The story arc concerning the Asgard always bugged me. You can see through the entire series that the Asgard fought to rid themselves of the replicators, they found the survivor of a generational ship which could lead to clues about their cloning process to refine it and reverse the deleterious effects. They could have even cloned a copy of that ancestor a few hundred times and used it as a means to propagate their species again, but the series finale has them committing mass suicide? It was like WTF...where the hell did that come from?! I don't agree with the writers and how they handled the end of the Asgard nor agree that the Asgard should have all died off either.
Also... It was the endless cloning that got them in the situation they were in.. A copy of a copy of a copy {ad nauseum} cloning the generational ships crew would not have saved them
John Bridges its stupid that they cant solve the problem. I can understand that their bodies need to be able to contain Asgard knowledge, but thats why its science fiction. Make something up ! Ascend them, dont kill them.
The Asgard were essentially masters of genetics, they would have had to have been to clone that many times. They easily could have manipulated the clone of the ancestor to maintain the knowledge they required, but even if they didn't the goal would have been to preserve their species, not reintroduce fresh DNA to start a new line of cloning. So transferring their minds to a compatible body would have been irrelevant as the goal would have been to reintroduce sexual reproduction and teach the offspring the ways of the Asgard so as to pass it along.
If you were to go as far as to say cloning the ship's crew over and over and over yes, but a few hundred clones based off one or two individuals would have been enough to allow reproduction the natural way to occur without any significant cellular degradation which would take thousands of more times. Plus you would be cloning off a single individual not cloning C from B from A...it would be more like 100 Bs cloned from A. In that regard it would have easily been doable and sure they would have to give up cloning and not be able to transfer their consciousness but it would allow the species to continue to exist.
If that Lost Tribe of the Asgard in the Pegasus galaxy ever discover that Earth is in possession of the Asgard Core, containing all of their acquired knowledge... that would probably be very, very bad.
Actually they explicitely say they do not have resources to rebuild their technology... they can likely do it but rather paranoidly hid under the radar of Wraith. Their technology is likely somewhat inferior to what Ida asgard had... but even 1000 years mothballed vanir scoutship which could barely house puddle jumper (in novels) could get to Milky way in 2 days. Rivaling Deadalus with ZPM. (and well - they did promise to never trouble Earth again when Ran chose to help them)
If you remember, 2 out of 3 of their starships were destroyed in battle with the Travelers, who have pretty basic technology. Its even possible that all that remains of the Vanir is on that last ship, so They may be facing the threat of extinction.
Ken Jett I think that I write to Metro Goldvin Mayer to good idea about SGU, but I never find mail :(.If you want know what is my idea my Skype is matko321618
I love how humans become the 5th great race in the stargate universe, all while the entire stargate program is kept a secret. Like i can just imagine the declassification of the stargate program. "so aliens exist, we have this portal thing to instantaneously travel between worlds. and we have starships as well, we built them off alien tech. In the time of our secret stargate program, (say 20ish years) we have freed the galaxy from a race of parasitic worms who like to play god, defeated a bunch of godlike 'ascended beings' that have superpowers from another galaxy, destroyed some planets and solar systems along the way, began colonizing another galaxy that is filled will vampire monsters, who we are at war with. oh and we inherited all the technology of one of the most technologically advance civilizations in the known universe because we saved their asses a few times." did i miss anything?
Kyle A you forgot the „ oh and we time traveled a few times sometimes by accident and sometimes intentionally to fix our minor fuck ups part “ also „ Parallel universes Exist we saved several and had some of their inhabitants over they are really chill neighbors oh yeah and just to be clear by saving a parallel universe we mean we traveled there and back really no big deal” Not sure I could work in the trust fuck up but hey capitalism is great right ? (It’s not) Also somehow I want to work in the Aschen part but I can’t think of anything other then “ oh yes and we actually stoped the world being taken over by space Nazis that have no sense of humor and it involved the time travel thingy we mentioned earlier but no big deal
Lt. jogs Generals elbow, "Sir You left out the Milky way is populated by descendants from Earths various time periods, The Reoccurring Replicater problem and that 90% of those invasions the past 20 years were also true."
This has always bothered me. If I lived in the stargate universe I would be pissed. You mean this entire time the government has made allies with alien species and has had secret wars with some and they ain’t tell us that we almost got invaded and wiped out a few times? I would be pissed
Yeah but as mentioned earlier, the Nox are pacifists and isolationists. And they simply don't care with what happens outside their world as they can simply hide from any potential threat if needed.
They'll intervene as intermediaries when needed, as in the case of Skaara. But yea, they no longer deal with the events going on in the galaxy as a whole. Maybe they figured that without the ancients they could no longer deal with the new powers that came about within the galaxy. Or maybe they've always been isolationists but the Ancient's influence allowed them to be open to the idea of a partnership with the 3 other races. Plot hole? Maybe.
Obvious plot hole. And i'M not really suprised. On the other hand SGC should have at least tried to establish relations with them again after the ORI war. If only to tell them that the asgard are gone and that they de facto acknowledged them(humans) as the 5th race. Or something along those lines
He meant only that the Asgard are the last of the four races in the alliance which still take substantive action in galactic affairs ... you're just nit picking. He had already said the Nox were isolationists and the Ancients and Furlings were gone, but you either didn't care or weren't listening, or don't know how to read implication.

Could stargate be added to netflix pls... I would realy want to watch all of the stargate epicniss but im not ready to spend like honderds of euros to watch it all
I don't get why kill Asgard in the last episode, it would have been more satisfying to have them ascend. Possibly using tech recovered from Atlantis, that way the Asgard gift to the Tauri would have been out of gratitude
Jakub Policht isnt do to cloning? Also what's with the Pegasus asgard? They pretty much said their all good and we don't even know how many there were besides the ones on the 3 ancient ships 2 of which were distroyed.
Kurzweil, our most noted computer scientists says that as our communication with computers and other people increased, we would develop another cortex over our existing ones which he called the neocortex. In a sense this might be the beginnings of a hive mind but it would mean that the concept of self would extend beyond the individual organism to the community and the access to the computers. It could be that individual ascension would be seen as only a portion of what they considered themselves ascending. It could also be that they had modified their genome to create more of a neocortex facilitating both the neural link communication and offering a portion of their brain to the community neocortex hence reverting to earlier genomes would also mean loosing a portion of what they considered themselves. Aside from the colony in the Pegasus galaxy, they did not have multiple colonies as would be expected of a civilisation capable of interstellar travel. It could be that interstellar communications interfered with this neocortex so they did not want to be separated from their community for long or have many of their members separated from the community. The Asgard's in the Pegasus galaxy seemed to have more technologic implants so they may predate the genome changes to integrate biologically closer to the neocortex hence not suffer the detriment if the modifications. It could be that the mass suicide was a way of ascending as a community on the assumption that ascended beings had access to far more knowledge, the loss of integration with the digital databases would not be a concern. Of course if they formed a hive mind that decided to suppress individual consciousness to dedicate more to the hive mind and used primary technology instead of genetic manipulations, you would have the Borg or the Cybermen. Perhaps the Asgard's in the Pegasus galaxy are on this route.
Look for the SGA fifth season two-parter "First Contact" and "The Lost Tribe" for the Vanir! This is my biggest regret about never getting a sixth season of Atlantis.
Guess i will have to finish my rewatch of Atlantis to see this, Didn't even remember that episode, stopped at the end of Season 4 because it was so off tempo compared to the first 3 seasons.
Im speechless when i know about the vanir. That was some awesome idea! I didnt know about that cos im having a hard time watching SGA for reasons. After knowing this. I really want to watch SGA. But still to know that the show was cancelled i think i dont want to waste my time. I really wish there is some kind of alternate stargate adaptation where they at least going for some endings and ends it. Even Naruto has ending. Ps : One of the reason I have a hard time to watch Anlantis because. Im expecting to see some Gods like Poseidon, Mercury or something related. Instead they give us some Aliens. Btw thats just an opinion.
From wiki , Asgard may not be extinct, from the official continuation novels Stargate Atlantis Legacy: Unasceneded and The Third Path, I quote: " These Asgard, the Vanir, chase Weir in hopes of getting to Ran who Ascended before the Asgard genetic degradation began. Their hope is they can use Ran's DNA and eggs to help save their race. In the end, Weir helps them communicate with Ran using an Ancient shrine on Earth. Ran returns to mortal form and agrees to aid the Vanir in saving their race, though she informs them she can't assure them of success and they might not return to what they once were even if they do succeed. The Vanir then depart Earth with Ran, promising to no longer be a problem to the humans." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asgard_(Stargate) So the Asgard may not be extinct, based on official cannon novels and could very well return in the future.
I would love to see that in the moment of the explosion, some of the ancients that were part of the treaties and friendly to the asgard, helped them to ascend.
I don't think they could. Like O'Neil being revived over and over eventually brought him close to not being able to acend. Probably cloning did the same thing
@@thecoolnerdplaysvr5674 I guess it could be argued that since they transfer their essence from body to body regularly they should be super easy to ascend lol.
What I love is how this show was becoming Star Trek on steroids. Instead of humans being at the bottom of the technological food chain. Humans were gifted the best technology by the Asgard. The slaves are now a superpower. The irony of it all.
Great video I'm glad gateworld is finally putting stuff regularly on UA-cam because I don't know what happened to gate world in the past five or so years but it is an ad riddled mess I can't look at anything without 15 ads on the screen or popping up an overriding the audio of my computer or phone disturbing what I am reading. now this may have changed since the last time I went on gateworld but it was perhaps six months ago. Hope that gets fixed I like gateworld but it discourages new people when everything is monetized.
Sorry you've had a bad experience on the site, Au7sten. Online advertising is a challenging and ever-changing landscape, and as an independent fan site we have to monetize with ads in order to exist. We're always looking to fine-tune and strike a better balance, so I'm grateful for your feedback.
@@GateWorldDotNet I understand some monetization you have to sustain the site I have no problem with a few little ads down at the bottom of the screen or to the right but when they try and take all the attention it just kind of ruins the experience. Thank you for responding but please don't take this as hate speech or anything, just constructive criticism I hope you guys can work it out overtime.
Black eyes, dull yellow skin, sharp eyelid ridges around the oval socket's. Long neck's, slender bodies and a very large cranium. Taller than human's.....7 feet tall. Extremely strong 3rd eye that leaves a hypnotic pulse around their bodies. Leaves unconditioned and even some very experienced sensitives stunned in their light.... Psychokinetic interaction with objects and spacecraft....autonomous interaction. Very intimidating to look at.
This is so funny to me -- you aren't the first one to call it out here, and my podcast co-host also razzed me about it. I'm starting to think it's really a regional dialect pronunciation thing. I recognize that the spelling doesn't really warrant the pronunciation, but that's what I grew up hearing and learning where I live!
But, did you know these beings lived for thousands of years in their bodies? Or that Mars was their home planet and base of operations, they got bombarded in a nuclear surprise attack by rival races, as a result these Aryans resorted to cloning in an effort to stave off their genetic degradation, it was mostly unsuccessful, hence why they created humanity. Unfortunately for them the other rival races returned to drive them out of our Solar System, then proceeded to tamper with our DNA so these beings cannot incarnate here again.
Past tense,... Was, one of Earths important allies,... Sadly. I remember becoming really emotional and upset to the passing of the Asgard and the fact we'd never see Thor ever again.
Could you do a video about the Tollan? I had read years ago they had been taken offworld during the height of the Roman empire. Maybe you could expand on this.
We might have gotten an in-universe explanation for this had SGA gone another year. Since the Asgard and the Ancients were allies, it stands to reason that they got the environmental suits from the Ancients before traveling to Pegasus. (The production reason seems to have something to due with the fact that the suits made for SGA Season 5 were hella expensive, so they were repurposed for SGU!)
I would love to see more of the Vineer. Btw did they ever show what the furlings looked like? it would be funny if they look like Chewbacca. The Nakai was another interesting race of beings too.
WiseSilverWolf I couldn't remember who the Nakai were, so I image searched for them. It gives a lot of porno results! It seems it is also a Japanese word. I did find it looking for the mythology of Stargate. The perils of the internet! 8)
I never knew why the Asgard couldn't use replicators bodies to transfer their mind. we know Atlantis had successfully created a repciator body to transfer Elizabeth Weir's consciousness from subspace to a replicator body. So looks like they were killed off because it was too expensive to create them.
A single Replicator alone wouldn't be able to contain an Asgard consciousness. Asgard consciousness is bigger than Tau'ri, I'm guessing that to contain all that information they would have to share the data with many other Replicators. Yes they will have many Replicators because they are many Asgard, but their will be a need for non-Asgard Replicators to contain all of their minds. By sharing them all like that, they could be easily become mixed-up and corrupted (lost or broken).
Always annoyed me that the Asgard were not introduced to the Tolan. Im sure that would have been an insanely fruitful relationship leading to the Asgard either fixing their cloning problem or something similar to a hybrid between the two.
just wondering when jack meet the asgard to in order to get rid of the information in his head didnt he travel to another galaxy other than milky and pegaus in order to do so.thats when we learnt of the 8th symbol?also it came up when in the alternate reality when the goa'uld took over stargate command
I've never believed the Agsard killed themselves. It would have been so easy to run another bluff, with a multi-verse escape route with a false explosion to cover their tracks.
SG1 was amazing but the whole fate of the Universe changing in 10 years was implausible. Let's see - Stargate program begins, Asgard experiments on humans discovered, Asgard become friends and then their civilization goes extinct and humans get all their Wikipedia, Goa'uld are defeated, Jaffa are free, Ori are discovered and defeated in another galaxy, Daniel Jackson ascends twice and becomes human twice, Ancients outpost on Antarctica is powered up via a ZPM from another planet and Anubis is wiped out with it, Multiple Stargates are on Earth; one of which is destroyed, Apophis is killed, System Lords are defeated, Ba'al is killed after time travels, Adria is wiped and Origin is completely decimated, Ancient language is understood along with Goa'uld, several hyperdrive ships capable of travelling across galaxies in like 2 weeks are created, transporter beaming tech is copied etc.! Wowza.
The whole "copy of a copy" problem with the Asgard always annoyed me. Why make copies of copies when you could digitize the DNA and keep it as data that won't degrade, and create new bodies from the same data every time?
"The last of the four great races was gone." Uhh, what? Until this point, really only the Ancients have been confirmed to be gone, if you can really consider them "gone". I would say more that they just have left the alliance. The Nox are proven to very much still be around, and be all appearances seem to be doing just fine. And the Furlings, we really don't know. They very well could still be out there. The galaxy is a very, very, unfathomably huge place. And the Universe is even bigger.
I think you oversimplified their inheritance. They gave everything had had and knew. Thats 10.000 years of recorded history, the consience of every asgard on record, a part of the ancient database wich they have been studying for as long as they can remember. They had the knowledge now to reseed the asgard as a whole if they wanted to!
I Believe that blowing up their Planet was a Smokescreen....And they fled to a Very Distant Planet to Fix all their cloning Problems, remember what happened to the Planet in the 1st Atlantis episode?
3:55 "the last of the four great races was gone", Well, untrue. The Nox was still around, and because of a lack or knowledge of, likely too the furlings, so in truth, at least one half of the once four great races is still very much existing and thriving.
That is a mistake, and you are half right. The Nox are isolationists who can cloak themselves and render themselves invisible to sensors as well who have buried their stargate. All the Furling settlements we see in Stargate SG1 are either abandoned or the people were wiped out by the Goa'uld.
If can successfully communicate with a life form to explain what their actions mean in their environment of abode you can get them to cooperate accordingly.
I never have heard ancient pronounced like that. I don't believe it is a regional thing, but tell me you other people, other than the narrator himself, is that a regional thing or not?
The Asgard seem to be an interesting species with GREAT ships. It's unfortunate that the writers of Stargate were unwilling or unable to give these beings an original name.
Wait... not all the Asgard died. Only the Asgard of the Milky Way are perhaps gone. The Asgard of the planet Othalla in the Ida Galaxy should still be alive. Along with lots of their folks in Ida galaxy other planets. Asgard are potentially in other galaxies as well.
There weren't any Asgard of the Milky Way, they were Asgard of the Ida galaxy that had travelled to the Milky Way. Asgard hyperdrives could travel from the Ida galaxy to the Milky Way in a couple of days.
I miss the asgard. Then again I really didn't agree with the direction of the last 2 season's. Felt like OP enemies, no reason as to why they kept them on the back foot other than they just are.
If they wanted to live for ever they should have made empty replicators body and transfer there minds 🤷♂️ or make a super asgard that would not die easy.

Yeah, their pursuit of cloning prevents them from evolving into ascended beings and their science first culture hindered their spiritual progress.

@@thecoolnerdplaysvr5674 I guess it could be argued that since they transfer their essence from body to body regularly they should be super easy to ascend lol.
My favourite species in the series.
Great overview, thanks.
Ancients - Ori
Tok'ra - Goa'uld
Asgard - Venir
Am I detecting a theme here? 😁
A dark mirror self?
Tauri - Trump
What I love is how this show was becoming Star Trek on steroids. Instead of humans being at the bottom of the technological food chain. Humans were gifted the best technology by the Asgard. The slaves are now a superpower. The irony of it all.
I miss so much the SG series!
Though since the minds are in the asguard core, if the Pegasus Asguard figure out the cloning issue, they may be able to be brought back.
Ank-chent...
... you're killing me!!
I was looking for this kind of comment. Eventhough English isn't my native language, that sounded weird to me too
3:54 "The last of the 4 great races was gone", but the nox is still around.
The furlings maybe also around, maybe they are in other galaxy
earth still has that time machine puddle jumper.
we should go back in time and help the Asgard with this new found knowledge of the vaneir
That and go back to the point we're their genetic status is reverse able
The real "Greys" scared me as a kid so did the Asgard but now I want to meet them in 2029
But, did you know these beings lived for thousands of years in their bodies? Or that Mars was their home planet and base of operations, they got bombarded in a nuclear surprise attack by rival races, as a result these Aryans resorted to cloning in an effort to stave off their genetic degradation, it was mostly unsuccessful, hence why they created humanity. Unfortunately for them the other rival races returned to drive them out of our Solar System, then proceeded to tamper with our DNA so these beings cannot incarnate here again.
Rockrider 520S you are false
Amazing content. Keep it up.
All we want is Stargate Atlantis and universe back bring it back
It kinda made me sad when the original asgard group died 😔
Aschen medical technology could almost certainly help the Asgard
No thank you.
Those boring people that only want to take worlds for their own goal will killed them and killed humens slow death
"No new Asgard have been born for generations."
...
LOL. I guess "generations" here was just my subconscious shortcut for "spans of time."
Past tense,... Was, one of Earths important allies,... Sadly.
I remember becoming really emotional and upset to the passing of the Asgard and the fact we'd never see Thor ever again.
Super video
Could you do a video about the Tollan? I had read years ago they had been taken offworld during the height of the Roman empire. Maybe you could expand on this.
Great recommendation. I'll make sure they're on the list.
Thanks. Who is the narrator?
That's Darren, GateWorld's owner and managing editor! (You can also hear him on the GateWorld Podcast.)
Wow, i just realised how similar the asgard armored suits from the Pegasus are to the hazard suits on the Destiny. Anybody else?
We might have gotten an in-universe explanation for this had SGA gone another year. Since the Asgard and the Ancients were allies, it stands to reason that they got the environmental suits from the Ancients before traveling to Pegasus. (The production reason seems to have something to due with the fact that the suits made for SGA Season 5 were hella expensive, so they were repurposed for SGU!)
My favorite characters in stargate are: Thor, Dr. Daniel jackson, Teal'c and Major John Shepherd.
Did you know that Michael Shanks voiced Supreme Commander Thor?
I would love to see more of the Vineer. Btw did they ever show what the furlings looked like? it would be funny if they look like Chewbacca. The Nakai was another interesting race of beings too.
WiseSilverWolf
I couldn't remember who the Nakai were, so I image searched for them. It gives a lot of porno results! It seems it is also a Japanese word. I did find it looking for the mythology of Stargate. The perils of the internet! 8)
You said the we're the last of the four races....however, the Nox are still arrround as far as we know
The interesting thing is that the Vanir use the same suit props as those of Destiny years later.
dont worry there still are Asgard in the Pegasus galaxy
Do one on hyperspace and hyperdrive.
Would love to know why the Asgard Core could be tracked by the Ori ships but not before it was installed on an Earth ship ...
may i ask why the Asgurd never used replicator body's? that would have saved them and even give them a platform to continue to evolve and improve.
just wondering when jack meet the asgard to in order to get rid of the information in his head didnt he travel to another galaxy other than milky and pegaus in order to do so.thats when we learnt of the 8th symbol?also it came up when in the alternate reality when the goa'uld took over stargate command
RIP Thor. He liked the yellow ones
…the Nox and the Furlings are still around. Yeah, they only got one episode each, but they’re not gone.
I've never believed the Agsard killed themselves. It would have been so easy to run another bluff, with a multi-verse escape route with a false explosion to cover their tracks.
Can you do a video like this for the Nox?
Yes! It's on the list. We're about to step up production on these Omnipedia videos, which will start to appear on Wednesdays.
I was the 300th like.
Lifeforms comes in all shAPEs and sizes.
true
I don't know much about Stargate - are they actually connected to the norse gods in-universe?
Yep! When SG-1 first encountered Thor he was using a hologram to pose as a 7-foot Asgardian warrior.
@@GateWorldDotNet So were all the Nose Gods actually Asgards posing as humans?
Just thinking about those guys with their cute gray butts, it makes me tear up a bit. Great guys, those Asgard!
Wowza.
Remember when sg1 saved an entire asgard planet and the asgard wouldn't even give earth the tech to protect themselves against the gou'ld?
💗
I wish atlantis could have continued and fought the vanir
Why do extraterrestrial beings never wear clothing, Don't need clothing protection from varying temperatures and storms?
I always wanted to know which alien race was the bad alien from the original movie???? I can never find out
In the TV canon, he was just a Goa'uld. They ignore the image of Ra as a Roswell grey-looking alien.
If Asgard’s could go to the Milky Way galaxy couldn’t they go to another galaxy
What’s the name of the intro music from 0:00 - 0:25?
This track is called "Light Years Away" by Doug Maxwell.
@@GateWorldDotNet Thank you, this was very helpful!
Off the Books Experiments, Unsanctioned Experiments on Humans. What, you have sanctioned ones?
They did the Asgard wrong. Very wrong
Yup, they got shafted hard
The series never showed what happened to those Asgardians. SG-1 could've helped those Asgardians find a new home.
Would be incredible if this was reality, not just fiction
I am a few years late, lol. But i prefer the Asgard in the Pegasus Galaxy. They are what the asgard could have become.
We aint dumb enuf - asgard
I think you oversimplified their inheritance.
They gave everything had had and knew.
Thats 10.000 years of recorded history, the consience of every asgard on record, a part of the ancient database wich they have been studying for as long as they can remember.
They had the knowledge now to reseed the asgard as a whole if they wanted to!
I Believe that blowing up their Planet was a Smokescreen....And they fled to a Very Distant Planet to Fix all their cloning Problems, remember what happened to the Planet in the 1st Atlantis episode?
was there ever such a thing as the "red as asguardian hive"? pixypixpax
Mate they are the roswell greys
Felt like OP enemies, no reason as to why they kept them on the back foot other than they just are.
in my head cannon Asgard never died fuck that choice
did they collectively ascend when their homeworld blew??
Jeffrey Binns no they mentioned they weren't capable of ascension due to the repeated cloning
well that certainly sucks, I guess I would have considered giving everyone a MASSIVE dose of shrooms or something before the big bang :-)
Why would the Asgard a god like race allied with lesser races?
So upsetting how the writers ended the asgard race. They could have still ended the show without killing them off. Such a stupid decision they made.
This just reminded me how much I hated Unending.
First we know nothing about the Furlyings and the Nox are still alive
The Blackcelt you know this is fiction right ?
Killing off the asgard was dumb as fuck
If they wanted to live for ever they should have made empty replicators body and transfer there minds 🤷♂️ or make a super asgard that would not die easy.
the way you say "ancient" is making me incredibly uncomfortable. it's /einshient/, not /enkshient/
Regional dialect.
