There was a small detail in this that was slightly incorrect. The others tried to prevent him from being fully ascended, but then they used it to their advantage to punish Oma to teach her a lesson about assending those on the lower plane. It wasn't that they couldn't descend him, it was meant as a lesson for her to learn never to ascend the lower planes again. And of course, she still helps the lower planes to ascend.
The entirety of the others had plenty of power to descend him, but they left him half ascended to teach Oma a lesson and so she will basically babysit him the entire time. The others are complete morons, if she didn't get in this eternity battle with Anubis, once the Ori came into existence in the Milky Way, I'm sure he would have joined them. But this whole plot line of fight him until the end of time for all eternity kind of thing was really dumb writing. They should have just descended him and erased all of his memories and let him live out the rest of his life as the snake he is.

Anubis was seriously a major shake up in what we know about the system lords. Even outside of just him being partially ascended, his tactics were dangerously effective.
Ya he didn't fuck around with too much pomp and circumstance. Well not a LOT for Goa'uld. 😅 But I do miss O'Neill's phone conversations with him and the other system Lords over hologram through the Stargate those were the best. That and working on your tee time at the gate.
@@randystegemann9990 I'm thinking that he was extra sadistic or something, and would have made sokar look benign by comparison (coincidentally played by the same actor). Perhaps his galactic scale omnicide plan was already in progress back then.
The thing that always kinda was cool to me was Anubis and the Kull armor was never really defeated. Anubis was locked in eternal combat while the Kull disrupter weapons bypassed the armor to "de-alive" the Kull warrior itself. Still shocked we didn't see more usage of the armor and weapons later on, the Kull wrist blaster mounted in a more standard gun chassis and the armor adapted for Tau'ri use would have been cool to see.
Oh I absolutely agree. That armor was better than anything they had come against. However I believe in the show they sent one of the suits to Area 51 for study.
I agree. I remember in one of the behind the scenes footage where Michael is reading fan letters or something there is a question about Anubis being dead and his repply is: Is he really dead? Now the Kull warrior armor. As much as it would've made sense to quickly reverse engineer the material and equip every SG team with it. It would've made our heroes way too overpowered and we would not feel as if they are in danger in a firefight or something.
Anubis was a brilliant antagonist. He actually instilled dread in me during his run on the show. He got other Goa'uld to serve him (both powerful and weak). He humbled the Asgard. He achieved ascension when no other Goa'uld could have. Honestly, without Oma, the galaxy would have been completely screwed. The Ori could have handled him, if they knew of him; but they likely wouldn't have become aware of our galaxy if Anubis would have had his way.
It would have been very interesting to see what the Ori would have thought of him - on one side, he was an enemy of the ancients, and on the other hand he hadn't ascended on his own. Also I doubt that he would have joined them.
@@H4hT53 and they wouldn't have shared power with him. So it might have been a case of attempting to use each other before betraying each other...or they would have been instant enemies (with the Ori having the advantage in the beginning)
If Anubis resets the Galaxy based on himself he probably would end up in a situation similar to the Ori. Give him enough time and he'd have worshippers and armies of acended clones. He'd be a formidable enemy even for the Ori. That said without Oma, Anubis would never have ascended
I have we visited his story knowing what the future is in the show, I often wonder of an alternate reality where Anubis joins forces with the Ori and shares the deepest secrets of the others and how to defeat them.
While I don't think it was what they intended, I always loved that Ra named his followers after other G'ould, like he named his pets after all the subordinates he didn't like in order to mock them.
With the others they had majority rule. And when you have majority rule you often have to think as a collective. So they all agreed on the same Concepts when it came to using their power, in some ways it seems Noble but in other ways it seems very selfish. And I believe that Oma was trying to build an opposition of ascended beings on her side to perhaps tip the scales into her favor. Which in the beginning, wasn't against the rules, however the others were paying attention to what she was doing and they started to understand that people that she would ascended we're often on her side, and if enough of them ascended they would out number the others. So they created another set of rules to never Ascend any of the lower planes as they could do it on their own. However the others liked to stay in power, so I believe, it became within the others best interest to entrap her somehow. If you remember in the show that they explain that Anubis tricked her, how would such a thing be possible? Especially to someone who was an ascended being? I personally believe the others planned to use Anubis to entrap Oma while she broke their new set of rules for her to follow, so when they caught her in the act, it was used to keep her from doing it again as they said they couldn't descend him completely, which begs the question why they couldn't descent him? In this video if you pay attention, they mentioned that he was too powerful to descend, but how did he become too powerful? Especially in comparison to them? In the series you become powerful when you have someone who worships you, but Anubis wasn't allowed to have anyone worship Him as an ascended being as this would break the others rules, and they would been forced to take action. I don't believe that the others told the full truth about why they couldn't descend him, I believe they lied and kept him partially ascended so that Oma could be punished to watch over him, part of the rules were, that he couldn't use any of his ascended abilities when it came down to how he ruled the lower planes, there was also a proof of this when Daniel tried to use his powers against Anubis, when his first prime thought he was a true God by what he just witnessed, then Anubis explained what you saw was not of my doing. Which means Anubis knew the rules so well that he wasn't willing to pretend that what just took place was of his own powers because he knew how powerful the others were and that they would take him out if he tried to make that claim. The only reason why the others didn't interfere with Anubis and his plans was because the rules allowed him a loophole to do what he would have done if he were a regular Goa,uld. Anubis wouldn't have been powerful enough to fight Oma without the help of the others in some way. So when the plot became about eternal Kombat was Anubis, that should raise some questions to how he became so powerful. In the show it's explained that you can't kill an ascended being, but you can descend them and erase their memories. And I believe they could have done this with Anubis but they kept him as a half ass ended to punish Oma into submission to prevent her from growing her side. And if you remember the story of the Ori, and how they extract power from their followers to become more powerful, you can understand this concept that Oma wasn't breaking their rules, until they added another rule to not help Ascend the lower planes.
@@mrbojangles8133 I agree I seriously doubt the ancients are the only ascended. It seems to be a different existence and not a physical plane you travel too. I have the gut feeling that it isn't as eternal and enlightened as they thought it would be either.
It wasn't that the other Ascended Beings failed to send Anubis back to mortal form. It was that they made the choice not to do it and leave him in the halfway form. It was meant as a punishment for Oma breaking all the rules they set over and over.
I would love for a prequel that follows Anubis before he ascended. And it could work with any actor because we’ve never seen or heard the original Anubis. I’m positive the Diner Anubis isn’t his actual appearance, but one he chose to more easily mess with Daniel. Edit: Or bring back the guy who played Sokar for the role because he did the voice for Anubis on the show. It wouldn’t be the first time SG used the same actor for different roles.
Given that the forcefield suit has David's voice, the OG host would unsurprisingly be David Palffy is the host itself also made it to ascension with Anubis in full control.
Anubis literally stands for Pluto, Loki, Hades etc. as "The Lord of the Underworld" because it's invisible to us on Earth for the naked eye and often it's literally "beneath" our world, hence Under The World. Just other names for the same energies. Everything in SG resembled planets, stars or other Universal phenomena in our "3D reality". This was just one reason I always loved SG SG-1 :-)
At 2:20 you say "The Ancients used their collective power to try and force Anubis descend, (...) but because he was now equal to them in power, their efforts were only partially effective." This is not what happened. The Ancients chose to do it this way to punish Oma Desala.
@@TheBooban I do not understand your question or what it has to do with the topic. The Ancients could stop Anubis if they wanted to, he was not too powerful for them to handle. But they chose to let him be half ascended and not interfere. The Ancients did nothing like that with the Ori. The Ori were to powerful.
The dialogue in "Threads" isn't quite that precise. Daniel asks Oma why the others didn't send Anubis back all the way, and she responds, "It's complicated." Then we learn that the others warned Anubis he couldn't use any knowledge or power he would not otherwise have been able to obtain as a Goa'uld. Then, Daniel susses out that they still allow him to wreak havoc anyway as a way of punishing Oma. To me, that doesn't say that they could have made him entirely mortal again but opted not to. The punishment to Oma is that she has to watch Anubis as an existential threat to the galaxy.
@@GateWorldDotNet Maybe. I disagree with the conclusion, I believe it's clear that that is the case. But either way, to say that the Ancients used their collective power to try and force Anubis descend, but because he was now equal to them in power, their efforts were only partially effective is merely speculative on your part.
The means that Carter used to do a hyper jump past the shields of Anubis's ship could have been used by missiles to destroy the Ori ships by hyper jumping inside the shields and detonating a naqadah enhanced nuke (or several).
Yeah, I wanted to know further information in that story which made me excited about Stargate Alliance the video game oh, unfortunately the game never came out and we never got to see the extended version of that story, because that game was surrounded by Anubis and his rise to power. But we never got to see that alternate ending.
Anubis is still out there so if there ever is a new series of Stargate he could always return. Even worse is that he could meet Adria and they form a partnership, they would be unstoppable.
I always wondered what he and Sokar did to get them banished. I mean Baal killed 60 million people in an instant and it was remembered as an act of cunning, not brutality. So what Anaubis and Sokar did must've been something special and not some big massacre. Therefore I always imagined that they did something that clearly went against the interest of the Goauld empire or the race itself. Sokar could've joined some enemy race just because they were attacked by some Goauld he hated. E.g. Apophis attacked some race in order to conquer it but Sokar hated Apophis so he joined that race. And if that race developed e.g. anti-Goauld venom like later the Tokra did, it would've clearly angered other Goauld and got Sokar banished. As for Anubis, given his absolute god complex he could've e.g. made experiments on Goauld themselves. Perhaps something on how to control them like his slaves. This would surely anger all other Goauld and get him a banishment.
And both performed by the excellent David Palffy! I sure wish we'd gotten more of Sokar on screen. I feel like the show really turned a corner with developing villains there (including production design, costumes, and makeup) ... and then they blew him up. ;)
I thought Anubis was partially ascended to punish Oma Desala. Also Anubis was forbidden to to use ascended knowledge Anubis would not be able to get as a GoaUld
Oma helped Anubis to ascend because he tricked her into thinking he was a good person. The other ancients forced him back down the ascension ladder to something between mortal and ascended. They could have fully devolved him but chose not to, to punish Oma for her hubris in breaking the first law of the ascended ancients: no lone ascended being shall help a lower to ascend. In spite of this punishment Oma continued to help mortals to ascend, like Daniel Jackson. It wasn't until Anubis was literally about to wipe out all life in the galaxy that she chose to act.
The dialogue in "Threads" isn't quite that precise. Daniel asks Oma why the others didn't send Anubis back all the way, and she responds, "It's complicated." @@vadfarkas14 I agree, although he may not have been the evil incarnate that anubis was, but he had cunning that other enemies didnt and could easily scheme his way out of a jam
The dialogue in "Threads" is a little vague. Her punishment seems to have been to watch him run roughshod over the galaxy ... while the others did nothing to intervene.
I was never certain whether the gua'uld took on the identities of the Egyptian and other BC pre-12th century pantheons or if those various pantheons were based up on the gua'uld who already held those names and traits. It seems like there were a lot gua'uld doing the same thing and those guys didn't do a whole lot of playing well in group. In t also seemed that jumping on that bandwagon was so popular that even the Asgard were doing it, which sort of makes me think that the old pantheons were based on the aliens.
However it was meant to be, I prefer the idea that our old legends are remnants of the stories of the Ancients/Asgaurd/Goa'uld ect. I mean clearly this is the direction they were going with Atlantis. The story of the lost city told by Plato, not the story told by Plato that the ancients co-opted for their city name.
When Ra found the Tau'ri, Egyptian culture didn't exist yet. The Movie dates his arrival in North Africa at 80,000 BC. Since his Ha'tak was a pyramid and he told Daniel: "I created your civilization", the Goa'uld certainly started all that we know about most ancient cultures. After the rebellion, their exploits became mythology until the Stargate was found of course.
@@RoosterMontgomery I had no idea the movie had their arivial at 80,000 BC. That's pre-Ice Age. The implications of that blow my mind. Also let's hear it for the Goa'uld sarcophagi tech for keeping him going for that long.

Anubis and Daniel are prime examples of how useless ascending is. Unless you plan to meditate on all the knowledge of the universe, you're just a cosmic voyeur. The Q certainly have the better deal!
As a System Lord Anubis had worshipers. As an ascended being those worshipers would empower him to a higher level just like the Ori. Something forbidden by the ascended Ancients. This could be what prevented the Ancients from descending him. Oma might have been able to kill him by sacrificing herself to disrupt his energy pattern in the same way as the anti Ori weapon cancelled out the Ori in their galaxy.
I just want to say that if you allow a half-ascended being to wreak havoc and kill innocent people and races just so you can punish the one of your own that helped them ascend, any idea of the ancients being "enlightened" is pretty much off the table. And since it was clearly _possible_ for Anubis to ascend, we can say conclusively that enlightenment and purity of heart isn't _necessary_ for ascension, at best it's a recommendation, enforced primarily by mob justice. So basically, anyone can ascend, provided know how, independent their nature, or any moral or ethical leanings.
I never understood how he went from posessing bodies and ordering Baal around to being in that weird diner place, did he just tell Baal "hey im gonna go somewhere handle the fleet for me" and he just never returned?
I wonder where the "eternal battle" explanation comes from. Everybody uses it but when I saw the episode I understood it differently. He was forbiden from directly using his powers and she was forbiden from stoping him, meaning her attacking and him defending resulted in the other Ancients destroying them both for breaking the rules.
The eternal battle explanation comes from the scene itself. We see the others looking up from their dinner tables but only watching as the scene unfolds. They did not act. Oma knew she could not win but Anubis had no other choice but to fight. I'd like to believe the reason they did not interfere is because this way Oma will never ever help anyone ascend so no more rule breaking, while her punishment of "watching anubis for all eternity" is still in place from a certain point of view considering she is fighting him for all eternity.
@@vadfarkas14 Sure but considering the whole scene in the diner is highly symbolical, it's not like ascended beings are hanging out in Daniel's memory, it's debatable we are seeing what is actually happening. Just because they are all not shooting beams of lighting out of their hands doesn't mean they are not involved. When all of them use their power at once simple look might be enough.
Around 2:30 it says the other ascended lacked the power to banish anubis back to a normal body. That's not true. They could have, and even did with Daniel. Anubis was 1/2 ascended because the Ancients did that as punishment to Omah, this is explicitly said in the show.
*Implicitly said. I rechecked the relevant transcripts, including "Threads," and it is stated that Oma's punishment was to have to watch Anubis run amok. It's not stated explicitly (in contravention of dialogue earlier in the series) that they were able to de-ascend Anubis against his will but chose not to.
In hindsight,… And after seeing how the rest of the franchise episodes played out,… Anubis was an idiot. He had access to so many things. And did so little.

Now I can't stop thinking about how funny it would be if Anubis managed to escape from Oma and fleed to the Ori galaxy...right when the Sangraal was activated.
Wasn’t it explained that Anubis was partially descended to punish Oma? He was forbidden to use knowledge he got while being ascended or be literally deleted from the universe. He could only use knowledge he could’ve gotten as a flesh and blood creature.
Why did you use the Kheb storyline visuals to enhance your take on Anubis? The Kheb story was about Shifu, Apophis' child with Share'/Amunet. If you're going to "inform" fans and curious onlookers, please do it using as much accuracy as you can muster.
Simply because Anibis has a lengthy backstory that was not shown on screen. I didn't want to drop into 3 minutes of slowly panning across pictures of Anubis' cloak. And we've had an entire episode set on Kheb, so it seemed perfectly appropriate to the material.
You got one thing incorrect. The ascended ancient purposely kept Anubis inbetween ascended and mortal planes. He could operate freely but with restrictions. This was done to teach Desala a lesson about interfering in the natural path of beings. In the end, she finally accepted her penance.
I've gone back and reviewed the dialogue from "Threads," and I think this is conjecture. The characters had long speculated that the Others were unable to force Anubis to fully retake mortal form (e.g., "Fallen"), and the revelation here in "Threads" is that Oma's punishment was to watch Anubis wreak havoc. It's not stated that they only sent him back halfway on purpose as part of this punishment. I think that isn't the case, since Oma also states that the Others warned Anubis "he wasn't allowed to use any knowledge or power unless he otherwise would have gained it as a Goa'uld." But I admit the dialogue here about the Others' actions is a bit ambiguous,
Honestly Oma Desala should have been granted a next level of ascension for her eternal sacrifice to stop another (half-)ascended being. She didn't deserve her punishment because she didn't intentionally help a villain but they tricked her.
I've never been clear on how Anubis ascended. Did Oma de Sala not know that he was a Goa'uld? Or was she so stupid that she actually believed one could be "pure of heart"?
She likely knew full well that he was a Goa'uld, but was hardcore manipulated. He knew how to talk the talk. He had evidently found some Ancient writing on ascension and studied it carefully. She told Daniel that when he came to Kheb "he knew what he was doing."
Pretty sure it wasn’t because the ancients couldn’t send him all the way back, but they did it so oma would learn why its dangerous to fuck with accenting lower beings, if they didn’t have a sword over Anubis’s head, he wouldn’t follow their rules of only using whatever power he normally could have as a regular goa'uld
That was something I never understood and never made sense how was it that the collective power of the ascended ancients was only able to send Anubis back part way but Oma was able to send Daniel back all the way all by herself
I think the difference here is that Daniel got fed up with the Ancients and returned to mortal form voluntarily. Anubis would have fought it, and had enough power as an ascended being to partially hold on to that incorporeal state.
The show can be vague at times over where the Goa'uld took up existing mythological figures and impersonated them, versus how much of that mythology grew up around them and their actions. It seems to be a both/and situation.
wait... what?... its not the ancients couldn't sent anubis back, they had the power to send back ascended beings and make them mortal (Daniel Jackson for example), but they wanted to punish Oma, so they only send him half way, and strip them of the knowledge he gained from being ascended, and let him keep any knowledge that he as a mortal, and as a goauld could have obtained, wich gave him a hube advantage, that was the punishment to Oma for helping him and other ascend.
It can't be accurate to say that he took his name from the ancient Egyptian god's name, can it? From the methodology of the universe of Stargate, the names of the gods came from the occupation of Ra and the knowledge from that time, so the logic of naming would have to be reversed so that Anubis came first and was being honored by them naming the god after him, right?
I would buy that many Goa'uld were around early enough influencing Earth cultures that the mythology of the gods originated with them, rather than vice versa. But when the show touches on this directly it's usually to suggest that the Goa'uld found existing religious beliefs and merely appropriated the personae of the gods already being worshiped. One example is this line from Daniel in "Children of the Gods": "[Ra] borrowed the religion and culture of the ancient Egyptians he brought through the gate and then he used it to enslave them."
The historical connections between ancient dieties and the Goa'uld's presence on Earth thousands of years ago isn't really explored all that thoroughly in the show. I think early on the suggestion is made that the Goa'uld posed as existing gods from the civilizations they conquered. But the fact that Ra found Earth 10,000 years ago, when humans were still tribal (and AFAIK the Egyptian pantheon didn't exist yet), could lend support to the theory that the inspiration does indeed go the other way.
So I thought they said that they COULDN'T descend Anubis but I can't find that. I did, however, realize that I am still kind of right. Remember, he's only half ascended. There's no reason for a fully ascended being to not be able to force a lower back into flesh and blood. The fact that Oma and Anubis are locked forever in a battle is proof of how powerful he is. He already had knowledge prior to being ascended and that's how he's able to hold his own against Oma the first time and then the collection of the Ancients AND at the end holding off Oma from beating him.
So Daniel must not have been fully ascended if Oma could send him all the way back? I thought she had to do it by herself, with no help from the other ascended beings, since she helped him ascend. She said she helped Anubis ascend, was that an all the way ascension that all of the ascended beings could not completely reverse? So with Daniel it was reversible until he proved he was worthy to the others? And what exactly did Anubis do that was so "unspeakable?"
I suspect Daniel could be fully descended because he did not fight it, but accepted the judgment of the Others -- with whom he had by then become quite jaded. Anubis would have fought descension with a "You're welcome to TRY" attitude.
And while I think it's implied that the Ascended beings are stronger in a group, at least when Oma finally decided to fight Anubis everyone was pretty much in agreement that we wouldn't see either of them again for a very long time, possibly never again. So maybe that's what happens when you try and fight it: it's just a never-ending stalemate between two Ascended, taking them both out of commission for everything else in the meantime, until one of them gives up. Maybe if a larger group decided to join in and help Oma, they could force Anubis back - or maybe their powers don't "stack" like that and it wouldn't have made a difference. But either way, they saw that as Oma's fight, as part of her punishment.
He didn't take his name from the Ancient Egyptian God Anubis, the Ancient Egyptian God was Anubis. As is covered in the show, the Goa'uld conquered earth using the pretense of being God's thousands of years ago. As such, ancient Egyptian mythology is written about them, with their technology viewed as godly powers.
This is somewhat fuzzy in the show's canon, mostly because the closest we ever get to the subject is when Daniel speculates. Did the Goa'uld find ancient belief systems and impersonate existing deities? or did the mythologies of the ancient deities emerge from the Goa'uld and their actions? It seems to have been a bit of both, and so the history and the mythology bleed into each other. On the one hand you have Daniel explicitly stating in early seasons that the Goa'uld took on the roles of deities they found in ancient cultures. But then you have things like the lore of Seth banishing Osiris, where it appears that the myth came from something that the Goa'uld actually did while living on Earth.
I think the Ascended Ancients didn't push Anubis the whole way down cause 1. They probably can't cause there is no body for it to go back too and. 2. I think the Ascended Ancients were probably bored and wanted to see what Anubis would do.
It had more to do with punishing Oma. Also having a body or not having a body isn't an issue when it comes to be sending someone. I believe if they did it the whole way there would be two separate entities one human oh, and the other a snake oh, and they wouldn't be together on the same planet all of their memories would be erased.
What were Anubis' crimes that were "unspeakable" even for his brethren? Destroying planets and eating babies is as bad as it gets in my book. They feared him when he came back from the ascended beyond with forbidden knowledge, but prior to that he didn't seem as big a threat as say Ra or Apophis.
Oma ascended Daniel Jackson as well as Anubis, yet Jackson was sent back as a human, while Anubis was half ascended? I didn't get the impression that Anubis was more powerful than Jackson when he was initially ascended. I got the impression that the Ancients only sent him back half-way as a form of punishment towards Oma for her presumption to ascend beings by herself.
Daniel descended voluntarily, while Anubis seems to have fought the process. The dialog in "Threads" is a little ambiguous as to whether Oma was forced to watch him run amok as punishment *because* the Ancients couldn't make him descend all the way (which had been implied in Season 7), or whether the Ancients chose leave Anubis partly ascended specifically in order to punish Oma.
@@GateWorldDotNet Not sure about that. Oma stepped in and stopped Daniel from interfering with Anubis, which imo means he was kicked out of the ‘Ascended plane’ right after. He didn’t recognize ‘Jim’ as Anubis as those memories were also taken away from him.
Anubis evidently created Khalek as part of his research into ascension -- perhaps even before he went to Kheb. IIRC he might have even considered Khalek as a new host, a la Nirrti's experiments in creating a hok'taur.
Daniel likely didn't use his ascended powers to try and fight back. It eventually becomes clear that after "Full Circle" he was fed up with the Ancients and didn't want any part of their hands-off approach any more.
Actually...Anubis didn't take inspiration from the Egyptian deity. It was the other way around, he was the inspiration for the Egyptian deity. Sure some minor Goa'uld from time to time impersonated existing deities, but most of the major ones (System Lords) were the original inspiration for their respective deities.
I agree with you, it would seem that this UA-cam channel forgot some of the facts of the show. It's like this in the Stargate Wiki as well that I have noticed.
@@5226-p1e Yeah, the real answer is kind of a mix. Some major Goa'uld were the inspiration for deities. Later on, more minor ones trying to gain power for themselves sometimes co-opted religions and impersonated an existing deity. There's no single answer for every one of them. The Asgard were the original inspiration for Norse mythology. And the Ancients were responsible for a bunch of different things since they were around so long.
The Omnipedia attempts to stay carefully within on-screen canon, and when it comes to the Goa'uld and their personae the show isn't as clear-cut as you suggest. I would certainly believe that many Goa'uld were around Earth early enough that the mythology of the gods originated with them, rather than vice versa. But when the show touches on this directly it's usually to suggest that the Goa'uld found existing religious beliefs and merely appropriated the personae of the gods already being worshiped. One example is this line from Daniel in "Children of the Gods": "[Ra] borrowed the religion and culture of the ancient Egyptians he brought through the gate and then he used it to enslave them." That's not necessarily definitive either. But it suggests that not every Earth deity originated from a Goa'uld.
@@GateWorldDotNet I believe we can chalk what Daniel said at the beginning, as he didn't fully understand the full picture and what was going on at the time when the Gould were here. It kind of reminds me of a side point that I have, we all call the Alteran the Ancients still, despite this being their true name after all the seasons that we have seen in the show. However I can distinctively say, they should be referred to as the Alterans because that name didn't necessarily change throughout time, only the perception of their name because early on in the show we didn't necessarily have a name for them as it was established later down the road. However knowing all of this, some people still refer to them as the ancients when we know their true name that hasn't at all changed. However if you are trying to distinguish a Time period Based off of their name, I can see that being used to explain who they were at the time period that we're talking about. As the example is in their original Galaxy they were known as the Alteran, and when they came to the Milky Way and left to the Pegasus Galaxy they were known as atlanteans, or lantian. But if you ask say the Nox or the Asgard they referred to them as the ancients and not atlanteans or lantian or even their true name because that name didn't exist up until the later seasons. Or perhaps the 4 great races never really knew their true name and just referred to them as the ancients.
I don’t really like the Oma/Anubis, Morrgan/Adria fighting for all time thing, it doesn’t have the same ring as a full defeat, and the Adria/morrgan one felt like a cheap copy
So technically can we still call him gould? He has no snake…. What happened to his host when he ascended? Was it just the snake that ascended? Or where they mixed lol The other ascended deliberately kept knowledge from him tho. Location of Atlantis, and probs other stuff. As a ZPM would have powered his super weapon when the eyes where destroyed I’ll say this tho the ori would never ever tolerate him, they would destroy him if they could,
I don't think they would have destroyed him, they would probably use his knowledge and let him join there side as he had very good detailed information on the Ascended Alteran which could prove to be very valuable to them. You got to remember that when it comes to the Ori they often use the approach of an enemy of my enemy and they offer their power to those who have the same cause if not almost identically aligned with their own.
Well if he had a chance to work with them, Anubis would maybe do it. But given who and what he really is he would also do his own little schemes in the background to backstabb them. It all comes down to A: Would the Ori work with him? Not sure given their own megalomaniacal approach and the fact that they don't want to share power with anyone. B: Even if the answer is yes. Knowing Anubis he would maybe consider the others a better alternative to the Ori. At least the ancients would leave him the hell alone on the mortal plane. The Ori would dispose of him as soon as he has no value to them.
@@vadfarkas14 and as soon sam anuibis learned about thr out of phase tech and that ascended can’t see into phased dimensions he would most likely pursue the ascended weapon to destroy the others and then reascend himself I’ve often wondered if SGC could have made something to inprison him. ZPMS are universes in a bottle, I wonder if they could have made somthing that trapped him in a bottled universe
@@vadfarkas14 That's not 100% true, in the movie The Ark of Truth, Adria admits that the power of the Ori was spread far and wide between many individuals obtaining the mantle of the Ori. She found this information out because of Merlin's device destroying them all, only to have her take up all of that power. Earlier on in the story it was said that the Ori do not share their power, which was probably true in the beginning before the Alteran left their home Galaxy for the Milky Way. But over the many millennia, it's possible that changed and probably due to having the need to have more than one ascended watching over the Galaxy. When Andrea took the mantal power of the Ori, she was alone in her power, which made it easy for Morgan Le Fay to distract her so the sp1 could do some snooping and figure out the password that showed up briefly on the ark before Adria came back. So it was very important to share the power with many as many could could use that power more effectively than one alone ascended being. So the others in the Milky Way galaxy have the right idea, however the others basically weakened themselves when they prevented Oma from recruiting more into the fold, which I believe was her goal, to try and make themselves stronger as she knew that the Ori would once again become a threat. She knew she couldn't gain power like how the Ori do, so the next best thing was to recrut more help into the fold. However, because the others didn't like her ascending ppl, I believe they sent Anubis her way and possibly helped him trick her into ascending him, while they stopped the full transformation of his ascension, and kept him in this half ascended state so she would be forever punished to babysitting him when it came to him using ascended abilities. Of course that all changed when sg1 started doing research into Merlin and his forbidden research into destroying ascended beings. Maybe Oma learned about this and allowed Anubis to escape to distract the others from stopping sg1 in building the device, we all just assumed that maybe the others were okay with sg1 building the sangral, but it's possible they were distracted by something else while sg1 put it together. If you remember at the time, Adria was trying her best to find SG-1 so that she could stop them from building this thing, it's also possible that one of the ascended Ori was the distraction that kept the others from interrupting. The show doesn't explain any of that information, however it does make you think what could have possibly happened and why they never did intervene.
The main reason the others did not intervene directly when SG-1 was searching and subsequently building the device was most likely their firm belief in free will and freedom of choice. And the Ori openly breaking rules even in the milkyway. I think they let mortals do what they want after they realized the alternative is an open war between them and the Ori. Besides we know that they already allowed the creation of a sangraal once. Ganos Lal only intervened when said device was completed. She destroyed the device hence completing her task given to her by the others. But also after realizing the danger the Ori posed she left Moros alone and placed him in a stasis chamber. As a backup plan in case the Ori make their move, while hoping they would never have to do it. I'd wager the others were fine with this result hence they didn't kill Moros or remove his memories simply because while in stasis he does not pose anykind of threat to anyone. Or they simply didn't know. As we know being ascended does not make you omnipotent and all knowing.
Watching this reminded me of how much I disliked the pronunciation of Ba'al's name in Stargate. I know its technically an ok way, but its the far less popular and less historic way.

That's always kind of funny, because in the show we hear several different pronunciations of Goa,uld. To O'Neill it was just sound like goold , and then two others it was pronounced goahoold or gold. The way O'Neill said it may have been Americanized, but it was at least easier to say without tripping yourself up on it just like ba'al. As in ball.

*Yes I’ve watched several of these **#Darren** and they are great, thanks*
They should have just descended him and erased all of his memories and let him live out the rest of his life as the
snake he is.

Anubis was seriously a major shake up in what we know about the system lords. Even outside of just him being partially ascended, his tactics were dangerously effective.
More like dangerously cunning.
Ya he didn't fuck around with too much pomp and circumstance. Well not a LOT for Goa'uld. 😅
But I do miss O'Neill's phone conversations with him and the other system Lords over hologram through the Stargate those were the best.
That and working on your tee time at the gate.
Not to mention a nice tie-in into the Ancients Gate builder mythos
I really wish they'd gone into detail about what crimes Anubis had committed. "Really, really bad" even by the System Lords' standards intrigue me.
Yea you know its back when folks who's bread and butter is slavery, and genocide look at ya talkin bout thats fucked up
It reminds me of Columbus and how his atrocities were so bad the Spanish fleet told him not to come back lol

It seems like a lazy evasion to me for the writers to just say they were "unspeakable." Maybe a new Stargate will give us details.
Goa’uld weapon. You need Naquadah in your system to use the wrist blaster. Not true for the armour though
I mean it's pretty safe to assume they tried.
@vadfarkas14 nope he's just busy. One day, he and Adria will team up against Morgan and Oma.
Well Oma basicly just fixed the mess she created. Without here it wouldnt have been nearly as difficult to defeat Anubis
Anubis was the best villain of SG-1 by far...
I have we visited his story knowing what the future is in the show, I often wonder of an alternate reality where Anubis joins forces with the Ori and shares the deepest secrets of the others and how to defeat them.

Yes he was my favorite!
While I don't think it was what they intended, I always loved that Ra named his followers after other G'ould, like he named his pets after all the subordinates he didn't like in order to mock them.
I never thought about it that way. I like it! Still, it was too bad we never saw Anubis' First Prime wear folding jackal armor.
Plus, it serves the dual purpose of rewarding his most valued servants by giving them the name of a god.
One of the favourite villain in general
I perfer Ba'al

Ascended Ancients were jerks and too bad Merlin's weapon didn't take out both sets of ascended being.
What good is eternal life if you do nothing with it
With the others they had majority rule.
So when the plot became about eternal Kombat was Anubis, that should raise some questions to how he became so powerful.

presuming that the Ancients were alone on the ascended plain or were others there already there and the laws of the others now also their law
Ba'al and Anubis were the best system lords
At 2:20 you say "The Ancients used their collective power to try and force Anubis descend, (...) but because he was now equal to them in power, their efforts were only partially effective."
This is not what happened. The Ancients chose to do it this way to punish Oma Desala.
How were the Ori pushed back then?

@@aasekristoffer I would say if they could have but chose not to, if makes them extra pieces of shif

Yeah, I wanted to know further information in that story which made me excited about Stargate Alliance the video game oh, unfortunately the game never came out and we never got to see the extended version of that story, because that game was surrounded by Anubis and his rise to power. But we never got to see that alternate ending.
What scared me the most about Anubis was how he managed to trick a ascended beeing like he did
Anubis is still out there so if there ever is a new series of Stargate he could always return.
Even worse is that he could meet Adria and they form a partnership, they would be unstoppable.

I love the fact it’s only Omar herself stopping Anubis he’s not been killed off he’s only trapped
Anubis was my favorite SG-1 Villain
Anubis and Sokar are my two favorite SG1 villains.
Correct and correct
Oma helped Anubis to ascend because he tricked her into thinking he was a good person. The other ancients forced him back down the ascension ladder to something between mortal and ascended. They could have fully devolved him but chose not to, to punish Oma for her hubris in breaking the first law of the ascended ancients: no lone ascended being shall help a lower to ascend. In spite of this punishment Oma continued to help mortals to ascend, like Daniel Jackson. It wasn't until Anubis was literally about to wipe out all life in the galaxy that she chose to act.
@@asvarien to punish another ascended being, they let a half descended ravage the mortal universe. Ok. Makes no sense.

So basically, anyone can ascend, provided know how, independent their nature, or any moral or ethical leanings.

it would be interesting to know where the scenes in the temple of Khep were filmed. It is a wonderful place telling by the look at the episode
Anubis will return one day.

I have a question whether there will be a translation into Polish

In hindsight,… And after seeing how the rest of the franchise episodes played out,… Anubis was an idiot. He had access to so many things. And did so little.
thanks
I wonder how long he was in the background, maybe since Ra death or before that
Anubis, the Darth Sidious of the Goa’uld.
Anubis is like The Master from Doctor Who: existed in a non-corporeal state, snatching bodies, and inexplicably escapes certain death.
Ra didn't use Jaffa. They even said that in season 1 of SG-1
Where was that? I don't recall that line.

Oma can't keep fighting anubis he will eventually return as he should literally one of the best villains of all time.
I miss the Oldbis.
I think that isn't the case, since Oma also states that the Others warned Anubis "he wasn't allowed to use any knowledge or power unless he otherwise would have gained it as a Goa'uld." But I admit the dialogue here about the Others' actions is a bit ambiguous,
@@GateWorldDotNet they fully changed Daniel back, twice. Not sure why anyone would think they could not do the same to Anubis

Anubis is my favorite villain in the franchise, so much so that I've adopted him as my persona on various platforms.
I've always wondered if the "unspeakable crimes" of Anubis were trying to create a Harsesis child. That seems to be something they frown upon
She told Daniel that when he came to Kheb "he knew what he was doing."
why are comments off on the newest vid?

@@GateWorldDotNet ah that's fair, I love the channel so keep up the good work, your true fans will stick by you
im sure you got this wrong. the ancients only half descended him as punishment to oma
@@GateWorldDotNetthat and his worshippers gave him power like the ori did
"took his name from"? weren't the Goa'uld the actual entities?
Or is this just a form of expression? Either way, it's confusing
The show can be vague at times over where the Goa'uld took up existing mythological figures and impersonated them, versus how much of that mythology grew up around them and their actions. It seems to be a both/and situation.
@@GateWorldDotNet Yeah, it really is vague now that I think about it. Thanks for replying!
I can only imagine what he did that's so bad that even his own kind were against him
wait... what?... its not the ancients couldn't sent anubis back, they had the power to send back ascended beings and make them mortal (Daniel Jackson for example), but they wanted to punish Oma, so they only send him half way, and strip them of the knowledge he gained from being ascended, and let him keep any knowledge that he as a mortal, and as a goauld could have obtained, wich gave him a hube advantage, that was the punishment to Oma for helping him and other ascend.
Are you sure that the Egyptian god of the underworld didn't his name from the system lord Anubis? That makes more sense.
Anubis the most powerful..Ba,al the most Clever
So I thought they said that they COULDN'T descend Anubis but I can't find that. I did, however, realize that I am still kind of right. Remember, he's only half ascended. There's no reason for a fully ascended being to not be able to force a lower back into flesh and blood. The fact that Oma and Anubis are locked forever in a battle is proof of how powerful he is. He already had knowledge prior to being ascended and that's how he's able to hold his own against Oma the first time and then the collection of the Ancients AND at the end holding off Oma from beating him.
nice
He took his name from the Egyptian god of the underworld.
Um the lore of sg1 clearly says that the go'uld were the gods the Egyptians worshipped
@@GateWorldDotNet Anubis was ascended for a long time, too, a thousand years our time. I wonder how long he had to learn how to resist descension.
Poor Oma. She seemed like such a sweet woman. Taken advantage by this a hole.
This is why the Ancients should be listed as the dumbest of the advanced species.
😊⚜️🌌💯RA ⚜️💯
Why would Oma help a goa'uld? Was this perhaps why Anubis created Khalek? That would mean that Anubis is not even the original Gua'uld.
Anubis evidently created Khalek as part of his research into ascension -- perhaps even before he went to Kheb. IIRC he might have even considered Khalek as a new host, a la Nirrti's experiments in creating a hok'taur.

It makes you wonder if there are any ascended Anubis clones floating around out there doesn't it?
He didn't take his name from the Egyptian god. He kind of was the Egyptian god.
Hate to be that guy but some of this information is just wrong and easily found if you just watched the show.
Well I've been watching, analyzing, reporting, and discussing the show with its cast and crew for 20 years. Can you be a little more specific?
So then why can they return Daniel all the way back? Seems like a plot hole.
One example is this line from Daniel in "Children of the Gods": "[Ra] borrowed the religion and culture of the ancient Egyptians he brought through the gate and then he used it to enslave them."
That's not necessarily definitive either. But it suggests that not every Earth deity originated from a Goa'uld.

I believe we can chalk what Daniel said at the beginning, as he didn't fully understand the full picture and what was going on at the time when the Gould were here.
Or where they mixed lol
The other ascended deliberately kept knowledge from him tho. Location of Atlantis, and probs other stuff. As a ZPM would have powered his super weapon when the eyes where destroyed
I’ll say this tho the ori would never ever tolerate him, they would destroy him if they could,
I don't think they would have destroyed him, they would probably use his knowledge and let him join there side as he had very good detailed information on the Ascended Alteran which could prove to be very valuable to them.
@@vadfarkas14 and as soon sam anuibis learned about thr out of phase tech and that ascended can’t see into phased dimensions he would most likely pursue the ascended weapon to destroy the others and then reascend himself

That's not 100% true, in the movie The Ark of Truth, Adria admits that the power of the Ori was spread far and wide between many individuals obtaining the mantle of the Ori.
There is nothing wrong with how they pronounced it. Ba'al... as in Bocce!
@@Snapper314 It is traditionally, and historically pronounced BAY-uhl, and that goes back thousands of years.
