Making Cutting Board Butter

  • In this video I try my hand at making some butter to treat the cutting boards I have been making. Husband made a batch last year and I have used it all up, so I am making some more!
    I found a recipe that said to use 4 cups of Mineral Oil and 1 cup of Carnuba Wax. I made this easily by putting the ingredients in a crock pot until it was all melted. Then I poured it into a container and once it was all set up I tried it out by putting it on a cutting board that had nothing on it. It was on the hard side, but still useable. When I make it again I will cut the wax down to ½ cup.
    Deuteronomy 6:24-25 And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as we are this day. 25 And it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us.

    A lot of people don't do it but if you want a deeper penetration of the wax, put on a coating of wax and use a heat gun on low setting and melt the wax into the board then come back with another coat of wax. Depending on the thickness of the board you need to watch the amount of heat applied so you don't warp the board. This will give you some of the best protection you can get on a cutting board.

    I use a mineral oil/beeswax mixture. Got the beeswax from a friend who has bees! Don't remember the ratio but it was approximately 4:1. It is a little firmer that the batch I was given. I have also used a hairdryer to have it "melt" into the nooks and crannies.

    You can use mineral oil cause it won't hurt you if you get it in your digestive system.. I use motor oil on the fence to preserve the wood. I don't eat fence boards though. Love your boards

      And you fence looks awesome so motor oil must work pretty good! 🤎UBro

    Hey Cy! I've always enjoyed your channel and your videos. That's kind of crazy somebody would say that about mineral oil. That's all I've ever used, it's food safe, and good for the wood. You don't really want to use any oils with nuts and as many people have nut allergies. Mineral oil is what I use for all my cutting boards and carved spoons. I too like to put board butter on after the memorial oil. I'll have to try to make my own some time. I've been scrolling for many years but really need to try to do more intarsia as I enjoy it it's a great way to use up all the small pieces of wood I have. I just made a snowman the other day. I need to get better at making the pieces tighter. I do have a lot of intarsia patterns to try. Anywho great video! I pray you and your husband and family are doing well. Have a blessed day! Hello Marty, thanks for the note! Sounds like you are a well rounded woodworker! I have a stack of intarsia patters I'd like to tackle too, gaps still happen but we just keep trying! Thanks for the prayers!.🤎 Hopenit is warming up for you over there in Minne*snow*ta! 😂

    I've always used a food safe mineral oil and beeswax combination. You just need to make sure it says the mineral oil is food safe. Food grade mineral oils are highly refined and safe for use in the food industry. If you have any Mason jars sitting around they might be a good option to pour your wax/mineral oil into. Then you could put the lid on so it would stay clean and not dry out.

      Hi Lori!!!!
      I do have some larger mason jars, I will be adding more oil to the mix and will use those, thanks for the idea!

    Mineral Oil is perfectly safe to use on cutting boards, whoever said that doesn't know what they're talking about. It is considered a non-drying oil meaning it will never dry (unlike polymerized Walnut Oil for example). Mineral Oil is the least durable of all finishes and when you wash the board you wash the oil off (which is why you have to constantly reapply it). Wax is a top coat and is not durable either, again when you wash the board you wash the wax off. Carnauba wax is harder than Beeswax so your 4:1 ratio would result in a softer mixture like you wanted if you had used Beeswax instead. So reduce the amount of Carnauba, play with using both waxes in the same batch, etc. With all that being said, mixing Mineral Oil and Wax together is used by a lot of people on all kinds of food use items. It's safe, easy to apply and reapply, and anybody can do it. Are there better and more durable finishes to use instead? Absolutely, but also more skill is needed. Most customers don't have that skill so Mineral Oil and Beeswax gives them something to use. If you don't want to make your own you can buy Howards Butcher Block Conditioner in the paint department at Home Depot which is mixture of Mineral Oil, Beeswax, and Carnauba Wax.

    Try the microwave, it is faster and easier and you can make it in its storage jar (canning jar).

      Hub bought a small crock pot just for the shop but I will keep the microwave in mind. And another recommended a mason jar! I will be adding more oil to my mix and will use a mason jar! 👍👍👍

    I have mixed mineral oil and beeswax. I got some carnauba wax today to try that out. I did my measurement by weight but I don't remember the ratio.

      🤔 I will add more oil to this recent batch to soften it up. Did you like how yours came out?

    • @bobt2522
      @bobt2522 3 місяці тому +1

      @@CysCorner yes, I like it, but it was a little too soft. It was a little thicker than petroleum jelly.
      To test the thickness of your mixture, you can scoop a few tablespoons of the hot mixture onto a board. It will cool quickly and you can judge the viscosity while the main batch is still warm.
      David Picciuto (and others) have used carnauba wax in their mixtures. I thought I would try that.

    • @CysCorner
      @CysCorner  3 місяці тому +1

      @@bobt2522Thicker than petroleum jelly but softer than a soft bar of soap, that is my goal! And thank you about scooping some out during the process to check it, what a great idea!

      @bobt2522 3 місяці тому +1

      @@CysCorner I hadn't thought about wiping the melted mixture onto a cutting board until just now. I wonder if it will soak into the wood better than the cold mixture.

    • @CysCorner
      @CysCorner  3 місяці тому +1

      @@bobt2522 well, I did that! It was still warm so I coated my board. Once it was cooled I wiped it off. It was super easy to apply but I haven't notice any difference in the end result. 🤷‍♀️
