Smelling Like Fire is a Feature: PowerColor RX 5600 XT Red Dragon Review

- It's unacceptable that a video card can go out the door with a VBIOS that doesn't even spin the fans until 100 degrees, even if it's fixed later. Test your products!
Sponsor: Corsair Virtuoso Wireless Headset (Amazon - geni.us/5T4Rm)
PowerColor did ultimately release a good VBIOS for its card, but the card still loses in multiple ways to the Sapphire RX 5600 XT Pulse. The Pulse has better serviceability and maintenance options with socketable fans, it costs the same as the Red Dragon (at time of writing), it's got higher frequencies, and it's superior in thermals. There aren't really any reasons to buy the Red Dragon other than if you (1) hate how the Pulse looks or (2) can't get anything else. It's not a "bad" card with the new VBIOS, it's just not competitive. With the original VBIOS and first round of public updates, though, we're experiencing second-hand embarrassment that PowerColor would let VBIOSes out the door with fans that don't even spin. It's shameful, really, and it seems like no one even tested the product. The fact that one reviewer can find so many issues in a span of a 5-6 hour benchmark is laughable for PowerColor, which presumably employs engineers and technicians aplenty as compared to us.

The fact that you literally only had to apply the VBIOS and run any application at all to find these issues is embarrassing for PowerColor, and these went public, too, not just to reviewers. Sure, they eventually fixed it, but even when the card is "fine," it's not competitive.

So hot it breathes fire.

It already delivered this with the 5700 launch and botched bios updates, throttling out of the box and other issues. They should have waited six months. Regardless of performance they set themselves back an entire generation of GPUs now. Not everyone revisits cards and buys based on fixes and bios updates. It is nothing short of a disaster and cost them sales they should have had. They need to fire whomever is in charge of the GPU sector and server market and be aggressive as they are in the Desktop/Enthusiast market. It is the only market they have succeeded in, even though they should have decimated the server market and did near nothing with Epyc, even with the disastrous shit Intel did. They gained almost nothing in that sector, what in the actual FUCK! I would love to see them deliver in server/GPU but even when they can and do deliver, they fail due to marketing or lack of partnerships or whatever the fuck. It is really sad, when they cannot gain market-share due to negligence on their own part. Because it might be too late for the server sector, GPU market might recover if they can keep improving and not have more shit launches with thermal throttling cards out of the box that still have issues after bios updates. It is disheartening because nVidia needs more of a check then Intel did, but it doesn't seem like AMD is up to the task just yet, even on the low end where they always did well.

To be fair, most of the 5K Navi launch has been a joke saved only partially from bios updates. They should have held the entire launch back six months and seen 5700s right now instead of 5600s that are failing. I guess it is true to name, HEY HEY LOOK AT ME, THE ANNOYING BITCH THAT EVERYONE WISHED WOULD DIE IN OCARINA OF TIME, NAVI. A truly fitting name. Better luck next year AMD.
Don't you mean literal flaming dumpster fire.
-Nvidia fan
NOPE, Radeon dept failure Why cant they just release 5600 xt with no need to update bios? Its their fault AIB manufacturers are suffering. They are too bothered with being competitive with Nvidia instead of really trying to overtake them.
@Douglas Gray that coil whine is slowly getting better though.
Every time I think my card is faulty I go online and realise it's just life living with AMD drivers
There must be some really talented guys at AMD who are tearing their hair out right now. They've designed a fundamentally excellent GPU but stupid mistakes in deployment and marketing have damaged it's image.
What's worse was it was so easily avoidable. All they had to do was leave the damn card alone and just reduce the price by $20-$30. They'd have then been showered in praise, instead of scorn.
@Ivan Dobrev AMD margins are fine (35% or so across the portfolio). This is just the Radeon division trying to take advantage of the inflated pricing nVidia created with Turing. AMD could have released the RX 5700 at its originally intended price of $280ish (as the RX 690 name before rebranding gave away) and still had plenty of margin.
@SmashStomp Inc yup and that's why I returned my 5700xt and joined up with the green team.
@SmashStomp Inc yeah, that's kind of what I was getting at. AMDs own marketing team and middle managers are probably not too popular with their tech guys.

It DID work. It quickly started to smell like charcoal and my ex's nephew shouts. 'Why is it screaming?'
The fans are protesting but he is stood right next to the thing. A few seconds later, he says 'I see FIRE'.
The old coot says 'That's just the lighting, it's supposed to look like that'.
I walk over to the compute. Not only is it ON FIRE (smoke and some actual flame coming out of the PSU fan) but it is shaking back and forth. I pull the cable from the wall socket and grap a fire blanket but as I can't directly smother the flames it gets to burn through the oxygen in the case before it goes out. Let's hope they keep it up and don't go the way I. E. MSI went
Except there warranty blows for resale.
Not in the loop, where is/was MSI going
I'm really glad that Steve usually praises for serviceability, ease of maintenance and repair friendliness, like with the fans for the sapphire pulse for example.
But I'm really baffled why he's disregarding the fuses on the pulse so easily. I know, that not many people out there try to repair their own GPU's but still, if the fuses help Sapphire to easier repair the card, than it's going to also help everyone else, which is especially important if the card is already out of warranty.
Being able to bring back a dead GPU is great, reduces e-waste and can save you lots of money. So while the fuses don't usually do much for the average consumer, they're still a really great addition.
For an end user the mention of a fuse would imply security in the event of a power surge or whatnot. He's merely pointing out that these aren't those kinds of fuses and not to mistake them as such. Buildzoid goes a bit more in depth on this, but not by much, Steve gave the gist of it just fine here.

I loled so much at this.
I took delivery on one of these on Feb 3, so I did apply the new VBIOS update. I was happy the fans were spinning (I had concerns about this before I bought it based on jayz review - but I didn’t realize why it was fixed).
But this thing was buggy af. Some of it is likely AMD’s drivers, but after I updated the VBIOS I rebooted and I just had a black screen. I thought oh no I bricked it. But I booted with the silent bios which I didn’t touch and then Windows got stuck at the Welcome screen. Eventually I did another DDU and somehow I got it to fully booted.
But then some games just wouldn’t load sometimes - a reboot would fix it, but I never saw this in my 1660 Super.
Then the final nail in the coffin - I was watching a UA-cam video and I go to make it full screen and bam - green screen. I’ve never seen anything like it. It was back in its box and on its way back to amazon at that point.
What a shame.

Powercolor the zotac of amd - garbage
Saphire the evga of amd - well built
Zotax used to make some pretty baller low profile cards. Wish they considered keeping that niche up
@@victorsegoviapalacios4710 although Powercolor is an AMD exclusive partner, only they much inferior compared to Sapphire
@@AimanHilmiAHJ Well, their Vega56 Red Dragon was one of the best Vega cards out there (Tied with the Pulse tbh), so it really is hit and miss with them.
@@Azraleee yea true, Sapphire is more consistent throughout the years
Their 5700 XT cards are excellent
So glad UA-cam has a playback speed option
Navi cards are a bruh moment
Kinda. I have the 5700 XT and it's everything I've dreamed of, and more, but the twist is the unexpected wonky drivers
@Paulo Jorge Cruz Pereira Rodrigues Melo e Almeida 5700xts werent even meant to hit 80 class nvidia cards.
But funny part is a oc 5700xt can run with a 2080 and almost beat it.
This also happened with some of the early 5700 Red Dragons. I was told to update the VBIOS to the 9/15 one because the fans would read over 65500 rpm even though they weren't spinning.
omg tahts laud
The extreme heat amd memes are relevant again.
They've never gone away.
Even though it's Powercolor's fault but ok...
Nice catch, looking forward to the AT&T video Steve :)
"the same very original joke everyone else is making"
Typical powercolor - from our mining farms (~100GPUs) only powercolor GPUs have needed RMA, and they required it quite swiftly. All others have been quite good :)
One must wonder, how does Corsair come up with such a strange name for headset? Virtuoso? ugh
Yeah, really, how could they use a music related italian word for their Headset, it is inconceivable not to use English Words. ^^ :P
The age-old saying applies. Just wait a bit before purchasing.
Hmm, think I'll skip all this and stick with Nvidia.
wanted to buy a 5700xt and ended up buying a 2070 super trio. i dont regret it a bit
Sapphire has always been the go-to choice since ATi stopped their own manufacturing.
remember AMD says 110c is perfectly normal
Whats the problem with buying a 400 $ gpu that would last you 3 weeks you brainwashed intel nvidia fanboy ???
@@silure9502 lol having a cold one and cracking some wiseass comments.
@@charlesballiet7074 Yeah whatever, 65db for a card is totally okay, hater !!
Powercolor also makes a dual fan model with a very similar cooler, minus the red dragon branding. I haven't seen any tests done on it
For now it's jut disaster after disaster
Gewel should I get rx 580 8gb for war thunder
All you Ayymd fans always shit on Nvidia but now Ayymd is becoming even more of a dimpster fire than it was before. Heres is some word of advice, why don't you all go buy a Nvidia card or use an operating system that doesn't use as many resources as windows 10 does.
-Nvidia Fan
you got the full dragon user experience
Damn, Red Dragon so confident in the cooler design it come with Passive cooler.
5600XT Pulse now comes with the upgraded bios.
Funny how PowerColor has put thermal pads for the two top memory chips on the heatsink even though those are not populated on the card. Meanwhile MSI didn't feel they had to accommodate full size thermal pads for those two chips on their 5700 XT Evoke and Mech OC that did have those populated...
You can say the Red Dragon breathes Fire
🔥🐲
I paid a bit extra to get a really nice 5700 XT model and luckily, it doesn't smell like burning electronics, it just smells like a win. Only issue i really had with it is a bit of driver issues but nothing bad. Temps seem pretty good. My first AMD card in years
Same with me, my overheating has started to stop and now driver issues are starting
Finally the Red Dragon name makes sense!
