  • 1978 Jaguar XJ6 | FIRST DRIVE | Part 6
Welcome to our 1978 2 Jaguar XJ6 Series 2 barn find. The Jag was stored in a garage not far from us, only a couple of miles away, since 1999, 24 years ago, when it was taken off the road for maintenance by it’s previous owner.
Well, this is an exciting one, we take the barn find Jaguar XJ6 for its first drive after being stored off the road in a barn for 24 years. But to begin with In this episode, we remove the camshaft covers to inspect the engine and check the timing chain tension and retention the chain with the special tool.
The challenge we have set ourselves in this Jaguar barn find series, is to revive the Jag and to get the car back on the road again.
So let’s crack on, We hope you enjoy the episode

They said that Jaguars were hard to work on way back in the 70's. But when you look under the bonet of a simple 4 cylinder engine car today the XJ6 is a piece of cake.

Hi Mark - eventually found the Patron’s link. Perhaps make it a tad easier to find? but then I’m an old git… I’m interested in seeing how the QuickJacks go - I am thinking of buying some for my garage to straddle my shallowish pit. Hopefully you’ll show a bit of these being set up / in use. Great video and to see the old Girl running so well! Thank you!

Well done lads yet another classic saved from the scrap yard.
It's a pity that not more of these types of cars are not put back on the roads ..
The timing chains have always been a problem with jaguars in the past..
However anyone who has a little knowledge of how a engine works can rectify a rattling chain on a old jag
All I can say is I take my hat off to the pair of you .. with this project of yours...
Anyway lads stay safe and well. I'm looking forward to the next project of yours..

Great job. Don’t over tension that chain though. But you seem to have it sorted. Seems to run great. By the way all xk engines had hardened valve seats from day one so you don’t need lead additives for that reason. Great video though.

The reason it isn't changing up into 3rd gear could down to the vacuum tube not being fitted. There should be a vacuum tube fitted that goes to the inlet manifold from the gearbox. I had the same problem when I did an engine swap on a 1973/4 SWB 4.2L XJ6.
Seeing this car and being driven reminds me of a BRG 1978 XJ6 I had in the mi 1990's. Great progress lads!

The worst enemy of the XK engine was corrosion of the cyl head waterways . They corroded if coolant wasnt kept fresh. New coolants should prevent that if their are ok

Well done on this one Folks, superb cars, recall driving one of the first ones just in the car park of the company where I once worked, it belonged to an owner of the company and it was one of the first XJ6s produced and he had to pay a premium over the list price to get.
Fabulous to feel it fitting around you and the smoothness (most cars then manual) of this was amazing.

As mentioned earlier, the rattling is likely below the center console (as your dad said) because the rubber is crumbling that holds the transmission support spring in place! It will definitely cause the rattling noise!

might be the gearbox mount ,
    from memory its a

    possibly could be
    the problem.?

not sure exactly who you are directing your comment at@@andymccabe6712 but you should remember it's always best to be polite on someone else's 'page'. Overuse of exclamation marks and question marks always makes me think of an angry confused person who is in line to make a fool of themselves. However, to hopefully answer your rant I found this on a Jaguar forum 'As already said, CLOCKWISE only, as you are looking at the front of the engine. Turning one of these backwards can damage the very expensive plastic chain tensioner, been there.' This was for the V12 admittedly but it makes sense to turn the engine in the way it would normally rotate

The clips showing different plates on the front and back were taken at different times. Given that DSG 2S is obviously a private reg (it now belongs to a red Vauxhall), YEL 877S is either the original reg or an age-related one. Either they sold the reg or it wasn't included in the sale, but it seems most likely that both plates were changed with the replacement reg before taking it out on the road.
