      @@rop888 i think it has to do with the travel and changing of timezones. At Europeans the flights and time difference isn't that bad because European countries are pretty close together and flights are cheaper as well.
      For 4CC you can have more drastic time changes. For example this year the East Asian skaters (Korea, China, Japan for example) will have it bad cause its in LA but last year it was in Taiwan, which would've edreally mess up the North American skaters.

    The quality of Tuktamysheva's quad would certainly suggest - as the boy's argue - that she was waiting to reveal this jump when it was ready to go into her program. But, if so, it also seems a questionable decision considering how far she has dropped in the judges' estimation leading in to the Russian Nationals. The timing actually suggests that this is a last-stab attempt by the skater and her coaches to reinsert her into the conversation re: which Russian ladies should be be sent to Euros and Worlds. To this extent, I do wonder how consistent Tuktamysheva has been in regards landing the quad. I'm guessing she hasn't been consistent at all; but that when she does land it, she does so spectacularly well. Regardless of who is correct on this point, all I know for sure is that the possibility that Tuktamysheva will be performing both 3As and quads at Russian Nationals has only added to the drama of that upcoming event. It could be an amazing competition.

      god I just wish she would clean up her performance too! there's something I really like about her and she's such a competitor, if she would only polish up, she'll outlast Scherbakova and possibly Trusova as well. That quad toe is so huge she pulls it off like a triple.

    Tuktamysheva's quad! That thing was gorgeous! And one Yagudin comment: I have no idea how this all plays in his domestic market, and I'd think that's what would be important to him. I'd love to hear Johnny Weir speak to this...he's a know Russophile, with not the most macho skating style, and would have an informed opinion.

    I loved, loved, loved Liza Tuktamysheva's quad toes - height and distance, effortless (hitting those GOE bullets, though not the transitions bullet). Her 3A's are also amazing, so effortless, as if she's out for a Sunday stroll (and don't get me started on her beautiful outside Lutz edge). I would love to see her out-compete the adolescents within Russia and make it to Worlds.
    I think Figure skating would benefit from creating multiple events within a competition: e.g. one event focused on jumps, one on spins, one on step sequences/artistry, and then there could be an all-around event for skaters who are the complete package. This would be akin to gymnastics, where some athletes specialize in only one or two events. It would increase the number of medals available at any championships/Olympics and would let skaters who are amazing at certain skills develop their expertise in that area (e.g. Trusova and jumps). It would be a win-win. One challenge in implementing this kind of thing would be the amount of ice time needed for competitions, but I'm sure that could be figured out. Someone tried to raise an idea like this as a topic for discussion at the last ISU Congress, but it was quickly shut down, by none other than Alexander Lakernik, who also shut down any discussion around raising the minimum age in Seniors. I hope it comes up again and the ISU can have a real discussion about it.

    • @achilleroy1580
      @achilleroy1580 5 років тому +5

      At the same time, wouldn't it be decreasing the value of these medals? I think, in a situation of fair judging, Olympics are so interesting because you only have one champion every four years and everyone is purchasing this title. It makes it very special, and having several categories would make it feel less special I feel

    Here is what Yagudin said in his live commentary when Jason Brown was just about to start his short program at Skate America: “He (Jason) will be lifting his legs and nothing else. It’ll be incorrect and unfair to say that Jason Brown can do nothing at all. One mustn’t speak like that. He glides very well, he has very good lines, his rotations are cool - he takes interesting poses in them; he is stretched, he controls his body very well. All these let him do programs full of interesting tricks. But still, modern men’s skating is considered to be quad jumps, many quad jumps.
    His components are of a high level. Forgive me, I don’t want to remember way back years, but in 1996 Evgeni Plushchenko and me competed in the World Junior and did the same set of elements. It was 1996! Anyway, Jason Brown was born in 1994. It’ll be no surprise if he is overscored in component points.”

      But I was also relieved that Voronov did better than him, because having Jason go with THAT performance would have been absolutely terrible. He would have gone ove Boyang and Nam, although both had higher accumulated total scores. The story would have been completely different if he had done well, but his sp was a mess and so was the fs. Having him go to the gpf just because he was lucky enough to mess up in a comp that was not as tough as the others would be kind of unfair.

    In the hood where , homosexuality is something you’d get teased for. A barber out of nowhere started talking about “ fags”. That’s when a dude who is a drug dealer said “ I’m not worried about the man that i know is gay, I’m worried about the man that out of nowhere has that much to say about something he swears he hates that shouldn’t be that serious since he swears he hated it so much”. Another barber replied “ so what are you trying to say?” In an instigating manor. He then said “ all I’m Saying is, you gotta watch those first person responses to shit that shouldn’t concern you... how is he so mad and upset about what another man is doing unless he is doing it too”... and that, was that. Few years later, guess who tried to holler at me on Jack’d.... so, yeah, I don’t like Jason’s super feminine skating all the time but that has more to do with my own concealing of my sexuality than it has to do with Jason. Sometimes , like “ Los” at the barber shop was insinuating, your response and you intensity can tell on you.

And he was not doing online courses but was probably studying for his upcoming finals (which will take place right after GPF)

    Some thoughts on the russian pairs: I think B/K absolutely deserve to be second at the final, their consistency is outstanding compared to the mess that is the pairs discipline, minus S/H. And I find her very likeable, if not a star. As for T/M, to me the problem is him. I see her trying to connect with him and show emotion and he never even looks at her. Also, isnt the jgpf russian pairs? Who is coaching them and why is no one talking about them. Seems like in a few years the pairs discipline is gonna look a lot like the ladies does RN.

    Have to put ALL Russian stuff in context to understand how they develop their skaters and view others. First and foremost, they care about little other than the Olympics, the real international showcase for their strength and superiority. The need to show this lives deep in their culture like in few other countries. Next, their philosophy in sport is to show clear superior strength and power, because you can't for example easily tease out superiority based on depth of edge of how you make use of the ice surface. So their model is simple and that is to drive marks through tech superiority that the audience can see and big dramatic skating where they can't (dance). Quads, 3As, high twists, huge throws, that's what it's all about. What also works with this model is that judges are mostly forced to drag PCS along with TES or there's audience revolt - viewers would see the tech superiority and consistency, and not understand why these skaters aren't winning. So you will always see 8-8.5+ for the skaters with the highest tech. Even if there's not a single transition in the program. So that's the model, that's the mindset. And hence the backlash against PCS skaters such as Brown, Buttle, etc. Russians have a clear and (unduly) focused narrative on what superior looks like and it works with how they develop their skaters and win the biggest events - so they viciously defend it, while championing their own above all others. Always. Unlike Japanese, Canadians, etc they are not huge fans of great overall skating, especially if it weakens their standing.

    A shame the French pair and Zabiako/Enbert missed the Grand Prix season
    would have been so much more interesting at GPF
    B/K so far have best season score but Sui/Han had mistakes in China and in Japan, so they can get much better score. Would love to see them make the most out of jump combo (do a 3-2-2 instead of 3-2) but i guess her previous leg injury doesn't allow that. :c They are such a great team though.
    With Savchenko/Mussot and Duhamel/Radford out, competition feels kinda stale tbh (S/M might come back though?)
    And everyone have the same elements since ISU doesn't reward quads, so many skaters feel like the risk of injury isn't worth it...
    Hopefully we will see more interesting parallel jumps in the future, at least (like M/G 3S-Eu-3S). Oh, and there are 5(!!!) Russian pairs in JGPF, which is insane. Can pairs become Russia dominating discipline, like it once was? I'm already excited for 2026 xD
    Kozlovskii improved so much this season! Last season I couldn't stop thinking that Boikova needed a better partner, but starting from test skates up to this moment, he can't stop surprising me! When they perform, I want to look at nothing but them. I love their lines, jump exits and lifts. And Boikova's smile! Their SP is wonderful.
    Everyone talking about Moskvina magic, but they also have Arthur Minchuk as their trainer, who deserves praise as well.
    and both of them seem so hard-working and have so much potential. I think they can be on the same level as sui/han in a year or two.
    I hope this GP season is a wake-up call for Tarasova/Morozov. They are both so talented yet so unstable, and very disconnected.
    Tarasova looks very unhappy during some of the competitions (especially Canada, augh,the look on her face!), but I feel like she tries to connect with Morozov, who doesn't even look at her when they skate. I feel nothing when watching them
    Their choreography has definitely improved though, good job with Zueva.

    Alysa has the most difficult layout in her long program. At the senior level, everyone keeps speculating about which lady will be the first to have both triple axels and quads. We already have that at the junior level, with Alysa. Yes, there is pressure on her, but most people are discounting her. I think she can win if she does all of her elements.

    What’s the rationale for basing GPF qualification on placement at the GP events rather than cumulative point total?

    • @a9029k
      @a9029k 5 років тому

      mish098aimer from what I understand, points are only used as a tiebreaker between people with the same standings in their 2 events (Hanyu and Chen with two golds each). But it seems like there could be a scenario where someone with two bronze medals had a higher point total than someone with a silver and a 4th place finish, or even someone with 2 silvers, depending on the fields at the respective events. This seems especially relevant now that we have ladies doing quads and scoring 20-30+ points higher than the rest of the field. I might be missing something, though, and maybe it works itself out by using placement instead of point total.. math isn’t my strong suit. But it just seems more straightforward to use points, even though it would mean having to wait until the last event to know for sure who qualified.

  • @insi4547

    Yagudin is an attention and hype-seeking type, wish this situation with Jason is the apogee and ends in Yagudin being banned from the TV but the support he has been getting from Tarasova and other fig.skating 'elite' makes it highly unlikely. Validating him to say whatever he thinks is right on Russia's no.1 channel is absurd. He definitely learned from the best. Ms. Tarasova at NHK, right before Karen Chen started, was already 'giving away' the medals to RU girls and Rika; and at the request of Grishin (the only professional commentator of fig. skating the 1st channel has) to hold back and let the last skater do her job, replied : 'i beg you, WHO is there to wait for?'. There are *tons* of comments like that by Tarasova and Yagudin, but it's the mafia that we will have to put up with for long, I'm afraid.

    I was, dare I say, very disappointed with both of you guys insofar as your comments on Yagudin. Why can’t you just call his comments what they are? They’re homophobia dressed up in toxic masculinity. The best you guys could say was “....that was not a good look.....”. And you continually kept saying that you’re choosing your words carefully. Why do you have to choose your words carefully? Is it not OK to call a bigot a bigot? WTF, Dave. You guys didn’t have to address this if you didn’t want to, but once you decided to address it, I feel like you HAVE to call out the bigoted, homophobic statements. It’s easy as that.
