    This video is almost worst than the first one because you’re advertising that is “the right way” to cut the trees. Many things here might work for you but but aren’t advisable and are unsafe. Just stick to what you know and keep doing that

      Some people dont know they shoukd make a formal guide of a variety of scenarios regard all sizes of trees instead of fooling around with alot edge cases.

  • @Grakoham
    @Grakoham 6 років тому +24

    First problem. Horizontal cut is too deep. Second problem. Your notch didn’t reach the back of your horizontal cut; this, paired with the fact that you leave no hinge wood, means that the tree can twist, and go wherever it wants. 3rd. No hinge wood; the hinge wood is what guides the tree as it falls - the angle of your face cut determines how far the tree will fall before if breaks the hinge. 4th. What you said about needing the make the bottom of the face cut at the same level as the back cut - having it up a couple inches is good as long as you don’t break the vertical fibres completely, which is easier to do if your cuts are at different levels. Not sure if that is what you were referencing. Really understanding the physics of what is happening is the safest way to fell a tree, for the most part.

    Every cut was still wrong!!!! He was cutting through his hinge would by not lining up his notch and going too far, also you want the back cut an inch or two above your notch.

      @joegosselin2888 6 років тому +3

      Flush works as well but for beginners like these guys an inch or two higher would be better..when pushing or pulling a tree you want too cut it below your notch so the tree can’t slide off the stump..

    Mr. Stan, with all due respect, stick to landscaping. Almost none of the techniques you showed in this video are safe. People will watch this video and take it as instructions for felling their first tree. That tree might be their last if they follow these techniques. By the way I`m 16 and run a small tree business and follow your channel for some advice. Every other video of your's I've watched is excellent, just stick to landscaping. Have a great day :)

  • @Badgermatt-nc5nr
    @Badgermatt-nc5nr 6 років тому +93

    Wow, still did it all wrong. Notch should be flat top, angle on bottom and the back cut should be higher than the notch to create a hinge to stop the tree from twisting and to help direct it towards the notch and where you want it to fall and to help prevent it from falling back towards the sawyer. Don't believe me? Watch a few videos from tree service cutters or professional tree fellers.

    • @Grakoham
      @Grakoham 6 років тому +10

      The notch doesn’t have to be a Humboldt the conventional way also works. But I agree with you completely. The lack of hingewood left (none actually) scared me.

    • @FishFind3000
      @FishFind3000 6 років тому +9

      The hinge can bye up or down but everything else was wrong. Also just cuz you put a notch doesn’t mean it’s gonna go there you need to understand where the lean is and how the trees gonna react.

    • @Nderak
      @Nderak 6 років тому

      I found out about notches the hard way. I cut my notch, and proclaimed to my audience that the tree would precisely far in a certain area. I then finished cutting it down, and it fell, it fell precisely all right, int he direction of the notch exactly, but I put my notch 75º the wrong heading SMH. Nothing got hurt or damaged though, but there was a good laugh at my expense.

    I like watching these videos. My buddies and I have to go up every year to work on my other buddy's family's deer hunting cabin. We've found that we need to down trees, clear trails, put in drainage for trails, and other random crap that has not been done for 30 years. I always learn something useful when I watch this video.
    The cabin is up in Motley. You probably know the area.
    We've done correct and incorrect tree clearing. We want to bring skids, but the soil is wet, so don't want that hassle. We usually burn the stumps out. What that cabin needs is an actual tractor for it's hydraulics.
    Still though, really fun to watch these videos.

    Ok Stanley, tree guys are absolutely brutal to each other in video comments. You have no shot as a general contractor of doing it right in the first place in their eyes. But you give us plenty of ammunition. Mostly this video shows you know almost enough to stay out of serious trouble. The back cut does have to be above the bottom of the notch. It keeps you from cutting through the hinge wood, which you do. Tree guys dont hate other contractors, we just dont like them trying to do our job. It really isnt so simple anyone can do it.

    Huh glad everyone already said what i wanted to say about those 'techniques'

  • @spelunkerd
    @spelunkerd 4 роки тому

    Worksafe BC did a 17 video series here on UA-cam on faller safety, and although it is a little dated the information is worth going through. Their website have specific guidelines as well. They describe specific accidents, which is always useful for focusing attention. When you watch a real pro fell a tree, it is surprising how much attention they give to the face cut, being certain that the two cuts of the face meet to precisely sculpt the front of the hinge. As you say, this is a good illustration that your friend has no understanding of why a good hinge is critical. Notice that his horizontal face cut goes way too far back, which completely destroys the integrity of the hinge. The face cut is supposed to be only 1/3 of the way through the tree, and they specifically prohibit the Dutchmans like this because they create instability of the hinge and rotation of the stem as the tree falls. Of note, the industry standard for professional fallers in BC allows the back cut to be up to an inch above the horizontal part of the face cut, but not below with standard felling techniques. Their reasoning is that a small step at the back of the stump will help to prevent the stem from dangerously sliding backwards as the tree falls (and maybe reduce the chance of a barber chair). It's all about safety.

  • @Brockjn
    @Brockjn 5 років тому

    Wow. Watch wranglerstar on felling. You need hingewood and a 2" box above wedge cut to prevent twist. Also cut your wedge cut in a comfortable height if possible. Close to the ground right away only serves as another possible hazard.

  • @DanielSvensson666
    @DanielSvensson666 5 років тому

    Ok, I see 2 issues done with the "proper" way to cut doen a tree that you show, I went to scool here in Sweden to learn that stuff.
    1: The bottom cut of the notch looked a bit deep but that may have just been the camera angle.
    2: After making the notch NEVER walk in front of the tree, things can go VERY wrong and have the tree fall. It might be slightly rotten inside and fall by a strong gust of wind.
    Besides that, it looks great.
    Oh, also, another reason for steelntoe boots, if the saw hits your foot, it will be way less likely to chop any toes off.

    I could not tell which was the Right Way and the Wrong Way to cut down a tree- both ways looked massively dangerous.

    Stan, road trip down to Stewartville and cut some trees with me at Bluff Country Tree Service LLC. I can offer some tips and tricks to improve safety and efficiency. Bottom line is you got the job accomplished with no injuries, but this is dangerous work and while we can't totally eliminate all risk, with the proper techniques we can mitigate that risk to an acceptable level.

    Oh my God leave the saw work to somebody that knows how to or I should say the professionals before somebody dies it don't take much when everything you do is wrong.

    Why on earth don't you leave some hinge (or holding) wood? That keeps the fall under directional control. Why to you over cut when doing your notch? The top and bottom cuts should come together exactly so that they don't bust out the hinge (which you don't have anyway).

    So, yes, I am late in the day to comment - but, Mistake #1 is: don't work till your so tired you make the worst mistake, drop the still moving chain on your leg because your tired. My son nearly bleed to death after the chain went into his thigh. He and dad were 45 min from the nearest help. He lived to tell the tale and has a wicked scar for the show. There is no good reason to work foolishly.

    Why don't you put an angle in your back cut?? It has saved me once or twice!! May pinch the saw but won't fall the wrong direction!

    If this guy is cutting trees wrong people would be super angry watching me. Shorts and a undershirt up a 32 foot ladder with a bow saw - scrambled down the ladder before half a tree trunk fell and slid down the side rails of a ladder lol. I made it out in time tho

    Mate, you are the man when it comes to walls, but you should "bough out" on trees. Everything you are teaching here is wrong. And dangerous. If you line up your cuts, when the tree starts to fall it might slide backwards. That's why you create a level, stepped cut. If you cut through your hinge and don't leave a clean "V", the tree can fall any direction at all.

    Holy crap That isn't how you cut the tree. You want hinge wood left on the stump. Omg you're going to get someone hurt

    maybe you should show how to PROPERLY cut down a tree, when felling a tree you want to cut 2-4 in. above the notch, not even to the notch.

    The tree would fall the right if his first cut lined up with his wedge cut as there is no hinge wood to direct the tree

  • @viscache1
    @viscache1 6 років тому

    There SHOULD be an inch to 3” hinge to control the fell. Check with a professional timber feller and give out safer information. Finally...most people with a chainsaw in the shed are not qualified to cut down a tree safely! Yeah..there are professionals
