  • Dr. Dave demonstrates and explains how to execute the 10 most famous pool shots by the Greatest of All Time (GOAT): Efren Bata “The Magician” Reyes. And these aren’t trick shots. They are real shots from real matches in the games of 8-ball, 9-ball, one pocket, straight pool, and 15-ball rotation. The video also includes a small tribute to the late great Jeopardy gameshow host Alex Trebek (1940-2020), who I and others will miss dearly. RIP Alex!
    This is part of the "Most Famous Pool Shots" series:

      @@maninthemiddleground2316 If you are talking about the draw carom off the 6 into the 7, that shot is not as difficult as it looks if you know the 3-times-the-angle (trisect) system used for CB control or to aim carom shots. See:

      @@DrDaveBilliards oh ok … thanks 😊 I know the draw itself was not that hard especially for Efren especially since he played a lot of carom before. For me it was mind blowing because Efren needed to compute that the next lowest ball will end up (preparation) where it did a part of me think it’s a fluke and another part of me thinks “well he’s efren … go figure” 😅

    Love it, Love it, Love it
    1. Love Your selection of the magicians best shots
    2. Love your explanations and technical thought process in executing these shots.
    3. Love the fact that you (who arguably would be top 0.01% of pool talent in the world) showed how many tries it took for you to execute these shots.
    Efren had to
    - visualize these shots in a few seconds
    - adjust to a new table every time he played a game. Table quality was inconsistent and prone to errors vs what we have today
    - had to weigh in the risk of missing the shot and losing the frame/game

    Dave, you are a top tier educator. Your videos are concise, detailed when needed but without unnecessary "for views" fluff in your speaking. The perfect type of video for referencing topics even after subsequent viewings. It's like watching a peer-reviewed article/video in the Journal of Billiards. Your enthusiasm for the game and for teaching is evident in how you not only describe and demonstrate the shot at hand, but also how you show various ways in which errors in executing the shot could occur and the consequences that would result. I recognize the time and effort going into filming these sequences and I just wanted to say thank you for producing such excellent content.

    ..and I bow to you Dr. Dave for this video series..what made Efren the GOAT was he revolutionized the game...i think most players before Efren's time were kinda straightforward on how they approached the game. Efren showed them you can do more and be creative on the table. Pool is chess and golf at the same time. Skill and strategy and a bit of luck comes in play. What is often overlook in Efren's greatness was the fact he does this magic stuff on all kinds of table, whether it is on a tournament or your regular worn out table, on various conditions, whether indoor or outdoor, humid and otherwise. I saw some commentators say that the cloth, the room temperature, humidity matters also in doing a shot. So my question is, do the pros know how to judge the table that instantly in a match, or its just that Efren has this God level intuition?

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  3 роки тому +5

      All players are good at adjusting to different table conditions, because they need to do it often, and it isn't that difficult. What separates Efren from others is his shot creativity and his ability to kick off multiple rails so accurately.

    I've been doing a version of Efren's Z shot for many years; however, the majority of Z shots I encounter are easier done (for me anyway) by using low left or low right (7 O'clock or 5 O'clock); this method, coupled with an off-rail aiming system of mine, I have a fairly good success rate. Occasionally, I need to use left or right high, but find low works better.

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  3 роки тому +2

      I think a Z-shot is more natural with a rolling CB with no sidespin. There is actually an aiming system that works fairly well if the angle isn't too large:
      billiards.colostate.edu/faq/bank-kick/z-kick/
      Efren's shot required sidespin to clear the obstacle balls and create the angle required.

    Why do you guys think Efren chose to use inside on shot 9 at 11:47? Here are possible reasonable explanations:
    1.) He was trying to go off two rails into the line of the 8 from behind as I demonstrated?
    2.) He meant to use a little less spin and go past the 8 to shoot it in the same pocket as the 7, possibly hooking his opponent if he missed the 7 (as a two-way shot).
    3.) He meant to use a little more spin and go past the 8 between the 8 and cushion to shoot the 8 in the same pocket as the 7, possibly hooking his opponent if he missed the 7 (as a two-way shot).
    4.) He meant to hold the CB for the 8 (using the drag shot); and since he came perfectly into the line of the 8, the bump didn't hurt him.
    5.) He meant to bump into the 8 (i.e., the shot went exactly as planned).
    Do you guys have other possible explanations?
    Also, do you think he made the right choice, or should he have just used no sidespin and go up and down the table for easy shape as I also demonstrated?
    I look forward to seeing what you guys think.

    • @user-vz5ly3gf9m
      @user-vz5ly3gf9m 3 роки тому +1

      I guess it shouldn't be the 1.) cause Efren is excellent at strength controlling, despite sometimes he might be unstable on accuracy of shots. On the other hand, 2.) makes sense about why he didn't use the common choice as you demonstrated.

    • @demetriusjelatis4753
      @demetriusjelatis4753 3 роки тому +1

      Hi Dave! Great video!
      Facing a difficult shot towards the end of the rack there are three things to weigh: Make percentage, position, and the possibility of safety should you miss the shot.
      I don't believe Efren chose inside for positional reasons. On a shot like this when a player puts the emphasis on offense they typically cinch the ball and shoot with whatever speed and tip placement maximizes their make percentage. Most players would just cut this in with center ball and possibly go two rails playing shape for the 8 in the lower right corner as we view the screen. This is the easiest make, i.e. no spin and a smooth confident stroke speed. Shooting softly from this angle and distance makes accuracy more challenging both for cueing confidence and the possibility of drift (which can't be allowed on this thin of a cut).
      What that means is that Efren possibly baked in the possibility of defense into the equation. If he went all out with a center ball hit and two rail speed there is little safety possibility if he misses. The cue ball will be rebounding off the second rail back up table leaving the cue ball and object ball close together, and if he undercuts the shot there is a strong chance the ball will be hung up or near the corner. The way he played it looks like he was favoring the pro side, figuring that if he missed the 6 would rebound off the side rail to the head rail, and the cue ball would be sliding up table. With the cue ball ending up near the right hand side rail the 6 wouldn't have to rebound far to deny a shot. Also, by using side spin he lengthens the cue ball path so he can hit it with an accurate cue speed and prevent the cue ball from heading back up table again.
      The other possibility is he feels his make percentage is just as high with the inside spin. The deflection helps hit the ball thin, and he can aim to just miss the entire ball and then curve in just a hair to make contact. Sometimes it's easier to start thin and swerve thicker. The side rail may have played a role as well, he wanted to use a drag draw for confident cueing speed and to prevent table roll, and being bridged near the left hand side rail this may have been easier with right spin.
      My guess is it was a little of each of these things. But Efren was one of a kind and none of us will see the table how he did!

    Hey Dr. Dave, normally I would just shoot you an email, but maybe my public questions may help others.
    I recently purchased SAWS (fantastic), and I'm calibrating my cue. I am having a hard time figuring out which sentinel ball the cue ball hits. With fast speed, and my head down, I can't look up in time to see which sentinel was hit first, and even if I do, it's really difficult for me atleast to determine which was hit first. So I am planning on using a camera set to slow motion to help.
    Is this the easiest way, or is there a more simple method?

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  3 роки тому +2

      I can usually tell because I focus on the gap between the sentinels before my final stroke (just as I would focus on the OB instead of the CB during the stroke for a normal pool shot). I can usually see which side of the gap the CB heads, even at fast speed. A friend standing over the pocket looking down can also usually tell. If not, a camera is a good idea.

    Dr Dave - I want to add some more details to the shot you chose as you top one - shot no. 10.
    I have watched the original video many times and the fact that most people miss is that Efren actually called the shot as a “5 Rail Shot”. If you see the video, he shows that he plans to go up and down, come back and hit BOTH the pocket rails before he pots the ball. He then actually Taps his stick on the target pocket to show that he plans to do that. He also only celebrates when the ball touches the rail the 5th time.
    The fact that he was able to call that last piece of complexity makes him the GOAT - as you rightly said.

    The system you used like what efren taught me when I was in MCS. I was lucky I spotted him near the smoking area at the pool halL and asked him a picture. All of the sudden I ask how he aim kick shot perfectly ad he demonstrated the system u used. And he told us that he's been doing that at lucky 13 and mastered it as if like he's aiming a regular shot. He always start with an imaginary line where he want the ball to traverse. It is really effective way but unfortunately my skill level is not even closed to him. We need thousand hours to practice these system without putting cue stick as imaginanary line.

    How would you get the ball in the same position as you practice, half a centimeter in any direction make all different, we only learn the general idea how the ball goes.

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  3 роки тому +1

      Agreed. Small changes in ball positions can make a big difference, but that's a good thing to learn during practice. Now, when I want to try multiple attempts in the same ball positions, I use donuts:

    I wish I would have been paying attention to pool in the 90s and 00s, but I had lots of other interests at work then. But from the videos I've watched and things that I've read, 25 years ago Efren Reyes was the "Tiger Woods" of the pool world - without the SCREWUPS! 🤣

    Just before I clicked the link I said to my wife I know what the first one will be...and it was. Blew me away when he did that in that match. I miss watching him, but he still plays some KILLER one pocket, even today. The one against Shane was good.
    Efren's balk line and 3 cushion experience really showed in shots like that first one. I asked the Accustats guys to put a Balkline game on, they did, and it is an excellent demo...wrong cloth...wrong table...the guy was using his regular pool cue and ran a BUNCH against the world champion of the time who hardly got out of his seat. When he did you could tell he was tickled with his 'opponent's' play, smiling from ear to ear.

      @@DrDaveBilliards I don't know if I told you this story already, but I had a friend that about 25 years ago came one ball from winning the Australian Open Snooker tourney, when he dogged his last shot for the win partially because a cameraman moved on his line. He told me he was more irritated with himself than anyone else, though, because he got up to look at the board to make sure it was the winning ball, and then got back down and that happened.
      I asked him one day what I should do to improve my shooting and he said "there's too much". Accurate assessment, I'm afraid, but I about fell out of my chair he said it so serious and deadpan.
      Now to his demo shot. He froze a ball about 6' out of the corner on the short rail and put a ball close into the diagonal corner pocket. He than proceeded to shoot the cue from within about six inches of the frozen ball, up the table, draw it all the way back, and pocket the fine rail cut. Took him three tries. First he missed by probably about 1/2" correct side, then next was an almost head on hit on the frozen ball, the third was in the pocket. This was on a nine foot with fairly seriously cut pockets, maybe 4 1/4". I looked at him and said "Do you think that makes me like you more, or less?" His turn to laugh. Amazing player, though, his cue ball is insane, and he told me he is HORRIBLE now compared to when he was competing. The other thing I asked was "Is there really that much difference between where you were and middle to top pros?" His response was "Yes, a LOT". And then we have the Efrens, and Ronnies, etc. They are almost more like machines than humans in the accuracy and repeatability they bring to virtually every shot. And the knowledge! Cheers, I'll shut up now.

    Why does Efren decide to go for the tough shots when there are easier alternatives? Two reasons: 1) he's got style 2) if it's too easy, he gets bored.

    My favorite didn't make the list and I think it's no way the hardest but it always gives me a warm feeling inside and a smile to my face when I watch the clip, something about the way he seems to always be having fun and enjoying getting to entertain folks. It's the one where he's playing 10-ball and has a really easy shot for the 10 in the corner with cue ball and 10 both being near the side pocket. He calls it in the side and banks the ten from the top cushion stunning the cue and the 10 going in from it. ua-cam.com/video/AwtsAv3pMak/v-deo.html he stars to smile as soon as he sees where the cue is going after the nine but not because (i think) he knows he's gonna win the match but because he sees the opportunity to play the shot he proceeds to execute.
