Chain weapons like this are specifically to out range a swordsman once their cover is blown and they are in open combat, unable to escape. Swinging it over their head like a helicopter is a way to keep multiple swordsmen at bay when they are surrounded, similar to using a two handed greatsword as a matter of fact. Entanglement is also a bonus.
