I'm proficient in most of these. There is always room for improvement. As an amateur, you have to have goals and priorities. For me: Billiards is for fun and socializing. Making good shots is WAY more important than winning. So, I am SKIPPING jump shots and massé shots. They're both unnecessarily loud and unpleasant. If I can't make a shot without those two tools, it's safety time or socializing time. Thanks for 1-8.

Hello Dr. Dave... I have seen your video for the first time in between 2005 and 2006 than is when I bought my very first computer which is a laptop.. I did not realize I am doing all my shot wrong until I watched your video about basics in Billiard.. from stance, holding the cue, aiming and shooting... and I still continue to learn from you because of your way of teaching... you always explain things very clear and informative.. always thank you Dr. Dave for sharing your knowledge about pool to all of us... back then you ask for money for your videos now you share it for free... thank again for that and this last few days I watched this video I am again blessed to know a thing I did not know about pool until now.. and again this still basic.. guys listen this man named Dr. Dave is the one for all of you who want t learn Pool he is good at teaching..

You really are doing many pool players a solid with your videos. It took me many years to learn to do these shots. Growing up in the 80's and 90's as you know no UA-cam free lessons. It's good overall for the game!!!! 👍🏻

I'm a rank amateur when it comes to pool, but these videos are done extremely well from a videographic standpoint. Everything is clear and easy to understand and the balance of footage and VO doesn't detract from that. I like the placement of the heading and reticule in relation to the table. It's obvious you know what you're doing. Even for someone as inept at pool as myself, these are a treat to watch. Kudos!

I maxed out my APA skill levels 20 yrs ago. Then I took lessons. Many of the skills in this video. It was worth paying for knowledge I could utilize immediately. I practice with weapons in my quiver. Thats why I play better than ever at 63. Dave has the scientifically researched stuff.
John Evans Good post. Anybody willing to learn and motivated to practice can improve. In my experience, many (if not most) people in leagues do not have these attributes.

Most people, even many top pros, don't really "practice" at all (other than playing games all of the time). This is not a very "intelligent" approach, IMO. [Maybe this is one reason the US has had little hope in the Mosconi Cup.]

Keys to the dart stroke are: get your bridge as high as possible, keep a light grip and wrist, limit arm motion, and don't muscle it.

One shot that I've learnt to play (I play English pool) which I never see anyone else do even when it's the most advantageous option, is the jump shot in which you pot the object ball and jump the white after the fact, as normal jump shots aren't allowed in English pool it makes more sense but could still be very viable in American pool. If you have to get to the other side of the table and a ball is blocking the direct path you can raise your cue a fair amount in order to pot the ball and jump the white over the ball blocking the path. Also good to jump over a group of balls that you might not want to disturb or are blocking your path aswell.
That is a useful shot, and American pool players certainly use it when necessary. See shot A21 in BU Exam III here:

Good video! I try not use too much english on the cue ball because I have a tendency to get myself into too much trouble position wise. Sometimes you have to but if you realize any shot is better than hiding yourself you tend to take what you can reasonably get.
Sidespin definitely takes a long time to master, but it is a very important part of the game. FYI, when you are ready to dedicate more time to this, I have lots of good videos and other resources here:

Dave, I rarely watch one of your videos without gaining at least some valuable bit, and this time it was the ball first cushion frozen shot to get English to "take". That makes sense, as I suspect the cushion "robs" some spin, and the ball hit afterward likely changes the resultant cue ball angle out significantly, negating more of the sidespin angle modification. It is not to me, inherently obvious to me, though. If I have this thinking muddled, or totally hosed, feel free to elaborate. I will explore this tomorrow at the hall (today is Thanksgiving)...Happy Turkey Day, Dave! ;-) And as an engineer, I always enjoy your physics take on pool when some is offered. Keep on postin' dude, it IS appreciated. It might be interesting to see one of your slow-mo "physics" vids of this "phenomenon". I will look. This particular knowledge looks VERY useful.
I'm finally getting to the point where I'm running 5-6 balls consistently on 8 ball, with run-outs becoming more frequent. Maybe another year or two, I'll actually be able to say I'm STARTING to learn how to play this game. Unfortunately, doing that on an eight ball table with the BETTER guys I play against just greatly INCREASES their chance of running out the leavings. One guy a while ago said that I was winning, but he was doing all the work, and I said, yes, yes you are, and feel free to keep it up.
I was watching Justin Hall playing some one pocket at our hall (Clicks Casselbery) the other day....MAN, guys at that level are nearly pool gods! The "far out" shots he was trying were nuts, I wouldn't have even THOUGHT of or seen most of them, and he was CONVERTING them at a ridiculously high percentage, or advantageously moving stuff and leaving nothing at a minimum. At one point he made what I thought was a particularly nice run out (7, I think) on a pretty messed up table and nobody said a word. He sat down a couple of feet away from me, and I said "Geez, you don't get "nice run out" from anyone for anything, they just EXPECT it." He smiled a big smile, and I said "Nice Run Out."
I'm embarrassed to say I attempted to follow my ball behind one of my opponents into the pocket, and I failed, and my opponent, who is quite knowledgeable, said draw/ medium speed. My thought was "I KNOW that, thanks to a response from Dr. Dave years back, and completely FORGOT to implement it. Sorry Dave, I HATE losing games on "forgotten" knowledge. Oh well, I beat him last time around (with significant handicap, unfortunately, but it was close even without it). Sometimes I think handicap leagues are a HANDICAP to advancement, to some degree. Having to claw your way up has some advantages, as far as learning curve steepness, at least for me. Makes me laugh to think of the guys that said things like they have FORGOTTEN more than I knew about pool. Actually likely true.
If the sidespin is "reverse," the cushion will rob some (or all) of the spin. However, if the sidespin in "running," very little (if any) spin is lost, and spin can even be gained. If you or others don't know this terminology very well, check out the following page:

The purpose for going rail first is to allow the CB to come off close to the OB tangent line, and/or to have the spin "take" on the opposite rail. A good example of the latter strategy is in the following video:

I got it from Robert Byrne (late, great instructional author). When I heard he wanted to sell his table, I was the first to contact him. I thought it would be nice to have a piece of history, and I feel like I honor him every time I film something new on his old table.

As someone who is very much an amateur at pool, half of this looks like straight-up magic lmao. It just adds to my appreciation of this game, how such small changes in where you strike the cue ball can make such huge differences to how the ball moves and interacts with everything around it.

- is smooth
- stays clean
- is easy to clean
- doesn't scratch or nick
- should stay straight forever
- has the amount of CB deflection (squirt) I like in a cue
Ive always wanted to be a good pool player just for fun not for tournaments just own self satisfaction that i accomplished something.. i just love the game, same with darts, same with bowling, shuffleboard lol im pretty good at bowling not to shabby at darts as well my problem is i never have time to practice..

Even after almost 40 years of playing, I still can not execute a jump shot. For some reason, I can not get the cue ball to leave the table. I know there's a technique to it & I've had many people try to explain it & demonstrate it but I can not seem to make it happen myself. To compensate for this lack of jumping skill, I've become quite proficient in banking & masse shots. I'll have to look to see if you have a video covering just jump shots. Your videos help tremendously. Keep 'em coming Dr. Dave!

This is great Dr. Dave! Quick question, with cushion first or cushion and rail same time shots, is the cushion almost always compressed to some degree? Or is it only at fast speeds that the cushion compresses? Thank you!!

From what I understand, aiming for the rail and ball or rail first is useful for stun shots, steep angles when using running spin, and for situations when cue ball position is a major factor, but other than that it’s best to shoot at the ball as if the cushion was not there?
I’ve been watching a lot of your rail shot content and it’s been really helpful. I use to try to shoot cushion first or for the rail and cushion at the same time and it would usually throw and miss. Now I’m “shooting as if the cushion isn’t there” at the ball with a bit more speed to reduce throw and it’s going right in the pocket! I’ll add gearing English especially t slower speeds as well. Especially on this Diamond table with stiff cushions I would miss bad, but not I feel a lot more in control and confident and just wanted to make sure I was understanding the “under the hood” principles correctly.

Hey Dr. Dave...have you ever played in major tournaments in Las Vegas or anywhere? You seem to have the knowledge and game to win tournaments.
I have played in amateur league tournaments in Vegas (e.g., VNEA), but no pro events. I am a professional instructor and an instructional author, not a professional player.
Quick question just bought a jump cue, am i supposed to drive it thru the ball or immediately go soft as soon as my tip touches the ball?

I think reverse English shot may be displayed on your cue ball diagram wrong. Should of been top right. Great video.
Thank you for pointing this out. Obviously, you are correct. Hopefully, people can figure this out based on the action of the shot. If the CB goes to the right off the cushion, it must be right sidespin.

Yep, I caught that as well. It's at 3:04. Also another one at 3:19. There might be more but I ran out of time to look for them. You should fix this DrDave or at least mention them in your notes. Very confusing for the novice! Otherwise it's a great video.

Ben Schlea The links in the video description provide detailed info and videos for every topic in this video. If I covered ever detail in every video, every video would be an hour long or more. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
Practice the shots he shoots in the video for starters. He provides tip position, you have to put in the work.

And I have suggestion too.. how about you make a video about terms use in Pool like english for example because I believe there is so many new comer in pool would raised their eyebrow when they hear anyone say “ apply english “... or “ kick it “ etc... @@DrDaveBilliards I had absolutely no idea there was even strategy at all. I just thought everybody, including pros, just tried to get it in while sort of trying to get the cue ball set up for the next shot. But instead this is much more like chess than anything out there. I mean, golf is all about shot-making. It's nothing like the complexities involved in this game combined with the shot making. It really should be an Olympic sport, and I also mean "sport" especially when we're calling golf and curling a sport for example).

Dave, I noticed that when pros shoot a long corner shot at a shallow angle, they shoot at the cushion first, about 1 diamond before the pocket. What kind of shot is that? Do you have any recommendations on when to use it and how to aim it?
This depends on the table and the shot speed. Most tables accept the ball with a cushion-first hit, especially at slow speed. For more info, see:

I wanted to buy the stream of the videos,but when I saw it was VIMEO that is running the videos I back up because I bought another series (not billiards related)I was able to see only 2 videos and lost my money on the second set (not ...) I was able to get my money back because it was a dispute with credit card.I hope you don’t have any complaints. The other concern is that the demonstration you did is fabulous but little teaching.
