- If your sprinkler system won't turn on, this is the first and most basic step to check.
The backflow preventer or double check valve assembly is where water is prevented from migrating back into the city supply. It can also be a prime suspect when sprinkler or irrigation systems fail to start up after years of neglect.

Just wanna mention that this video helped me tremendously, my sprinkler quit working, I was afraid that It was the control panel, was about to look into changing it out, then saw this video and remembered that the city recently changed out the back flow and it was not turned to open. Problem solved. Thanks a bunch...👍👍

Question on insulation: Is it ideal to insulate the piping and back flow preventer? What are the benefits? I ask because I live in an housing community with an hola and I have to pay for an inspector to check my back flow who sends the report to my utility company? Also. Since this is a property of the city, are they not required to replace it (back flow).

I just purchased a home with a 8 zone sprinkler system. Every time I run the sprinklers all the zones turn on at the same time. Do you happen to know what the issue could be? Thanks.

I had a question. Our sprinkler system has started not shutting off after it goes through all the zones. It goes through all the zones and then just starts back at 1 and keeps going until I manually go turn it off and then back to auto. Any ideas? Thanks for any help!
Are you saying it keeps going as in 'zone one keeps going until I shut it off' or it keeps going as in 'it keeps repeating the zones forever, 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4'?
Hmm, does zone one still run while the others are running as well? You may have a bad valve on zone one, there could be dirt in the rubber diaphragm.
@@CopperCreekCuts Thank you so much for the reply. It keeps repeating the zones forever. When it finishes that last zone it starts back at 1 and then goes to 2, 3, ..... No, each zone shuts off when it is done like it should, it just doesn't end after the last zone.
i don't have an irrigation license, but what is involved when performing a sprinkler check on an HOA scope of work?
Depends 100% on the HOA and what they want. I would assume same as residential: the backflow preventers (if present), controllers, and heads. Big ones might have other systems I don't know about.

Hi! When I turn the valve on manually with a screw driver, some water starts spraying out the side of the solenoid (no water comes out the sprinkler heads). Also, if I try to activate the zone from my control box, the solenoid just buzzed, but no water sprays out anywhere. Thoughts?

@@juanlmartinez3718 yes, there was a small white filter tab inside the diaphragm that broke off. That little piece was causing all the problems. I just had to buy a cheap diaphragm replacement kit (4.98 at Home Depot) and I took the white tab off and put it on my existing diaphragm.
Are you required as "a company" to know your way around that or is it something you do in addition to your normal lawn care duties as an another source of income? Also, how expensive is "very expensive"? Like a 100$?
I mean, if it is your company you can do however much or however little you want. I have heard of some lawn guys who only mow. No string trimming/edging. They are probably 'do it for beer money' types, but still, you pick and choose what you will offer to clients. On Amazon these things are going for $150-$200 depending on seller. Mine is a little cheaper from a supply house an hour away.
Should’ve used schedule 80 toe nipples, street 90, and a union. A union would allow you to simply unscrew the back flow and take it away without cutting any pipe.
Unfortunately, no. Everything has to be cemented in place, which means unions won't turn. Threaded unions are connecting the backflow preventer to the pvc, but that doesn't mean you can remove it via threads, as turning one side to loosen means you are tightening the other.
So how much did they pay for the back flow preventer? What do these go for?
Price will vary based on your location and what size you get, but I think the specific model I replaced are between $150/$200 on Amazon depending on seller.
Do those have to be inspected by the city?

Hey Brad. Randomly, sprinkler head started leaking at the top and won't stay up. It worked fine for years and the lazy lawn dude says it's the pressure. Not sure what happened. I bought a brand new sprinkler. Unscrewed old one, and replaced the whole unit. Same thing. Possible reasons why?
Sounds like low pressure somewhere upstream. Could be blockage or cracked supply line. Check for wet spots in the ground.

Oh yes. Multiple buried/trapped heads, one of the rotors in a zone didn't rotate, super finicky controller in the garage, and one of the valves would stay open for several minutes after the controller attempted to close it.
