but has the spirit to win. A horse that if it won I would run around like a town crier and say “I told you!” to everyone as I did in 2009 with Mine That Bird when 13 year old Savannah picked the winner and won $400 dollars. For me, Kaori Sakamoto is that horse.

    In Evgenia's absence, I would love to see Elizaveta win here! I'm so impressed with her post-Olympic season comebacks - who knows, maybe she can keep it going and win a medal at the next Olympics! She has the advantage of having finished growing at the relatively short height of 5'2" and who knows how Eteri's junior ladies will be built in a few years. Even if some of the juniors do make it (I love Kostornaia and hope that she does well for many years to come), Elizaveta could stay competitive if she keeps up her current improvement. Her 3A is brilliant and I could see her learning a 4T or 4Lz as well

    • @katg8924
      @katg8924 5 років тому

      @LaB Oh no :( If that decision makes her happy, I'm okay with it - but I thought she would stick around. When did she announce it? I tried to look for it quickly, and I found this article from earlier this year suggesting that she hasn't decided yet: www.fsuniverse.net/forum/threads/vaytsekhovskayas-interview-with-tuktamysheva.104348/

    • @katg8924
      @katg8924 5 років тому

      @lawomann I know she doesn't have the insanely tiny frame that those junior girls do, but she is muscular and I still think her height is an advantage. A lot of Eteri's girls who keep getting taller look like they are incredibly thin in part to prevent from getting even taller and to compensate for how tall they already are. Also, I don't think Elizaveta's body has changed in many years and I doubt that it will again. Those young girls will constantly have to make small adjustments to their technique (at best - I suspect some will really have to relearn a lot) until they stop growing, which may take a while.

    Vincent did scale back a bit with the quads, only trying 2 in the free skate, but he still got calls on all of them at Tallinn Trophy. It was an okay event for Tarah & Danny, underrotation issues and not a great score. They don't stand out against a team like Ziegler & Kiefer. They were behind a random Italian pair and the new US pair in the SP, who were also oddly overscored. They really need to be on otherwise their scores haven't held up well. In ladies, it was a promising score for Ting given the mistakes, especially compared to how the other US ladies tend to fare. The 3Lz-3T is a wow element when she's on.
    I'll really miss seeing Hanyu at the GP Final, it doesn't feel complete without him. Not only are there no Canadians in the field except Keegan, but the top skaters like Hanyu, Medvedeva, Papadakis & Cizeron who train in Canada aren't there either, so it was some bad luck for the host country. But the event will be great anyway.

    I'm from Quebec, and it is Laurence Fournier-Beaudry. I think for the three names, it is because in the province of Quebec the parents can both give their name to their child.
    Here's an article I found that explains it : In the early 1980s, the law allowed women to give their family names to their children. This trend culminated in 1992, when 22% of children inherited the double name.Since then, the trend is in free fall. The double name, considered one of the gains of the feminist struggle for equality, gives way to the return of tradition.
    Hope that answers your questions Dave :) Always nice to listen to you!

    The music has become so bad I mostly watch with sound off. Something that may work for an Adele concert or an evening with Michael Bublé doesn’t necessarily translate to a figure skating routine. At least ballet music was meant to be danced to, although if one more swan straps on ice skates I may be forced to take up hunting! The point being with all the millions of choices it’s come to this. I’m starting a list an invite you all to add to it of songs I never want to hear at a figure skating contest again! 1-Carmen 2-swan lake.3-anything by Andrew L. Weber 4 well you get the point

    Vincent Zhou needs a new coach. The things Tom Z said in his facebook rant tells me that he just isn't a good coach. Really - teaching that 180 degree pre-rotation is okay? Claiming that it's okay to not be rotated at the blade as long as the shoulders are around? A small part of me feels sorry for Zhou - he seems to have been trained poorly and now it's going to be so difficult to fix his jumps. I agree that he should probably focus on re-building his jumps 1 by 1 while working on improving the non-jump aspects.
    For the GPF, unless the patterns of the GOE change drastically, Shoma needs to fall like 5 times with others skating well for him to fall below 2nd. He made 4 major mistakes in Skate Canada and 3 at NHK and his numbers are still well above everyone but Chen and Hanyu. The gold medal is in his control - it's just a question of whether he'll splat enough times for Nathan to get it.

    And in Ladies field my vote goes to Rika. I love Alina so much, but Rika is better on many levels, if she lands those triples, she's unbeatable. And yet again, if. I think it will be Alina, Rika, Satoko, and i'm not mad at all.

    No one expects Tweedale and Buckland to win at Zagreb but it’s an important competition for them after this weekend’s British Nationals. Fear and Gibson are really starting to pull ahead of them and it’s important that they show that they can improve every competition as well.
    Hopefully they can hit 170 -169 at Golden Spin and then by Euros be aiming for 173+. If they can improve every competition and show that progression then I see a brighter future for Ice Dance in the UK.

    Late for this, but about the double last name in Quebec... Since 1981, it has been illegal for women in Quebec to change their surname when they marry. This led to a bit of an equality movement in the 80s, where women wanted to also pass down their name for different reasons (political, being tied to their children, etc.). It was big from the early 80s and well into the 90s, but i think it’s much less common now. I grew up with a lot of kids with hyphenated names and many of them actually found it to be a bit of a burden and are not doing the same with their own kids (btw, only two last names are allowed; if both parents are hyphenated, they can only pick two of the four).

I can tell you that they on did 1 re-skate from the first half (Meagan had to land her throw 3 lutz). The second half of the show is of a different format than SOI and isn't conducive to re-skates anyway.

    Dear Dave & Jon, I really enjoy listening to your TSL videos with your juicy repartee and gossipy skating insights -- and I truly mean that in a sincere and positive way. I'm neither a super fan nor a figure skating expert like you guys are. But there's one thing that bothers and really baffles me... Why are you both always so snarky about Patrick Chan? In his prime, Patrick was by far my favorite skater. Watching Patrick skate was like watching Gene Kelly in "Singin' in the Rain." Magical! I've heard you complain about "Chanflation," how he has a big ego, how he might even be responsible with something going wrong with the recent attempt to televise the "The Thank You Canada Tour." Why, why, why???? Why are you so hard on Patrick? I have a suggestion. Please interview him! -- Sara Bellingham, WA

    • @TheSkatingLesson
      @TheSkatingLesson  5 років тому

      Sara Geballe I think you’re taking a light snark as something more. Patrick is indeed a wonderful skater. He also was a frustrating competitor who often made a lot of errors in a unique Patrick way. The term ‘Chanflation’ was used widespread in skating at the time. I actually used his skating as an example of wonderful transitions when Jenny and I initially broke down the components in 2013.
      The TV broadcast comment was not meant to be mean or derogatory in any way. I was honestly just making a joke about what a post production error could be.

      Excellent! Perhaps now that he is in a post-competitive career place, has more time, looks happy, and seems to have accepted the ups and (sadly mostly) downs of his Olympics experiences, he has the distance and maturity to discuss all this -- which I think fans would find very interesting. Please keep me posted!

    Women’s event will be the most exciting. If rika lands 3 x 3As I think judges will give it to her, if she only does 2 then Zag wins, if she lands one then satoko will be 2nd. Otherwise zag, is lock for gold. Although after rewatching Satoko’s jumps...they are being landed in very weird, almost deliberate way, to prove to judges she is not under rotating. Her leg and foot are aligned but her torso is skewed-very unnatural. It’s all I see when she lands now and hurting her overall performance IMO. If she just had the jumps she would have it all, just lake Sasha 😂.
    It’s sad that Evgenia isn’t here.
    I think Shomo(the better skater) will win. I agree with your guys comments early on that Nathan appear sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. I mean he got a level 2 spin on skate France. But he had time to do Tutka show.
